Is GIT Free? GitHub VS Bitbucket VS GitLab Price Comparison
hello everyone i am yuru saranji berry,in this video we are going to see that,is get free or paid other than that we,are going to have a price comparison for,the multiple service providers such as,github bitbucket or gitlab so lets get, started,[Music],as you guys all know it is a service and, every service has some free or paid, features or it is free to only some of,the few extents same in the case of git,or you can secure service providers they, are all providing it to frequent free to,some extent, and, providing its premium features,to the,you can say for some charges or have, some pricing plans in the whole video we,are going to discuss the whole pricing, plans for the multiple service providers, including github bitbucket and gitlab, that are the most popular ones so,lets start with the github,as you can see i am on the github, pricing page so you can see we have, multiple pricing plans for the gate,we have multiple pricing plans for the, team and for the enterprises and for the, free user so you can see we have, multiple features provided for the free, user and to the team on enterprise users,so lets have a look at them you can see,for the uh free user or zero dollar, apartment user,uh their unlimited public or private, repositories so let me tell you here one, thing guys all the features that are, provided in the github premium plan or,any other providers plan is is for the, private repository all the public, repositories are free and easy to use as,i told you in the previous lectures all,the packages that we are using nowadays, are our public repositories so all the, repositories that all the repositories, and all the features that we are going,to discuss now,is all for the private repositories,so for the free features we have, unlimited public or private repositories, and you can see we have multiple, features in automatically security and, version updates 200 ci or cd minutes,500 mb of storage, and new issues of projects and so on and,so forth,if you go to the other plan you can see,we have some more features code orders, required reviews and some others and if,you go with the you can say enterprise, features there are so many more features, these are for the monthly basis if you,go to the yearly basis then you will see,you will find some more and more, discounts and stuff so this is all for,the github pricing plan guys now if we,are going to move towards the bitbucket, before moving towards the bit bucket, most of my repositories that we have, used and nowadays uh most of the plans, that we that people are purchasing are, from the big bucket because bitbucket, has some big and, easier pricing plan more other than, github, let me just go through it,now i am on the bitbucket page with the, bitbucket pricing page as you can see i,will share the links in the description,as well now you can see for the free, user we have zero uh,zero dollar per month and you can see, unlimited users you can see in the, github we have unlimited free users but,we have some limited features but now in,the bitbucket we have they limited us to,the five users, and 20 minutes 50 minutes uh and the, stories they are providing is for the,1gb if you go to the github for the free, user they are only providing the free, user of 500 mb,[Music],but in that bit bucket they are, providing 1gb so 1gb is way more than, the 500 almost double so now unlimited, private repositories and you can see, there are so many features jiras, authentication jira is a very good tool, that come up with the bit bucket, jira is one of the major reason that, people are going with the bitbucket, because, you can say one of the most popular, project management tools trailer, integration trailer is also an,attraction too so it is also a really, good feature so you can see there are, some other features but these are some, measurements because the deployment, environments and,all others,if you go to the standard plan they are, providing you 5 gb but if you go with, here they are providing us,they are providing as you can see how, many space 2 gb so 5 gb is again much, more reasonable and then 10 gb for the, enterprise or premium one so bitbucket,is way more reasonable most of my own, repositories are hosted in the, bitbucket so bitbucket is really amazing,i also recommend bitbucket to many of my,clients and theyre hosted so many, things,[Music],now lets go with the get lab gitlab is,the one that im using from because the, past five years gitlab is really amazing, and, provided some of the major features uh,other than, github or bitbucket so lets go with it,you can see fiddler with the free user,it is providing the best space you can,see 5 gb of storage,uh that is way more than the bit bucket,or the,uh or the github bitbucket is providing,us you can say 1gb,uh where is the 1gb,you can see its 1gb and github is only, providing us not 500 mbps but kit lab is,private providing as a 5gb of storage is,the only the free uh user so it is very, reasonable and easy and because there is,a free one,now if we go towards the you can say 19,or the premium one there are some other, features as well or,for unlimited uh ultimate you can go,with the 99 dollar there are some other, features you can say you can go more, with that and you can see more,so thats all for the video guys in this, video we have discussed the pricing, plans for the github bitbucket and, gitlab in the next video im going to,tell you that how can you earn money, using github so stay tuned with me see,you next time,[Music],you
GitHub – Why Microsoft Paid $7.5B for the Future of Software! – A Case Study for Entrepreneurs
this week on case studies with the biz, dockets github 7.5 billion dollar check, was just written from Microsoft to buy,the company are they gonna rot on the, vine or as Microsoft gonna take them, even higher were gonna find out this, week leave comments tell me what you, think, github it all started the history when, two guys founded the company theres, actually a third founder and hes kind,of quiet but it was Tom Preston Warner, and chris wanstrath they come together,to form github well what does it get and, what is a hub of them well what github,is its a consolidation point and its a,tracking point for software development,a git is actually a version control, mechanism or a team coordination, mechanism that was developed by Linus,Torvalds by the way thats the same,Linus that brought us Linux so you know, hes a really really smart guy so you, have this tracking mechanism needs you, need to control versions you need to get, software developers tools so they can, work together well github says what if,we made something in the cloud where, they could store their code keep track,of versions keep track of each other, talk to each other sign off when they, finished maybe an open source element, for it in other words hey I just adapted, your code for this and Im signing off,as its complete so they had all of this, coming together in other words its a,sandbox where developers around the, world can come together and work and, make magic that you and I love and, company is like Oh Facebook IBM a whole, mess of others use it to bring the magic,to software and apps and products that,we depend on every day so lets go up,the history curve and see how they grew, starting with the bright idea and moving,up in 2009 they had about 46,000,developer accounts that were in place, which was pretty amazing because they, just got started no wait and they, basically bootstrapped it with their own, money a year later they had gotten up to,about a hundred thousand but halfway, through 2010 a year after that they were, already at a million something was going,on and the world was watching and paying, attention specifically a year later when, they hit 2 million total user accounts, and they passed SourceForge and Google,to other repositories that allow, developers to work together store code, and do things like that and when its, time to grow what do you need you need, capital you need venture cash and who, they get with none other than in dreesen,Horowitz, thats right Marc Andreessen the, developer and inventor of the original, netscape browser who know a thing or two, about what developers would appreciate, and need and what they did is they put,in a hundred million dollars for about, thirteen percent of the young github, company and I say young because its, only a few years old but its passing, some industry giants an interesting, tidbit there is at that time that was,the largest check ever written to date,by andreessen horowitz a hundred million, dollars from there the growth continued, lets check it out 2013 suddenly theyve, blown right past three million and, theyre at five million unique user, accounts its really off like a rocket, and its taken on a global presence, there are developers around the world, that are storing code in there and, sometimes theyre storing versions to a,lot of things that werent appealing to,certain governments as we go into 2014,things are speeding past five million, toward ten million accounts and, something interesting happen first India, decides to block them because they had, some documentation on there that was, related to Isis and the Indian, government did not like that and did not, want it to be circulated to developers,or other people who might be using, github for their own purposes also in,Russia they were very upset because, there was like a suicide manual that had, been put online and Russia wanted to,block access to it in 2015 halfway, through the year China gets upset and,China wants to block a github for a very, simple reason they were presenting how,to avoid internet censorship now if you, know anything about the Chinese, government you know there was a major,WTF going on in Beijing when they heard, that that sort of information is out, there theyre trying to shut down cable, channels and objectionable programming, and web sites and you know I got to say,China and the age of the internet youre, gonna be playing whack-a-mole till the, return of Christ because get used to it,one goes down and others coming up,nonetheless it shows you the power and, influence that github was having as an,enabler of teams of people to come, together and collaborate and keep track,of versions and all of the features that, were part of github in July of 15 the, success led to a need for more capital, and they went out and they raised 250,million dollars thats right a quarter,of a billion dollars and they raised it,from none other than Sequoia now theres,an interesting thing here that Id like,to point out if you take a look what I,got here 13% was what andreessen, horowitz had had andreessen horowitz not,had whats called a top-up right in,other words the right to invest more at,a later date to keep my 13% at 13% they, would have actually gone down to eleven, point four percent but they kept their, top upright which meant that these, numbers came together Sequoia with 12,and a half and andreessen horowitz with,13 now why is that important because by,this time it is a rare thing that an,entrepreneur would still have 75% of the, company for the founders and the, engineers and the people that have been, given stock options in that company, normally by this time its completely, flipped theres about 25 percent left, for management and theres 75 percent in,the hands of the investors that go,through the sequential Series A Series B,Series C which is using letters and, merely to number the investment tranches, that happen over time the company so,github is doing pretty good out in the, marketplace and they also did pretty, good because they bootstrap the company, basically and when they got to these, points when they took capital they were, highly valuable so they only gave up,relatively small percent compared to,what other companies would be giving up,that is an important lesson you can, raise capital to late and miss, opportunities to invest in things and,you can also raise capital to early and, give away more of your company early on,when maybe you should have reached down, deep and bootstrapped or you know used, any of the many crowdsourcing options, that might be available to you dont be,too anxious to raise that capital but, dont pass up opportunities to raise, capital to grow there,is the tension that every entrepreneur, will face so after youve raised that, money how are they doing well a report, came out in nine months of 2016,it got disclosed that they had actually, had approximately ninety nine million, dollars in revenue for the first nine, months of 16 but they had lost sixty, eight million dollars showing that, building a global github to serve these, all these millions and millions of,accounts was not cheap however this is,showing the kind of scale when youve, got the dollars to actually weather, those losses as you scale it puts you in,a good place because lets take a look, what was happening to the number of user, accounts number of user accounts was, heading to the moon had passed 10,million in 1415 and by the time they, reach early 17 after this loss which was,the first nine months of 16 they were at,20 million plus user accounts well now, that they raised this money so to propel, them on future growth curve and, certainly they were using it as they, went past 10 million subscribers and, were heading toward the moon after nine, months of 2016 it was indicated that, they had actually had revenue of 99,million dollars however they had a loss,of 68 million dollars which means the, cost in the middle a hundred and sixty, seven million dollars of cost against, ninety nine million dollars of revenue, resulting in this loss so this is whats, interesting about growing and scaling, comp

Is GitHub Copilot Worth The Price? (It Depends)
hello everyone today I thought I would, talk a little bit about GitHub copilot,so for those of you that arent aware, copilot is a Microsoft GitHub tool that,is effectively like an auto complete run,by a machine learning algorithm of sorts, and it sort of runs as like a visual, studio code extension Ill show you what, that looks like in a minute here the, reason why Im making this video is,because a couple people have messaged me,and asked if the new 10 a month price, tag is worth it,considering the fact that like I think,80 percent of my viewers arent from the,United States you can imagine that some, people come from countries where 10 USD,a month is a considerable amount so I,just want to make this video to,hopefully highlight the pros and cons, where I think you should use it and, where I think you should stay away from,it under all circumstances and Ill try,and keep it all pretty fast because I,also dont have a lot of time today,in full disclosure its not for your, benefit I could sit here and talk for, hours its just I dont have a lot of,time so,um basically the well start with the,con the biggest Con in my opinion when,GitHub copilot first released there was,a very big issue with how they did, licensing so if we come over here, you can see GitHub copilot Sparks debate, around open source licenses so there was,two parts to this issue in my opinion, the first was that from my understanding,the,co-pilot team, effectively said that they dont, consider uh right here even they dont, consider licenses when they do their, training it says uh all public GitHub,code was used in training we dont, distinguish the license type and thats,a bit of an issue in terms of wait like, where the code comes from that it was, trained on maybe not legally speaking, but definitely ethically speaking, because youre talking about a whole, host of of code that was written under, certain licenses where the licenses, might have said like hey this is cool, for you to use for educational purposes, but please dont use it professionally,or its cool for you to use this but Id,appreciate some like credit if you do,use it and of course youre not going to,get that credit it from this this, machine learning algorithm that now, considers it knowledge that it just, inherently knows, and, this sort of leads into the second issue, which is that because all of this code, eventually just gets regurgitated into, your code base wherever youre youre, using it you can end up with some code, thats maybe under a license that, requires you to like attribute the, original Creator and itll then not have, that license attached so a very popular, example of this is like the Quake, inverse Square GitHub copilot issue I,wish I had this open to begin with uh,you can even see here its still a,purple link, effectively uh copilot Auto completed, the fast inverse Square implementation, from Quake 3 which is gpl2 plus code I,dont really know what that entails but, then it takes that license and it says, yeah I dont really like that license, and then it auto completes a separate, license and misattributes or mislicenses, the code so here you can see it takes, the bsd2 license and puts it at the, start so even if you can get it to spit, out a license for whatever like function,or method it gave you that license might, not entirely be what the original, license was because it doesnt have that, type of understanding now they I believe, have worked on this and its not as big,of an issue my problem still stems from, the idea that they didnt consider, licenses in their training set to begin, with thats sort of where I I feel like, theres probably some some legal slash, ethical issues there so for me,personally I wouldnt recommend using a,copilot in like a professional capacity,I think where the strength is and where, you can probably freely use it is going,to be if youre like in your personal, time just trying to learn so as an,educational tool I definitely feel like, theres some Merit there I just also, feel like in terms of professional work,as a business I wouldnt trust this as,far as I could throw it and its not a,tangible thing so I cant throw it so,Im not going to trust it but in terms,of like uh if Im not trying to like, make a buck off of it Im just trying to,learn then I definitely think theres, some ways you can use it so one example, that I love to use I did the GitHub,copilot unemployment speed runs,is like leak code problems so if we come, over to leak code I just tested this out,but Ill test it with a completely, different one well do like the uh I,dont know this largest perimeter try, actually lets lets just do like a,longest substring without repeating, well do a medium problem so it doesnt, seem as obvious so if we come in here, lets say youve been working on this, problem all day you just cant for the, life of you figure it out and lets, pretend that theres like no answers to,the problem all you really have is a,problem statement like this what you can,do is you can grab this and well come, over to my test where I just tested out,the easy problem and well just test out, this random medium problem so the way,you can do it is you just create a block,of comments and then you just paste in,whatever the problem statement is once, thats done you can come down to the, bottom just grab the method signature, paste that in as well and then youre, just going to wait for copilot to do,whatever copilot needs to do now, sometimes you do have to like backspace, and hit Tab and down here youll see, like the little uh loading screen and, then once its done you hit tab you get,the entire method you copy it exit out,of here you paste it into your window, and then let me move this up so we can,all see this uh we can then hit like run, code and just see if it passes the test, were not going to even look at it were, just going to see if it works so we see, that the Run code result worked lets, hit submit itll run against I think, some additional test cases and there we,go so were passing all of our test, cases so now we can do lets say we were, stuck on this we can look at it and we,can figure out like where we were, getting stuck compare it to whatever, step we were stuck on whatever piece of,logic we didnt understand maybe we,didnt understand the index plus one, part and now were looking at it like oh,this makes so much more sense so this is,one area where it can be really helpful,is like youre youre going through, maybe your leak codes or whatever and, youre just stuck on a problem this is,pretty obvious I feel like pretty much, everyone could come up with a solution, like this or at least come up with a use, case like this the other one is lets, say youre learning a completely new, framework lets say youre youre, learning Ruby on Rails and youre trying,to create like a small link aggregate, website of sorts so you can like post a,link with like a name attached to it so,thats what I have here and what I want,to do is I want to get rid of this code,in here, and Im going to pretend that I havent, come up with this code yet all I have, here is a partial or yeah I guess a,partial it just has a link to the Webby,URL and you can see here if I get rid of,it because of this comment GitHub,copilots already suggesting what needs,to go here the other thing I could do is,I could just come in here, and without that context I could do,something like an equal sign and its, already going to start giving me,whatever it is because it probably sees, the URL and its probably aware of what, the previous like save of the file was,so its trying its best to do some, autocomplete here so this is another, area where it can be useful but what I,really like is lets say you can figure, out the link to you can figure out like, the basic structure that you need here, but you get stuck at trying to validate, the URL so if we look at the actual, application, what were trying to do is just have a,bunch of links that all send us to a,proper website so we come in here we,create a new web we say this takes me to,YouTube and then we just put in a URL,thats like I dont know you

Major GitHub Changes — Teams Now Free, Prices Halved!
hello ladies and gentlemen its Mike, here at game from scratch and today we,are talking about github because github, just made a very fundamental change to,the way that pricing works for private, repository and for teams and this is,kind of a cumulation of things that have, happened since Microsoft acquired, getting up now if you happen to not, heard about that a way back in June of,2018 Microsoft acquired github for an,amazing seven and a half billion dollar, and to be honest at the time there was a,lot of people think oh this guy is,falling this is the end Microsoft are, gonna kill it the whole embrace extend, extinguished kind of thing this was the,end lets move over to other, repositories and so on,the truth of the matter is new Microsoft,is much different than 2005 Microsoft, they are really honestly seemingly, embracing open-source and theyre making, money doing it too so theyre gonna, continue doing it and I think that most, people would argue that under Microsoft, stewardship github has become a better, place now github is important for a,variety of reasons it is the number one, repository for code online,I imagine both closed and open source, but one of the big challenges that, happened there is the closed part of you, didnt want to have your code in public, you had to basically pay them now they, did some stuff back in January of 2019,they made a couple changes so github, free includes unlimited private, repositories which was a pretty awesome, change but one of the things about that, change is it has limitations so that was, limited to three collaborators for a,private repository had a bigger team you,had to basically either pay them or work,in public well thats where its a days, announcement comes in this whole thing,is basically gone so now github is,pretty much all features are available, for everyone now theres still some, tears theres ways that github are going,to make money theres also a pricing, change there as well in the good, direction by the way so we have this, blog post it comes from nat freeman it,is really zoomed in let me zoom that out,a little bit by the way net Friedman is,a great guy I met him PAC at a Novell, developer conference and I dont think,Novell exists anymore but hes the guy, that started xamarin and hes done a ton,of open source contributions but now,hes head of I think hes head of open, source at Microsoft at the very least, hes in charge of github so this is the, announcement from him is basically were, happy to announce we are making private, repositories with unlimited, collaborators of a,to all github account so that three, thing is gone now,all of the core github features are now, free for everyone until now if your, organization want to use github for, private developments you had to,subscribe to one of our paid plans what, every developer on earth should have, access to github price shouldnt be,available sort of a barrier price should, not be available, this means teams can now manage their, work together in one place, continuous improvement continues, development project management code, review packages and more we want, everyone to be able to ship great, software on the platform developers love, teams who need advanced features like, code owners which honestly I dont, actually know what that means I think it,may be like a gate keeper for code, commits possibly enterprise features, like saml or personalized support can, upgrade to one of our paid plans and as,I mentioned earlier on there is also a,pricing change here so theyre reducing, the price of paid team plans from nine, dollars per month to four dollars per, user per month effective immediately and, existing customers will have their bill, automatically reduced going forward so,you can now have teams that have private, repository so if you want to work on you, know not open source code you can now,you have no limitations there and well, you do have limitations were actually, couldnt see those in just a second so,first lets just kind of compare them, the plans weve got now so weve got the,Freeth here now keep in mind there are, basically no limitations on open source, projects so the limitations they apply, here almost always apply to closed, private repositories so you still have, unlimited public and then private, repositories unlimited collaborators and, then this stuff again is free for public, and free for public so on private youre, limited to 500 megabytes of github, package storage thats gonna be a bit of,an issue if youre doing games and you, have a lot of data so thats still going,to be a problem for some people again if,its public no issue at all but for, private repositories space is going to,be a problem in a hurry and you get 200,oh sorry 2,000 actions actions minutes, per month action minutes would make a,lot more sense but actions minutes per, month is 2,000 if you jump up to the, team category now at four dollars, instead of nine you get everything from, free our required reviewers are added in,3,000 action minutes instead of 2,000 on,private repositories once again on,public its still unlimited you get two, gigs of storage instead of 500 megabytes, and you have, code owners support and if you jump up,to the $21 per user per month enterprise, level you have advanced auditing a whole, lot more storage 50,000 action minutes, per month, saml single sign-on and then everything, included otherwise and then you have, github 1 which is a contact sales thing, and you probably dont want to contact, sales because that always means its, expensive alright so that is definitely,a nice move now it doesnt make it so,that you can do like huge projects in,private but you can have huge teams now, working on private code so it does make, github that much more useful to the vast, community also gonna probably hurt their, sales quite a bit but especially these, are making half as much off of a smaller, amount of people but then again thats, one of those nice things about having,Microsoft as the owner instead of github,as the owner github was actually running, into financial difficulties in terms of,just floating the money so they were, going to have to monetize this some way,Microsoft doesnt have to they have so,much money they dont care and that is,probably one of the biggest advancement, lets put it this way lets say if,github was bought by it lets lets pick, the names of company so Microsoft bought, them and it seems to have turned out, pretty well what if it was Apple well, then there would be an app store and, would only work on Mac products and they, would deprecated you know all the other, apis within a month or two if it was,Sun or Saurabh Oracle theyd be suing, people for using the repository of all,the big people to buy it and run it I,have to say Microsoft just seem to have, done a solid job now if youre, interested in learning more about little, bit about the fine details and such, there is the FAQ I wont link all the, relevant stuff in the linked article, down below but yeah theres the changes,so github pronouns with two gigabytes, and ten gigabytes of data transfer to,github pro and is reduced down to four, dollars three thousand actions and so on,github free for individual developers, now includes unlimited collaborator so,thats the big big change there so they, removed that three limit and off they go,they got details on how you can upgrade, your plant or downgrade your plant cuz, youre gonna have a lot of people that, were paying for the functionality that,is now free its like I said Microsoft, definitely arent going to be making, money off of this deal I think you have, instructions here on how you can, downgrade your existing subscription so,if you are currently paying for a pro, plan and the free tier now covers you,hey youve got options there and a,couple more details here how long will, this be or ever this is a change that is,permanent thats definitely nice, see how you can learn a little bit more, here now I know one question that some,of you are definitely going to have is,what the heck is in action well action,is basically instructions or tasks that, you run on
How Accurate is GitHubs Pricing Strategy? | Pricing Page Teardown
a lot of their competitors are basically, starting to really really focus on these, types of features and so basically, allowing themselves to get to that, particular point, welcome to pricing page teardown where,Patrick and Peter break down the pricing, pages and strategies of subscription, companies from all corners of the market, this week github founded in 2008 the, computer code service is currently doing,110 million in revenue at a two billion, valuation but how does their pricing, stack up Patrick and Peter take it away,it hub social coding that was the, revolution that they really started the, path of growing github on and what were, looking at here is basically on a dev, front where spelling youre selling to,an actual dev buyer an engineer buyer, which is really really different than, selling to a non-technical buyer in,particular because normally technical, buyers can handle a little bit more, complexity and so you have a little bit,of that complexity github is really, really pretty good with this type of,stuff and what a lot of people dont, remember except for those who have been,on github for a while is they used to,sell on a number of repos or,repositories that your code was actually,in from a private basis thats how they, were actually good for educating their, pricing now its on a per user basis, essentially so on the low end you might, have a personal account here were, basically of unlimited public, repositories unlimited private, repositories a bunch of different, collaborators and this is basically to,get folks to the door this is their, prosumer play as you get higher here all,of a sudden the price and start to,increase and you essentially have a,small team plan where its kind of,confusing here because theres all of a,sudden this $25 per month at five users, which doesnt quite compute with what, youre seeing up here and then all of a,sudden you get into the business plan, which are like serious mid market even, smaller teams but definitely getting, more and more into the enterprise now, whats fascinating is this was a little, bit against the ethos or the social, aspect of github github was all about, basically bringing folks together, basically having unlimited users really, brings folks to the door and now all of,a sudden youre starting to tax those, users on a per month, the reason is is in particular is that,as you get into a larger and larger, organization the number of repos and, repository starts to increase right and,the number of devs start to increase as,well now its easier to understand how, many developers or engineers that you, need to have within github, then it probably is to understand how, many repositories or repos that you have, there in the one,so first up looking at a relative, preference comparing features and, functionality per repository and per, user and what youll notice is that, these high end devs these teams that, have 16 or more developers or engineers, they really really dont want per, repository theyre looking at per user, and so moving especially into that per, user world and also based on features, and functionality that was also another, thing where a lot of the features in,functionality were already included with, github there really wasnt that much, differentiation and that caused certain, things that you know were necessarily, good for those enterprise users ironical, words and if you look at even kind of,breaking down on the per repo basis we,see a different relationship than were, used to seeing normally what we see is,that people basically just want more, more and more right all of a sudden, people dont understand how much they, actually need here you actually see, people understand how much they need, right on the low end folks dont want, that many repos on the high end theyre, essentially trending towards as many as,they can possibly get yeah so these two, aspects github going a little bit more, upmarket at least what we can see from, the outside perspective in addition to,the fact that on a repo basis it doesnt, really make sense for those larger, customers when you looked at any other, technical buyer versus non-technical,buyer you see a technical buyer, understands what they need non-technical,buyer a lot of times theyre like I,dont know like you tell me right and so,theres this combination happening here, that really supports the move that they, made from repos to actual users and even, further when we look at the pricing in,particular the pricing is pretty much,spot-on right so on the blue end here, thats although dev right around that 10,bucks per month there at the high end of,this particular curve as you get into, basically bigger and bigger teams youre, more than willing to pay,or that particular user or that user, subset and then as you get into these, larger teams you want those different, features you want those different, aspects and youre more than willing to,pay for them in particular when we look,at this the this is pretty wide you, dont normally see features all over the,map like this and for those of you dont, remember working in a value matrix of,comparing relative preference of,different features so they like this, feature more than that feature and then, cross referencing that with the actual, willingness to pay on a per user basis, and so what youre looking at here very, very development focused preferences, which is really really cool to see, things like team and user permissions, super super important absolutely people, are willing to pay more for it thats, the classic as your organization gets, bigger those things become more, important a little bit of private repos, give them to me right Im willing to pay,for it which is super interesting public, repos not as important and also, something that people arent willing to,pay for when you look over here all of a,sudden you start to get into these, particular features that normally we see,as better add-ons and better than, premium features normally technical, buyers dont necessarily appreciate 24/7,of support for most products but theres,a good subset that do and want to pay,for it right so its a little bit of a,lost opportunity that they could have, here in addition to that things like, single sign-on auditing multi-factor,authentication these types of things,multi-factor authentication is,definitely kind of you know trending, towards needing to be a core definitely, something thats in the differentiable, side but these types of things its its,its basically something that you know, theres an opportunity there for them in,particular and even like things like IP,whitelisting I thought this was really, really interesting where you know, theres an opportunity there but not a,lot of people care about and they dont, want they dont really want to pay for,it either so long story short if I was, github I started to separate some of,these things out into a little bit more,add-ons they can actually take a lot of,lessons from looking at Dropbox and box,and trying to compare them a little bit,and even the rest of the market right, now and github a lot of their, competitors are basically starting to,really really focus on these types of,features and so basically allowing, themselves to get to that particular, point would be super super helpful for, them if they want to go after that, market, the folks at home what are some of the, main takeaways they can utilize yeah so,I think first off one of the biggest, takeaways in particular is that you have,to understand your value metric for the, market that youre in yep so I would, argue if github was still going after, the Louis and the solopreneurs the indie, developers etc repos were probably still, the better move especially with, unlimited collaborator I think the other, big takeaway is understand the technical, aptitude of your buyer yep this is not, something we talked about enough but a,lot of us in a b2b marketing environment,if we are technical we think oh our, buyer must be just as technical theyre, gonna understand this and even just, doing some basic qualitative testing and, putting it in front of a couple of your,t
There aint no such thing as a “free” tier
it is september 2nd 2022 and youre, watching the code report well it was fun, while it lasted but my github co-pilot,free trial expired today and im way too, cheap to pay 10 a month for something, that will save me thousands of dollars,in hard manual labor and surprisingly, over ninety percent of developers out, there are just as good as me or are they, ive had access to it from the very, beginning and in some ways its, incredibly helpful especially when it,comes to writing common boilerplate code,or when doing unit testing it,understands the context of the code, youve already written or that it wrote, for you and can bang out a bunch of,worthless unit tests to give you 100,code coverage to make your boss happy, thats pretty awesome but there are some, definite trade-offs here for one its, almost too good and i feel like it makes,me more stupider like instead of using,my normal problem solving technique of,copying the top answer from stack, overflow i just trust that copilot knows, what its doing but in a lot of cases, the code is actually not as good as it,looks at first your javascript throws a,segfault then you end up going back to,reverse engineer the copilot code when, really you could have done this all by,yourself but you just got lazy and ended,up wasting time the other problem i have, with copilot is that it sometimes just, makes annoying suggestions yes you can, toggle it on and off but thats also, annoying the biggest issue though is,that every time you use copilot it,collects a little more data and gets a,little bit better at what it does ai,just won its first art contest yesterday,at the colorado state fair and pissed, off a bunch of humans before you know it,ai is going to start winning every, hackathon it might still take another, year or two before it replaces us,completely but right now it feels a lot, like were paying microsoft for the, privilege of digging our own graves i,think the only way to fight back is to,write terrible nonsensical spaghetti, code to ensure the co-pilot doesnt take, over as captain of this flight now if my,co-pilot trial expiring werent bad, enough heroku also just recently, announced that theyre getting rid of,their free tier it used to be one of the, easiest places to get a server postgres, database and redis cache in a single, location all for free but starting on,november 28 2022 all those free services, are going away now if you dont use, heroku you may not think thats a big, deal but this could be the first domino,to fall motivating other platforms to,also get rid of their free tiers as a,cheap ass developer with hundreds of,unfinished side projects i truly hope, thats not the case but in this current, economy tech stocks are in free fall, heroku is owned by salesforce which is,declined 50 from its peak earlier this, year free tiers are only there to drive, growth and if the user base isnt, growing then free tiers serve no other, purpose than to lose money they claim, its to manage fraud and abuse and that, may be true to some extent but in my,opinion this looks a lot more like a,financial decision luckily there are, many other platforms that still have a,free tier you can get a free relational, database from planetscale free hosting, and edge functions from vercell or,cloudflare or all kinds of free stuff, from firebase and id be very surprised,if they ever eliminated their free tier,in fact im so confident that ill make, the john mcafee promise right now to eat,my own pick on national television if,firebase ever gets rid of its free tear,id rather be suicided in a spanish, prison than see that happen but its not,all bad news this week we did get a,brand new javascript framework this, ones called enhance and it has a,weirdly awesome logo but actually, provides a really awesome developer, experience when it comes to working with, web components whats interesting is,that its using patterns very similar to,what im using to build the next version,of the fireship pro website its very, cool to see another project thinking, about native web components in the, context of a multi-page application this, just in we have some breaking news i,encountered a regex problem then exactly,12 seconds later i went out and, purchased github co-pilot,this has been the code report thanks for, watching and i will see you in the next, one
Introducing GitHub Package Registry
hello people of Earth whether youre, joining us here in San Francisco or all, over the world view the power of the,Internet please join me in welcoming to,the stage github CEO Matt Friedman all, right hows everyone doing on a Friday, awesome thank you for joining us welcome,to github were so glad that you could, commit to being here with us today im,matt freedman on the CEO of github were, here in San Francisco at github San,Francisco headquarters but github is,actually a distributed company were a,thousand people were in countries around, the world and so its appropriate that, were also streaming this event live, right now to thousands of people online,so wherever you are if its Friday night,if its Saturday morning thank you for, joining us were so happy you could, spend part of your day with us so I,became CEO of github six months ago when, the Microsoft acquisition completed and, github actually operates as an,independent company and were committed,to serving developers and giving them, what they want and so some of you may, have noticed for the last six months, weve been really focused on listening,to developers talking to maintain errs, talking to small companies and big, companies in hearing what you want us to,do and then doing that so its a simple, formula but its working weve been, shipping a lot in fact weve shipped, over the last six months, improvements to almost every part of,github from draft pull requests to,improvements to gists and issues and, notifications to new mobile views like, the one we shipped yesterday and much, more and so in fact Im happy to report, that at the six-month mark weve shipped, over a hundred updates to get hub in,just the last six months something were, really proud of,everyone at github has worked so hard to,do all this for you and and so were, really proud of the work that weve done, and were really just getting started, now one of our biggest announcements in,the last six months was in January when,we announced that we would make, unlimited private repos free for all a,github users and the response to this, has been awesome weve actually seen the, rate of private repo creation on github, triple since then and with no slowdown,in fact an acceleration in the rate of,public repo creation so github is,growing kind of faster than ever along, every measurable dimension as an example, when we announced that Microsoft was, buying github we had 28 million, registered users and today we have 36,million registered users on github were, really proud of that we also hit thank, you we hit at the end of last year a big, milestone with a hundred million total, repos on github now whats interesting, about this is to look at the rate of,repo creation so it took six years for, github to get to its first three million, repos, now today developers create more than 3,million repos on github every month so,github is really growing fast and its, exciting to be a part of it now I know, youre all here to see our latest work, right we gave a little teaser Wednesday, morning we announced this sort of,mysterious launch event and we invited, you to come here here so I know youre, curious to find out what it is that, were shipping now but before we get, into that a lot of you actually made, some pretty great guesses as to what the, announcement would be today and so I,thought we could highlight a few of,these guesses so heres heres three,Jaxon Harper suggested that we ship two, free hours of dog walking for all github, pro subscribers Jackson is a dog lover, more dog lovers a github Jackson Im,sorry to report were not shipping this,Aaron Patterson said were changing from,a github to a git switch for higher, throughputs, now Aaron actually works again up and we,are very proud to see him exemplifying,or focus on performance and latency with, this idea Thank You Aaron and finally, many of you made the same suggestion and,you were so passionate about it and I,want you to know weve heard you you, want Clippy you really want clip you can,get hub but Im sorry to say were not, shipping Clippy yet okay so to,understand what we are shipping today I,want to just take a step back and, explain a little bit about how we see,the world and software development a,github so when you think about how, developers write software today the, image that we have in our head is,usually the image of the loan developer, right we think of developers as loners,as sort of introverts who work by,themselves maybe in a darkroom you know, with the door closed just them and their, computer and like you sort of slip pizza, under the door and you know you get code, out the other side thats the archetype, right its this archetype of Solitude, but in reality this is not how software, gets created right and in reality, software development is deeply, collaborative in every line of code that,we each write builds on the work of,thousands of other people were all kind,of all a part of this interconnected, community where each person who writes, code gets to leverage and build on the, work of others were standing truly on,the shoulders of every other developer, whos come before us and so thats why,for us it get up our mission is about, this our mission is to build the global, platform for developer cooperation its,a kind of a magical thing were this, website where strangers come together, and build things they build the future, together and like in 2019 strangers on,the Internet is a little bit of a scary, concept right and so the fact that, strangers can come together and make, things is awesome so we think about this,a lot we think about how developers, cooperate how they share their work with, each other and how they build on their, work and so sometimes this is simple, right sometimes its me looking at some, code youve written, maybe copying and pasting, you know a method or a piece of code off,a gist or Stack Overflow and just like, putting that into my work or sometimes,Ill read your code and Ill learn how, youve solved a problem and then Ill,apply that same you know lesson to the, work that Im doing but more and more, developers cooperate in open source by,importing open source packages that, others have written and weve heard in,our conversations with developers how, critical it is for you to be able to,find packages that you can trust and, rely on and put them in your dependency, graph so that you can actually build on,them and many of you have asked us,whether we can provide a way for you to,publish your work directly on github and,so today Im pleased to announce our, newest product to get hub packaged, registry there it is,your code your packages all together, behind one account your github account, okay so when we set out to build github, package registry we set three goals for, ourselves our first goal was to give, maintainer x an easy way to share their, work with the whole world easily on,github our second goal was to help teams, improve their velocity and be more, efficient and productive adopt best, practices and be able to actually, automate their software development, lifecycle and then finally were really, focused on this idea of security and,Trust and so we want to build the, worlds most secure and trusted package, registry that can link your code to your, commits and releases all the way through,to your packages so you have that full, traceability so those were our three, goals now tell you a little more about, getting a package registry as you might, expect its fully integrated with github, including with our releases and with, search it allows anyone with a github, account to publish packages to their, registries it provides both public and, private registries and today were, shipping out of the box with support for, five registry protocols NPM rubygems, nougat maven and docker more are coming,so this will work with all your existing, packaging tools and work great with any,CI system that youre already using or,that you might choose to use in the, future okay the best way to understand, the power of the get up packaged, registry is to see it so should we do a,demo what do you think – demo get
