Belfast reviewed by Mark Kermode

as ken browner pointed out when he its, also ken or kenneth is he sir isnt he,he said i think you had anything oh,queen i think you call him ken anyway, its i mean it is clearly his most, personal film to date um,he wrote and directed it took, inspiration from his own childhood in,belfast and he,spoke about the incident in his, childhood that kind of sparked all of,this when you know he lived on a street, that he knew and that he understood and, everyone knew his name everyone knew, your name and then, and then you know the rise of the, troubles and suddenly there were, barricades and bridges and divisions and,he talked about how,he remembered this, and so this is kind of then turned into, this story in which uh newcomer jude, hill is buddy, whos a nine-year-old in uh belfast, whose father, played by jamie dawn and has to go,across the water to work and he so hes, left largely in the care of his uh of,his mum, and, his, concerns are the concerns of a,nine-year-old um hes fallen in love, with a girl in the class, and as you do as you do and shes very, clever and hes very worried he wants to,sit next to her but in order to sit next,to her because the class is designed in,sort of top tier you know the cleverer, you are the nearer you are to the to the, teacher and hes not quite clever enough,to be on the top table he hasnt done, well enough in the test but hes working, really hard to get to be on the right, and then just as he does, something happens so she,she moves down and hes,hes this is what his life is concerned, with and his partners granny who were, played by um kieran hines and judy dench, are there to help and to offer advice, and the thing he has to do now is a,project um about the moon landings, heres a clip we have to do a project, about the moon london, what did those boys not come back from, that they did now we have to cut things, out of the papers and explain how they, got there,if they did get there they didnt get to,the moon so what it says here god, doesnt like it,and i watched every night too that they, were up there and how did i never see my,clones in the mothership doing his orbit, sure you would have seen the sheep of,columbus against the light of the moon,no thats because mostly he was on the, dark side exactly its the side that, lucifer hangs his chalet no he was on,the dark side of the moon most of the, time where we couldnt see him you know, when he was doing his orbit and then, maybe you know just before he was due to,come around the corner you had to go in,for your tea if i could come up with, something smart about that, maybe i could step at the top desk and, wait till she gets back there, you can see the moons made of green, cheese and dropped down apparently well, you could do the project together you,and a young lady, you get the same marks and maybe end up,on the same seat together i mean its,not possible to listen to that without, beaming, agreed, and so you know life is initially, idyllic and then, life becomes less idyllic when suddenly, everything starts to become divided, and,he suddenly finds himself in the middle,of what at times looks like a war zone, now, whats interesting is that on the on the,one hand i mean the filmish the film has, been compared to john bormans hope and, glory because its that thing about, looking at a period of you know trouble, through the eyes of a child and the way,in which a child sees things and you, know the film does have a very kind of,uh rather lovely childs eye view of the, world i dont mean childish i mean, childs eye view in the same way that, you know spielberg would also like, alfonso rons roma,um its presented in black and white and, when you asked branner about it he said, well because partly because i remember, the past in black and white and partly, because it enabled me to do infinite, shades of grey which fits the deeper, subject matter of you know of whats, going on in the story, and that black and white is then, interrupted with flashes of color, specifically when they go to the cinema, chitty chitty bang bang is suddenly in,full color theres a lovely moment in,which theres a reflection a color, reflection in the glasses of its if it,is granny isnt it and theyre watching, the screen and you see,the you see the color reflected i mean, throughout cinema people have done that, you know black and white i mean whether, its rumblefish or schindlers list or,you know that idea about you have a,black and white film but it has little, flashes of color and its a technique, which is not,new and unique but its used rather well, and its used rather well in terms of,that you go to the cinema and, everythings everythings in glorious, widescreen and technicolor the the thing,i do want to flag up is just what a debt, this owes to terence davis and terence, daviss early film certainly in that, thing about the memory of going to the, cinema and the cinema being, you know magical there are things in,belfast when you look at it and you look,at buddy looking at the screen and you, look at the the way in which thats, portrayed that is absolutely, something which which owes a debt to,terrence davis and i say that as a,compliment and the reason i say is,because im pretty certain that belfast,is going to win best picture,um i mean obviously were not in,nominations yet but its the reason i,think it is is because on the one hand, its you know critics like it very much, and it feels personal and on the other, hand, ordinary audiences who arent, necessarily cineasts love it ive seen, the film with i mean for example,my brother and uh and his partner, watched it with us and they loved it and,you know they watch films and everything, but theyre not they wouldnt consider, themselves film buffs they just film, goers and they loved it they just, thought it was great they knew nothing, about it in advance but they just loved,it,and i feel the same way, about uh,that you know that sweet spot when it,comes to a best film is i mean i know, that things like power the dog are being, you know very very touted for better but, this feels to me like it has that, perfect balance and, terence davis has a new film which is,coming out im a huge fan of terrence, davis and i just want to kind of,acknowledge that that this is a this is,a field that he has plowed previously,i you know the um you talked about the,the van morrison thing i mean the best, thing you can say is that you listen to,these van morrison tunes and you, remember what it was like to listen to,van morrison without feeling conflicted,um and there are sort of,there are there are so many smile out, loud moments,in the midst of you know what can at,times be a you know a dark and, tumultuous story yeah youd have to be,pretty hard-hearted,not i mean you could say well its you, know its slightly schmaltzy and its, slightly every now and then its a,little sticky, but youd really have to be a grinch, not to come out of it beaming yes also, the, point which is going to come up in,one of the letters from uh one of our, listeners this theres a sequence to,towards it its not a spoiler where,uh,jamie dornan does,um everlasting love,by the love affair yeah which is a,strange moment yeah but i its a great i,thought it was terrific and i love that, song it has one of the greatest openings,to a pop song ever yeah and it just said, yeah ive seen it three ive seen the, movie three times now the last time was, with a whole bunch of new people hadnt, seen it before and exactly the same, experience as you had with your with, your family they just absolutely please, can i ask you because about their, sequence, did you imagine that thats its a,fantasy sequence or that its,how real is that no i think oh i hadnt, thought of it as a fantasy i thought it,was a i thought it was real okay, let me do these emails and then well, come back, you

Belfast (2021) Movie Review

its that time of the year where the, awards contenders begin to be released, now i just saw belfast could it be,something that grabs a lot of,nominations but you know what more, importantly is it a film that you should, check out,a nine-year-old boy must chart a path, towards adulthood through a world that, has suddenly turned upside down in 1960s,northern ireland the story was written, and directed by kenneth brenna and, supposedly he draws on a lot of his own, experiences as a kid to craft this story, the film is a beautiful one to look at,it opens with modern images of the, surrounding country shown all in color, and then it creatively transitions to,the past where the presentation is in,black and white there are other times, within the story where landscapes are, shown and brana allows the camera to,just patiently sit on a scene even when, nothing is going on within the frame and,no people are present i mean we get to,contemplate whats going on within the, story and sometimes its a brief, reprieve from some heaviness we meet the, central character of the story buddy, through a joyously chaotic sequence that, then quickly erupts into violence and, this sets the stage very quickly that, while there will be good times shown, within the story everything we witnessed, was going to be set against a backdrop,of growing tensions and violence many of,the scenes within this story take place,on buddy street with the occasional, excursions to his school and to his, granny and pops place and this creates,a very quaint and familiar setting, reinforcing how most of the characters, know their surroundings and have never, left belfast and then can never imagine, living anywhere else the film showcases, the talents of an awesome cast we have, katrina balf jamie dornan judy dench and, karen hines theyre all wonderfully cast, allowing to bring some relatable, interactions now sometimes theyre dryly, funny other times theyre rightfully, terrified and still other times they are, calmly extolling wisdom they have, wonderful chemistry together and they, play off each other in ways that make, them feel like a genuine family now as,awesome as they are the real standout of,the film is newcomer jude hill i mean, this kid is sweet charming inquisitive, hes wise beyond his years and hes, terribly funny there are conversations, that he has where he absolutely sucked,me into it because of his emotion and,his expressions theres one point where, hes having a conversation with his, cousin and not only is it just a really, entertaining exchange but buddy brings,to light some wonderful logic and then, pairs it with subtly hilarious body, language its really hard not to root, for his character no matter whats going,on within the story now because this, story does take place as violence is,erupting between protestants and, catholics theres a fair amount of,underlying dread that follows the entire, film i think there were many, opportunities for brana to dive deeper, into the mire and show how dark things, really became but he chooses to show us,just enough to paint the picture and, then create an understanding without, having to put us into the bell jar of,despair i actually appreciate the fact, that this didnt get as dark as it could,i mean were really just following the, family as they have to begin to make, decisions based on whats occurring, around them do they stay where they know, the surroundings and the people even, with growing danger or do they trek out, into the unknown and move to a place, where they dont know anybody with a,hopes that it will be a safer place for, their children to grow up this in itself,is a great struggle that is displayed, and it allows for some very moving, conversations and then story tension and, just because the film doesnt go as dark,as it could that doesnt mean that there, arent explosive moments within the, story where we can feel danger and peril, for our characters those exist and at,times they get very exciting now because, this is branas story and its at least,semi-autobiographical,we get to see some small nods to some of,the things that influence the boy who, becomes a filmmaker there are several, times within this where buddy and other, members of his family are watching, movies and we get to see how they are, exciting and captivating for him we also, see him attend stage plays and even at,one moment hes reading a thor comic, which i especially enjoyed since he,ended up directing the first thor movie, for the mcu now one creative aspect that, brenna uses in this is when buddy is,watching a film in the theater or,watching a stage play those images are,in color and its showcasing the, imagination and fantasy of a world that,he gets to observe and at one point, during a stage performance we can see, some reflections of the acting that are,in judy denchs glasses and while she,and the rest of the audience are, completely in black and white the, reflections are shown still in color, thats a small detail but one that i,really appreciated carrying the, aesthetic that was created just all the,way through the music is also something, that really stands out in this i loved, the soundtrack and especially enjoyed, how the music is actually part of the, storytelling we see record spinning and, radios playing with speakers then drag,to windows so that everybody can dance,in the street now there are some, repetitive sequences within this but, they dont feel out of place or really, even bothersome i call them repetitive, because we watch similar actions take, place several times but theyre, necessary to not only show the passage,of time but also to show how some of,life has to continue on despite, hardships and struggles now this is a,surprisingly short film at only 98,minutes i didnt feel rushed and i cant, even think of portions where i would, have liked to have lingered longer the, conversations and actions are executed, efficiently and impactfully without, drawing them out unnecessarily this is,actually a very easy movie to like the, characters are engaging and charismatic,i mean the story is simple but it,contains some wonderful depth to the, message and the imagery is beautiful to,watch drawing us in with settings that, are immersive i think the message thats, contained within this is also wildly, applicable for today the main tensions, surround the true conflict between, protestants and catholics but its the, intolerance that each share for the, other that mirrors todays world theres,a point at the very end of the film, where jamie dornans paw is talking to,buddy about a girl that buddy likes but,who also happens to be catholic pot, tells him that she could be southern, baptist or a vegetarian antichrist among, several other things and as long as she,is kind shed be welcome in their home,so that level of tolerance and, acceptance was beautiful and i thought,it was a great way to cap the story now, this does have a slight art house feel,to its execution which im afraid could, keep mass audiences from seeing it but i,wouldnt classify this as an art house, film i mean it may not be superheroes or,a sequel but it is an original tale with,a wonderful message executed with wit,and charisma by stellar actors and hey,its a feel-good movie to boot so,overall belfast is a love letter of,sorts to branaghs childhood and his, years living in the quaint and then, tumultuous title city the acting is,spectacular with the highlight truly, being jude hill while the story could, dive into more of the harrowing aspects,of the tensions of the city it chooses,to use that violence only as the, backdrop for shaping the world and, conversations within the narrative this, also helps to create a message that, informs us of the past but also, instructs us for the present this is a,charming movie filled with heart and, humor theres no sex or nudity but there,is a bunch of profanity and violence i,give belfast four and a half out of five, couches what are you looking forward to,watching is there a particular movie, that youve just been chomping at the,bit to see id love to hear what it is,in the comments below

Belfast – Movie Review

good evening this is the oscar x here, with brother bro its time to review, belfast this is the newest film from, kenneth branagh whos bringing us a,rather personal story that is said to be,autobiographical of his time growing up,in belfast during a time of conflict, breaking out in the streets between, christians and protestants belfast has,had a great week since its premiere at,telluride people are like this is,winning the peoples choice theres no,doubt about it and then when it does win,the peoples choice its going to be the, best picture front runner and its going,to win screenplay yeah it takes a lot of,the marks of an oscar bait film its in,black and white it has this whole, ensemble of well-known cast members and, everybody sort of gets their moment to,shine youre imagining sag ensemble as a,nomination this will probably get its, charming and funny it has a really good, sense of humor it also touches on a part,of history that not many people know, about tying in the intimate family life, with a broader social unrest thats for,the oscars thats what theyre here to,watch and eat up and the main character, has a love for cinema they threw that, one in there for sure and the movies are,in color and the rest of its not in,color i was really gripped by the first, scene in about a five minute sequence i,feel it like sums up exactly what is,coming and what the movie is ultimately, about it does a really good job of doing,it in a very concise way and it feels, very well made and well crafted theres, some really good attention to,sound in these scenes and another one, later on the use of music throughout a,scene like really transforms it into, something special yeah there were a lot,of really strong directing choices here, like a lot of really good compositions, some shots where i was thankful that, kenneth branagh was willing to hold on,it and were just watching the actors in,a longer take and the cinematography, looked really good too it felt like the, black and white was pretty well thought, out its not like a roma, stunning mank use of black and white but, visually the film was a little stronger, than i was even anticipating i actually,do have a couple of bones to pick with, the cinematography at times the camera, felt a little bit unmotivated or shaky, which is really not something id expect, out of this film especially if its in,black and white i want everything to,feel very precise i didnt always feel, and i also thought there was a little, bit of an overuse of close-ups oh i like, the close-ups no i thought overall they, were good you really get everything, thats happening on the actors face and, there are a lot of rich moments in the, film i mean every rich moment was kind,of played out in a close-up in each of,these supporting characters gets their,close-up moment all of them do a great, job its hard not to like any of these, characters everybody in the movie is,very likable and the movie is very sweet, and there are going to be moments that, either make you cry or make you well up,a little bit i definitely felt that a,few times the movie overall just feels, like a tribute to this family or a,community of people a lot of it is about, like the people around our central, character kind of patting them and, protecting like their innocence the, characters themselves are dealing with, something very external and theres not,a lot of like personal internal conflict, going on here and for me that resulted,in the end sort of feeling like a bit of,a fizzle because there wasnt a really, strong character moment or decision it,just felt like kind of an obvious, conclusion that we were sort of going, towards the whole movie and then it,happened and then it was over it didnt, really give me that wow moment that i,was expecting maybe just because i heard, this was like a best picture front, runner kind of movie and there were, other people who did seem moved in that, way though you know people were crying,in the theater at the ending and i was, just kind of not really quite there i do,agree with all that the plot of the film, was very simple and basic which is not a,bad thing but i dont think it elevated, beyond that in a way that was really, interesting but i think where the film, shines is more about what we see of the, family as we go on this journey and how,we come to understand the childs, relationship to everyone and just the, love for his parents and grandparents, shines through i think that is what, makes the movie special so while it,doesnt have a strong arc for character, development i can see that aspect being, enough for people so speaking of you, know the family we got like five central, performances here we got the kid jude, hill he is the lead of the movie hes a,really great find i mean like we were, saying there are scenes where the camera,is just like this close to his face and,hes not making any wrong moves hes, really good hes very charming and, audiences are going to fall in love with, him hes responsible for so much of what,is funny in this film his facial, expressions are so charming and, transparent he was a great vehicle for, this film and he was the standout, performance for me he outshined, everybody in a sense he reminded me of,the kid and jojo rabbit a little bit as,well yeah but i think were gonna see, him, have a career aside from jude hill i,think the main standout for me was, katrina belf as the mother in this movie, she had a couple moments that were very, very strong from her there was one that, pulled me like very tightly into the, movie emotionally whereas i was kind of,like on the outside waiting to get that, and then she just brought me in like, very quickly and i was like oh you,did it jamie dornan was also a real, standout for me he plays the patriarch,of the family and he is like the rest of,the ensemble very likable and funny and,the charm that comes through makes him, someone thats really easy to relate to,and understand those two performances, were the strongest for me yeah i like, that jamie dornan was like the protector,of his family and it felt like very safe,to have him as the father but hes also, not somebody who has all the power to do,anything and honestly when i watch 50,shades i was like dakota johnsons very, good and shes going places i do not, know about this other guy but now i do,know now i do know the other supporting, performances that people are making note,of is obviously judy dench isnt this, film she plays the grandma like, everybody else likeable and sweet she, doesnt get as much of a moment to shine,as the previous two performers we,mentioned so i maybe would have wanted a,little bit more out of her a lot of the, characters come through as like just a,really warm personality and i would say,the same for the grandfather in the film, played by kieran hines though he does, have a really poignant moment you know, again in a close-up that is very, powerful thats one of the highlights of,the film he definitely had an oscar, moment which i sort of wanted from judy, dench a little bit more but when you say, oscar moment for that character i dont, know if it would have been an oscar, moment if they didnt just hold in a,close-up i think what branagh does well,is when there is a moment for a,character to shine he makes sure you see, their face as they deliver these, monologues what do you think about whos, getting nominated here because ive been, hearing some rumors that maybe theyll, put balf and dornan in lead and then, heinz and supporting and in terms of,screen time like there is a sort of,tiered distinction in my mind but still,it would be ridiculous if they put, balfour dornan in lead that would be,ridiculous its not even close i dont, think we should even be having that, conversation anymore i feel like the, studio should definitely just put, everybody in supporting and if they did,i would definitely expect valve to be,nominated i agree that it wouldnt be a,good strategy to put anybody in lead, except for jude hill based on the fact, that the screen time they all have is,that of a supporting contender and i,mean theyre pr

Belfast Ending Explained: A Sad Goodbye| Belfast Movie Real Meaning Explained| Kenneth Branagh| 2022

welcome to explainer insight, today im going to explain the movie, belfast, belfast is a coming-of-age drama film, written and directed by british actor, and filmmaker kenneth branagh, the directors early childhood was spent,in his native irish city of belfast and,the film is a sweet remembrance of his, times there amidst the bitterness of,political turmoil, the film begins with short scenes of,modern day belfast its harbour, architecture and cityscape, soon it shifts to history with a shift, from colour to black and white as well,to a specific day in history for the,15th of august 1969.,young nine-year-old buddy is playing on,the streets of his caring and friendly, neighborhood, however things take a very ugly turn, quickly as an angry mob rushes into, hurling stones and vandalizing houses, and buddy is made to protect himself, with his make-believe trash can shield, the boy is made aware and the audience,as well that the mob was part of a riot,of protestants raging across all of the, city against catholic citizens, the people of the neighborhood start, rebuilding and helping each other, irrespective of their religious, differences and the english army rushes,in to create an armed blockade at the, entry of the street, buddy lives with his mother ma elder, brother will and his extremely caring, grandparents while his father parr lives, and works in england and visits them on,weekends, the young boy who belongs to a,protestant family through conversations, with schoolmates and people around, starts to realize differences between, people of different faiths although his, healthy liberal upbringing does not make, him turn against catholics,he is rather disinterested and scared of,going to church for sermons and instead, loves watching american films, despite the neighborhoods best efforts,to get back to normalcy trouble keeps, brewing underneath and the local leader,of the riots billy demands pas, involvement in their activities, par walks away from the altercation,he aims to leave the country with his, family and settle somewhere abroad and, buddy overhears this one night, however he does not really understand, what it might mean and instead focuses,on learning his math problems and, befriending catherine his classmate from, school who he really likes and wants to,marry after growing up,meanwhile it grows more and more, difficult for the children to stay away, from the unfortunate realities of the, time, will is asked by the troublemakers to,deliver things for them and buddy is,taken along by his elder cousin moira to,steal chocolates from a candy store, their plan goes terribly wrong and the, young boy is heavily reprimanded by his, mother once she gets to know about it,billy creates more pressure on par who, grows more desperate to leave the, country but ma tries her best to,convince him not to move as she does not, want to go away from her known, surroundings, the troubles what were riots shown in,the film about, the northern ireland conflict locally, known as the troubles was an,ethno-nationalist and sectarian conflict, that raged in the country for almost 30,years and it also forms the main, backdrop of the films narrative, although the conflict was mostly based, around nationalist sentiments it quickly, took a religious turn due to historical, and ethnographic reasons into a brutally, violent fight between the protestants, and the catholics, around that time one section of the, irish people most of whom happened to be,catholic wanted to break away from the, rule of the united kingdom and unite, with the republic of ireland which had, already been a republic independent from, the uk since 1937,the other section however wanted to keep, northern ireland under the queens rule, and separate from ireland and they, mostly happen to be protestants, this conflict about the administration,of northern ireland as a nation soon, turned into a personal fight between the,two sects of christianity, official figures state that more than 3,500 people have been killed and many, have been displaced and forced to move, away like buddys family in the film and, branas family in reality, despite the film not getting into the, depths and analyses of the troubles the, conflict and its direct impact on,society form the backbone of the films, events and their motivations, numerous instances of actual newsreels, and clips from the time period being, shown in the film add to the, authenticity as well, the family is having very serious, thoughts about moving away from belfast, when one afternoon but he unknowingly, joins one of the riots that vandalizes, and loots a departmental store,he is taken by moira to join a growing, mob as they all march angrily towards, the store which is presumably run by,catholic citizens, buddy is scared of what he sees around, him and wants to go home but his, childish innocence ultimately makes him, perceive the loot as a means to get hold,of anything he wants, grabbing a box of detergent he runs home, and tells his mother about it,livid at her sons actions she takes him, back to the store and also gets hold of,moira,as she makes them return the stolen, items to the shelves they are taken, hostage by billy and his men as a way of,escaping the police and armed forces who, arrive on the scene, par and will also rush to the street and,as billy tries to shoot a gun they, heroically manage to disarm him and save, their family members, the entire film being from the, perspective of little buddy this scene, plays out heroically as well almost, resembling the shootout between the hero, and the villain in hollywood westerns, that buddy secretly watches on his home, television, belfast ending explained a sad goodbye, the family gets back to their home and,ma takes an emotionally charged decision,to give in to pas wish of moving to,england, some time back it was established that, buddys grandfather who was his loving, friend guide and math teacher as well, was getting ill due to old age,one morning the boy has to run to his, father sitting at a pub to tell him the, news of his grandfathers demise and to,bring him home, the family holds his funeral with a,heavy heart and then tries to accept the, death and move on with it as they, prepare to leave, par takes buddy to bid farewell to,catherine on the morning of their, departure,he takes flowers and a letter to her and,she gifts him a book on mathematics, the innocently adoring relationship is,ended off as the two make promises to,return and meet again, the family then boards a bus to the, airport while the grandmother walks up,to their now vacant house, she looks at the bus as it drives away, and buddy turns to look at her and his, neighborhood for one last time,at its very core and underneath all the, comedy and innocence belfast is also, about the very heartbreaking experience,of having to move away from ones own, place of origin, the film offers respect to the millions,of people who have been and still are, displaced from their own homes due to,political and social turmoil, particularly to the ones directly, affected by the northern ireland, conflict, texts appearing at the very end of the, film read for the ones who stayed for,the ones who left and for all the ones, who were lost, overall belfast becomes a nice and, touching watch with it almost striking, all the chords that it wants to touch, great performances by the entire cast, and a storytelling focused narrative, along with beautifully appropriate music,by van morrison a native of belfast, himself make it an excellent retelling,of the directors own experience of real, events of his childhood, that was all from the video,i hope you liked it,subscribe for more content like this and,hit the like button to help us out, also leave a comment if you want us to,explain your favorite movie, until next time Dame Judi Dench On Starring In The Oscar Tipped Belfast & Perfecting The Northern Irish Accent |TM

[Music],were about to show you something that, really always always makes me smile, makes my heart sing, and its about to happen shes one of,the best actresses in british history so,its no surprise that dame judi dench, has delivered another dazzling, performance lets have a look because, this is the picture of judy dench shes, sitting there with a big smile on her, face thats what makes my heart seem, thats what i like to say i know how to,make cinnamon bun, yeah there you go did you know how to do,them before,no im the worst cook in britain, not anymore not anymore right well have,a chat uh with julian moment because she,and the rest of the cast have put in,some stellar performances in kenneth, branaghs new film belfast,it is absolutely sublime so brilliant, amazing film at the legendary dame judy, lynch is joining us now always a,pleasure to have you here thank you for,for talking to us and so this um this, started off for you because obviously, youve worked with ken for such a long, time, really really good friends and he sent, you a message saying that he wanted to,come over and read something to you,he did,he uh he said i want to come over and, read you something ive written, recently and i said absolutely and we,arranged a day,and he arrived and he sat down, and he read it to me without a break, and we i sat there completely riveted,uh,and,as you im sure you know and im sure, you said anyway that its his uh its,the story of his, childhood in belfast being brought up,during the troubles so how easy was it,for him to stand in front of you,and read something,so personal and um where like he,actually he he said ill read this to,you um he said i remember life turning,on its head in one afternoon almost in,slow motion not understanding the sound,i was hearing then turning around and, looking at the mob at the bottom of the, street and life was never ever the same, again and we see the idyllic way that, life was before 1969 almost the day, before when the the community and the, street are together and suddenly this, happens and people whove known each, other for their whole lives are split, apart how easy was it for him to read, that in front of you, well i,uh it seemed to be,uh quite easy and calm and uh,and and of course, the stuff he knew and hed written and, then there was a moment, when i just remembered there was a very, very long pause, right and we both completely quiet, during it and um it it was for kenny, very emotional and certainly for me too,and then he went on and got to the end, and, there was no question in my mind but, that i wanted to,play his grandmother who i initially, said im much too young to play your, grandmother but of course it turned out, well i mean its uh its its not its,not flattering for sure uh but because, you are beautiful but uh but,uh in in the in the movie so the only, reason i said it,is that uh,you you can see,the heart of the family the way that, family worked you um as uh as um as the, grandmother um and and kieran hines as,the as the grandfather these two, rock solid pillars in this family who, were vital to holding it together, yes and um,i had not id admired kieran hines for a,long long time but we had never worked, together but there was something about,um the fact that we,we were at the beginning of lockdown, that we were suddenly able and allowed,to do this film, incredible care was taken of everybody,we were tested every single day every, member of the crew, and the cast and um,um so in a way because we were all so,released from this oppressive feeling um,we became a family very quickly yeah wow,we actually it was it was amazingly, helpful,i have i have to say judy when i watched,it last night and its incredible youd, watch it over the weekend i think we and,i really really enjoyed it and one thing,i really took away from the film was, that real sense of family but i have to,say jude hill who plays young buddy i,mean in what is his debut film he wasnt, hes 11 now and he was nine when you, were shooting this he is absolutely, outstanding isnt he,he is outstanding and can show us all,the way home,he was so fantastic at taking, direction,i mean completely like,an actor whod had 25 years worth you, know of experience yeah but uh he,i believe is a is an irish dancer he,does some irish dancing but um he was, just he was just a complete natural and,he was always full of energy, and,no complaints, and, just enormous fun to be with yeah i mean, well i i i think for a,child that young actor is possibly the, best ive, ever seen his face is so expressive you,can see the emotions changing on his, face it really is quite extraordinary a,natural gift yeah yeah yeah yeah so hes, going to be dont you think and uh,he is and dont you think uh that he,that that could have been ken as a,little boy yes definitely yeah, definitely um uh i mean the whole, everything you can see that its so,personal um the the,the music the way its shot,um the um the the interactivity with the, with this with this family and with the, community around them and you also, youve got your own irish roots havent, you,oh i hit indeed i have my mother was, born in dublin,my father went from dorset where he was, born to dublin with the family and so,all my relations are in dublin and the, west and,and my grandmother i think was, born in county meat,uh and so i have, yes and after,uh the war we were all in yorkshire, after the war my,parents said i was about um,i dont know 10 or 11. they said to me,were going to see,on tuesday were going to see a film, called the night boat to dublin, and i thought oh how exciting huh, absolutely thrilling but it wasnt it,wasnt a film at all we were going on,the night boat today good great and, thats when we went back and thats when, they went back for the first time wow um,and i can remember very very clearly, coming into danglieri harbour,in the morning, and im standing up looking at the, wicklow hills and i can sense now, incredibly strong emotion,as that happened and they saw it again, how did um how did it feel for you to uh,obviously there has to be a belfast uh,accent there was that something because,of the irish roots i mean its very very, different accents here so im assuming, did can help you with that its a its a,nightmare, its a nightmare um its a nightmare uh,i had an uncle who lived in belfast and,who was much younger than me and he came, over to stay with us in new york and he,used to he used to say this little rhyme, and i used to make him repeat it must, have been a nightmare of a holiday he,had with us because i used to make him, repeat this little rhyme which was in,the corner of my bedroom theres a great, big carton someone lives behind it and i,dont know who,i think it is a brownie and im not, quite certain nanny isnt certain too,and i used to say that every day,im so good,oh man, well its a lot of times yes i was the, kind of naughty girl of the class and, kept being pulled up by kelly, said no thats not right thats, really yeah right well its true it was, right in the end it most certainly works,it is i mean its being lauded and its, been tipped for oscars and, major accolades you as always are quite, brilliant and the relationship between, you and and kieran hines is you know as,i said its just so beautiful these um,these essential parts of a family um,its uh its a wonderful film judy and, thank you so much for for talking to us,about it its um belfast is out tomorrow,in cinemas um and it is definitely one,to go and see actually i think go and,see it in a cinema because you want yeah, the music is is so incredible is that, you want the whole it deserves that, figure, thank you thank you, great thank, you starstruck,we love her right bucket list, you

Belfast (2021) – Movie Review

belfast is the newest film from director, kenneth branagh and is the movie that my,grandmother is looking forward to the, most at the end of the year so nana if,youre watching this movie review is for,you i was lucky enough to see this film, early and im gonna give you my quick, thoughts right now,[Music],hey everybody my name is brandon icky, the brando critic thank you guys so much, for being here im sending you all, positive vibes your way and im going to,give you my honest no bs take on belfast, and let you know if its worth a watch, but if you guys are new here and you, want to see more early movie reviews, just like this movie reactions and hang, out live streams where we talk about, movies then this is the place for you, consider hitting that like and subscribe, button i really do appreciate all the, support and make sure you go check out,my partners at movies in canada as well, their link will be down below in the, description so,we have belfast from director kenneth, branagh and you know him from harry, potter and the chamber of secrets as,gilderoy lockhart but behind the camera, you know him from thor cinderella the,live-action version artemis fowl, yikes and murder on the orient express, and it stars jamie dornan judy dench, katrina belf kieran hines and, introducing the new young jude hill his, first feature length appearance its, about a young boy living his childhood,in belfast northern ireland in the 1960s,but hes living in a world that is,ridden by,conflict he lives on a street where, theres this gang war between, protestants and catholics but is this, movie worth a watch yes absolutely and,im not just saying this to any irish, people out there im saying this to,anyone who likes good movies this coming,of age story should not be missed by,anyone now like i said earlier my,grandmother is irish and a large part of,my family is irish so on a personal, level i enjoyed watching this movie, because i havent been to northern, ireland per se but ive been to cork, ireland and ive been to some other, parts around the southern parts of the, country and you know i like seeing the,the irish culture on screen but why do i,think that this movie is worth a watch, for everyone i love how this world is,built because every single shot tells, multiple stories in it now when i was in,film school and i was filming my final, project that was one thing that i needed,to work on and one of the film, professors was like brandon your shots, dont have any vibrancy to them you need,to add layers you need to have stories, going on in the foreground the, background the mid-ground and this movie,is the ultimate textbook example of how,to do that effectively because you have, our main character just walking to,school like thats like the subject of,the shot thats whats really happening,in the story but to build the world, around the character you have in the, foreground you have some barbed wire, where youre seeing the character walk, through and then in the background you, have a helicopter with searchlights so,yes this is telling us that kids are, just going about their normal lives but,you have this chaos and this way of life, going on around him that he might not be,really aware of or fully understand it,but its there and every single shot, theres something happening in the, background that tells a story something, that happens in the foreground that, tells a story and it just really creates, the slice of life that is just so,effective because i feel like ive been,to belfast in the 1960s even though i,clearly havent another reason is that i,just love the characters literally every, single character in this movie i just, completely adore and i love how we hear, many characters names only through the, ears of our main character buddy the 10,year old kid ma pa pop granny i dont, know their actual names we just know, them as ma and paw because we are along, the ride with our main character whos, only 10 years old and speaking about our, main character played by jude hill one,of the best child performances ive ever, seen and i dont say that lightly he is,phenomenal in this movie the real, breakout star he is going to go places, because like theres one scene and i i,knew that he was good in the movie like,i was watching the movie and im like, okay this kid is really great but one, scene in particular and again no major, spoilers but theyre talking to him the, parents are talking to him and theyre, going like well how would you feel if we,moved out of belfast you know we can get,a bigger house and say england and we,can get a garden and you can play, football and you can meet new friends, and then he starts just to freak out and,go i dont want to leave belfast i dont, want to go and im like dude that is,incredible that is absolutely incredible,it was completely mind-blowing how good,of a performance that he gave like just,oh wow and my favorite relationship in,the movie is between him and his, grandfather like i never had really that, relationship with my grandfathers, growing up because both of them died, when i was pretty young but that, relationship was just so charming and i,love how you know the grandfather will, tell him you know if youre doing your, math homework and you kind of like, scribble a little bit then you might not, know if its a seven or a two and then, you have a sixty percent chance of,getting it right because they dont know, they might just give you the benefit of,the doubt so that will make you get an a,in class which means that youll get to,be sitting up at the front of the class, next to the pretty girl also hey this is,how you get the girl to like you and,its just a great heartwarming, relationship and also katrina belf she,was phenomenal in this movie because she,has such a dynamic wide range of her, character that she portrays because you, know shes struggling to raise a family, and her husband is off working in,england and of course theres this, social political religious problem in,the streets and theyre behind on,payments but yet she still finds a way,to be optimistic and still put on a,brave face to be a mother for her, children and shes a great character as,well now some people may take issue that, the political aspects and the religious, aspects are merely a backdrop for the, story and theyre not really fully, explained or realized but my argument to,that is that we are following the story,of a 10 year old boy i didnt know, anything about social justice or,politics or religion really when i was,10 years old or what was really, happening in society youre just worried, about getting the girl in class to like, you and of course like i said earlier, when hes just walking to school and you, have things going on in the background,we as an audience know whats happening,in the world to a certain extent but,its just how it affects this boys life, and this movie has a message about what,is home what is our home now again not,to get too personal but there was a,moment in my life a brief moment in my,life where im like maybe should i move,to buenos aires argentina but i couldnt,do it because vancouver canada is my,home i grew up here i love it here and,its just a part of who i am now i,didnt you know live in like this, tyrannical government i dont live in,this situation where i have to leave but, some people will not leave a certain, situation because thats their home and, even in this movie theyre saying you, know i grew up here i know the people, here i know the culture here and yes, there are some hard times and there, might be some easier time somewhere else, but its not belfast and is home really, with the certain people that you love, its not a certain place i love when, they tackle subject matters like that, and overall there really is little wrong, with this movie and overall im gonna, give it a four out of five because i,really enjoyed it i dont think that, theres that one standout moment to say, like i love this movie maybe if i was, northern irish myself and i came from, belfast then this movie might really, speak to me but from a canadian guy who,has a little b
