Q & A With Lisa Ampleman, Editor of Cincinnati Review

welcome everyone thanks for coming out,im so excited to be here today with, lisa ambleman editor of cincinnati, review welcome lisa thank you for taking, time, thank you thanks for the invitation, doing good today everything good yes got, sunshine, its a good day yeah great, well lets jump right in um i was, looking at cincinnati review the site, and i was actually, surprised to see you guys were founded,in 2003 which is relatively recent like, when i think of cincinnati review i,think of this like old guard, one of the old guard journals um,but yeah its pretty pretty new uh can,you talk about like the founding why, what what inspired people to start it,were you involved with the initial, launch of the journal um and yeah just, the origin story, sure so um,there was a cincinnati poetry review, that preceded us unrelated to the, university, and so some people uh who are around, still remember that and mention their, appearance in that journal, but yeah we got started in 2003 and the, department,at the university the department of,english wanted to set up a literary, journal to support the graduate program,as well as to have said journal and,be working on promoting creative writing, more widely on a national, scale and they had this idea, and right around the same time uh nicola, mason moved to the area with her husband, michael griffith who was hired as a,fiction professor, and they both had extensive experience, with the southern review, and lsu press and so we almost feel like, those are cousins of ours in a way, because our,not our kind of our founder it wasnt, the idea didnt come from her but she,was the first one to do the work of,putting things together um,nicola was trained at southern review,um,so,yeah i mean until from 2003 until 2017,nicola mason was, cincinnati review um and uh when i look, back at those early, issues,um,they seem shorter and so im like oh it,would be nice to go back to a shorter, magazine,um but it also like from the beginning,it had a very,it had that traditional look that i,think is why you feel like its been, around for a long time yeah and um they, were able to establish themselves very, early uh with um uh strong writers and,um you know publishing the emerging, writers who end up becoming pretty well, known, yeah i think thats why um i have that, impression because i think of it as like, one of the top tier very prestigious, very competitive journals so that, automatically made me think oh must been, around forever,um but im also curious like,um,i dont know if you know like what what,is the secret sauce like how does a how, does a journal,um,become like a top-tier journal, that is a good question i think some of,it um,good or not has to do with the, anthologies like the best of anthologies, theo henry, and things like that so um,i know in the, first few years they had pieces picked,up by best american, essays and places like that and so i,think, that and the fact that it was started by,people who already had experience in the,lit meg world,um,i think thats thats part of it um,i i feel like the,top tier thing often also includes,um,the, submission to acceptance rate which for,us is pretty low,um but i i have to be honest like i,dont know that that,is either i think um,magazines that find a wide readership, that thinks that the work in the, magazine is worth, seeing in other venues whether its the, authors publications,or um the yearly anthologies, yeah that makes sense,um so lets go back to basics so you, guys publish three times a year, twice okay twice a year fiction poetry, drama,i love seeing that because its not, frequent that mags publish drama um and, what else literary nonfiction um so,essays and things like that we also have,a review feature most issues,um and we have an art portfolio a full, color glossy paper art portfolio and, every issue, that usually matches the artist on the, front cover okay and do you solicit the, visual artists or do they come we do yes,um yeah we rotate who works on,the selection and curation of that, portfolio we also have an online series,um that started in 2018,and uh we publish one piece a week its,um,flash fiction and non-fiction or hybrid, works so 500 words or less, and um poems 32 lines or less,um,so thats also been a place of growth, for us i would say,and is the content sounds like theres a,little bit of a difference between what, was published online versus print, yeah we do definitely publish poems, there are 32 lines or less in them in,the magazine, and same thing weve published flash in,the magazine as well um but uh we had,the opportunity when we were starting it,to,have direct curation by our graduate, student editors um and,uh the other,um,thing is you although we had a place in,the magazine for flash fiction we had, seen that um,flash fiction online has become,uh,its almost like a community like i see, people,um on twitter uh praising each other,um you know encouraging each other, theyve been in workshops together and,we were excited to tap into that kind of,creative well um and help them find, readers yeah thats great and do you, feel like you have like the stuff is,connecting with that particular group, definitely yeah i can almost tell when,um when someone who,has been in workshops with say kathy, fish whos a big name in that community,um publishes and says something, you know theres a lot of conversation, about it,and that was the other thing i feel like,um,the, print magazine world uh has a certain, cache but i also see writers especially,of younger generations, connecting more with, creative writing online just because of,the nature of how they experience text, yeah and we wanted to update our website, and have a space for things like that, yeah,um so you mentioned i was for the, graduate student so can you talk about, the editorial process is it um are the, editors mfa students and how does that, work, yeah so we have an ma and a phd program, and um we see our i think i mentioned, this kind of in the beginning but i feel, like we have a dual mission we have the, mission to put out that excellent piece,of of creative writing um in the in the, magazine, but also to train the future set of,editors and professionals in the field,of publishing through and so every year,i have three doctoral students, who work for me in lieu of teaching um,so its a graduate assistantship and, they get paid the same as the people who,are teaching, and instead theyre spending,uh 20 hours a week working with me,and so,they are writing blog posts theyre, reading submissions theyre curating the, micro theyre um working together with, the genre editors on content selection,um and then they are also taking on,professional projects of their own, choice so i have i have had students who,are interested in email newsletter, analytics for example theyre like when, when i graduate i want to make sure i,know, how to say that i know how to do that oh,yeah um and uh so thats just an example, but um so yeah the time the time fills,up um they do a little bit of,solicitation,uh of writers but most of what we accept, comes straight through the queue,um and the,we do have some volunteers so our our um,staff structure is this,im technically a half time person, and then i have a colleague matt okeefe, whos our senior associate editor hes, also permanent in half time and he,oversees our submission manager and, making sure submissions are going out to,people and moving through the the, process as well as some of our marketing, efforts um,and so what happens when a piece comes,in is that the first reader is often a,volunteer although it might be one of,those student editors if theyre caught,up with the rest of their reading and it,might be me if im you know pulling, straight from the queue, and um those volunteers are um,going through a semester process where,we talk about uh heres some pieces that,we read and these are the scores we,given them and we read behind them in,the beginning especially, and, make sure theyre kind of normed to what,we would expect,uh for the um,the numbers theyre giving to,submissions, and then yeah so the volu

there are some, really good little pockets of family fun, places you arent afraid to bring your, kids to and you can spend an afternoon, enjoying yourselves not avoiding gang, initiations one of the most popular, destinations is the cincinnati zoo and, botanical garden which just so happens,to be the second oldest zoo in the, united states there youll be able to,see over 500 animals as close up and as,personal as you want to be legally and, within the zoos parameters of course, the newport aquarium is also close by,and visited by thousands of people each, year another spot special for the, rugrats is the duke energy childrens, museum all of these places are, relatively cheap and serve as a nice, outing to keep the children in your life, off their electronics for a little while, con number one the crime, ohio cities are plagued by having, massive crime problems its not just, cincinnati toledo akron columbus but, since were talking about cincinnati im,gonna spit some cincinnati stats at you,the violent crime index here is a,hundred and thirty percent higher than, the national average and youve got a,one in 22 chance of becoming the victim,of a violent crime it is safer than only, four percent of similar sized cities in,the united states gang activity is,really high here its the type of place, where you have to be extra careful about, what youre doing unless youre in the, immediate downtown touristy areas,mind-altering substances are readily, available throughout the city and are a,big problem just proceed with caution, mind your biscuits and you shouldnt, have any issues, pro number two decent weather so,cincinnati gets all four seasons and, because of its location its actually, subjected to severe weather but its, nothing to really be scared about and if,you enjoy having actual seasons youll, enjoy it here the chance of snow can, happen as early as october but its, usually all wrapped up by march so you,can enjoy a nice spring as you, transition into summer generally during, the summer months it doesnt get over 90,degrees so you arent going to melt to,death during the winter you can get down, into the 30s for highs so dont pack, away all your sweaters you can also, expect about 44 inches of rain per year, which is higher than the national, average and 14.9 inches of snow to fall,it could be better but it could be worse, con number two abandoned houses do you, want to live in a neighborhood that, looks post-apocalyptic,or something straight out of the walking, dead set in cincinnati there are an,estimated 2 000 houses that are sitting, empty in all stages of disrepair many, being used for illicit activities like, the sales of bodies and mind-altering,substance use these abandoned houses are,a haven for criminals they also do,terrible things for the city like drive, down property values to those residents, who are hardworking and honest it also, makes the city look like its run down, and unsafe which in many parts is true, the abandoned house problem is so big,the city started the buy a house for one, dollar initiative many times selling, these houses with a promise youll rehab, them the problem is who wants to fix up,a house and live in the middle of decay,it just doesnt seem worth it livable, houses are cheap in cincinnati and there,is usually a reason for it oftentimes, theyre surrounded by all the blight, that the city is overrun with, pro number three sports you dont have,to sit at home to watch a game or go to,some dive sports joint with random, people to see whos taking home the, title in cincinnati you can see some, major league laying in action this is,thanks to cincinnati being home to not,one but three professional sports teams, that make up the mlb an nfl and mls, enjoy an experience sitting in the, stands and seeing the action in person,of a cincinnati reds baseball game sit, behind a goal post at the cincinnati, bengals game or check out the fc,cincinnati for some professional soccer, you can now fit in with all of the,like-minded sports fans in town by,seeing the game live and in,person, con number three air what, breathing is important and some places, are just better than others cincinnati, isnt breaking any records when it comes,to air quality its consistently ranked,in the bottom 10 of cities with the, worst air pollution the problem lies, with the 16 coal burning power plants, that produce 80 percent of the citys, power its got to come from somewhere i,guess on top of that the allergy scene, there is crazy bad not to mention the, ohio river is considered to be the most, polluted body of water in the country, with an estimated 23 million pounds of,chemicals being dumped into it each year, thats nuts, dont worry about the drinking water, though the city has a filtration system,to fix it and make it healthy i roll, pro number four tons of parks, cincinnati isnt all blight and,urban-ish landscape there are a ton of,parks there for you to use the citys, park system actually ranks eighth in the, country with fourteen percent of its, land being utilized as parks,seventy-seven percent of the residents, thinker actually live within a ten, minute walk to the park how cool is that, alms park and alt park were developed in,the late 1800s and are older than many,of the citys buildings everything has, grown and been built around them their, massive 700 acre davao park has a public, golf course and offer a lot of outdoor, activities like biking walking dog parks, and sports fields the largest park in,the city is mount airy there youll find,an 18-hole disc golf course cincinnati, gives you so many reasons to be outside, enjoying the natural elements of the, city while doing some of the things you, love, con number four drinking cincinnati is a,drinking town simple as that it just is,what it is the citys been ranked number, three in the country for breweries per, capita there are more than 40 local, breweries in cincinnati this is a great, thing if you like to get your drink on,on the other hand if you try to avoid, that scene it may be hard to overlook, friends and colleagues might ask you to,go get a pint your boss might invite you,for an ipa perhaps while walking through, downtown youll stumble into a pub to,watch the game and before you know it,youre 12 deep and cant find your hands, drinking is a big part of the culture in,cincinnati and it might be something you, arent used to so expect at least to,experience it while youre there, pro number five phenomenal libraries, normally you wouldnt think of,cincinnati and libraries as being in the, same sentence unless maybe you live, there and like to read a lot of books, but in case you didnt know cincinnatis, public library system has been ranked, one of the best in the country and has, earned the prestigious five-star library, ranking i didnt even know there was, such a thing its number three in the, country for being the busiest library, with 20 million checkouts per year, people in cincinnati like to get their, read on apparently i only wonder what, kind of books theyre checking out, anyway cincinnati is also the leader for, library visits circulation and public, internet use not only do residents there, enjoy reading but they also take, advantage of a lot of the services the, library system has to offer them, con number five no money cincinnati is,not the place you want to go if youre, trying to make a decent living while, working an honest job youll need to,have a side hustle or two while living, here the median household income is 37,lower than the national average a single, person here can expect to earn about 26,000 per year, the percent of its residents living in,poverty is right at 30 percent which is,98 higher than the national average,

Digitization Of Validation

this is the united podcast network, this is voices in validation brought to,you by ivt network, ivt network is your expert source for, life science regulatory knowledge, voices and validation brings you the, best in validation and compliance topics,we interview industry experts from, pharma biotech, med devices and laboratories here is the, host of voices in validation, stacy thank you and welcome to another, episode of voices and validation brought,to you by the ivt net network,as we continue to face business impacts, from copavid,a new normal may be emerging in,regulated industries such as pharma and, medical devices, when it comes to site visits and audits,as agencies, like the fda continue to rely on virtual, inspections we need to take a look at,the process, including review of documents and, processes and procedures, how can these inspections be more,hands-on and eyes on,allowing for efficient and accurate, outcomes so here today helping us to,better understand the intricacies of,remote inspection, are ajax hussein alton johnson and steve, thompson,so welcome to all of you thank you yeah, its great to have you,uh such a panel of experts assembled, today,um to talk about uh where were going, with uh the future of inspections uh the,the u.s food and drug administration has, postponed globally,um routine in-person inspections,uh for how long we dont really know, right now um but i wanted to,uh kick off todays discussion by,talking about the criteria thats being, considered when selecting facilities,uh as i understand its on a,case-by-case basis for remote, inspections, and better understand what the fda is,looking for,um or if the fda is looking for specific, performance markers to help alleviate, risk concerns and ajaz im going to,throw that one over to you, thank you stacy yes mission critical is,the key word there and mission critical, relates to,breakthrough therapies that are urgently, needed,[Music],a serious condition drugs for serious, conditions biologics or serious, conditions for which we dont have, alternatives,as well as for genetics, especially those generics that are prone,to shortages and, those we need i think uh the primary, drivers, for case-by-case decisions for, conducting inspections i think that is,what is mission critical for fda, excellent thank you very much how, effective, are these remote audits alton,so i think today there really isnt much,of a precedent for, doing them at all remotely so really, what were trying to do is establish a,dialogue around, how this might look and how we could how,we could pull this off, another component that weve talked, about in the past is,access to data and information and one, thing that industry can, continue to do is the digital, transformation conversion if more thing, was, things were in digital format if our, validation life cycle management systems, were digital,we would be able to pull information, much more quickly,so i think were talking about the, capabilities that would actually enable, this to happen, one of the important things in,inspection is that the fda,or whatever regulatory authority is in,is conducting an inspection is that they, understand, that theyre getting authentic data in,real time,or near real time so that they they, understand that they have a good sense,of whats going on in the site, and unless we have the data available, and connected,we arent going to be able to respond as,an industry as we would need to,respond so i think its its a concept, that could be developed quite rapidly,uh but i would say remote inspections, today are pretty much limited to,follow-ups from previous inspections, sure okay so and and you know its its, funny to hear you say that because i,mean that is kind of like the elephant,in the room right that we havent, really embraced the whole digital space, yet,um and theres some you know there are, some organizations that are very very, good at this and and theyve progressed, quite nicely,uh and they probably would do just fine,in,remote uh audits or inspection, situations and then, others who um you know im thinking, about as youre talking, just wouldnt be able to um get the data,to the uh regulators in a timely fashion,um so how have restrictions then ajaz,im gonna im gonna throw this back to,you i know you have,a lot of knowledge on fda,how have restrictions in conducting,pre-approval inspections um delayed, new product approval and commercial, launch,uh do you have a sense of that now and, what are the best and worst case, scenarios here, well i think uh for most of uh,2020 we did not see a significant impact, but uh perhaps because, many of the inspections were already, conducted and and,and there was no need for repeating the, inspection on on many occasions, but since perhaps november october, november december,we have seen significant delays in,approvals complete response letters, and and i think um what we have to keep,in mind,is the the pharmaceutical sector,is a very heterogeneous sector we have, perhaps about 3500 or so,facilities that supply medicines to u.s,and as as you noted some of them are, large major corporations which are far, advanced,uh are able to are advancing their, digitization, and and other aspects which i think are, relevant to,creating a inspectional uh environment, that fda would be comfortable with, but many a small, diverse companies distributed across but,the u.s supply is dependent on the, totality of all these suppliers, and i think that poses a significant, challenge that we face now, yeah no i would agree i would agree that, weve seen that as a,major factor throughout this entire, pandemic really the whole, supply chain and how do we get um,not only the drugs but the other the the, other, items that we need whether its glass, vials or ppe,for clean rooms etc um so that that, definitely,i would imagine would continue to be a,theme into 2021.,yes thank you so thinking about the, companies then, that are able um to participate,in virtual inspections uh if theyre in,preparing for a virtual inspection what, are these firms expected to provide, and how can they best prepare all um,that, they will need to um to submit, for review alton so so i think we,are pretty familiar with most most firms, are familiar, with what the typical questions like let,me see your investigations for the past,x period of time,or um your remedial actions or your, recalls,or and and those sorts of things so,having that, material available and readily available, those are pretty standard and those, could be provided, either with digital solutions as we,talked about before,or near real time viewing of paper, copies,i think the one thing that would be,really important to make an inspector, feel that theyre on site,is what about the tour they usually, start their inspection with the tour,so there are great camera technologies, today, and many firms use them internally, for troubleshooting or training,or all kinds of applications those could, easily,be redeployed to give that inspector,a real-time real-world view of whats, going on in the plan they could actually, witness, anything they could virtually by,pointing the camera in their in the, right direction, and of course you can augment that with, data and so forth, once you have the digital platform so i,think those two things the, digitalization which we talked about, earlier, but really having that eyes on through a,camera, could give an inspector that uh,understanding of whats really going on,in the site, sure and i love that that definitely, would make them feel a little bit more,at ease right to be able to see,and even in some instances during um,an inspection and uh steve i want to,have you jump in here because weve, talked about,a lot of different technologies in the, past you and i,um and i want to see get your opinion on,the various technologies that are out, there and see if there are some, that are better than others in,supporting virtual inspections and, audits,so good i was feeling left out there for,a minute just joking,um yes so what were doing right now, with zoom thats a technology that you, could use in an audit

怎麼寫期刊投稿Cover Letter

hi this is Kevin with word advice today, were going to be looking at how to,write a tight strong concise journal, submissions cover letter cover letters, can impact an editors decision to,review your study and ultimately decide, whether or not it gets published in a,journal this video will explain one why,you should care about writing a powerful, cover letter to what you should include,in the letter and three how exactly you,can structure it and were going to be,looking at a sample cover letter to give, you an idea of what the real thing looks, like why does a cover letter even matter, well your research papers role is to,prove the merits of your work a strong, introductory cover letter is the key to,getting your foot in the door it will, help you highlight the significance of,your study and give the editor a reason,to read further part of the,decision-making process about whether or,not to publish an article is based on a,business model and editors must, therefore accept articles that will, interest their readership so in your, cover letter is the one golden, opportunity to really convince these, editors that your work is worthy of,further review so lets talk about what, you should include in your cover letter, the most important thing to remember is,to follow your target journals guide for, authors no matter what other advice you, read online make sure you prioritize the, information requested by the editors, failure to include required statements, will lead to automatic rejection and, that is obviously something you want to,avoid here is a list of the most common, elements you must include in what, information you should not include, editors name when known the name of the, journal to what you are submitting the, title of your manuscript article type, whether its review research case study, etc the submission date which is usually, the same day as your cover letter is,sent a brief background of study and, research question a brief overview of,methodology that you used in the study, principle findings and significance to,the scientific community that is how, your research advances our understanding,of a concept corresponding information, about other authors involved in the, study and a prior and current publishing, status of your paper indicate that your, paper has not been previously published, and is not currently under consideration,by another journal and that all authors, involved have, proved of and have agreed to submit the, manuscript to this journal in addition,to these essential elements there is a,lot of other information that is,commonly requested to see this list in,greater detail visit word vice.com,and read the articles on the journal, cover letter here are some on our, resources here are some things you, should avoid when writing your cover, letter dont use too much jargon or,include too many acronyms be sure not to,over embellish your findings or their, significance avoid words such as novel,first-ever and paradigm these types of,statements show bias and well make the, editor question your ability to assess, your works merits objectively dont drop, names listing people who might endorse, your paper and discussing authors, reputations do not interest editors they, want to know if your content fits their, criteria so focus solely on addressing, that point dont write too much in the, letter the letter is only meant to be an,introduction in brief overview so,although you should adequately explain, your work and its significance keep the, cover letter to one page in length or,less always keep a professional tone and, dont try to be too entertaining, although a joke may lighten the mood, also has too much potential to go wrong,so now lets talk about how to structure, your cover letter overall you want to,use formal language when writing this, letter you should also be aware that, structure for emailed cover letters will, differ from those of PDF or hardcopy, you can find those formatting, differences on many websites including, our resources page so here is a sample,of the journal submissions cover letter,on the left hand side in green is the, sample we have composed on the right is,the information that you need to input, and here in the black is the template, language you can use when making your, own cover letter the first part of the, letter is the address and you must, include the graduate degree of the, person to whom you are sending the, letter the position at the journal the, name of the journal the journals address, and the submission date so lets look at,the sample Edith Warshaw PhD,editor-in-chief awesome science journal, the name of our hypothetical journal,Cincinnati Ohio 4 1 0 7 3 June 24 2016,now this date will generally be the date, that you send the letter if you are, submitting on this, same day in the salutation you should, keep it simple dear doctor Warshaw or,musa Warshaw but you should note that, you should not use terms such as mrs. or,sirs as those can be presumptuous of a,certain gender in the first paragraph, you will introduce your paper you should, include your paper title the title of,the journal to which you are submitting, the type of paper that you have written, and one to two sentences that pitch or,summarize the study design your research, question your major findings and the, conclusions that youve reached again on,the left-hand side in the black is your, template language so you can include, this regardless of the content of your, study I am writing to submit our, manuscript entitled x marks the spot for, consideration as a journal of education, research article a journalist of,education is the name of this journal, and the type of article is a research, article now in the section that follows, here its only a hypothetical of your, study but you can use this as an example, for what you might write about your own, study we examine the efficacy of using x,factors as indicators for depression and,why subjects in Z regions through a,12-month prospective cohort study and,can confirm that monitoring the levels,of X is critical to identifying the, onset of depression regardless of,geographical influences as you can see, here this is only one sentence but you,can write as many as one to two, sentences and briefly talk about the, conclusions that your study has reached,in the second paragraph you want to talk, about the purpose of your research and,the contribution that it will bring to,this journal that includes the context, that prompted your research the reader, profile that is the readers of this, particular journal the name of the, journal and you want to discuss the, achievements of previous literature that, inspired your study and the gaps in,knowledge that you are filling with this, study you also want to identify the, aspects of the journals aim and scope, that align with your paper that is the, journals readership and what the, articles of the journal aim to educate,as well as show further and broader use,of the work in this area of research so,as you can probably tell before you, submit your paper, you want to do a lot of research about, the journal – what you submitting so,that you know what the readership is and, what the aims of the journals are so,lets read our example here given that, there has been an alarming increase in,depression rates among teenagers coupled, with a lack of any uniform practical, test for screening students we believe, that the findings presented in our paper, will appeal to and this is the target, audience or readership education, policymakers who subscribe to the,Journal of education or your journal, although prior research has identified a,few methods that could be used in,depression screening such as X&Y the, applications developed from those, findings have been cost prohibitive and, difficult to administer on a national, level so the context that prompted your, research will probably differ wildly, from our example here thus our findings, will allow your if you, have something new to contribute to your, community publishing in a journal is a,way to ensure your findings which the, community and that the research is taken, seriously, once your research has published in a,credible journal you are demonstrating, that your work has gone through a peer, review peer review provides solidity, scrutiny and improves quality through, feedback getting published can also help, advance your career whether it,contributes to a promotion or helps you, secure tenure plus publishing with a,company like sage means you as an author, benefit from the highest production, standards once it is available online,and/or in print you then have additional, resources at your fingertips to help, with dissemination such as the article, available online included in,international sales packages assistance, with promotion and the option to publish, your article fully open access if,required by your institution or funder, your work may even influence policies or,patents in your field shaping society as,we know it today but millions of journal, articles are published each year we,suggest you ask yourself a few questions, before you even start your research who,is going to be interested how does your, research build on what we already know, how significant is your message how sure, are you of your findings is your work, novel and innovative does it fill a gap,or provide an extension of a theory, perhaps it shows conventional wisdom was, mistaken why are you wanting or needing,to publish your work what will it,contribute to your field at this point, during the webinar you are probably, ready to publish your work oftentimes, you spend months even years conducting, research and gathering data but the work, certainly does not stop there sometimes, writing the actual paper can be the most, daunting getting published as hard and, standards are high but there are a few, tips we can share that will help along, the way to ensure you succeed, first off ensure that your work is,original avoid splitting one experiment, into several papers what is called, salami slicing share the workload, consider are working with co-authors you,can allocate responsibilities and set, each other deadlines and so forth read, current journal articles in your field,of study, have you been thorough with your, literature review once you are ready to,sit down, pen to paper plan time to brainstorm, writing takes time and energy be sure to,take time to outline and organize your, manuscript ensure you have enough, material research and data, mind right for that journal once youve, completed your first draft resist the, temptation of submitting it as soon as,you have finished the paper let it,breathe for a while and come back to it,before submitting read reread and revise, and then ask a colleague to read it,sleep on it again then revise once more,go over it multiple times and make sure, all your key elements are there dont, submit incomplete work and expect the, journal editors or reviewers to do the,job of finishing the paper for you the, stage after gateway has a variety of,resources including links to,english-language editing service author, guidelines the importance of search, engines how to get the title rate a epic, use page and more these resources we,will not be covering in full today but,are incredibly helpful to reference when, you may need some extra guidance you, might even consider finding an,experienced writer to help you look to,others who have been published before, for guidance its important to think, about who you should name as an author, authorship consists of four criteria, authors made a substantial contribution,to the concept or a design of the work,or in the acquisition analysis or,interpretation of the data drafted the, article or revised instead for critical, revised it critically important, intellectual content will approve the, version to be published and participated, sufficiently in the work to take public, responsibility for appropriate portions,of the content are there others that, were involved that maybe dont meet all,of these criteria you can and should, list them in the acknowledgement section, its now time to consider which journal, you would like to submit to it is,crucial to do your homework at the core, you need to think about the best home, for your paper as you are exploring, journals think about what is the, journals reputation, what do your peers say about the journal, what type of papers does the journal, publish and what type of paper are you, publishing is an empirical research a,review paper, for port or book review does the journal, youre considering even publish these, kinds of papers does your article, reference publications that might be a,good fit for your research, does your paper fit within the aims and, scopes of a journal you are Iying, who is the editor who sits on the, editorial board are they highly cited in,your field how diverse is the editorial, board do you know someone who has, published in the journal already does, the journal state the current rejection, rate or a turnaround time but is the,peer-review policy is it single blind, double blind are the comments Leah Umansky Reads Two Poems from The Cincinnati Review

hi my name is Leah he-man ski and Im,really excited that I have two poems in,the new issue of the Cincinnati review I,want to thank the editors for their hard, work and their support of my work, theres two poems Im going to read, tonight and theyre from my new, manuscript of tyrants of tyrant is a,manuscript of political poems and its a,book that centers around mostly the, tyrant at large you might know who that, tyrant in power is right now its pretty, fitting but also about toxic masculinity, and really the different shapes of,personage that the tyrant takes the, tyrant could be someone you work with,it could be your boss it could be a,colleague it could be a friend it could,be a boyfriend it could be someone in,your family, unfortunately the tyrant is everywhere, and these two poems are very different,in terms of what theyre trying to do,for the reader in terms of uplifting, them and in terms of getting them to see,the ways that the tyrant works, unfortunately this is the tyrants play, grounds and the tyrant is having his fun, right now so here are my two poems God,is God in the universe as the universe, and maybe theyve had enough and maybe, the ship will finally sink and maybe the, controversy will be settled and maybe, the rendering will be palpable and maybe, the reckoning will be glorious and maybe, the divide will be bridged with glory, and maybe the flashes will be fragments, and maybe the center will not hold and, maybe the thrill of what follows will be,just that thrilling and maybe I will see, through the darkness and maybe I will, come before the remembering and see the, truth and maybe I will imagine the very, heart of this moment and not feel pain, and maybe I will make a case for, jealousy that it was mine all this time, and maybe I will see my limitations as a,mirror and search for a face and maybe I,will recognize the swallowing of,strengths and maybe I will have, intentions I didnt know I,had and maybe I will search the model I,hold for splinters and cracks and maybe,my predictions were wrong and maybe my,patients didnt then and maybe I will, have had enough and maybe I will erase, what has plagued me and maybe the, reckoning will be deafening, and maybe I will rise up and see with, these eyes that wants and these eyes, that holds and these eyes that carry and,hes eyes at cast and these eyes at,glare and maybe I will see these eyes, that this country is good that people, are good that people are mostly good and, that I knew the whole time that I was, good and this is the second poem tender,I think about the word tender and its, meanings he told me I was so tender, tender meaning easily to bruise meaning, soft to the touch, meaning perfection to taste meaning, juicy or close to bloody tender did he,mean tinder like when I saw him on,tinder like when I saw someone who might, have been posing as him on tinder or,like what starts a fire the way the wood, bulks the way it bleeds blue into orange, into yellow orange you glad I never, called you out about that doesnt the, wood girl warm and gentle soft like one, might say tender whats he saying I was, quick to burn maybe he was quick to burn, maybe I am quick to burn so what tender, feel so loving all those end sounds like, envelope and deer mint and ever and, circle and clothes and chant and twine, and thrall and gauge and end and and, thank you so much for listening
