C’Mon C’Mon Quietly Wonders About The Entire World | Movie Review

its rare for a quote-unquote adult film,to genuinely value the perspective of,young children but thats exactly what, mike millss sensational command come on,does in it joaquin phoenix plays johnny,a radio journalist interviewing young, people throughout various u.s cities, asking a broad question what do you, think the future is going to be like, even if that premise initially feels a,little too convenient it turns into, something deeply affecting to visit, planet earth, you will have to be born as a human, child i get a hug at first youll have,to learn to use your new body,to move your arms and legs, you will learn to walk, and run film shot entirely in black and, white and mostly on location hops from, detroit to los angeles to new york and, finally to new orleans each time, stopping to really make a meal out of,each city and personalities of the young, minds living within them as johnny puts,it he enters and exits the lives that, his subjects keep living leaving behind, their situations as he builds upon his,own but his situation changes when his, estranged sister asks him to take her,son woody normans jessie with him while, she tries to take care of jesses,drug-addled father suddenly johnny finds, out that while he remains an observer in,his work he is helping create the, situation of jesses young life a,situation that is every bit as complex, challenging and unique as those of his, subjects the film doesnt play upon the, irony of a child imposing on work that, involves getting children to say, profound things about the world and life,to an annoying degree while one may roll, their eyes at the initial thematic, obviousness of mills premise the writer, directors approach and intent feel, completely honest that said while johnny, and jesses relationship is rich and, utterly human come on come on more, quietly has the state of the world on,its mind the movie feels specifically, targeted at those old enough to listen,to and reflect on what jessie and the, other children say from a place of,melancholic complacency an inherently, adult emotional state of mind even as,the film harnesses the pure unfiltered, perspective of americas youth were, clearly here to observe what that does,to middle age johnny this is a man who, interacts with children for his, occupation but doesnt have any kids, himself to call him a hack would be,harsh but not totally off base even if,he understands the value of his work his, approach is more transactional than it,is empathetic and that is where a,temperamental 10 year old gets to double,as an unpredictable battering ram into, his existence for the film to work, phoenix and normans chemistry needs to,be pitch perfect and it is here the, joker actor is totally against type, playing a normal schlubby awkward figure, you could pass on the street and never, even notice norman meanwhile gives a,revelatory performance for a child actor, together they make magic perfectly, exhibiting the terrifying uncharted, waters both their characters find, themselves in we see fear in their eyes, often but joy creeps in there more and, more as they forcibly get acclimated, with their uncomfortable situation as,jessie isnt one of johnnys interview, subjects theyre merely part of each, others every day jesses occasional, tantrums dont seem to carry the same, weight as what the kids johnny meats, just once say into his microphone what, this unlikely pair is experiencing is,simply life the impacts both small and, large that we leave on people close to,us enriching hurting and loving each, other saying it and writing it is more, cliche than the truth of just living it,but for this beautiful exploration of,generational perspective merely living,it is more than enough, maybe we can just take this process, slowly and see see how it feels you are, just, terrible at this oh man im trying, writer director mike mills gets the very, best from joaquin phoenix by pairing him, with the young woody norman their, perfect chemistry enlivens this quiet, road drama about the perspectives of our, youth with emotionality that wont leave,a dry eye in the house, damn this book, youre crying no im not yes you are, youre definitely crap say youre crying

come on come on which is the latest from, mike mills you interviewed who did you, interview for 20th century women did you, interview, somebody for that film,i thought you did but i may be wrong, anyway thumbsucker beginners 20th,century woman so,this starts whacking phoenix and gabby, hoffman who are brother and sister, johnny and viv they are, somewhat estranged after the death of,their mother annette benning is the, answer benning was who you are thank you, very much i remembered that you had, interviewed somebody and that was who it,was thank you very much anyway, she has a challenging son jesse and her, husband who is struggling with mental, health issues,he is a radio journalist who is working,on a project in which hes interviewing, kids about their lives in america and, about what they think of their lives and, whether adults listen to them and what, they think of the future, hes broken up with his partner so hes, single and hes now doing this project, she has to go away to tend to her, partner and she says johnny look can you, step in and help, and he doesnt want to but he does so,and he finds himself confronted with, its like the mumble core version of the,kid from uncle buck you remember that, with john candy and um macaulay culkin, and macaulay culkin asks a whole ton of,questions and, bungabot says you ask a lot of questions,he says im a kid its my job,so,this kid is very you know constantly, constantly asking constantly questioning, and has,a whole load of uh sort of role-playing,things that he does with his mom which,he imagines that hes an orphan he,imagines a hormone shes very good at,playing these games johnny is not so,good at it he tries to interview child, child then turns everything around and, interviews him back heres a clip, why are you alone,i mean who cares blah blah blah this, thing, yeah exactly who cares, did you tell my mom to leave my dad when,he first got sick, did you,i told her to take care of herself, blah, blah blah no its not black blah blah no,its not,it is,so you said i mean about the kind of,slightly mumble core feeling about it,its a very, gentle film, what happens is,he then,[Music],as they start out very awkwardly but as,you can imagine they start to form a,bond that this kind of chalk and cheese, relationship and they start to form a,bond he then needs to go to new york, and so he asked jesse if jesse would, come with him and just mum says what do,you mean take him to new york she said, well you know i need to do this she said, okay fine so then they go to new york, and in fact they then move on to other, places but a large section of the film, does take place in new york its shot in,black and white its shot by robbie ryan, and something about the black and white, cinematography and the shots of them, walking around new york just talking, about everything and nothing reminded me,of manhattan and that similar kind of,just sort of slightly gently musing, breezy sort of like his manhattan was, shot by gordon willis wasnt it,and, they walk under the l train you know on,the elevated train and as they walk, theyre having these conversations which, sort of slip, between profundity and absurdity,on a couple of occasions he loses sight,of the kid very you know very briefly, but he loses side to the kid and, suddenly realizes the great weight,of being a parent so theres a whole, thing about the fact that essentially, theyre both children, and during the course of their, relationship the,he realizes what it means to be a parent, and the child realizes what its like to,have this friendship with his uncle, and, its odd because, its, its very you know whats that phrase, you used about a film just really said,it was less than the sum of its parts, this is more than the sum of its parts, the individual elements feel very, incidental and very uh,you know, almost accidental, and yet the cumulative weight of them, starts to approach something that felt, quietly profound now,im not entirely sure whether thats, just something to do with an atmosphere,of the film or whether it actually is,quite ive only seen it the once its,got a wonderful soundtrack um aaron, bryce does not do the original music and, then it does things like it uses, the piano playing of emma hoytseiki, marion gabriel whose work was all over, that documentary time which is wonderful, and this also theyve got the the san, francisco saxophone quartet player, version of claire de lune, okay and none of this sounds like it,should work, but somehow it does and somehow what you,get is this kind of mosaic-like portrait,of a brother and a sister who are, estranged because of the loss of their, mother a mother and a child, who are slightly estranged but because, this uncle moves into place starts to,reform a bond, you know a man and a woman one of whom,is suffering from mental health crisis, the other of whom is reaching out to him, with, all these things are going on at the, same time its very understated i mean, bear in mind that wacky in phoenix you, know recently hugely fated for joker, which was a you know it was a big, performance its a big turn up to you, know the thing about walking down the, steps and doing all that stuff this is,like completely the opposite and it it,did seem to me that if you were wacky in,phoenix this is exactly the thing you, would do after joker after its like, completely the polar opposite i was, rather charmed by it i it felt very, gentle and oddly moving every now and, then it touched on things that that, struck a nerve but i say its like it is,more than the sum of its parts

Cmon Cmon means so much to me- a video essay (no spoilers dont worry)

[Music],movies are kind of my favorite thing in,the world, obviously ive mentioned several times,in my videos that i want to write and, direct my own stuff, but the easiest part about it is just, knowing what kind of movies i would want,to make,im a guy who gets inspired easily my,passion always runs wild and of course i,cant just duplicate whats already been, done before, but i always sit there after the movie,is finished and i think thats it,thats the kind of thing i want to make, and no filmmaker has ever made me do,that more than mike mills, mike mills is my second favorite, director with every one of my favorite, directors im always entranced by how, their signature style is going to play, out this time, with mike mills his signature style is,just capturing the wholesomeness of,everyday life, every single film hes made has been a,love letter to something of sorts and i,always walk out feeling spoken to i had,the opportunity to see him speak at the,new york film festival and sadly i,wasnt allowed to talk to him shake his, hand and tell him how much his films, mean to me,but just hearing him speak with his, calming yet passionate voice was enough, for me to be satisfied his new film is,called come on come on,which follows the story of johnny who is,a radio journalist who takes a trip, across the country with his nephew, interviewing kids and its not only my,favorite movie of the year its getting, pretty high up on my favorite movies of,all time list ive seen it twice now,the moment it ended when i was at the,new york film festival i had a really, nice cry,a cry that i didnt know that i needed, but felt so good and warming it had been,a while since ive been this moved by a,movie, moved in a sense where i couldnt, believe the wholesomeness i was, experiencing but it never felt forced, upon,it was the kind of move to where i loved, what this movie made me feel, from frame one to the last i was, entranced and by the end like i said,i was in tears, not sad tears, but tears of pure wholesomeness, what come on come on does thats so,special for me is that it continues that, cycle of mike mills films of how, beautiful normal life can be,but he never forces it onto you his, movies are always showing you the beauty,of normal life whether its a reflection,of his life or not but in come on come,on theres a bit of a darker perspective, though the beauty and wholesomeness is,still there front and center, the film as a whole is about adult child, relationships and how younger people, have impacted everyday life in the best, possible way,but where the darkness comes in is what, goes on behind the scenes, every character isnt really there, emotionally,i wont spoil how that is but the point,i was trying to get at is that that dark, nature becomes uplifting when everyone, reminds each other of the love they, share for each other and its in such a,way that feels incredibly satisfying, theres always something so amazing, knowing that someone is there for you, even when you feel no one is,and here its understood to the highest, degree especially in this day and age, that kind of thing is what people need,to hear and how come on come on presents,it isnt in a way where it feels like, theyve heard it all before in fact its, pretty much presented in a way where, every character here has such a,different viewpoint on the world but, mills takes the time to develop each, character in their point of view and, earn their emotional impact this might, sound a little cliche but i found myself, relating to so much of this movie, these characters have said things that i,have said before or wanted to say these, characters have dealt with situations, that ive been through so for that it,was so easy for me to connect it was so,easy for me to fall in love but what i,also fell in love with was the black and, white cinematography the black and white, didnt feel gimmicky like most films, what i saw felt like a pencil sketch it,added so much innocence and grace to the, story of the film to a point where i,couldnt look away even though the film, was in black and white the entire thing, felt highlighted, like it was giving color and beauty to,the littlest things, even if that color had drained out of,these characters lives,so really what better way than to make,it feel like a pencil sketch rather than,a painting, you can still give it some kind of,connection you can still give it emotion, and mostly you can still give it heart, the heart has to be somewhere and its, clear that mike mills knew exactly where,to put it if i had to describe it more,it feels nostalgic in the most, comforting way,i could look at this movie for hours and, still tear up but most of all come on,come on feels like a movie that i needed,i connected these characters on a,spiritual level especially at the time, that i saw this, the reason why this means so much to me,is because it gave me a substantial, amount of hope, but it also helped me realize one thing,if something doesnt feel right or,youre going through a rough patch its, okay to not feel okay, the world isnt fair but its not meant,to be,you dont have to focus on the world, when you can focus on life, the world might present itself as ugly, but life is so goddamn beautiful, look at all this life around you, theres so much to experience and even,if you still feel that hopelessness, inside you thats okay too, because one day youll find it it takes, time but i believe youll find it but,for now its okay to not be okay come on,come on pulled my eyelids open and i,feel like i can finally see again with, this new vision of life just watching an,uncle and nephew go on a road trip, across the united states,i felt like i was being invited to try,out a new perspective,of this truly beautiful life, you

Cmon Cmon (2021) Movie Review

i didnt really know what to expect from, this a24 drama come on come on has been,in very limited release in theaters but,its now available on vod so is it worth, checking out,[Music],when a sister asks him to look after her,son a radio journalist embarks on a,cross-country trip with his energetic, nephew to show him life away from los, angeles joaquin phoenix stars in this, quiet and patient story about grief, friendship emotions and our view of the, world phoenix plays johnny and we follow, him as he goes to watch over his nephew, jessie while jesses mom goes to care, for her husband this is presented in,black and white which is beautiful in,its darkness the aesthetic really helps,to add dimension to the storytelling by,making the visuals simple but still, wildly engaging the contrast isnt so,stark that all of the whites are blown, out and the blacks are just crushed to,these indiscernible levels but instead,we get a lot of variations within the, gray tones the reason i like that so,much beyond i mean just how gorgeous it,is to look at is that the lack of,colorful stimulus allows me to focus, more intently on the performances and in,this i mean its driven so dominantly by,those performances and not only do we,have phoenix taking the lead but he,shares most of the screen time with, woody norman who plays jesse and this, kid is awesome i mean hes inquisitive a,complete ball of just non-stop energy, hes also quite quirky the dynamic he,shares with phoenix is captivating tense, then funny and even sad and they share,so many different emotional moments, throughout the course of this story and, then the progression our characters, experience is touching and i think it,might make you tear up each is going, through their own journey of healing but,in completely different ways and thats, what helped to make this so appealing, they each get closer and closer to,acceptance of their emotional state as,the story goes along and i really loved, how they both arrive in similar spots, each helped along by the other now as,part of the storytelling device, phoenixs character visits a few places,to interview kids about their outlook of,the future their surroundings and even, their hopes and dreams something that i,found to be really cool is that the kids, that are being interviewed theyre not, actors but theyre real kids answering, the questions in their own unscripted, words these are then interspersed, throughout the story to reinforce themes, and hit during key emotional beats gabby, hoffman plays jessies mom and johnnys, sister viv and i love what she brought,to the story she has two distinctly, different dynamics that closely resemble, each other i mean her dynamic with her, brother is sometimes contentious and,guilt-ridden but then also sweet and, compassionate at other times they have a,few different kinds of family drama that, they navigate some easier to overcome, than others but one feeds into the other, and then her interactions with jesse are, surprisingly mature and adult for just, how young jesse is but not all of their, conversations are adult i mean some are, very silly and immature and all of them, though help to point to a kid whos, having a not too easy time connecting, just with the world around him the, emotional journeys that both jessie and, johnny make in this is wonderful to,watch especially as it culminates in,this one scene in a wooded area of new, orleans the dialogue is simple and even, humorous but its also extremely weighty, all throughout the film we get these, quiet scenes of phoenixs johnny, listening to recorded audio or even, recording his own thoughts for his radio, production the restraint that he shows, within these really helped to draw me,into his character hes incredibly, sympathetic even though many of these, sequences just dont ask for us to feel, sorry for him or even simply connect, with what hes doing but i still found, myself being drawn into the character as,i listen to him speak and watch just the, subtle emotion in his eyes i couldnt, help but be enamored with the character, hes gentle soft-spoken most of the time, and hes even got a quirkiness to him, that i found very endearing the movie is,just under two hours at an hour and 49,minutes and its patiently told but at,no point did i find it slow or boring, now i do believe that if youre not, connecting with the characters or in a,mindset to watch something thats, quieter like this it will feel like its, dragging and possibly make it even seem, pointless but i dont believe its, pointless at all the character journeys, and growth are exceptional making me,never want to move my eyes away from the, screen and the cinematography in this is,stunning there are some shots where the, camera is completely locked down and, then our subjects move into frame and, then into focus but they can also move, out of frame without the camera, following and while this wasnt done a,lot of the time it was a great effect to,illustrate movement and then show, transients the shots also alternate, between some extreme wide shots to show, the subjects within the scale of the, surrounding setting and then in one, scene where jesse is listening to just, this audio through johnnys microphone, when theyre in new york hes walking, around this parking lot and around, subways and stuff we get to see just how, tiny jesse is as he wanders around the, scenery around him but there are also, some very powerful intimate shots that, allow us to connect with the emotion, held within the actors eyes and i left, how each framing seemed to support and, even create the appropriate emotion of a,particular scene so overall come on come,on is a moving and powerful character, journey showing that we dont need, flashy or big characters to illustrate, effective character growth the actors, have wonderful charisma creating, performances that are captivating within,a patient emotional narrative the, cinematography is made all the more, beautiful by the choice to present this,in black and white and the use of actual, interviews i think is a powerful, storytelling device that complements and, enhances the themes of grief friendship, and hope this also showcases how, talented of an actor joaquin phoenix is,and how he continues to choose roles, that resonate and connect with audiences,in meaningful ways i absolutely adored, this film and all that went into making,it theres no sex or nudity some, profanity and not really any violence i,give come on come on five out of five, couches whats a good character story, that you enjoy let me know in the, comments below if you enjoyed this, review please give it a like also dont, forget to share and subscribe im chris, this is movies and munchies thanks for, couching with me,come on come on come on come on come on,come on,come on come on,come on How Joaquin Phoenix Handles Parenting in ‘C’mon C’mon’| Anatomy of a Scene

“Hello, everyone.,My name is Mike Mills, and I’m the writer/director of C’mon,C’mon.,So this scene’s between Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Johnny,,who is an uncle to a kid named Jesse,,who’s played by Woody Norman.,He has never had kids himself.,And so in this film, he’s thrown into being the sole, caretaker of this kid for a while,,and has to learn parenting very quickly.,And in this scene, they just came from their first night,in New York City, and the kid outsmarted him and ate,a ton of sugar during dinner.,And they’ve come home, and he’s trying to just get him,to go to bed, which is impossible.,So in a way, it’s almost like a romantic comedy, the story.,Like, they meet.,They have almost, like, a meet-cute, right?,And the love affair starts.,And this is where the love affair starts,to have complications, and harder layers, start to work in.,I wanted to show a scene that seems inconsequential.,Like, the kid lied to me about their toothbrushing,,the kid ate more sugar than they know how to handle,,the kid won’t go to sleep, the kid won’t stay in their bed,,the kid keeps coming into my bed, right?”,“Are you O.K.?”,“My friends don’t talk with me,,because I don’t really have friends.,I mostly hang out with adults.”,“No.,Jesse, no.,Back to bed.”,“I think all parents will really relate to that.,And that happens a lot.,But then the kind of deeper level that happens is maybe, because of the kid’s exhaustion or exhilaration, from the sugar, starts asking all these kind of really, intense questions about his mom, who, obviously,,the Johnny character knows in a different way,,because it’s his sister, right?,And they start to get into, like, these heavier layers,,more complicated layers of their relationship.,That’s what I was trying to get to.”,“Can you tell me about mom when she was a little girl?”,“I said she was cute.,He said–”,“I heard about her boyfriends.,And she ran away, and she got in trouble all the time.,And I heard that she got an abortion.”,“And this thing that often happens to me as a parent–,you’re trying to share something intense, and complicated with your kid, and you just feel like you’ve,failed.,You just feel like you did not do a good job of showing up,or articulating something.”,“You know, a woman’s body is–,like, I mean, every person–,you have the right of your own body.,And a woman certainly has the right–,like, it’s called the right to choose.”,“And actually, this young little person has judo, flipped you in, like, three different ways,,and you’re just sort of knocked out by the end.,So I wanted to show that feeling of, like,,being just stretched beyond what you know how to do.”,”Rest your legs.”,Rest your hands.”,“There’s another really cool part to this.,So that’s intercut with Joaquin talking into the mic,,right?,He’s doing kind of–,he’s a radio journalist, and he’s doing his diary,,or something like that.,He’s trying to remember things,,and he’s just discussing this night, which we’re seeing.,So the scene kind of plays out in two different times,,right?,When you see him doing that part of the scene where he’s,talking in the microphone, we shot that a day or two, afterwards.,And he’s actually remembering, and sometimes doing something, that I wrote, but often, just, like,,his memory of what that scene was like.”

Cmon Cmon – Movie Review

good evening its the oscar expert here, with brother bro its time to review, come on come on this is an upcoming film, from director mike mills who did, beginners and 20th century women the, film follows walking phoenix who takes, care of his nephew after his family is,going through some challenging times if,youve seen any mike mills films you, know what youre getting into it has a,very like new york noah bombach dialogue, heavy naturalistic style joaquin phoenix, does a brilliant job out of completely, blending into this film to the point, where you dont even see him anymore you, dont see an actor in the same way that, with francis mcdormand and nomad land, you didnt see a celebrity theyre gonna,be people who are like oh its just, joaquin phoenix like playing himself but, like youre saying whats impressive is,how remarkable he disappears and just, blends into what the movie needs him to,be and this is his first role sims joker, and it could not be more different if,anybody was kind of lost by like, how wacky he was in that movie you are, going to be pulled right back in i,wouldnt put it as hes playing himself, hes playing in the moment the entire, time no i agree hes not im saying, people would accuse that but i dont, like that i hate that accusation because,it just takes away like the essence of,what acting is i think there are three, performances in here that are just, absolutely excellent of course one is,joaquin phoenix who is just brilliantly, settled throughout and then you have, gabby hoffman who plays his sister and, gabby hoffman surprised me a lot because, she was really good in this and she, brought a lot of personality and humor, here her character is definitely more, supporting but its a one that you can, really connect with and actually you can, come away with this film seeing her, perspective very well and she gives this, really honest portrayal of what a mother,is thats really central to the film and, then theres woody norman who plays the, child in this film and hes, incredible hes as good as joaquin, phoenix let me reiterate he is,as good the first scene when he became, very vulnerable and i just felt like oh,my god like thats a child that was the, moment when i was like locked into the, film hes an absolute wonder like i,actually dont know how this happened, its so rare to get performances that, feel so authentic for actors in this age, range i think hes probably around 10,years old playing this part and this, character is written just so,intelligently like i think mike mills, approach to writing was really to ask, himself like what is the intention of,this character like within every scene, and of course it seems standard but, writing children a lot of times theyll, just be like daddy why do adults fight, sometimes or theyll just like ask, questions and theyll say things kind of,mechanically mike mills was really, treating this character with a lot of,intelligence and integrity and also the, level of trust you can tell he has with, joaquin phoenix i dont know what in,prep they did to find that or if theyre, both just extremely well trained for the, screen and like how to look like youre, relating with one another the listening,on part of joaquin phoenix and woody, norman is incredible every scene they, were in was captivating the essence of,this film is the relationship between, these two characters and its so,heartwarming charming funny every, emotion that you would go through as a,parent you feel in like the scenes that, take place between these two characters, there are a lot of things you could take, away from this film but one of them that, stood out to me was this is really about, parenting in possibly the most honest, way ive seen were probably more, familiar with the joys that youre, supposed to have with parenting but i,think whats more hidden is like the, absolute stress and drain that it is on,you as like a self and a person and this, film captured that really well yeah it,made you understand why an adult might, like scream at their kid in public and,how that does not make them a bad person,at all i agree it was one of the most, authentic portrayals of parenthood i do,say that as someone who is not a parent, but this is also a film thats not even, about a parent its just about someone, whos learning to parent for the first, time in their life and really this is,just one of those movies thats about, like human connection its about what, these two characters take away from each, other and youll be surprised i think at,how much it really is about the younger, character in this situation like giving, and teaching to the adult thats, actually one of the things that makes, this film really special there are a lot,of ideas in here that the film is sort,of touching on i think a lot of,audiences will have different takeaways, about which idea kind of came across the, strongest like how we deal with incoming, generations especially now when theyre, inheriting a planet thats not even in,great condition and it sort of asks like, what keeps humanity optimistic and how,do we keep moving forward i actually, felt like that thread is more about how,do we listen to people whose, perspectives we dont necessarily, understand my biggest takeaway was that, this film is about how messy life is and,how at any stage youre actually more, confused the older you get when you, think that you actually know it all when, youre about like a teenager and then, the later life goes on the more confused, you are the more questions you have it,just tapped into something that i feel,is very true about life and it was so,honest about it,and it did not present answers for how,to deal with messiness except that we,have no choice but to,move forward and deal with it and rely,on each other i think and in those, relationships thats where we can find, optimism and beauty i think mike mills, has a very loving perspective of the, world he definitely tries to see it,honestly and for what it is and for all,its flaws but i think theres just an,appreciation for like the little moments, that make up your life that i just dont, think its called optimism i would call, that like it makes you feel appreciative, for, how life is and just like the the puzzle, that were all like sort of playing with,i would call it optimism though like it,definitely made me appreciate life, because it was like oh you can make a,work of art thats just about like how, life is so hard to understand and how as,an adult a child has just as much to,teach you as you have to teach them you, know the writing is strong when you can,see every perspective in the film i felt, like i understood it so deeply i even, understood like the child and where he,was coming from so deeply that like this, film really touched me like when we,think of dialogue we usually think of,like aaron sorkin or tarantino where, everything that comes out of a,characters mouth is like a well thought, out full and complete witty sentence the, approach that mike mills has here is,hes just trying to make people sound, like they do and the dialogue is much, more messy but to be able to craft messy, dialogue that feels real is a skill that, very few screenwriters have i think hes, like on noah bombachs level, with being able to do that and its just,a gift to watch these performers work, with that dialogue i just found this to,be such an easy movie to sink into and, connect with the dialogue and the, characters and the performances felt, incredibly authentic i think some people, also have pacing issues even i thought, the first act felt like applauded a,little bit too slowly like i didnt know, where it was going but once you settle, into the relationship between joaquin, phoenix and woody norman theres nothing, left to be desired it was just a,beautiful mosaic about life i think that, joaquin phoenix woody norman and gabby, hoffman are all kind of academy award, nomination worthy i feel like less, people probably say that about gabby, hoffman but i really think she was, amazing C’Mon C’Mon Quietly Wonders About The Entire World | Movie Review

its rare for a quote-unquote adult film,to genuinely value the perspective of,young children but thats exactly what, mike millss sensational command come on,does in it joaquin phoenix plays johnny,a radio journalist interviewing young, people throughout various u.s cities, asking a broad question what do you, think the future is going to be like, even if that premise initially feels a,little too convenient it turns into, something deeply affecting to visit, planet earth, you will have to be born as a human, child i get a hug at first youll have,to learn to use your new body,to move your arms and legs, you will learn to walk, and run film shot entirely in black and, white and mostly on location hops from, detroit to los angeles to new york and, finally to new orleans each time, stopping to really make a meal out of,each city and personalities of the young, minds living within them as johnny puts,it he enters and exits the lives that, his subjects keep living leaving behind, their situations as he builds upon his,own but his situation changes when his, estranged sister asks him to take her,son woody normans jessie with him while, she tries to take care of jesses,drug-addled father suddenly johnny finds, out that while he remains an observer in,his work he is helping create the, situation of jesses young life a,situation that is every bit as complex, challenging and unique as those of his, subjects the film doesnt play upon the, irony of a child imposing on work that, involves getting children to say, profound things about the world and life,to an annoying degree while one may roll, their eyes at the initial thematic, obviousness of mills premise the writer, directors approach and intent feel, completely honest that said while johnny, and jesses relationship is rich and, utterly human come on come on more, quietly has the state of the world on,its mind the movie feels specifically, targeted at those old enough to listen,to and reflect on what jessie and the, other children say from a place of,melancholic complacency an inherently, adult emotional state of mind even as,the film harnesses the pure unfiltered, perspective of americas youth were, clearly here to observe what that does,to middle age johnny this is a man who, interacts with children for his, occupation but doesnt have any kids, himself to call him a hack would be,harsh but not totally off base even if,he understands the value of his work his, approach is more transactional than it,is empathetic and that is where a,temperamental 10 year old gets to double,as an unpredictable battering ram into, his existence for the film to work, phoenix and normans chemistry needs to,be pitch perfect and it is here the, joker actor is totally against type, playing a normal schlubby awkward figure, you could pass on the street and never, even notice norman meanwhile gives a,revelatory performance for a child actor, together they make magic perfectly, exhibiting the terrifying uncharted, waters both their characters find, themselves in we see fear in their eyes, often but joy creeps in there more and, more as they forcibly get acclimated, with their uncomfortable situation as,jessie isnt one of johnnys interview, subjects theyre merely part of each, others every day jesses occasional, tantrums dont seem to carry the same, weight as what the kids johnny meats, just once say into his microphone what, this unlikely pair is experiencing is,simply life the impacts both small and, large that we leave on people close to,us enriching hurting and loving each, other saying it and writing it is more, cliche than the truth of just living it,but for this beautiful exploration of,generational perspective merely living,it is more than enough, maybe we can just take this process, slowly and see see how it feels you are, just, terrible at this oh man im trying, writer director mike mills gets the very, best from joaquin phoenix by pairing him, with the young woody norman their, perfect chemistry enlivens this quiet, road drama about the perspectives of our, youth with emotionality that wont leave,a dry eye in the house, damn this book, youre crying no im not yes you are, youre definitely crap say youre crying

come on come on which is the latest from, mike mills you interviewed who did you, interview for 20th century women did you, interview, somebody for that film,i thought you did but i may be wrong, anyway thumbsucker beginners 20th,century woman so,this starts whacking phoenix and gabby, hoffman who are brother and sister, johnny and viv they are, somewhat estranged after the death of,their mother annette benning is the, answer benning was who you are thank you, very much i remembered that you had, interviewed somebody and that was who it,was thank you very much anyway, she has a challenging son jesse and her, husband who is struggling with mental, health issues,he is a radio journalist who is working,on a project in which hes interviewing, kids about their lives in america and, about what they think of their lives and, whether adults listen to them and what, they think of the future, hes broken up with his partner so hes, single and hes now doing this project, she has to go away to tend to her, partner and she says johnny look can you, step in and help, and he doesnt want to but he does so,and he finds himself confronted with, its like the mumble core version of the,kid from uncle buck you remember that, with john candy and um macaulay culkin, and macaulay culkin asks a whole ton of,questions and, bungabot says you ask a lot of questions,he says im a kid its my job,so,this kid is very you know constantly, constantly asking constantly questioning, and has,a whole load of uh sort of role-playing,things that he does with his mom which,he imagines that hes an orphan he,imagines a hormone shes very good at,playing these games johnny is not so,good at it he tries to interview child, child then turns everything around and, interviews him back heres a clip, why are you alone,i mean who cares blah blah blah this, thing, yeah exactly who cares, did you tell my mom to leave my dad when,he first got sick, did you,i told her to take care of herself, blah, blah blah no its not black blah blah no,its not,it is,so you said i mean about the kind of,slightly mumble core feeling about it,its a very, gentle film, what happens is,he then,[Music],as they start out very awkwardly but as,you can imagine they start to form a,bond that this kind of chalk and cheese, relationship and they start to form a,bond he then needs to go to new york, and so he asked jesse if jesse would, come with him and just mum says what do,you mean take him to new york she said, well you know i need to do this she said, okay fine so then they go to new york, and in fact they then move on to other, places but a large section of the film, does take place in new york its shot in,black and white its shot by robbie ryan, and something about the black and white, cinematography and the shots of them, walking around new york just talking, about everything and nothing reminded me,of manhattan and that similar kind of,just sort of slightly gently musing, breezy sort of like his manhattan was, shot by gordon willis wasnt it,and, they walk under the l train you know on,the elevated train and as they walk, theyre having these conversations which, sort of slip, between profundity and absurdity,on a couple of occasions he loses sight,of the kid very you know very briefly, but he loses side to the kid and, suddenly realizes the great weight,of being a parent so theres a whole, thing about the fact that essentially, theyre both children, and during the course of their, relationship the,he realizes what it means to be a parent, and the child realizes what its like to,have this friendship with his uncle, and, its odd because, its, its very you know whats that phrase, you used about a film just really said,it was less than the sum of its parts, this is more than the sum of its parts, the individual elements feel very, incidental and very uh,you know, almost accidental, and yet the cumulative weight of them, starts to approach something that felt, quietly profound now,im not entirely sure whether thats, just something to do with an atmosphere,of the film or whether it actually is,quite ive only seen it the once its,got a wonderful soundtrack um aaron, bryce does not do the original music and, then it does things like it uses, the piano playing of emma hoytseiki, marion gabriel whose work was all over, that documentary time which is wonderful, and this also theyve got the the san, francisco saxophone quartet player, version of claire de lune, okay and none of this sounds like it,should work, but somehow it does and somehow what you,get is this kind of mosaic-like portrait,of a brother and a sister who are, estranged because of the loss of their, mother a mother and a child, who are slightly estranged but because, this uncle moves into place starts to,reform a bond, you know a man and a woman one of whom,is suffering from mental health crisis, the other of whom is reaching out to him, with, all these things are going on at the, same time its very understated i mean, bear in mind that wacky in phoenix you, know recently hugely fated for joker, which was a you know it was a big, performance its a big turn up to you, know the thing about walking down the, steps and doing all that stuff this is,like completely the opposite and it it,did seem to me that if you were wacky in,phoenix this is exactly the thing you, would do after joker after its like, completely the polar opposite i was, rather charmed by it i it felt very, gentle and oddly moving every now and, then it touched on things that that, struck a nerve but i say its like it is,more than the sum of its parts

Cmon Cmon (2021) Movie Review

i didnt really know what to expect from, this a24 drama come on come on has been,in very limited release in theaters but,its now available on vod so is it worth, checking out,[Music],when a sister asks him to look after her,son a radio journalist embarks on a,cross-country trip with his energetic, nephew to show him life away from los, angeles joaquin phoenix stars in this, quiet and patient story about grief, friendship emotions and our view of the, world phoenix plays johnny and we follow, him as he goes to watch over his nephew, jessie while jesses mom goes to care, for her husband this is presented in,black and white which is beautiful in,its darkness the aesthetic really helps,to add dimension to the storytelling by,making the visuals simple but still, wildly engaging the contrast isnt so,stark that all of the whites are blown, out and the blacks are just crushed to,these indiscernible levels but instead,we get a lot of variations within the, gray tones the reason i like that so,much beyond i mean just how gorgeous it,is to look at is that the lack of,colorful stimulus allows me to focus, more intently on the performances and in,this i mean its driven so dominantly by,those performances and not only do we,have phoenix taking the lead but he,shares most of the screen time with, woody norman who plays jesse and this, kid is awesome i mean hes inquisitive a,complete ball of just non-stop energy, hes also quite quirky the dynamic he,shares with phoenix is captivating tense, then funny and even sad and they share,so many different emotional moments, throughout the course of this story and, then the progression our characters, experience is touching and i think it,might make you tear up each is going, through their own journey of healing but,in completely different ways and thats, what helped to make this so appealing, they each get closer and closer to,acceptance of their emotional state as,the story goes along and i really loved, how they both arrive in similar spots, each helped along by the other now as,part of the storytelling device, phoenixs character visits a few places,to interview kids about their outlook of,the future their surroundings and even, their hopes and dreams something that i,found to be really cool is that the kids, that are being interviewed theyre not, actors but theyre real kids answering, the questions in their own unscripted, words these are then interspersed, throughout the story to reinforce themes, and hit during key emotional beats gabby, hoffman plays jessies mom and johnnys, sister viv and i love what she brought,to the story she has two distinctly, different dynamics that closely resemble, each other i mean her dynamic with her, brother is sometimes contentious and,guilt-ridden but then also sweet and, compassionate at other times they have a,few different kinds of family drama that, they navigate some easier to overcome, than others but one feeds into the other, and then her interactions with jesse are, surprisingly mature and adult for just, how young jesse is but not all of their, conversations are adult i mean some are, very silly and immature and all of them, though help to point to a kid whos, having a not too easy time connecting, just with the world around him the, emotional journeys that both jessie and, johnny make in this is wonderful to,watch especially as it culminates in,this one scene in a wooded area of new, orleans the dialogue is simple and even, humorous but its also extremely weighty, all throughout the film we get these, quiet scenes of phoenixs johnny, listening to recorded audio or even, recording his own thoughts for his radio, production the restraint that he shows, within these really helped to draw me,into his character hes incredibly, sympathetic even though many of these, sequences just dont ask for us to feel, sorry for him or even simply connect, with what hes doing but i still found, myself being drawn into the character as,i listen to him speak and watch just the, subtle emotion in his eyes i couldnt, help but be enamored with the character, hes gentle soft-spoken most of the time, and hes even got a quirkiness to him, that i found very endearing the movie is,just under two hours at an hour and 49,minutes and its patiently told but at,no point did i find it slow or boring, now i do believe that if youre not, connecting with the characters or in a,mindset to watch something thats, quieter like this it will feel like its, dragging and possibly make it even seem, pointless but i dont believe its, pointless at all the character journeys, and growth are exceptional making me,never want to move my eyes away from the, screen and the cinematography in this is,stunning there are some shots where the, camera is completely locked down and, then our subjects move into frame and, then into focus but they can also move, out of frame without the camera, following and while this wasnt done a,lot of the time it was a great effect to,illustrate movement and then show, transients the shots also alternate, between some extreme wide shots to show, the subjects within the scale of the, surrounding setting and then in one, scene where jesse is listening to just, this audio through johnnys microphone, when theyre in new york hes walking, around this parking lot and around, subways and stuff we get to see just how, tiny jesse is as he wanders around the, scenery around him but there are also, some very powerful intimate shots that, allow us to connect with the emotion, held within the actors eyes and i left, how each framing seemed to support and, even create the appropriate emotion of a,particular scene so overall come on come,on is a moving and powerful character, journey showing that we dont need, flashy or big characters to illustrate, effective character growth the actors, have wonderful charisma creating, performances that are captivating within,a patient emotional narrative the, cinematography is made all the more, beautiful by the choice to present this,in black and white and the use of actual, interviews i think is a powerful, storytelling device that complements and, enhances the themes of grief friendship, and hope this also showcases how, talented of an actor joaquin phoenix is,and how he continues to choose roles, that resonate and connect with audiences,in meaningful ways i absolutely adored, this film and all that went into making,it theres no sex or nudity some, profanity and not really any violence i,give come on come on five out of five, couches whats a good character story, that you enjoy let me know in the, comments below if you enjoyed this, review How Joaquin Phoenix Handles Parenting in ‘C’mon C’mon’| Anatomy of a Scene

Cmon Cmon – Movie Review

good evening its the oscar expert here, with brother bro its time to review, come on come on this is an upcoming film, from director mike mills who did, beginners and 20th century women the, film follows walking phoenix who takes, care of his nephew after his family is,going through some challenging times if,youve seen any mike mills films you, know what youre getting into it has a,very like new york noah bombach dialogue, heavy naturalistic style joaquin phoenix, does a brilliant job out of completely, blending into this film to the point, where you dont even see him anymore you, dont see an actor in the same way that, with francis mcdormand and nomad land, you didnt see a celebrity theyre gonna,be people who are like oh its just, joaquin phoenix like playing himself but, like youre saying whats impressive is,how remarkable he disappears and just, blends into what the movie needs him to,be and this is his first role sims joker, and it could not be more different if,anybody was kind of lost by like, how wacky he was in that movie you are, going to be pulled right back in i,wouldnt put it as hes playing himself, hes playing in the moment the entire, time no i agree hes not im saying, people would accuse that but i dont, like that i hate that accusation because,it just takes away like the essence of,what acting is i think there are three, performances in here that are just, absolutely excellent of course one is,joaquin phoenix who is just brilliantly, settled throughout and then you have, gabby hoffman who plays his sister and, gabby hoffman surprised me a lot because, she was really good in this and she, brought a lot of personality and humor, here her character is definitely more, supporting but its a one that you can, really connect with and actually you can, come away with this film seeing her, perspective very well and she gives this, really honest portrayal of what a mother,is thats really central to the film and, then theres woody norman who plays the, child in this film and hes, incredible hes as good as joaquin, phoenix let me reiterate he is,as good the first scene when he became, very vulnerable and i just felt like oh,my god like thats a child that was the, moment when i was like locked into the, film hes an absolute wonder like i,actually dont know how this happened, its so rare to get performances that, feel so authentic for actors in this age, range i think hes probably around 10,years old playing this part and this, character is written just so,intelligently like i think mike mills, approach to writing was really to ask, himself like what is the intention of,this character like within every scene, and of course it seems standard but, writing children a lot of times theyll, just be like daddy why do adults fight, sometimes or theyll just like ask, questions and theyll say things kind of,mechanically mike mills was really, treating this character with a lot of,intelligence and integrity and also the, level of trust you can tell he has with, joaquin phoenix i dont know what in,prep they did to find that or if theyre, both just extremely well trained for the, screen and like how to look like youre, relating with one another the listening,on part of joaquin phoenix and woody, norman is incredible every scene they, were in was captivating the essence of,this film is the relationship between, these two characters and its so,heartwarming charming funny every, emotion that you would go through as a,parent you feel in like the scenes that, take place between these two characters, there are a lot of things you could take, away from this film but one of them that, stood out to me was this is really about, parenting in possibly the most honest, way ive seen were probably more, familiar with the joys that youre, supposed to have with parenting but i,think whats more hidden is like the, absolute stress and drain that it is on,you as like a self and a person and this, film captured that really well yeah it,made you understand why an adult might, like scream at their kid in public and,how that does not make them a bad person,at all i agree it was one of the most, authentic portrayals of parenthood i do,say that as someone who is not a parent, but this is also a film thats not even, about a parent its just about someone, whos learning to parent for the first, time in their life and really this is,just one of those movies thats about, like human connection its about what, these two characters take away from each, other and youll be surprised i think at,how much it really is about the younger, character in this situation like giving, and teaching to the adult thats, actually one of the things that makes, this film really special there are a lot,of ideas in here that the film is sort,of touching on i think a lot of,audiences will have different takeaways, about which idea kind of came across the, strongest like how we deal with incoming, generations especially now when theyre, inheriting a planet thats not even in,great condition and it sort of asks like, what keeps humanity optimistic and how,do we keep moving forward i actually, felt like that thread is more about how,do we listen to people whose, perspectives we dont necessarily, understand my biggest takeaway was that, this film is about how messy life is and,how at any stage youre actually more, confused the older you get when you, think that you actually know it all when, youre about like a teenager and then, the later life goes on the more confused, you are the more questions you have it,just tapped into something that i feel,is very true about life and it was so,honest about it,and it did not present answers for how,to deal with messiness except that we,have no choice but to,move forward and deal with it and rely,on each other i think and in those, relationships thats where we can find, optimism and beauty i think mike mills, has a very loving perspective of the, world he definitely tries to see it,honestly and for what it is and for all,its flaws but i think theres just an,appreciation for like the little moments, that make up your life that i just dont, think its called optimism i would call, that like it makes you feel appreciative, for, how life is and just like the the puzzle, that were all like sort of playing with,i would call it optimism though like it,definitely made me appreciate life, because it was like oh you can make a,work of art thats just about like how, life is so hard to understand and how as,an adult a child has just as much to,teach you as you have to teach them you, know the writing is strong when you can,see every perspective in the film i felt, like i understood it so deeply i even, understood like the child and where he,was coming from so deeply that like this, film really touched me like when we,think of dialogue we usually think of,like aaron sorkin or tarantino where, everything that comes out of a,characters mouth is like a well thought, out full and complete witty sentence the, approach that mike mills has here is,hes just trying to make people sound, like they do and the dialogue is much, more messy but to be able to craft messy, dialogue that feels real is a skill that, very few screenwriters have i think hes, like on noah bombachs level, with being able to do that and its just,a gift to watch these performers work, with that dialogue i just found this to,be such an easy movie to sink into and, connect with the dialogue and the, characters and the performances felt, incredibly authentic i think some people, also have pacing issues even i thought, the first act felt like applauded a,little bit too slowly like i didnt know, where it was going but once you settle, into the relationship between joaquin, phoenix and woody norman theres nothing, left to be desired it was just a,beautiful mosaic about life i think that, joaquin phoenix woody norman and gabby, hoffman are all kind of academy award, nomination worthy i feel like less, people probably say that about gabby, hoffman but i really think she was, amazing woody norman is probably going,to get overlooked but wouldnt it be,amazing if he didnt like if he jus
