Denon AVR-S760H Receiver Review
hi im jason gorber and were here to,look at the denon s avr s760h,so hard sometimes to keep all these,numbers in line in your brain anyway,heres a home theater receiver from our,friends at denon um,my reference system is actually part of,the denim family i have a marantz preamp,and so im relatively familiar,ive owned a number of denim pieces of,equipment over the years ive always,found them to be,quite excellent the japanese company has,been at the forefront of a lot of this,technology and they have um various,levels in their range from the sort of,initial sort of consumer end all the way,up to high-end,systems that are the home a heart of of,of many many home theaters and,other people who love listening to music,and listening to movies,and this is a very interesting model it,is um uh probably most of use for people,who want really good sound but also are,big gamers um i know thats an,increasingly important market its not a,market im actually part of,funny enough but i do very much,appreciate the need to actually have,something that actually does a,fundamental job talked about this before,what a receiver really does,this is not only decoding the audio that,is coming from your various sources but,acting as a switcher so somehow going,between um,uh your various inputs so rather than,having to worry about changing input on,your television you basically plug,everything into this,this does the switching between audio,and and video services then spits it out,to your your um your monitor your,television,and a lot of um,models up to contemporary models do not,fully support hdmi,at its at its current level um,which allows for 4k 120 hertz or 8k 60,hertz and this model does it has six,hdmi inputs on the back ill show you in,the back the back in a moment but six,hdmi inputs in the back three of which,are fully capable of doing basically,full bandwidth which allows you to for,example plug in lets say an xbox or a,playstation the latest level and,actually have your full,um vrr virtual refresh rate full um,bandwidth essentially um hdmi signals,plus the advantage of having full,atmos sound and the like,um,its its 75 watts a channel into two,channels on the specifications um,sort of run that way the test,basically though when you do that kind,of testing its really testing in stereo,mode not necessarily in full speaker,mode,um and and so this will drive,any reasonably,efficient speaker system youre not,going to use these to drive big monster,speakers without a lot of effort having,to crank the volume up probably more,than you wanted to but if you have any,reasonable like bookshelf satellite,speakers obviously well be fine but if,you have any sort of reasonable,bookshelf speakers without crazy need,impedance to drive this will do a very,very good job again i think this is a,perfect solution for those that just,want to set and forget it this is not,something to be upgraded not something,to work in liaison with other models,it simply does what it needs to do which,is a buy,a receiver a home theater receiver that,you plug in and it drives uh your atmos,system,now there are seven channels of,amplification in this you can set that,up in various ways using the menu,you can set it up obviously you can set,it up in stereo mode,just if you only have two two speakers,you can set up in,7.1 which is front center left side,surround rear surround or you can set it,up in an atmos or a dtsx setup where you,basically have 5.1 so front center left,side or rear surrounds and then ceiling,speakers,it does not have and ill show the back,i mean this for those that care about,such things you see its not the latest,thing in the world but you can see here,we have our hdmi inputs we have our our,robust um,speaker uh ports here um banana plug,compatible we have wi-fi we have,ethernet we have even some uh composite,inputs which are great anybody who has a,vhs player sticking around i have,laserdisc so im really pleased to,actually see this in 2022 continuing it,also has a photo input which is,excellent as a moving magnet,photo input im super pleased to see,that so again this truly can be the,heart of both your music and movie,system im a big fan of that thats the,way i run my stuff now um again we have,those six inputs and the one output on,the back but what we do not have here,are rca outs two,additional atmos amplifications so you,cant really use this as a processor you,cant have this as your seven one system,and then have something else amplifying,two four six atmos thats not what this,is designed for there are other denon,and or marantz um,items that do that sort of thing thats,not what this is for what this is for is,the person who wants the biggest bang,for their buck to get something that,sounds really terrific that basically,works with almost every codec you want,codec meaning the type of um,audio package or video package that that,you want to run through here and and to,do a good if not excellent job of um,making that stuff sound great and this,absolutely does that the remote again,relatively straightforward remote,nothing super fancy its got a couple of,quick select buttons that are,customizable it does have the surround,modes on the bottom has this eco button,which i guess you know we need to have,but when youre doing this stuff its,already not so eco-friendly um at the,best of times but nonetheless we want to,uh sort of get the most out of,what we can so its nice to actually see,that that there theres a button,actually accommodate that on the sticker,you can see theres just absolute oodles,of um,uh different uh uh capabilities im also,dtsx being the um,um,again the surround modes the,object-based surround modes that are on,the top but you also have,all this gazillion,different uh inputs spotify connect um,its got um,capabilities for all for siri and alexa,and and google it has it has these uh,all all the the various modes that you,can actually use on their their app and,actually um stream directly to it the,fact that it has ethernet on the back,big big plus um we all know that um for,those in the know if you can actually,wire it in it is much much better to,have every every device you wire in,makes everything elses wi-fi work that,much better so if you can wire it its,great but otherwise you have these,little,antenna that sort of stick out of the,back here they are these little two,little guys that you can actually have,um for going um wi-fi if you wish youre,not actually streaming your video to,here so the bandwidth for wi-fi,is is sufficient i just much prefer,bluetooth for that type of connection uh,sorry for ethernet for that type of,connection,uh bluetooth on my mind because of,course there is a bluetooth,compatibility bluetooth isnt always the,best sound youre actually usually,getting better from the internal,streaming actually using the internet,with the unit using the unit to pull the,song down rather than on your mobile,device than to bluetooth then to the,device,but nonetheless the fact they can,connect via bluetooth why not modern,modern device should actually do that,beefy knobs here ones volume ones,input you see that that um we have one,of these sort of blue pixelated um,screens that has got i had stuff from,sony in the 1980s that had pretty much,identical sort of uh pixelated layout,very straightforward hardly it looks,like a receiver this could be from any,era the difference is that its internal,capabilities have have,really risen to the top and because of,those hdmi inputs thats truly its,biggest selling point,if you are,looking for something that is a little,bit future proof that allows you to hook,up gaming consoles or uhd 4k blu-ray,players,to have your television talk to it,nicely and if youre not going to go,crazy with the number of speakers that,you have in your house like i have done,this really is a very very solid,contender at a very reasonable price to,get you sort of a robust,receiver that works very very well at,the level of which its intended,once agai

in the past weve reviewed quite a few,different budget av receivers from,costco all around the 400 price range,well since making those reviews costcos,quietly released another budget receiver,the denon avr s760h so thats why today,were going to be checking it out and,talking about why it might be the best,entry level receiver that costcos ever,sold if that sounds like something youd,be interested in then stick around and,well get into it right after the intro,[Music],all right so as i mentioned this is the,denon avr s760h which is actually an,upgraded version of the s750h that we,reviewed back in april this receiver is,actually pretty surprising because,costco decided to release it without,warning and at the time of writing this,video its hard to even get much,information about it either way lets,get right into it this is a 7.2 channel,dolby atmos av receiver thats rated to,push out 75 watts per channel into 8,ohms just like the 750h,of course in the box youll get a few,accessories like the remote radio,antennas and one of these little,cardboard tripods thats included for,the odyssey calibration microphone,taking a quick look at the back of the,receiver we have seven pairs of binding,posts for connecting speakers a phono,preamp for hooking up a turntable and a,couple of analog stereo inputs,am fm antenna connectors a pair of,subwoofer outputs,two composite video connectors for older,devices like laserdisc or dvd players as,well as digital coaxial and toslink,connectors for digital audio we also get,an ethernet network port and finally,some hdmi ports six inputs and one,output,again pretty much just like the 750h,from 2019 except we actually get one,extra port on the 760.,the s760h is also 17.1 inches wide by,13.3 inches deep by 6 inches tall and it,weighs in at about 19 pounds or around,eight and a half kilograms again just,like the 750h,so what exactly is the difference here,well thats where things start to get,interesting because the avr s760h is as,far as we can tell the first av receiver,to come in at this price point with,working hdmi 2.1 support,in our previous reviews of the 750h one,of the things that we wish denon did,with their avr was to add hdmi 2.1,support for 4k 120 and 8k 60.,because it was an older 2019 model it,only supported hdmi 2.0 b which left it,behind the yamaha tsr 700 at least in,theory,with that said since our review came out,it sounds like some people have reported,problems with the yamahas hdmi 2.1,support and yamaha has even started an,hdmi board replacement program for the,rx v6a and the tsr-700 to try to fix,these issues so thats why we were,really excited when we heard about this,new denon avr that supports hdmi 2.1,you can see on the back of the denon,here that three of the six hdmi inputs,are marked as being 8k compatible and,these are actual hdmi 2.1 ports well be,testing these ports with our ps5 later,in this video but before we do i just,wanted to mention a few other things,about this receiver that i feel are,pretty important,aesthetically i really like the way it,looks just like i thought the old 750h,looked pretty good especially for being,mostly plastic its designed to look,like an aluminum faceplate and along,with the big display on the front it,really does a good job of looking like a,higher end piece of gear than it,actually is of course this actually has,all the online features youd expect,from a new receiver like integration,with amazon echo google home and apple,homepod its also compatible with the,heos app and everything else youd,expect from an hdmi 2.1 receiver like,hdr10 hlg dolby vision vrr alm and more,which ill discuss further in a bit,as with most receivers around this price,point you also get built-in room,correction and weve heard good things,about the odyssey room correction built,into these denon avrs,but for reviews we usually dont run,automatic room correction just to make,sure we can hear what the receiver is,capable of in a less ideal situation,this lets us figure out how the receiver,itself sounds without any room,correction getting in the way,we always recommend trying to listen to,the receiver with room correction both,enabled and disabled to see which sounds,better in your setup anyway once we had,everything hooked up like our appearing,audio novus towers and center channel we,could get this 760 set up and get,started with the listening tests,the interface built into this receiver,is pretty much the same as a 750h and,the initial configuration is pretty,straightforward as far as sound quality,goes it was very similar to the previous,750h which we already were very happy,with and quite honestly we were very,impressed at how well a receiver at this,price point was able to drive our,speakers with no problem if you want to,hear how we felt about the sound of this,receiver we definitely recommend,checking out our previous review on the,750h because we feel pretty much all the,same conclusions apply here but again,while the audio of this receiver is,pretty good the thing that were most,excited about is its ability to pass,through 4k 120 hertz over hdmi 2.1,of course to make sure we get a good,connection between the ps5 the avr and,the tv were going to need to use good,hdmi cables that are rated to deliver a,full bandwidth hdmi 2.1 connection,thats why we got a couple of rupro 8k,fiber optic hdmi cables which are,actually hdmi 2.1 certified some devices,can be pretty picky with the cables you,use when trying to run high speed,signals like 4k 120 or ak60 so you want,to make sure you have high quality,cables to run your console with well,leave a link to the repro ak cables,were showing here weve been using,these cables for close to a year without,any issues so were pretty confident in,recommending them anyway we connected,our ps5 to the avr and the avr to the tv,to get started when we did we went over,the ps5 video settings to see what,resolution and refresh rates were,available to output to our receiver and,the most we could get was 60 hertz so we,checked the receiver settings and we,discovered that we needed to enable 8k,enhanced mode on the hdmi port that the,ps5 was connected to in order for it to,pass through 4k 120. once we did that,and reconfigured hdr on the ps5 we,checked again and lo and behold we could,output full 4k at 120 hertz with hdr10,enabled,the 760h has a pretty handy info menu,that you can open to see more,information about the video signal and,as you can see here the avr is passing,through a proper 4k 120 signal,we went ahead and verified this on the,tv by going into its settings and as you,can see here its also detecting that,the receiver is passing through 4k at,120hz,now because we have a sony x900h we,cant actually test things like vrr on,this receiver because our tv doesnt,support those features yet it sounds,like a firmware update is on its way but,at this time of recording this video we,cant test everything right now with,that said it sounds like a lot of people,have had good luck with all the hdmi 2.1,features youd expect which again is,pretty amazing when you consider the low,price point of this avr,so basically to wrap this up the denon,avr s760h is a new s750h,with support for hdmi 2.1 connectivity,we thought that the 750h was a great,receiver in our original review but with,the addition of the 4k 120 and 8k 60,support that the 760h brings we feel,this is the best choice out there right,now for an entry-level receiver in fact,wed say that this is the best receiver,that costco sells right now for price,sound quality and features that just,work out of the box without needing a,firmware update,especially if youre in the market for a,good avr that will let you run your next,gen game console without any hassles,it also gives you enough power to run a,wide range of speakers and we think this,receiver would be a great match for,something like the klipsch 5.0.2,dolby atmos system which we also,reviewed and thought was another great,deal from costco,if you want to check

so in this video im going to review the,denon avr 760h which just replaced,the 750h model,that model was only capable of 4k,resolution this model is capable of,putting up to 8k or 4k 120 frames per,second,it also has all the goodies like auto,low latency mode which is cool for video,uh for,playing video games,and uh its a great little package it,has adobe atmos support,uh dtsx um,even has odyssey,the base level of odyssey doesnt you,know it doesnt have as much room,correction it basically just takes,measurements uh the distance and it sets,the levels automatically for your,speakers i already ran it in my room and,it worked quite well i tested it out and,i was very pleased with the results so,as far as the looks i mean its a its a,good looking receiver okay theres not,much you can do for a receiver,as far as looks i mean its a bunch its,a black box with knobs and buttons its,what what matters is whats inside in,this case uh for the price point it has,a lot of features it has six uh hdmi,inputs,even has uh support for uh it has a,phono input if youre into vinyl,a lot of,id say five five years ago it was,it was rare to find a budget receiver,with a final uh input so if youre into,uh vinyl youre good to go with this one,as well,um this receiver packs seven channels of,amplification,uh and its rated at 75 watts per,channel at eight ohms uh for two uh,channels driven,and i like i said i installed it in my,whole theater and i ran it,my home theater is equipped with seven,speakers so its good for 7.2.4,but im only this receiver with this,receiver i have it set to 5.2.2,in other words five main channels the,two fronts the center and two surrounds,and two subwoofers and two height,speakers,you have the option of using the back,surrounds in this receiver as well which,i am not doing,um,so,i watched a little bit of the snyder cut,last night and,it did a really good job the overhead,effects were effective everything was,very clear,okay so this is the remote that came,with the uh receiver and believe it or,not this is the remote that came with my,three thousand dollar like pioneer lead,receiver which is a flagship model,um you can its pretty safe to say that,this is a better remote and youre,getting it with a sub 500 receiver,uh so,kudos to get denim for producing,a shipping a better remote um this ones,fine it does the job but you know i,think this is a little more pleasing,you know to hold a little more,substantial i like it its not backlit,but its fine um not even this i mean,this again not backlit no but yeah i,definitely prefer this uh denim remote,okay so,um,just to go over like the front panel a,bit,this is the uh,with this knob you can change the the uh,the input selector this is the volume,knob of course,these buttons,allow you to change lets say its in,its already set to stereo for blu-ray,if you hit movie you can set it to dolby,surround,ets neural x etc and that works for,music playing and pure,if your sound is,this pure button,i believe theres one a button on the,remote as well,it allows you to like kind of like,bypass any of the processing within the,receiver itself to give you the cleanest,and purest signal uh possible,its uh,a lot of purists like when youre,listening to vinyl or something you can,hit the pure button and youll just get,the cleanest and most unprocessed,version of the sound,so im going to go back to,there um,you know you can select a couple of you,know you have some,four quick select inputs,there as well,and of course the power button and,theres one usb port there so,thats pretty pretty standard stuff,theres no uh hdmi input or anything,like that in the front but theres,plenty in the back like i said theres,six plus an 8k,three of which are 8k capable so just,one thing i wanted to note here,after i turned on my xbox one down here,it automatically i guess talked to the,receiver talked to the xbox and saw that,it was an xbox one and displayed xbox,one without without me having to,manually input or change the name of the,input right now i have my,uh panasonic receiver um i have my,panasonic blu-ray player on so im gonna,just switch,as you can see ive never turned it on,with this receiver before and i switched,it to the blu-ray uh input and it,automatically sensed that it was a,panasonic,i cant see the full name maybe if i hit,display i just want to show you that it,did sense the panasonic blu-ray player,name automatically so im just going to,go to xbox real quick and then come,right back and then it says panasonic bd,and heres the business end of the,receiver,what do we got here,we got,wow theres a phono preamp,this actually you can connect a,turntable,you know this is like a budget receiver,and you still got a phone or that that,goes to show the the popularity of the,format right now,so,i guess the things to point out,um you got three,three um,assignable 8k,these are three uh,input hdmi inputs that accept ak signals,i guess these three,accept uh up to you know 4k or lower,and theres just one out which is fine,by me,so you got your front speakers,um center,surround,and surround back which is either,you can,this is probably,im going to assume these are either,surround backs or the heights high,channel yeah its assignable so they can,be heights,i can see it down there,there could be heights or surround back,okay so unfortunately my my tv does not,support uh 4k 120,but i do i was able to test other things,i can confirm that auto low latency mode,works and also,variable refresh rate vrr also works,just fine passing through the receiver,so um i can also say that it uh i have,it high,its working through the with the,highest color depth and im gonna try to,set it to pcrgb which is even higher,[Music],and,everything works fine,and then make sure that all these are,still on,[Music],so yeah works good so i have the snyder,cut playing here and hes as you can see,i have uh i currently as you can see the,active speakers uh the current setup is,a 5.2.2,setup i have the five main channels,two subs and two,uh atmos speakers,and if you go in here you can see that,i got dolby atmos activated its coming,in at 4k 24 hdr 10,and i got,444 pull down and bt 2020,pixel depth is 10 bits,so uh everything is working perfectly,here i just want to show you that i can,get dolby atmos with true hd with no,problems uh with through this receiver,its passing through with no problems,so when i was when i set out to review,this receiver i thought hey let me,let me see if i can put it in my home,theater room that has a pioneer elite,receiver that thats msrp is 3 000. it,says 11 channels of amplification,and see if it can give me an enjoyable,experience,and i did just that i watched a couple,of movies using this receiver obviously,only using seven out of the 11 channels,that my room supports,obviously i still had all my my i had my,pb3 thousands,my definitive technologies hooked up uh,which they im using all four subs,obviously,as far as base there was no issues,whatsoever,so overall i have to say that the,experience has been very enjoyable i was,able to push this receiver up to way,more more volume than i,would normally listen to movies so,theres no problem there maybe maybe,when i pushed it a little bit it did,feel a little fatiguing like it was,reaching its limit,but,i rarely listen to movies at that volume,anyway i would say you could this,perceiver would probably be good for a,room thats slightly bigger than this,one this room has a cubic volume of,2003 about 2 300,uh cubic feet,after that youre probably going to want,to look at uh a slightly more powerful,one,i but again very very adequately,filled my room with way more volume than,i needed,as far as me did i miss,my pioneer lead did i miss my back,surrounds,did i miss my front heights which i,didnt have connected i only had my um,my,like sort of like mid mid atmos,uh speakers yeah i did miss them,i think i did i probably missed my back,surrounds more than i missed these,because these you know kind of get lost,a litt

its finally raining every receivers,right I am sure that you all have come,across the stocks of pioneer and on cure,as well by now so now with Denon Morans,Onkyo Pioneer being stable in the,country I think the stock shortage of AV,receivers is very well taken care of and,for that very reason they are continuing,this particular series of exploring and,reviewing various AV receivers so in our,last two videos we reviewed the pioneer,vsx834 as well as 935 and in this,particular video we are going to review,the x1700h from Denon now though this,model has been there since long time,its surely an upgrade to the old AV,receiver which is the x1600h,this video we are going to divide it,into three parts one obviously we are,going to explore this product and see,the features and the specification of,this model second is wherein I am going,to give you a surprise to all of you by,comparing this product with the s760h AV,receiver because s760h and x1700h are,very much at par and it confuses a lot,of people as to which model should we,really go for and for that very reason,that small element in this particular,video is going to help you clear that,doubt once and for all and in the third,part we are going to actually,compare this product or not compare what,we are actually going to look out for,the upgrade options of this particular,AV receiver within the same brand as,well as in some other brands so make,sure to watch this video till the end,because by the end of the video I am,also going to leave you all with details,and more information about how can you,design one of the best home theater room,or one of the best home theater systems,for your own living rooms or bedrooms or,dedicated Cinema rooms,[Music],[Applause],now compared to the old models of Denon,receivers if you see the front panel the,HDMI input Port which was available on,the front the AUX port is now missing,and this I feel is one of the drawbacks,of all the new AV receivers because,having that Port was very very much,handy when you have to connect the,laptop in case you never had to use it,then you are still lucky because you now,dont have that any which ways in this,particular range of the AV receiver but,with this particular AV receiver apart,from the old 4K technology that used to,get in the x1600 edge this particular AV,receiver now supports 8K as well so 8K,at 60 hertz and 4K at 120 hertz gives,you a great boost for your gaming,purposes and to get that 8K Port support,support they have got three HDMI ports,at the back which is game aux one and,aux 2. so these three ports are 8K,compatible and they are not just through,firmware they have now got the hardware,also fixed so you can very well stay,assured about getting a good refresh,rate for your gaming consoles at the,same time they have got three extra HDMI,input ports which is for your cable,satellite Tata sky or it can be your,content streaming devices like fire,devastate Roku Apple TV and for a,Blu-ray player so with all these six,HDMI inputs this AV receiver can take,care of all the possible inputs that you,would ever want to connect in a home,theater system at the same time it has,got one HDMI output which is the earc,output and this output can be connected,to your TV which has got ERC port or you,can also connect it to your projector,which may or may not have Arc,necessarily but you can at least try it,can at least transfer the video signal,properly so one output and six inputs is,the HDMI configuration of this,particular every receiver,if you look at more number of details,that are given at the back theyve got,two subpryouts which is nowadays most,common with all the AV receivers you,have also got two Optical inputs so one,for TV audio one is for your cable,satellite so a lot of setup box today,have got uh Optical ports as well so you,can actually remove the optical which is,a little more better uh for dedicated,audio transfer and you can send the,video to the TV directly so in case you,have got parents who are not used to,turning on the home theater and they,want the audio from the TV itself then,what you can do is you can simply,connect the Tata Sky setup box to your,TV which they have been used to print,from a long time and in case you are,watching wherein you want to enjoy the,audio from the home theater system but,you dont want to play with the cables,then just get the audio out from the,Tata Sky setup box which is the optical,audio connected to the audio input of,this particular AV receiver and while,the video signal will go to the TV you,can extract the audio and use it from,this particular computer system with,this both the scenarios are very well,taken care of and that is why this AV,receivers comes with two Optical outputs,now apart from that you have got FM AM,support which is pretty common though I,am not really a fan of the FM and the EM,stations because theres a lot of,distortion in the reception of the FM,signal you have to play along with the,cable a lot but compared to that if you,actually use the internet radio feature,in this particular AV receiver thats,more friendly and that is actually going,to give you many more internet Stations,of the same,channels that are there on the analog,version as well also the analog versions,are all stereo so they are not going to,give you a good surround sound,experience but these AV receivers with,the internet radio facility can be used,to explore some better options for the,surround sound,apart from that youve got two analog,inputs so thats primarily in case you,have got some old device which still,runs on a stereo uh Left Right white and,red cable you can connect it to this and,it has got one monitor video out which,is the yellow color output now thats,again an analog cable so in case you,have got a karaoke machine which has got,the white yellow red cable you can,connect it to this and you can still,transfer the video to the TV using the,yellow analog video cable the speaker,binding posts are very much nice with,all the channels mentioned properly you,have got front right front left centers,around rights around left as well as you,have got surround back,ports which are assignable ports so,these assignable can be used for by,amping 2. now thats one of the best,features if at all you want to drive a,little more power at five you know using,five channel and the floor standings,would demand for instance a little more,power you can actually assign these,surround back ports with the front,channels and thats how you can actually,draw more power to the front speakers,apart from that it has got a network,wired Land network support and it has,got good two antennas which can be,connected to your Wi-Fi network so wired,as well as Wireless connectivity to,internet is very much possible with this,device this was all about the back panel,one of the missing things in this,particular back panel is the USB port if,you see for most of the AV receivers,when you connect the streaming dongle,like for instance the Amazon Fire TV,stick you typically need it to power,using the USB port and that is where the,USB port at the back really comes in,handy for most of the EV receivers but,in this particular AV receiver theres,surprisingly no USB port at the back,theres one port in the front which,primarily is for music playback and,second in case you still want to power,it you can do that but the wires would,still be laid open and right in front of,you so thats one of the drawbacks of,not having USB a powered port at the,back,the second thing about the front portion,is that it has got two knobs as per the,old style one for input selection one,for volume control rest of all the,features are pretty same with all the AV,receivers and their old predecessors as,well so Im not going to jump into that,but talking about video which is the,other aspect which the AV receiver does,is this particular AV receiver has now,got compatibility with SDR 10 plus which,makes it more better for getting a good,color gamut as well as good
DENON S970H – Why Im Returning It
Ive been patiently waiting for Denon to,drop a line of receivers that wont have,any chip issues with 4K 120 hertz,functionality but will also have more,than a single 8K input since I have both,a PS5 and series X well Hallelujah that,day has finally come and Ive got what,appears to be the best of their budget,line the s970h in my possession its got,8K video 3D audio all the connectivity,and formats I could possibly want but,theres one big reason why its going,back lets talk about it,foreign,[Music],the Denon s970h is a 90 watt per Channel,7.2 Channel AV receiver is the top of,the line model in their S Series and,currently retails for 899 dollars it,supports every audio format you could,possibly want including 3D audio Adobe,true HD Dolby Atmos Dolby Atmos height,virtualization Adobe Atmos music Dolby,Surround DTS HD Master dcsx DTS neuro X,and DTS virtual X try saying that all in,one breath it does use the base version,of Odyssey multi EQ instead of XT or,xt32 to calibrate but Ive been using it,for years with the s960h Ive had and,find it to be just fine of course I have,been using it with a full set of poke,Signature Series speakers with s55,Towers so if youve got the speaker,Hardware to match multi EQ should yield,solid results it also has Dynamic EQ and,dynamic volume volume which in my,opinion improves the overall sound,quality when switching sources or,listening at lower volumes very helpful,for those of us in apartment situations,you can also use the multi-eq editor app,to fine-tune customization to tailor the,sound even more,now if for whatever reason youve,calibrated and you find that you cant,understand what people are saying in,shows or movies it comes equipped with,dialogue enhancer which bumps up those,frequencies and should make dialogue,more audible now if that doesnt work,you can also try boosting the decibels,of the center speaker up a bit but that,brings me to something I feel is super,important to talk about and something,Ive learned first hand now initially I,had my TV on the TV stand because I,didnt want to drill holes in the wall,which meant my center speaker had to sit,in the top Center shelf now I knew from,research that ideally you want the,center speaker to sit as close to ear,level as possible but right you could,tilt the speaker up to face your ears,and that would help well after doing so,for a few weeks it became obvious that,something needed to change as dialogue,was either too low or just sounded boomy,even after using dialogue enhancer and,boosting the center speaker volume so I,mounted the TV after all placed the,speaker up top slightly tilted it,towards my ear level and voila speech in,shows and movies sounds much better than,before so if you can do it I highly,recommend you do the same if you stream,music like I do it is Bluetooth and,Wi-Fi compatible and supports AirPlay 2,Spotify Pandora title Sirius XM and more,and can be streamed wirelessly to,compatible heos components like Denon,home speakers and control them with the,EOS app theres also a front USB port,that supports up to 24-bit 192 kilohertz,high-res audio and supports formats like,MP3 WMA wave and peg4 and Flac and it,supports Zone 2 audio playback so you,can listen to a Second Source in a,separate room but thats not something I,would use in a small apartment now all,of those features are fantastic but,lets be honest the real reason most of,us are upgrading is because we need,proper HDMI 2.1 support for our next gen,consoles the problem with the old s960h,is that in addition to the chip problems,it only has one HDMI 2.1 input so,thankfully the s970h Now features three,HDMI 2.1 inputs so even though the PS5,and series X are the only devices on the,market that would need it you might have,some future proofing just in case,Nintendo were to join the party or we,finally get the long-awaited Gamecast,with those ports we get full 8K 60 hertz,or 4K 120 hertz capabilities with HDR,hlg HDR 10 plus Dynamic HDR 3D,pass-through Arc and e-arc even Dolby,vision and now that the industry is,finally catching up variable refresh,rate and auto low latency mode now I,personally tested games that can achieve,4K 120 hertz and can confirm it works in,total you have six HDMI inputs with,three being 2.1 and 2 AK outputs and,while I personally dont see a need for,two outputs I figure you can use the,second output for something like the,Philips Hue TV light strip to plug into,the HDMI sync box you can connect two,subwoofers your standard Center left and,right left and right rear and an,additional left and right surround back,speakers which can be configured to a,7.2 speaker setup or up to 5.2.2 Atmos,as this receiver solved my needs as,someone who wants a Dolby Atmos home,theater with HDMI 2.1 support for my,consoles it absolutely does and if you,have a thousand dollar budget this is,definitely one you should consider but,theres a big reason Im sending it back,and that is because before the s9070h,the s760h was released every single,feature we talked about minus the two,HDMI outputs as it only has one and the,fact that its 75 watts per Channel,instead of 90 can be found on the s760h,the best part the s970h retails for 899,at the time of this video while the,s760h can be found for as low as 499,dollars at Costco if you dont need two,HDMI outputs and refined with 75 watts,per Channel instead of 90 which honestly,youre not even going to notice a,difference of 15 watts you can save,yourself 400 and go with the s760h Ive,actually been using it now for about a,year with no hiccups and during this,time was waiting for the s970h to be,released to replace it but now that Ive,compared them spec for spec gaining 15,watts per channel for an extra 400 well,you tell me is it worth it the only,drawback here was according to,Crutchfield Denon has now discontinued,it but it is still in stock at Costco at,the time of this video and theres a few,on Amazon you can grab and save believe,thats the,1700h but what were talking about today,would be the denon,760h and in the world of chip shortages,and of just,having things not only astronomically,high in price because of supply and,demand but denon really did a lot of,fantastic things with this av receiver,and kept the overall budget,exceptionally low,now weve seen other av receivers being,rumored so theres the pioneer lx 305,series and above theres the yamaha,advantage series that would be the a2a,the a4a onkyo has their,5100 6100 and 7100 but a lot of those,arent yet available and if they are,theyre sold out and if theyre not sold,out theyre pretty high in price so,with this guy here you are actually,getting at the end of 2021 readily,available at least for the most part,whether its at costco through denon or,through resellers that are buying up,just flats of these and marking them up,just a little bit but the evaluation is,still good i paid 5.99 on amazon for,this guy here youre actually getting,six hdmi ports but three of those ports,are hdmi 2.1 and unlike the onkyo,flavors when it comes to their lower end,budgetary avrs,these three hdmi 2.1s actually have a,bandwidth of 40 gigabits per second,whereas most of the other ones i know,the yamaha as well,the a2a i believe both of those have,like 28 gigabit per second and if youre,looking to utilize next-gen consoles,things like the xbox series x the ps5,that stuffs just not going to cut it,now this also offers things like qft,allm vrr,all out of the box with no software,update required now evidently i havent,opened this box yet so were just gonna,go through the overview today its gonna,take me a while to rewire my media,cabinet but im gonna take you guys,along for the ride when that time comes,as well to go through and actually set,up the on-screen prompts were gonna,test the series x were gonna test the,ps5 were gonna make sure all of that,stuff works but to go over everything,about the s760h,from denon,lets go ahead lets get a top-down view,of this guy and im gonna have to get it,in frame so i can see it as well so when,you see the list of like absolutely,everything it does its pretty wild so,weve got airplay bluetooth wi-fi,certified thats kind of all a given at,this point you have the odyssey room,correction which i think is at least a,minimum must at this point amazon music,dts x dolby atmos dolby vision,uh,8k which of course we know because of,the hdmi 2.1 multi-zone it is a 7.2 as,well only one hdmi so i know other,flavors again and other receivers do,have the dual zones so two hdmis this,guy for my needs is just one im,replacing an onkyo,nr676 i believe is the one that i have,that has two hdmis and ive never ever,ever used the second one uh deezer audio,i heart radio napster pandora sirius,soundcloud which is cool to see,soundcloud on a,on an av receiver you have a,certification with alexa and uh hey,google so with the google assistant as,well probably triggered like three,assistants just by saying that in my,room,spotify title tune in radio just like a,whole bunch of crazy stuff so lets go,ahead lets get into this box here weve,got our handy dandy unboxing knife,because,finally i have something to cut tape,properly were not using like screws or,staples,or pci brackets or anything crazy that,weve used in the past,and,lets get into this guy here were just,going to do a general unboxing were,going to get a closer look at this avr,and again in future content were going,to go over everything that makes it tick,so,in the modern day most people may not,use this but those who do want it still,you do have your manuals which you will,need but primarily im talking about the,fm and am,antenna so i cant remember the last,time i actually listened to,local radio broadcasts on these things,but i mean its there you get some,fantastic gm cell batteries i mean come,on partner with duracell or something,get us some good batteries,you have your remote control were going,to open this guy up because i know that,the plastic thats on it is going to be,fairly shiny,and all around really good remote kind,of on the large side if you ask me but,not too too bad if i do say so myself,again with hdmi cec and stuff in the,modern day after you actually initially,set up an avr i seldomly use the remote,control i actually just use like my,apple tv 4k remote or you know let my,devices use cec and actually trigger,themselves on and off for power,you have this little guy here and for,those of you who dont know what this is,the little instructions are here so this,is for the odyssey room connection or,correction sorry its just like a little,paper tripod so you can set this in your,preferred seating area and go ahead and,do your room calibration ive been known,to just use like,boxes and stack stuff up but its cool,that that comes with that and thats,actually the first time ive ever seen,it you have your room correction,microphone right here so guys put this,in a safe place i have lost like three,of these throughout my tenure with,different avrs and theyre a pain in,the butt to go out and source i mean you,can get them but why waste money,rebuying this when it comes included so,im a box hoarder once im done with,that its going to go right back in the,box and this is going to prove,marginally difficult,so lets go ahead lets flip this guy,on its side youre not going to be able,to see me for a second kind of through,like these little flaps we can play a,little game of peekapoo here but lets,get this avr out,now right away i can tell that this is,actually a little bit smaller,footprint wise than my current avr again,i believe its the 676. once i get this,onto my table and get this box put away,then we will double check that and,verify,brb its honestly just right behind me,so if i take a look i have the,676 tx nr676 and,i know like when i was looking before,and the big issue that weve had for,like,all of 2020 and,most of 2021 is we had those faulty,boards with the hdmi 2.1 chipset they,werent certified for variable refresh,rate they just they really werent,working out for a lot of people,so,the only thing that i really saw on the,market lately until this guy came out,was the onkyo rz50 and arguably that,does a lot more than this guy,specifically on the wattage as well this,is a 7.2 but in dual channel its only,pushing 75 watts so its like on the,lower end but i think thats fine for a,good majority of people unless youre,like a crazy enthusiast anyway,but the biggest concern i had was a lot,of those avrs money wasnt really,an issue per se i had saved up like all,year and i told myself i was just going,to buy whatever av receiver c
Denon AVR-S760H Review: Costco Excellent Value HDMI 2.1 4k 120Hz VRR Receiver Vs X4700H
welcome everyone to classy tech this is,the,denon,s760h receiver you can pick it up from,costco for 450 dollars,im going to compare it to a higher end,denon x 4700h,this receiver is 7.2 channels or you can,do,five point,up to two subs then point two for atmos,which is what my setup is so i have five,surface level speakers two at most or up,high fronts,this is not going to be the most,in-depth receiver review that goes,through all of this kind of stuff like i,dont use airplay i dont use bluetooth,music,so im not going to do that,i am going to compare it like i said to,the 4700h,through a variety of movie scenes,uh to see if theyre how much of a,drop-off in,volume or quality that there is,um,this receiver does have three hdmi 2.1,ins,only one hdmi 2.1 out only one hdmi out,period,no component inputs which,in 2021 isnt a big deal but if you do,have an older system or something,something to keep in mind,for 450 i think its going to be a great,option for a lot of people as an entry,into,a,actual home theater setup instead of a,sound bar,if you can compare it with a,decent affordable speaker system again,you only need,like the for example costco has the,klitsch,5.0.2,system that i believe is eight or nine,hundred dollars,and the it has two towers with upward,firing speakers built into the tower so,you actually dont have to mount,anything in the ceiling i think that is,a no-brainer companion to go with this,um,when it comes back in stock ill,probably pick those up to test with it,so,keep an eye out for that and subscribe,if you arent if you want to see how,those deal with it,so im going to pop this box open see,what it looks like,all right you get your am and fm,antennas,not something i actually use anymore,quick start guide,i really like these these uh cable,labels,so you can wire,or label all of your speaker wires and,your hdmi cables and everything,all right this is just a registration,booklet,something for spotify,and kiosk again stuff im not going to,use,heres your odyssey microphone,so you can run odyssey,[Applause],the buildable tripod for the odyssey,microphone,the denon remote,which this is the 4700h remote,so theres some difference here but not,a whole lot,this is very similar,may even be the same remote as the older,denim that i have the 2200 i believe,a couple of batteries,so this receiver is roughly 20 pounds,if thats going to matter for,the entertainment shelf that youre,going to store it on,all right so this actually has a the,power cable built in which,personally im a fan of i on my denon,2200,it did not have a built-in power cable,and for whatever reason it was just,loose all the time,and would come out occasionally was,annoying so some people may not like,that i do,got your wi-fi antennae,you got your three hdmi 2.0 b ports is,one two and three and then four five and,six are hdmi 2.1 which do 4k 120 or 8k,60,and then the output is hdmi 2.1,um,the speaker ports are,typically what what you see,and they take banana plugs,you got two sub outs,uh two optical ends,a couple of uh composites,um your antenna ports ethernet,pretty much what you would expect at,this price point,on the front theres just a usb theres,no hdmi in on the front,your headphone jack and then the mic,port for the odyssey mic,uh quick select for the first four hdmi,2.0 b hdmi ports,as well as four sound mode buttons,the smaller dial is your source select,below that is the power button,and then the bigger dial is your volume,so,for 450 dollars its what you would,expect,and im gonna see how it compares to the,two thousand dollar forty seven hundred,h,and im gonna run through some various,movie scenes,and i dont have a real decibel meter,but im just going to use my phone with,an app that can chart a graph,im gonna play the same scenes from the,same spot and at the same spot,screenshot the graph,and then check the average and maximum,decibel,point that was red,the,microphone on this camera,will not capture any kind of bass or,anything like that so dont expect it to,sound very good,get testing here and ill come back at,the end with some thoughts on of thieves on the xbox enable,120 hertz is enabled,this is on the sony a80j so you need to,need to make sure that your er port is,set to enhanced which means youre not,going to get dolby vision unless you,switch it back and forth,and if i go to the xbox settings,you can see 4k 120 hertz,everything is checked except for dolby,vision,and because its the a80j theres no,variable refresh rate yet,and in order to,get the receiver to do that you have to,hit the setup button on the receiver,remote,and then you go to video,4k 8k signal format and set that to 8k,enhanced,and then youll get your hdmi 2.1,to be working,okay so the conclusion that im coming,up with is that,you dont pay more for the receiver,unless you need the extra channels or,the ability to have an amp hooked up to,it to power the speakers more,theres essentially no change in the,sound or,volume that im getting,on the,cheaper s760h,around 60 to 65 is about the max volume,i was getting before,it would start to h
