Downton Abbey: A New Era – Review!

downton abbey is finally spilling the,tea on the crawley family and i have my,review right now,[Music],hello everybody and welcome to my review,of downton abbey a new era which is the,second downton abbey film if youre not,familiar with downton abbey you may know,it by the name that your less,sophisticated friends call it downtown,abbey or as i like to call it boomer,avengers downton abbey is directed by,simon curtis making his first,contribution to the saga and it is,written by julian fellowes the long-time,writer of the series as well as the,writer of the previous downton abbey,film in 2019. believe it or not its,been over a decade since downton abbey,debuted on television and even more than,the last movie a new era drops you right,into the middle of the lives of the,crawley family their family and extended,family and the lives of downton servants,and their families if youre looking for,hand-holding the best that youre going,to get is a brief recap video of what,happened in the last film which preceded,the movie at the amc early access,screening that i saw on tuesday night,hopefully its in front of your,screening too because i found it to be,very useful if youve never seen downton,abbey im going to tell you right now,you are going to have,no idea what the hell is going on,because this is very much about the,intricate character relationships that,have been built over seasons and now two,movies its great news for fans of,downton abbey that want to see all these,different payoffs between these,different characters and learn what the,next chapter of the story is going to be,but its bad news for anybody who might,get dragged along to see this movie and,doesnt really care about anything,thats happening luckily i am a downton,fan so im very much interested in the,past of the dowager countess and what,anna bates and mr bates are doing and,all the delightful crossness of mr,carson but this is not the movie that,you want to go to if you want to dabble,into downton abbey and see if you enjoy,it downton abbey a new era centers,around a secret involving family,matriarch violet crawley the dowager,countess played delightfully by maggie,smith the crawlies are shocked to find,that a frenchman has willed violet a,villa in the south of france alluding to,a short but magical time they spent,together decades ago this development,sends most of the family to france,including hugh bonnevilles robert,crawley the earl of grantham who fears,that his mothers possible dalliance in,the past may also call his lineage into,question at downton abbey eldest,daughter mary crawley played by michelle,dockery stays behind to supervise the,filming of a movie at downton featuring,matinee stars guy dexter played by,dominic west and mirna dalgish played by,laura haddock in a turn of events more,than a little reminiscent of singing in,the rain the movies production is put,at risk with the advent of the talking,motion picture one of the reasons that i,think downton abbey works so well in so,many different countries is that it,gives a veneer of class it makes you,feel posh and important to indulge in,what i think is very much a guilty,pleasure because downton abbey at its,core is very much like a soap opera and,this movie has a seasons worth of,developments in just two hours there are,weddings and vacations forbidden love,possible infidelity health scares family,drama and so much more in less capable,hands downton abbey might have felt like,cheap melodrama but with julian fellowes,once again writing the screenplay it,feels more like high art there is a,reason why julian fellows won an emmy,for writing this show and an oscar for,writing its unofficial test pilot,gosford park as always a lot of the,credit also has to go to the cast of the,film hugh bonneville delicately plays,lord grantham a man who sees his era,passing with a mix of acceptance,annoyance sadness and pride that his,daughter mary is ushering his family,into a new age michelle dockery is,always a pleasure to watch as lady mary,who tries not to tread on tradition too,much while also pushing for progress a,subplot about lady marys marriage is,one of the films few narrative dead,ends but the fact that the movie gives,her a lot more to do than worry about,her absent husband doesnt make it seem,like her character is a waste in this,movie jim carter is always good for a,laugh as mr carson the former downton,butler whos once again brought out of,retirement to accompany the family to,france carsons strict adherence to the,stuffy old british ways of doing things,is a great contrast to the light and,airy atmosphere of the south of france,and then theres maggie smith the ninja,assassin of downton abbey who can take a,30 second scene and turn it into the,highlight of a two-hour movie it seems,the public only want films that talk i,should have thought the best thing about,films is that you cant hear them be,even better if you couldnt see them,either as the aging dowager countess,maggie smith seems to be somewhat,limited by her own real world health but,that doesnt stop her from delivering,her trademark razor-sharp dialogue with,equal parts wit and venom the dowager,countesss desire to secure her own,legacy and her familys lies at the,heart of this film and the movie levels,up every time shes on screen the cast,of downton abbey is so sprawling that,would probably take the length of a,feature film to talk about all of them,but here are a few highlights of the,returning regulars elizabeth mcgovern,leslie nicholl and penelope wilton make,the most of their spotlight kevin,doyles mr mosley butler turned,schoolteacher is prominently featured as,he roams downton in awe of the film,production thats happening there and,robert james collier gets a lot of,screen time as thomas barrow the downton,butler and head of house who crosses,paths with dominic wests guy dexter in,some unexpected ways west and laura,haddock as the newest faces in the cast,bring a sense of theatricality to their,roles as silent film stars and haddock,gets several opportunities to both ham,it up and dig deeper into what could,have been a one-dimensional diva,character downton abbey a new era is,openly playing to the established fan,base and i suspect that to many of them,this is their version of an mcu type,event the tuesday screening that i went,to was pretty full i think that mara and,i were probably the youngest there by 10,to 20 years but i knew that i was in the,theater with a bunch of downton abbey,fans when the theater gasped in surprise,after somebody breaks a vase it was like,somebody was shot that just goes to show,you how much the audience who loves,downton abbey is invested in this show,they care about the furnishings of,downton abbey and the characters even,more so yes downton abbey is a,high-class soap opera and unashamed of,it but you can also tell that everybody,behind and in front of the camera really,cares about these characters i mean,theyve spent over a decade telling this,story and this movie does have a lot of,heart and packs a real emotional punch,the acting is excellent across the board,the laughs are there the film looks,beautiful i really doubt the downton,fans are going to be disappointed but,this isnt a movie thats likely to win,over new fans not that i really think,its trying to is this movie gonna make,300 million dollars i dont think so but,as a downton devotee myself i would be,perfectly happy if they could put out,movies every two to three years that,would justify putting a new chapter out,to take downton abbey past the 1930s,into the 1940s to the brink of world war,ii maybe this could be the boyhood of,english soap operas so that 20 or 30,years from now we could have second or,third generations that are going to the,theater to enjoy the continuing,adventures of the crawley family so that,is a recommendation from me on downton,abbey new era with the caveat that if,you dont know anything about downton,abbey you should probably just go back,and start

okay so i didnt review the first movie,because i hadnt seen the show at the,time then when we finally watched the,series we loved it so much we got,through it pretty damn fast we dug the,hell out of the first movie too as it,was what a movie continuation of a show,should be where yeah it certainly felt,like a bigger budgeted episode of the,series but a damn good episode and it,made the smart decision of with a large,ensemble cast really focusing on a,handful of characters as not to make the,movie feel cluttered or disjointed,creator julian fellowes is excellent at,handling material with a large cast like,this as he did when he also co-wrote the,film gossford park with downton abbey a,new era i also had a great time at this,as the movie is comfort food cinema in,all the best ways possible its a film,that handles life and death as a means,of celebration as opposed to being,depressing theres a couple of main,stories in this one of which has lord,grantham carson cora and others visiting,a french villa which his mother violet,crowley has just inherited and there may,be a mystery as to whether robert,crowley is the son of the man who left,her this villa with these characters,visiting an exotic land these movies are,like the anti-sex in the city of movies,which did everything wrong in terms of,adapting a series to the screen there,was also one review i read where one of,the headlines was even thank god they,dont go to abu dhabi then in the other,storyline which i loved a film crew,comes to downton to make a silent film,only when talkies are starting to become,the in thing now the film almost has to,shut down production until they begin,rewriting it and dubbing over the actors,its fascinating watching them learn to,make a movie with sound which also,involves having live foley artists on,set to make the sound effects as the,action is happening i love these stories,about how the actors are not only,terrified as to whether theyll be able,to make the transition into talkies but,theres very good arcs here especially,with the spoiled actress played by laura,haddock who shows up on set as a,nightmare but you really get to know,this person and the fears she has about,her very thick accent not being able to,survive in a world where she has to talk,on screen honestly the movie is like,downton abbey with a dash of singing in,the rain and in terms of a film crew,making a movie inside of a mansion its,a way better version of this awful,netflix movie i watched called the,bubble the first film may have been a,little more focused than this for the,first half it felt like two different,episodes kind of meshed in together so,it was a lot of okay now were here and,now were here and now were back here,theres also one storyline with korra,where when it was resolved im not sure,if the movie would have lost anything,without that subplot but it does bring,out some great performances all that,said its two very damn good episodes as,the story with the film crew is,extremely entertaining and funny while,the plot at the french villa has some,real weight to it in terms of characters,past and also closure and the dialogue,is just fantastic with it goes without,saying nearly every line from maggie,smith being pure gold carson also has,several funny moments as he wildly,disapproves of a movie being shot at,downton and theres a great scene where,the staff has to work as extras in a,scene for the film within the film and,speaking of closure the movie is written,in a way that if there is going to be,more in the series there certainly could,be but if this does serve as a finale it,very much works as that too,from the series beginning to the second,film its just great writing not only,seeing all of these characters that we,love but with these fantastic arcs over,all of these years especially with,characters such as thomas barrow and tom,branson and i love what they do with,both of these characters in this film i,give the movie an extremely high b plus,its just a really lovable feel good,movie with numerous sweet and funny,moments if you love the series you dont,need me to tell you to see it youve,probably already seen it by now thanks,for watching everyone and stay tuned,because well have reviews coming up for,top gun maverick and the bobs burgers,movie and check out our latest cinema,snob episode on her majestys top gun,see you next time,[Music]

the the harry potter bit of your life,which kind of changed your life but then,downton comes along,[Applause],is that one of those things where you,thought you were famous until you were,in downton,no i,i didnt i didnt think that at all it,didnt its only since downton that,people,seem to know,you know who whos who stopped me and,asked me but its only since downton and,thats thats television for you yes,its common its television,but funnily enough i was i was in,waitrose in storings in my face,and a little boy was at the um checkout,with his mother and he kept looking at,me,and,i thought what am i going to do about,anyone,kept looking at me and looking at me,and i said,can i help you and he said,its all right itll come to me in a,minute,[Music],[Laughter],the people coming up to you now like,because apparently americans are very,well american you know theyre not shy,americans,no well no no but i dont go anywhere,really where they can get at me,its its usually in museums and art,galleries and things so that limits,things,i keep away from that and and harrods i,dont go now,so are you in a way sort of glad that,downtons over oh,yeah no i really am,because honestly she was about by the,time she must have been 110,so i couldnt go on and on,i,couldnt it just didnt make sense,i know alex i know you youre a big,dancing fan i am i i shouted it a lot,you havent seen it i do yeah we watch,it and we shouted it because im not in,it,have you ever watched dancing,[Laughter],ive got the box set,now,we hear and i dont know because youre,you you know you run in rich circles,exotic circles and have we had a good,authority that the the actual queen,watches downton abbey because we hear,that shes a fan,youre not supposed to talk about what,okay,no,im i was told that she did but then i,have been told by another gentleman who,works in those establishments,that she likes mid-summer murder,okay,i didnt take it back,they might just clap for 45 minutes its,good,uh youre very very welcome and youve,all just come from the premiere of your,film monuments man yeah yeah yeah thats,why were drinking champagne we have,just celebrated right yes yeah in fact,now why is yours not in a champagne,do you want people to think im just a,man of the people uh simple white wine,from me oh i just like drinking more,than anyone else at one time,lets get started,[Applause],[Music],[Applause],[Applause],wow you dont do this at home dont do,that this ale is crazy,in your place there you must have lots,of great memorabilia from downtown do,you have a tiara or a lace doily or,anything you know i dont i dont have,anything and actually i was wondering if,you know i had anything obviously,because you asked if we did and,and uh i was cooking last night and im,thinking surely ive got something ive,got something that i took from set and,then i looked down and my my wooden,spoon that i was using it says mrs,patmores kitchen on it,and i dont i have no clue where i got,it it was like it was given to me by,someone or it was,it was maybe a gift from someone on set,but thats the only thing that i own,which dont lie this has been,disappointing,we were hoping for a lot more here,like a saddle or you know something,something much better,but is it all kind of down to the,downtown thing was georgia fan of,downtown because its in 220 territories,i didnt know there were 220 territories,now what does that mean territories is,different to nations yes it must be i,dont think there are 20 countries but,territories how many countries are there,how many somebody google it now uh,did you guys watch dante did you know,what danton was now im starting to,think like texas is its own territory,theyre like word territory im gonna,shoot you if you come down,sorry did you watch downton before no my,wife is an addict and by addict i mean,like a crack addict,and,its like a problem we were supposed to,start the show together,and i came to bed one night and she said,ive just watched six of them,and she was like ill,ill tell you ill tell you,what happened,because she wanted to see the seventh,and she didnt want to go back to the,first,you know and so shes done the whole,thing and and im and im on my own so i,will watch downton abbey because i love,you but uh im gonna have to find time,somehow to do that raising four kids,have you ever seen it bill,thompson abbey no,i never have but im just slow i have a,lot of uh like im really slow cleaning,up my room and getting dressed and,everything so i miss these shows but i,really look forward to getting like a,serious flu or something like,that maybe ill get the entire set and,watch the whole thing because he seems,like the greatest guy,he seems like a great guy its a very,its a very good show you know what its,one of those weird things its too,convincing like im sort of on the,fringes of this industry i meet actors,on the show but when i see the downtown,cast on a red carpet and theres its,the servants i always think oh isnt,that lovely,look at that look its mrs packmore she,borrowed a dress,oh did they give him the morning off did,they get there,was he there going wheres my kedgeree,but you have a love hate thing dont you,with it no i love it and i watch it all,the time but a bit like a relationship,with crack you know i hate it too,well you know its killing you,let me let me ask you is he like the,grand hes the lord of the lord but what,you need to know bill is lord grantham,and i think this is fair is always wrong,well there you go there you go right,there,yeah thats uh he is though isnt he you,must get annoyed,when you know when your name comes out,of a dogs ass in the titles you know,you know youre in for a bad ride,no because lady simple no you killed her,blood on your hands no i didnt kill,someone no i didnt sorry i did timeout,[Music],dr clarkson okay yeah up to then dont,tell me i havent seen the show,up to that point on the show we call him,doctor death on set because every,decision he makes was terrible yes so,there is some sense in in my character,calling in some outside advice it,happens to be possibly the wrong one and,you know she wants out of her contract,so she dies,wow if youre if youre watching in one,of the 220 territories that hasnt got,to that point in the story yet um hey,maybe she gets better,but i i wouldnt join the matthew,crawley fan club either,i wouldnt invest in that,im going to repeat excuse me,[Music],i know,i know but i said only i was allowed to,wear sort of deep red,i know well well youre sacked,beautifully dark nice deal seamless no,one will notice,thanks for sending the memo to everybody,but me well yeah that is all doesnt it,yeah its weird ive never seen this,color and now i see it on three men at,once,just,have a go at mat night,and now from the sublime to the,ridiculous uh because uh you bonneville,what was it hugh barnville no no no no,you was a lovely man ebola zombie man,but i just want to refer back to a,television appearance that you,bonneville made a couple of weeks ago uh,he was on a program called top gear its,very oh i love that,he was on top getter,driving thats the greatest show now,from top gear no we dont have a clip,but we do have a bizarre his appearance,caused quite the reaction uh here he is,on top of you now a lot of people were,focused on the jumper,a lot of the other bugs in the jumper,but more even more people were concerned,why,why are you wearing lipstick on top,well im intrigued i im here to say,that i was not wearing lipstick come on,it was,cold because they on top of here they,say bring two sets of clothes youre,gonna be boiling hot in the car,and youre gonna be freezing cold in the,studio and i thought boiling hot in the,car its a cold day in wherever we are,february its not going to be like that,at all i was roasting because youre,exerting so much so adrenaline and a,sweat because youre in a well,well just right now your i was so obsessed with gilded age,that i was like yeah its better well is,it well yeah which is better gilded age,its more fabulous because theres like,it moves fabulous bunts around what,season of downton abbey are you on mid,season two okay youre still in the,golden age yes where its like,you know everyone is is fun and its,exciting and whatever i have heard that,unfortunately it does go downhill but,yeah so i was like oh i want more gilded,age well there isnt any yet so ill go,well go watch downton abbey yeah loving,it yes for the same obvious reasons that,i loved the movie like it all just makes,sense you know i get it i get the vibe,this movie though i loved i thought it,was better than the first one i really,liked it i thought it was not as good as,the first one i dont understand that um,i think okay heres heres why okay okay,any forward momentum,with characters that happens in downton,abbey they have to reset every time they,do a new thing sure the abbey is like,the bermuda,and its just like something about it,where im just like theyre still there,guys theyre still there its like when,you get to like the later seasons of the,office and youre like i thought they,were gonna get out god theyre still,there that is a good point where youre,like wait its been decades now decades,and i get it when people are were in,service of course they like you know,went their whole lives or whatever but,just every single character every time,they take one step forward,and its two steps back you would think,that maybe some of these people might,have moved elsewhere or done something,else here what daisys up to she can she,can leave right thats fine with me im,okay with it because then they have to,introduce new characters so its,interesting right who also could never,leave well but its like wouldnt that,make it more fun if it was like the the,ever-changing bit is whos downstairs,and like you got the people that are,not bates um,with mr carson mr carsons like oh he,finally retired and was gonna live the,life of oh you have to come back and be,the butler for plot reasons like its,just a little bit i thought that was the,first one,they did again in this one oh right,because we were taking him with us to,france were tired multiple times and,theyre like you must come back we have,to have no one can show it but you i,mean they just want to include them in,the movie of course im just saying its,just its like a little bit like okay,but it was very cute and fun and they,they um sampled our pottery smash,which was wild wild,i do hope that was a prop um i think,what was fun about this was one we got,out a little bit you know yes we got to,the french,french riviera yeah um this whole silly,story you know uh we dont have to go,too much into the plot of it all but i,felt like the movie really got the tone,where theyre like okay we know why,everyone likes downton abbey sure like,its the same reason my mom and i are,currently binging hotel portofino oh,lovely okay no its,good enough the costumes,the location right the italy uh coast,yes porn yes theres a rough wig,and they they keep trying to hide it,with scarves and hats and it makes it,worse oh no,it almost ruins the show,but it doesnt okay great but if you,like it i think they actually filmed it,in spain or croatia or something but,its italy sure italy porn love it uh,1920s clothes great you know there is a,reason i watch these things and i,understand that and i didnt dislike,this movie i just thought i was like oh,my god let them leave well theyre being,held captive in the basement let them,leave thats really nice i just love it,just a little bit no i loved it i like i,just okay heres a question yes cause,very excited that thomas is gonna go be,his fuck butler yeah excited for him and,dominic or whatever right yeah oh im,yeah just like oh that was time to go,west wasnt it or was it duke scott no i,think it was dominique i think youre,right i dont know they i was like oh,that guy looks familiar they conflate,but i think its dominique questions,i love that thomas is like im gonna go,be free go to hollywood youre a fuck,butler and were gonna have its gonna,be great and then we dont have to have,him as a character anymore oh no but i,love thomas hes my favorite what stuff,actually happens well that is true but,hes so obnoxious stuff actually happens,when thomas is around and he just looks,like 25 percent like crisp and glover,and so im like,yes um but heres a question if they,made another movie uh-huh theyre,bringing thomas back right he cant,escape well he must come back to the,abbey there must be like theres gonna,theyre gonna find something thatll be,somehow well go on a hollywood,adventure wont that be fun well i like,it i like or dont get me wrong im,gonna keep watching them right of course,never gonna stop watching them right,poor day maggie yes theyre you know,theyre writing was on her wall yeah,shes still currently like,filming but um yes that was all very,like tower it was pretty much it was,pretty damaging theater was uh,sobbing im not gonna lie,you know they couldnt get matthew good,because he was busy filming i dont know,season three of discovery witches he,wasnt in the other one either i thought,he showed up for like two seconds at the,end to be like hey im back,i didnt even know he was still around i,thought he was just done but she kept,being like hes driving hes not going,to make it to the european i dont know,he got out i dont know how he i dont,know how he did he got out,you know what i will say i was just,thinking about because like the vibes in,this theater were really good,and my new litmus test to see if its,like a good theater vibe is if everyone,claps and cheers when nicole kidman,shows up,we come here to laugh i honestly dont,know if shes saying to love or to laugh,we come to amc theaters to laugh to cry,we coming to love,maybe its um to cry whats that called,were you a portmanteau well for you to,love love laugh yeah love,i dont know laugh to laugh i love you i,love you i love you love is is,too weak a word for where i i love you,yeah you know i love you i i love you to,actually make me laugh and i love you i,love that i love that,yeah there you go solved your problem,are you living a life,this was totally cute yes watch out on a,sunday with your mom absolutely love it,i really like this fully just scratched,the itch you know what i mean im,starting to feel like at the late like,the later seasons of the show when,youre like where theyre running out of,ideas like get me out of here,but i think a golden age of a hollywood,one would be really fun im here for it,um their ages dont make sense the show,started in 1912 and it is currently i,dont know and they have none of them,have aged has there been world war ii,yet no okay they havent quite got there,

if you love period pieces historical,fiction and juicy tv drama meet downton,abbey bridgetons older sister the tv,show is a cult favorite and for many,actors their first big break on tv who,doesnt want to put on their poshest,accent and act for itv but not everyone,can be an iconic character who stays for,the entire run of the show here are,seven stars who left downton abbey and,why first up jessica brown finley,jessica played lady sybil crawley edith,and marys beloved sister on the show,the youngest daughter of the earl and,countess of grantham she is kind,idealistic and lovable very dedicated to,doing good in the world shes married to,tom branson but unfortunately passes,away in season three after giving birth,to their daughter leading to jessica,brown finleys exit from the show she,was the first leading cast member to,leave downton abbey and apparently her,exit was planned right at the beginning,as soon as she was cast she made it,clear that she will leave after three,years understandably so as a young actor,does not want to be limited to a,character and wants to have a variety of,characters and a diverse career about,her leaving she said i didnt want to,fall in my comfort zone too much next ed,spielers ed spielers also known as the,terrifying stephen bonnet on outlander,played jimmy kent who worked as a,footman for downton abbey he starred in,series three four and five of downton,before his character was fired from the,house somewhat of a player the character,is selfish arrogant and rude as seen in,his advances on ivy and mrs hughes the,details of his exit were never made,public but apparently he left the show,for another role in a big-budget british,tv drama although spielers chose not to,return for the movie because of other,commitments he says that downton abbey,was an amazing gig for him hes been,cast in prominent roles after his,departure from the show along with alice,in wonderland through the looking glass,starring johnny depp and helena bonham,carter now we have amy newton amy newton,played the character of ethel parks on,downton abbey the poor housemate who was,really struggling during her time on the,show she had an affair with a soldier,convalescing at downton during series 2,leaving her pregnant and fired tragedies,you never want to happen side by side,she struggles to raise her son and has,to turn to prostitution to make ends,meet but eventually gets a clean slate,as she begins working as a housemaid,near her son who is raised by his,wealthy grandparents amy newton,originally left the show after series 2,but returned action,[Music],why do you think he gave you the villa,that is where the mystery resides then,were off to the riviera and with any,luck wed miss the whole of marys,frightful film,i do hope that was a prop lets be,honest here if youre not already a fan,of downton abbey you probably arent,going to be watching downton abbey a new,era exactly and youre probably also,wondering right now why youd watch a,review of a movie you arent even going,to see well i love a mystery i cant,answer that for you but i can help you,catch up on the six seasons of downton,that originally aired between 2010 and,2015 and became one of the most watched,shows on the planet here are the,highlights set to some appropriately,british music,[Music],okay now weve got that out of the way,we can talk about downton on the big,screen show creator julian fellowes who,won an oscar back in 2001 for riding,gosford park already gave us a downton,movie in 2019 which did pretty well at,the box office remember to pray for us,ill put in a word it was set in 1927,yes just like the band,[Music],a few years after the events of the,series finale,that movie revolved around king george v,coming to downton and an assassination,attempt on his life,not only was this unusually exciting for,downton abbey which is a famously gentle,period drama it also didnt make a lot,of sense in the movie because killing,the king was treated with the same level,of drama as mrs patmore spilling,raspberry cooley on the crisp white,shirt of the kings butler im going to,have to sit down thankfully the sequel,gets back to what downton does best low,stakes melodrama that juxtaposes the,trials and tribulations of the,aristocratic crawley family with that of,the servants who look after them this,time around we have two major storylines,to follow the first involves the,mysterious and surprisingly salacious,past of fan favorite violet who is of,course played by the one and only maggie,smith do,sit down ive come into possession of a,villa it turns out the dowager countess,of grantham had a dalliance with a,frenchman back in the day and hes now,kicked the bucket and left her a fancy,villa in the south of france what fella,start at the beginning shes far too old,to claim it herself so sends her son the,lord grantham played by hugh bonneville,to go check it out but the mission,wouldnt be complete without his trusty,butler mr carson which also provides,some classic englishman abroad humor the,british are coming meanwhile back at,downton a film crew has arrived to shoot,a silent movie a moving picture a,downtrend,famous one which might seem like a tacky,thing for the crawlies to allow but the,family home is literally falling apart,and the money on offer from the,production is desperately needed to pay,for repairs so it falls to lady mary who,is played by michelle dockery to,chaperone these vulgar actors and make,sure they dont nick the silverware you,steer ahead,youre the captain now pretty sure the,word meta wasnt invented back in 1928,but this film within the film has some,fun meta moments action,cut cut sorry fans of the show will like,this movie better than the first one but,thats not saying an awful lot downton,abbey a new era gets two and a half,stars,[Music],you

as i told a friend of ours this is where,fan service and tea service collide,let us now return to downton abbey and,also parts of the south of france in the,sequel,which is called downton abbey a new era,theres anything really new,why do you think he gave you the villa,that is where the mystery resides then,theyre off to the riviera and with any,luck wed miss the whole of marys,frightful film,i do hope that was a prop,[Music],um,okay yeah so its 1929 question mark,they never really say but were meant to,assume that some time has lapsed since,the last movie because the last movie,ended with lady edith pregnant again and,now she has a kid and we open with the,wedding of,um,uh the former chauffeur and if you want,character names for me come on tom,branson and lucy,uh anyway so they they were engaged to,the end the last movie we opened this,movie with them marrying um,two main story lines unfolding here one,um,uh the dowager countess realizes oops i,have a villa in the south of france that,i thought was a joke but no it turns out,i really own it and uh the guy who left,it to me died and so now i want to make,sure that it goes to to young sibby so,that she has some kind of inheritance,because shes the only one of her,grandchildren that isnt directly,lineage,the whole thing um,so this means that everybody has to go,investigate this so off goes lord,grantham and cora,and uh carson for some reason and,uh,and and and tom and lucy and uh um,anyway just because,and then the ones who then lady mary,stays back at home because a film,company,is going to rent the house to shoot a,silent picture which of course everyone,is aghast about but the roof is leaking,and they could use the money so they say,yes um and then of course midway through,shoot it turns out oops talkies have,taken over and so the leading lady whos,your basic lena lamont from singing in,the rain cannot,speak as classily as she looks so in,comes uh lady mary to the rescue as her,dubber um the staff is all excited about,the movie theyve got their own,going on um,uh uh you know the the the leading man,of the movie is making eyes of the gay,butler uh you know its just it look,theres a lot of beautiful property and,tea sets and tweed and gowns and thats,why youre here right,and thats thats what you get in,downton abbey in new era and is that,enough though like as a fan did you feel,satisfied by this i felt sated by it all,i mean there were moments where i was,like,what like just like the stuff that just,outright makes zero sense can you say,without spoiling it well okay for,example um carson is horrified horrified,horrified that this film company is,going to come shoot it down and oh its,the end of everything and where are our,standards and thats part of why they,ship him off in the party to france but,then by the end of the movie they,somehow talk him into being an extra,you know,so just stuff like that where like,people will make a big stand about,something theyll be like hey sure,whatever you know just were just gonna,roll along with this um you know hugh,dancy plays the director of the movie,and he and lady mary have kind of a,thing although shes married to matthew,good whos not even in this movie uh,because hes busy being robert evans,exactly but she keeps getting telegrams,from him you know um,look if you watch the show when you,watch the first movie and you just want,another taste of this,nonsense then you get two plus hours of,it um,you are somebody who didnt watch the,show and kind of came in cold for the,first movie are you still sort of like,what is the big deal here no i i get the,allure of the escape i absolutely do and,like the the sets and the costumes were,exquisite and it hearkens to this time,that like in theory should clang like,the,the celebration of the aristocracy,like in this economy like it should,claim well its the fantasy of how its,the fantasy of how well they treat the,staff which is what makes it you dont,want to send them all to the guillotine,whereas in real life im sure they were,all they would have been right,and the fact that the actress the one,who talks like this like shes so rude,to the staff and like that we will not,have that here right and so like the,fact that civility reigns over,everything is like a noble aspiration,its a nice idea right so there there is,that um do i get it i guess so and a lot,of the allure of it of course is maggie,smith just,and being there i wanted like the maggie,smith and natalie bai showdown,that is a missed opportunity right yes,you know we get natalie by as the the,widow of the the villa owner who is not,happy about these british interlopers,and wanting to sue them,and shes you know this great regal,force of cinema and uh youre right i,think not not having any scenes where,where she and maggie smith could face,off is that thats that,what were you thinking julian fellows,that was right there i can see how if,youre deeply invested in this movie,or in this series rather that there are,things in the movie that will be moving,to you where i felt like okay all right,this is all kind of like superficial and,whatever and im im unmoved by it but,im sufficiently transported for a,little while and you know,mr carson is a treat of course and his,voice is amazing and,i i enjoy the whole like knowing very,self-aware knowing,trashing of,the vulgarity of cinema,packed as a soda,theyre going to steal the spoons,yeah so a lot of thats funny because of,course its like actors making fun of,themselves and all that but you know,its fine i think if you are a fan you,will enjoy it i would like more for the,gay butler i would like more something,more substantial for the gay butler but,i guess like if were keeping with a,certain,kind of,remove,you know,aesthetically tonally you cant get,there exactly its not like a its not,like the straight people are like you,know like mad in this movie in,fact theres you know david was dave was,asking me about like why is there no,horniness in this movie when season one,of this show like lady mary has has like,a one-night stand with a guy who dies,and lord grantham is like you know,getting it on with one of the staff,members and like the this is its right,its pretty much chased all around so,why why would the the gay butler get any,more action than that and also i think,they are trying to be honest of like,even though everybody around him is,fairly open-minded and says,compassionate things about you know they,want happiness for him blah blah it is,the 1920s in england and lets not,pretend that that was any kind of like,easy time to,to be a gay guy so you know i think,theyre theyre trying to,as much as fantasy as this is they have,to acknowledge a little bit of that,reality so i you know i i was i was okay,with that uh this is not bridgeton by,the way where everything is,sexy and and hot and raunchy like,yeah this is,a as i as i told a friend of ours this,is where fan service and tea service,collide,but you know if youre a fan you will be,serviced well i look forward to uh next,week when we do the bobs burgers movie,places yeah which i know a ton about,because its like nicks favorite show,and ive watched a ton of it with him,and you were not quite so overwhelmed i,dont think because you werent as you,know well yeah i went i went in cold so,i i kind of had the same you know yes,well our numbers arent actually that,far off im seeing six i said seven i i,had a good time even though i was,periodically just coming,okay movie sure whatever,so downton abbey in new era is only in,theaters correct that is correct
