[Music],we didnt need a shes all that remake,its been a while since weve reviewed,something but netflixs latest project,was impossible to ignore a,gender-swapped remake of the 1999 film,shes all that which itself was a,contemporary adaptation of the 1913 play,pygmalion hes all that stars tick,talker turned singer turned actress,addison ray in the lead role of paget,sawyer and tanner buchanan as the loser,she takes under her wing,in todays video were going to be,taking a deep dive into hes all that,the kind of good the bad and the plain,old awful,just as a disclaimer not only is this a,pretty negative review itll also spoil,the entire movie so stop watching now if,thats something youre concerned about,and before you start writing your hate,comments i want to preface this by,saying that im not disparaging the work,of anyone involved on this project,making a movie is very difficult but i,dont see the harm in wanting better and,if i can come up with some very simple,solutions that could have made this,movie better hollywood should have been,able to as well,anyway lets get into it,lets start by taking a look at the,original film shes all that from 1999,now considered a teen classic for those,of you who havent seen it before or,just need a brief refresher the films,plot goes as such,zack is the big man on campus hes hot,hes rich hes the student body,president the soccer team star player,and hes dating the schools queen bee,his life is perfect or so he thinks,after returning from spring break mere,weeks before prom and their graduation,his girlfriend taylor vaughn dumps him,having cheated on him with reality tv,star brock hudson played by the always,effervescent matthew lillard zack,attempts to salvage his pride by,insisting that taylor is replaceable and,her popularity could be easily,replicated by any other girl given the,opportunity his friend dean disagrees,and the boys make a bet that zack has to,turn the unpopular laney boggs into prom,queen in only a few weeks zack attempts,to befriend lainey but she is,immediately put off by him and ignores,his advances something hes downright,confused by as hes used to getting his,way he eventually manages to get her to,give him a chance but she continues to,resist his charms they hang out on a few,other occasions slowly learning more,about one another and zack is able to,convince her to go to a party at his,friends house and with the help of his,little sister we get one of the most,iconic makeover transformation sequences,of all time,may i present the new,not improved but different,laney box,although the evening begins on a high,note the night takes a turn after laney,is humiliated by the vengeful tailor,with her new look lainey becomes popular,overnight threatening taylors chances,of prom queen and drawing the attention,of dean much to zach chagrin,zach and laney have grown closer during,this time but in a vindictive move dean,deliberately reveals the bet to laney,my bet,am i a bet am i a [ __ ] bet,angered she and zach drift apart and she,winds up going to the prom with dean,whose plan is to sleep with her and then,ditch her attempting to stop this from,happening zach goes to lainis house and,the two reconcile officially becoming a,couple,the film ends at graduation where zach,arrives naked per the rules of the bet,strategically covering his privates with,a soccer ball which he throws at laney,in a show of affection,ill be honest and say that shes all,that isnt my favorite teen flick the,cast who are all instantly recognizable,today were in very early stages of their,careers at the time of filming and as,such their acting abilities are,noticeably lacking resulting in a lot of,lines sounding stilted and forced with,many jokes completely failing to land,however theres no denying that the film,is enjoyable to watch because of the,chemistry between the two leads plus,freddy prince jr is an absolute perfect,choice for zack,the premise of the film is beyond,predictable weve seen the whole popular,person falls in love with the unpopular,person trope dozens of times and,unfortunately shes all that doesnt add,much to it in fact it almost killed the,trope in its entirety,the film served as a major inspiration,for the 2001 parody film not another,teen movie which poked fun at numerous,aspects of the premise specifically the,fact that a pair of overalls and glasses,isnt enough to make an actress look,unattractive,no no no anyone but her not cheney,briggs,guys shes got glasses and a ponytail oh,look at that shes got paint on her,overalls what is that guys theres no,way she could be prom queen,[Music],thats it,i did it im a miracle worker,id say that 2003s love dont cost a,thing which itself is a remake of 1987s,cant buy me love is a far superior film,with a similar concept,although it admittedly doesnt include,the bet storyline and when it comes to,modern day adaptations of decades-old,content clueless 10 things i hate about,you and cruel intentions pulled it off,way better with shes all that barely,having any similarities to pygmalion,apart from the makeover essentially,losing the heart of an otherwise very,touching story,i can understand why shes all that is,considered a teen classic but if you,remove nostalgia from the equation its,adequate at best so the choice to remake,it in the first place was,interesting,the 2021 film follows in the footsteps,of the original almost to a fault and,the small changes it does make either,serve no purpose or actively make it,worse the film starts off by introducing,us to paget sawyer a tick-tock beauty,influencer with nearly a million,followers who spends a supposedly,cringe-worthy amount of time on her,phone because if its set in the 2020s,and stars teens that needs to be a huge,part of the plot as part of her brand,image padgett pretends that shes more,well-off than she really is with her,room being meticulously decorated in,comparison to the rest of the house and,even going as far as to lie to her,friends that she lives in a fancier,building paget is currently dating,jordan a similarly online famous teen,with a justin bieber-esque image and,music style one day she visits him on,set and discovers that hes cheating on,her something that is streamed live to,her hundreds of thousands of followers,resulting in viral backlash that results,in her losing a sponsorship something,she needs in order to pay for college,hoping to rebuild her online reputation,padgett decides to make over a boy at,school in the hopes of creating a new,and improved version of jordan which,results in her making a similar bet as,the first film cameron queller,supposedly the schools most unpopular,boy is chosen as her project and she,immediately sets out to befriend him,they have a rocky start but after a few,hangout sessions together they begin,developing feelings for one another with,the film attempting to push the,narrative that they have more to them,than meets the eye,one of padgetts friends alden hosts a,great gatsby-inspired birthday bash,which paget invites cameron to but not,before giving him a new haircut and one,of the fakest shaves in cinematic,history,at the party cameron gets in a fight,with jordan which he actually winds up,winning but he still storms off in a,huff afterwards,he and padgett managed to make up and,cameron shows her his photography which,hes previously never shown to anyone,britta perry attempts to capture the,wars sublime indignities on film,unfortunately for brita and millions of,photographers like her just because,something is in black and white doesnt,mean its good at a school car wash,cameron tries to ask padgett to prom but,this goes south after alden reveals that,hes just a bet resulting in the two,having a falling out so i was a bet no,no i was a [ __ ] bet,padgett decides to go to prom anyway and,she winds up winning the crown only to,make a speech in front of the entire,school about how shes been hiding her,true self and prioritizing the wrong,things after the speech is finished

to,disappear except for her it would be,improvement of course this trailer for,hes the man i have sung its praises,you probably saw my reaction on ooga,booga my second channel that seemingly,only some of you know about i like to,keep it a secret you know its just like,an inside thing i dont want to shout,from the rooftops its not about getting,the most people over there its just,about its about herself and her mother by doing,sponsorships endorsing products mostly,from this company bunny venom thats,like her main sponsor in fact the very,first thing she does in the movie is,endorse one of bunny venoms products,without disclosing that they sponsored,her these bunny venom revival eye,patches are always my fave for eye puff,so a little shady but you know what get,the bag nonetheless get get that bag and,go off,queen at first i was gonna say like,right away that makes this movie like,not believable because its like the,writers of the the movie i guess dont,even know how sponsorships the same thing,,except gender-swapped and made to reflect the…,Relevant and sad times we live in.,So, the protagonist and mega  Instagram influencer Padgett Sawyer,,takes on the case of transforming,the unpopular artistic anti-social  media nihilist Cameron Kweller,into the hottest boy in school as part of a bet she makes with her friend.,And, of course because this is a 2020s rom-com,,Padgett and Cameron end up falling for each other too.,I have a lot of problems with the makeover trope,,which I did an entire dedicated video to a couple months ago,,so Id give that a watch if you want to hear me go more in depth about it,,because Im not going to for this video.,Just in terms of makeovers on guys, because I didnt cover that in the last video,,I think its, in general, less insidious,,because, a lot of the times. or at least in the purposes of this movie,,in Hes All That, he doesnt get like, a major makeover, you know?,They just cut his hair and he gets new clothes,,whereas I feel like, makeovers for women in these,90s and early 2000s movies is quite transformative.,Like, they straighten their naturally curly hair,,they put on makeup,,they pluck their eyebrows,,they get bikini waxes…,Its a lot more invasive,and its a lot more about changing their natural features.,I still think its bad to change  what youre comfortable with,to please your partner, tired of the makeover transformation concept.,The makeover transformation is,,literally, her getting a haircut and taking off her glasses.,Like, they tried to make us think she wasnt beautiful in the before scenes;,but, honestly, I thought she was cute the whole time.,With this attitude towards the original,,I didnt have particularly high  expectations for Hes All That.,And even though the director was the same  director as the one for Mean Girls,,and, my personal favorite, Freaky Friday,,I still had a sense that  this movie Hes All That,,was more of like, a cash grab movie, using Addison Raes star power,over anything else.,Like, lets be honest here:,The girl is no Lindsay Lohan.,I feel like, she was really just cast for her name.,And yes, that comes off a little  shadier than I mean it to,,because I dont know anything about Addison Rae!,I learned about her for the  first time like, this year.,I watched the Seven Days,  Seven Looks video in Vogue,that she was invited to do,and using that video as reference, the character she plays is just herself.,- Hey, Vogue, its Addison Rae!,And Im gonna show you what I wear in a week!,- Its me, Padgett Head to Toe here,,where we talk about makeovers,,self-improvement and how to become the most spectacular you.,So, with that information,,the movie kind of just felt like a  PR stunt to increase her likability.,Which, you know, whoever is her manager, theyre definitely working overtime!,I also thought they were trying  to do a little bit of a…,Progressive spin!,Because the old movie has been criticized a lot  ,for being patriarchal and sexist and  carrying these like, negative themes,and they were probably in the writing  room looking for another reboot to make,and just being like:,”Oh, wait a minute.,”What if we just made it the guy who needed the makeover.,”Thats kind of feminism, isnt it?”,Its not.,So lets get started by comparing  how these two movies differ,,because…,You know, even though I said I  didnt like either of the movies,,I thought Shes All That was the lesser of two evils.,I was, at least, entertained by Shes All That.,I thought it was enjoyable.,I thought it was a “product of its time”.,It was just something that I, personally, didnt really enjoy watching in 2021,and being the big age that I am now.,But, for Hes All That…,Theres just… Theres just a lot.,Okay, lets get started!,In Hes All That, the reason why Padgett wants a new boyfriend,is because she lost a ton of followers in, probably,,the most unrealistic cancelling story Ive ever heard!,So, the writers were trying to convince us that,,in the year of 2021,,the Internet sympathized with her ex-boyfriend Jordan,,who was caught on Instagram Live, cheating on her in real time,,because she reacted by crying and throwing donut holes at him.,And rather than her followers supporting her.,And, lets remember, if you follow someone on social media,,more than likely, you actually favor them!,You like them to a certain and,alleged singer addison ray and i will be,completely honest i have no idea who she,is no shade to her i recognize the name,because i am obviously on social media,but i dont think ive ever seen a tick,tock that shes in because thats,clearly not the content that would be,shared with me or that id be seeking,out im pretty sure shes one of the,ones who blew up doing all the lip,syncing and the dancing so good for her,what has been going on in small town,bars for decades is now turning people,into like multi-millionaires so when,they first announced this movie ill be,honest i clowned a bit or maybe a lot i,think the original rumor was that this,whole movie was going to be loaded with,tick tockers which just absolutely would,have been a recipe for disaster but i,think addisons actually the only one,and then i realized that this was being,directed by mark waters who may not have,a perfect track record in the film world,but he is the director behind two of my,all-time favorite movies freaky friday,and mean girls and it was written by the,same guy who did the original and while,i clowned i wont pretend to be morally,outraged that they dare touch this teen,classic because while i enjoy shes all,that its not really in the top of the,genre that its in even when you just,narrow it down to other movies that were,released in 1999 but something that does,bring back those late 90s other movies of the time it just,doesnt stack up 10 things i hate about,you did the bet aspect better yes i,realized that that is a modern retelling,of the taming of the shrew but still,its an amazing movie with great,performances that gut punches me every,single time i watch it clueless does the,makeover and shallow queen bee story,better but i will say that shes all,that has like a really nice moment,around the makeover where anna paquins,character is like uh presenting the new,not improved but different,laney box i like that thats a nice,touch american pie covers the bet,college choice struggles celebrity,musician cameos and the party stuff,better leaving shes all that as the,movie that has a really great all-star,cast some nice moments some funny bits,but it just feels more cookie-cutter,theres just nothing about it that,really stands out especially when you,compare to those other 90s teen classics,its something that ill easily pop on,while im working but if i had to pick a,movie to sit and watch in that genre,that will never be my first choice so i,wasnt going into this worried that they,tarnished the legacy of the original but,i did expect this one to be trash so i,was pleasantly surprised when this,wasnt complete trash im not saying,its amazing by any means im probably,never gonna watch it again after i,finish making this video i would,probably give it a two maybe a 2.5 at,most so maybe thats still being a,little bit generous but i do feel like,the target demographics are really going,to enjoy this and like if youre like a,tick tock dancer fan youll probably,have a good time but i also found that,it hit a few of the emotional aspects,better than the original in the original,laneys mom has passed away so shes,kind of just been put in this position,where shes kind of taking care of her,dad and her brother but it doesnt,really like linger on any of that which,is fine i just think they could have,like dabbled in there a little bit more,its like in twilight when they just,gloss over the fact that bella was,basically taking care of her mom for her,entire life because she couldnt,remember to like pay bills or like cook,food like super shitty but its like oh,renees just young at heart speaking of,though im sorry i had to do what i,always had to talk about twilight but i,also have this amazing shirt today so,like i had to do it this is the skin of,a killer bella obviously i prefer the,original but this one actually wasnt a,total dumpster fire like its pretty,cute its know the half of it in terms,of netflix coming of age stories but it,is nowhere near the words i just,remembered sarah purchases a loser holy,[ __ ] this mainly just kind of vibes as,like a disney channel original movie,its not full disney but it also just,never gets as edgy as like your classic,90s teen movie which is a bummer because,thats actually one of my personal,favorite genres of film so i would have,loved something that had that kind of,vibe its mostly just goofy as hell like,it doesnt seem to have the biggest,budget a lot of the dialogue is rough,both from how it was delivered and how,it was written but lets get into it we,obviously start off with addisons,character paget at first i thought it,was pageant which i felt was a little,bit too on the nose but its paget which,is apparently in the family of paige,neat and she starts off in her very,bright very pink room getting all done,up before jumping back into bed to,pretend like she just woke up for her,tick tock live as the influencers do,because shes specifically a makeover,influencer so she always has to be on,top for him even when shes pointing out,that she didnt get enough sleep the,night before and has to do all these,things like make herself look better,shes already like halfway to a full,routine because thats the brand shes,selling the world,its probably better than my brand,nah screw it this is awesome so i tend,to love movies that incorporate social,media because i find some of them to be,like very interesting or they at least,try to do things in interesting ways but,sadly this is not one of those cases i,actually find that to be the weakest,aspect even though it is like the basis,for everything going on in this movie is,her social media prowess but it also,just seems like they dont understand it,like shes literally doing nothing,special on a live stream and her,following is just shooting up shooting,up shooting up and even though it does,end up making like a larger statement,about how people can get like so,addicted to social media and how it can,like dictate aspects of your life i,never really feel like im fully in that,world maybe its because ive just seen,things that handle it better even if,they handle it like very differently say,what you will about spree but the way,they incorporate social media and the,culture of it into that movie was just,handled so well in my opinion visually,and just thematically this just comes,across feeling like its weird when you,have people that like are that lifestyle,trying to like make a comment on that,lifestyle but it means to all the glam,of her room her life may not be as,perfect as it initially seemed her mom,is a nurse she lives in a much smaller,house than shes letti
