One Mans Opinion Episode 73: Macbeth on Broadway

passion fury destiny despair rage murder, and vengeance,so many things associated with william, shakespeares violent and bloody macbeth, yeah i said it what youre gonna do,about it,but lo and behold director sam gold did, something ive never seen done before, with this play he found the humor,[Music],[Applause],[Music],hello and welcome to episode 73 of one, mans opinion where i review, professional theater in new york and, connecticut today i am reviewing the, broadway revival of william, shakespeares macbeth directed by sam, gold and starring daniel craig as the, titular scottish lord and ruth nega as,lady macbeth currently at the longacre, theatre at 220 west 48th street in new, york running through july 10th macbeth, about a scottish lord, played by craig who with the, encouragement of his wife nega usurps, the throne of king duncan played by paul, lazar by murdering him in their home, after their interpretation of prophecies,by a band of witches assures their, rightful taking of the throne it is oft, considered shakespeares bloodiest play, and it may very well be though titus, andronicus has a strong argument, and yes golds version in spite of its,stripped-down design with minimal set, pieces is bloody, very bloody with people being hung, upside down and exsanguinated gutted and, disemboweled, but, funny, yes in the right moments there are well, planned laughs in golds direction its,a wonder that anyone looks beyond all,the blood and guts for the funny moments, but its great that he was able to,successfully do so without diminishing, the integrity of the drama within much,of the credit also goes to craig who, doesnt shy away from macbeths, vulnerabilities and his flippant, attitude, toward other members of his court most, notably michael patrick thornton as,lennox and danny wollihan as satan, who both at times provide comic relief,to the play, gold also created a couple interludes, not in the original play where the cast, members particularly michael patrick, thornton have a couple laughs with the, audience some purists wont like it and, thats understandable but i didnt mind,it it allowed for a breather for the, audience and probably allowed deck crew,to clean up blood on the stage behind a,curtain while its down, but whats best about craigs, performance is that he looks like he has,a brutal duality struggling within him, with an almost bipolar quality, resting on top of it in one scene hell, march on stage with the confident, bravado of one who is ready to be king, while the next scene he cowers in the, shadows filled with despair unsure of,any of his life choices and afraid of,where his life choices will lead, its a splendid performance with, detailed nuance ruth nega also gives a,great performance as lady macbeth uh her, descent into madness and the fifth act,is delightfully disturbing her and craig, let their respective characters feed off,of each others penchant for greed and, power its something where if neither of,them had been together neither would, have instigated such a bloody story but, their animalistic passion for each other, feeds each others motivations at least, until things run out of their control, much credit must go to che allyande, the understudy for macduff who came on,the day after opening to cover for, grantham coleman the night i was in,attendance he gives a powerhouse, performance especially in the latter, half of the play when macbeth turns on,his family in order to solidify his, position of power and it was great to,hear not only the audience support him,but the cast cheer him on after the, final curtain call,if youve never seen a shakespearean, play macbeth is a hard one to watch for, your first time out the subject matter,is dark and morbid and it is brutally, violent i would suggest reading an,annotated copy of the play before seeing,it to have a better grasp of the, language and what is being said golds, direction and the performance of the, cast will easily help with navigating, you through the piece, well, shakespeare fans may be taken aback at,the moments of flippancy, but i think it all comes together quite, well considering how old the text is at,this point to stage a shakespearean play,a director must be clear in purpose and, intent and gold gives us clear vision, into the murky mirror of madness that is,macbeth, but i am only one mans opinion so be,sure to leave yours in the comments, below if youd like to see macbeth ill, leave a link in the description you can, support my channel by liking sharing and, subscribing and click the notification, bell to be alerted to future reviews my,next review will be potus on broadway, thank you for watching and i will see,you at the theater,[Music],[Applause],[Music],you

Word of Mouth Review: Macbeth

hi Im Steve Im Ellen and Im Julie and, youre watching word of mouth if it were, done when tis done then twere well it,were done quickly if the assassination, could trammel up the consequence and, catch with his surcease success that put, this blow might better be all in the end,all here but here upon this bank and, shoal of time we jumped the life to come, today we saw the Scottish play I saw the,Macbeth although I dont think Im,supposed to say the name of the show I,think quite a while since I I taught me,that and in fact when the play first, began I thought you should have looked,at my notes from years ago just to,remind myself because Ive been distant, from the flat for so long but it comes, back I remembered that you know certain, things about it like I knew that he you, know finds the witches and that they, tell him that hes going to be king and, then his wife gets excited and she, encourages him to you know facilitate, that process and and then I know that he,goes back and that she goes crazy and, thats about all I remembered when, reviewing a Shakespearean play youre, really not reviewing the play youre, reviewing the production because lets, face it you know better people than I,have have critiqued Shakespeare his work, stands for itself this particular show, takes place in a time which is unknown,in a place which is unknown and but the, dialogue is all its all Shakespeare, its a modernized version of the, original its a complete horror play, very dark very creepy and the three, women who play the witches her, traditional like their hats which we,hangs and whatnot but they were you sort,of really creepy institutionalized marms, with their, hats in their evil stares and it was, awesome I found it initially very, jarring you know visually it was it was, almost an assault as well as orally but,as I went further and further into the, play I became kind of drawn into this, interpretation and by the end found it,to be highly effective and they use, projection on the back to help you, realize that youre in different places, and when people start dying people start, going insane you start to see a lot of,stuff on the background the film filming,in the back correct me if Im wrong but,it looked like it was the Soviet Union, during Stalins time it was that was, that what we were watching there which, kind of reinforced the Stalins regime, was probably one of the most, totalitarian and an evil of all times, and I think that was done to reinforce, how truly maniacal Lisa the Macbeths, were in their ambition to have power Im,not a Trekkie at all and personally I,feel great pity for Patrick Stewart that, once his name is mentioned all anybody, mentions this is rollus what was it,wrong loop somebody or another well, obviously Im not a Trekkie so I dont, know the name but hes a brilliant actor, absolutely brilliant actor he is a one,of the finest actors that I have ever, seen I dont pretend to understand the, entire play Im not an expert on,Shakespeare but I can tell you it was a,dazzling performance by him Caitlyn, would who plays Lady Macbeth she was she,was good I thought she was really good, she definitely used watched her sort of,descent into madness quite well I think, that Cait Fleetwood was was just, marvelous she really subsumed that role, into herself she didnt seem to be,performing a role she seemed to be Lady,Macbeth shes a lot younger than he is I,dont know what how he managed I would, say he probably I dont know how all,Macbeth was in the original play, probably in his 40s or something like, that,Patrick Stewarts not in his 40s hes a,lot older than that and she shes got to,be 20 years younger than him so that was,an interesting thing there he was like, she was like a trophy wife for him I,dont think Ive typecast either role in,terms of age and it was insignificant to,me that there you know is significant, age difference between Patrick Stewart, and Kate Fleetwood he is certainly a,very vigorous and youthful whatever age,he is and it was insignificant to me,very very powerful performances by both,of them it was a a magnificently, powerful show the cast is huge and, theres always different people running, around and theyre all speaking in Old,English and and theyre talking all over, each other and if things are happening, the speech is happening very fast even, though the play is taking a long time, that I was basically completely confused, most of the time about what was, happening and I was relying heavily on,what my knowledge was of the play and,the plot I had no idea what they were, saying I had no idea which character was,who its hard to follow when youre, sitting reading it let alone when its, flying by you with a with an English, accent I would recommend it to people, who are really familiar with the play, macbeth and and who like horror so if,you have a Venn diagram were like that, little sliver where it meets in the, middle I think and maybe has a long, attention span because thats not me so,that little triangle where all those, things intersect if you dont know the, play macbeth as cool as it is i dont, think youre going to really enjoy it as,much well of course i can recommend this, play to former english teachers and, their literate husbands we both loved,it look at the play and its, interpretation I think if youre in high, school and youre studying Macbeth in,English this would be a perfect thing to,say someone who loves drama who isnt, going to think that the drama is,undermined by the theatricality its, somebody who can sit through a,three-hour play and, handle the language but for anyone whos, able to do that I think its dont miss, its a very good change of pace from the, standard Broadway fair your constancy, had left you unattended honest occasion, call us and show us to be watches they, not lost so poorly in your thoughts no,my deed twere best not know myself, course

Why should you read “Macbeth”? – Brendan Pelsue

We dance forever, never die,and never see the dawn,I would describe Sleep,No More as an immersive experience in a giant building, where you are somewhat lost, but, also guided through a story of Macbeth and adaptations of other inspirations, that fill in multiple narratives that happen in the space.,I would describe Sleep No More as being plopped into a movie, and and you get to choose the character that maybe goes off screen, and youre really interested in what that character is going to do.,Maybe you never see them again in the movie,,but in this story you get to choose to follow that character and,and see where theyre where their journey or their journey leads.,My suggestion to anybody coming to, to see the show,,especially if its your first time, is to either see it alone,or to separate from the people that you came with.,We like to say that you can be the hero of your own story in the space, and that you can really take control of whatever narrative you want to follow.,And if you attach too much to another person, you might find that, youre kind of locked into a shared experience, that kind of disallows, you from getting to everything that you might have wanted to see.,Sometimes a character, might go running in a certain direction, and youve just got to go follow them, and somebody else cant keep up with you.,You got to say goodbye and youll always see them at the end.,Or maybe youll run into them at some point in the middle.,But my biggest suggestion is to experience it as solo as possible.,And you just go for the ride.,Theres a lot of scenery to look at, and then at some point, you will stumble upon a character and be able to follow somebody narrative.,I think theres nothing better than splitting up with someone, and then re meeting back up,,you know, during the show in the hotel and being like,,and then and then venturing to the bar and taking your mask off and saying,,What did you see? Oh, I thought I was.,And then having the opportunity to seek out what they saw, you know,,because you have that opportunity to leave and take a break.,I also think having no agenda and just come in following your instincts,is probably the best way to do it, because who,who knows what youre going to find and where that character might lead you.,Or like Amadi said,,the scenery might take you and what dots you can put together for yourself.,I think making up your own story is such a part of this, and the work,is somewhat literal, but also very abstract.,So we give you the opportunity to put the pieces together in your head, and then whatever story you come up with is is the right story.,My name is Carolyn Boyd and Im the director of performance, and production for Sleep No More.,I think Ive always thought about it as very well organized chaos.,You know, everything that goes into the organization, and the running of the show is sort of trying to,mitigate and have a plan for as much as you can control.,But the beauty of it is also that the show is never the same night tonight.,Every different audience brings an entirely different element to the show.,So every night, and I think this is also, sort of the beauty of what keeps people working on the production for so long,is that every single show can be wildly different from the one before.,And its really all geared and what the audience brings to the experience.,We spent the majority of the of the pause, thinking and planning, for how you could possibly come back still inside of the pandemic.,And it was it was about a two year exercise, kind of going through every element of the show.,So many things about this are, more difficult,to control than, you know, a proscenium show, and then there are also some advantages actually to this kind of work, versus a proscenium show in these times.,But the team,we have an amazing team that really went through every single element of the show,,both from the guest experience and the staff members experience.,And weve made lots and lots and lots of small adjustments to the show,,which I think even like a returning fan from before watching it,,probably unless you have a very keen eye, probably wouldnt notice, any of these things because I think holistically, the experience is still, intact and adheres to all the original esthetics of the show.,I think that since the beginning, I think that that mask has provided,a level of anonymity that allows people to be free and feel like sometimes, the freedom is great and sometimes the freedom can push a little too far.,And I think like its its great though that we give the opportunity,to have that freedom that were giving the power back to the audience.,You know, theyre not they dont feel judged,to just watch a scene and then turn and leave.,Like thats their thats their own opinion.,And we dont know who they are.,And I think thats probably, the one of the best things about having anonymity in that in that way.,Mask, I think the mask kind of removes periphery,,which makes the the whole experience more cinematic for you.,Like in terms of lens focus, like everything is so frontal, and you really you really dont have this space for yourself.,And theres something about that that really lasers your focus into, whats happening right in front of you.,I hope that audience I really hope they get lost, and I mean that actually like I hope you get lost in the space, because you will find your way out eventually.,And its fun to get lost in somewhat unfamiliar space, and not know whats going to happen if you turn this corner of that corner.,But I also hope you can find a place to truly escape.,I think thats why we have our own entertainment.,We deal with, with, with dark things.,Breath is a tragedy and theres a lot of dark and even outside Macbeth,,the other influences that we bring in or dark stories that were telling.,But in that same instance, we want you to play, and thats all we want.,You, like the audience, is a part of this.,We dont do this if we dont have an audience so when the audience is here,,we want them to play and enjoy, and be active as much as they want to be,Again, this doesnt exist without the audience.,And so it feels very much like were excited that people get to come back, and be and come through these doors and and yet take away an experience, that hopefully will will stay with them and lasts for them and then want them,to come back.

One Mans Opinion Season 2 Ep. 29: Topdog/Underdog on Broadway review

[Music],[Applause],[Music],thank you, hello and welcome to season two episode,29 of one mans opinion today I am,reviewing the Broadway Revival of Susan,Laurie parkss Top Dog Underdog directed,by Kenny Leon and running through,January 15th at the golden theater at,252 West 45th Street in New York Top Dog,Underdog is the 2002 Pulitzer,prize-winning drama about two brothers, the Elder Lincoln played by Corey,Hawkins and the younger Booth played by,Yaya Abdul Mateen II,set in the here and now the brothers, live together in a small studio, apartment being that Ive lived in a,studio apartment like this in New York, where you have to share the communal, bathroom with everyone on the floor I,immediately Associated the location as,New York City but it doesnt have to be,it could just as easily be any Urban, apartment complex for those of minimal, means our nofo maldonados Scenic Design, for the apartment is perfect its sad,its cramped and you can imagine how the, place smells just by looking at it the, rotating element feels a little, unnecessary its a slight detail that, happens when the curtain dressed as a,sepia-toned American flag which I love,Rises maybe because of the angles of the, stage it doesnt fit right unless it,rotates in after the curtain Rises I,dont know it just feels a little much, regardless its a slight critique of an,overall great look Lincoln used to be a,three-card Monty Hustler but after, another Hustler is shot and killed he,has moved on to work at an arcade where,he dresses up as a white-faced Abraham,Lincoln where he perpetually sits any,mock-up of the box seats in Ford Theater, where guests can play to assassinate him, yeah I dont know where Parks got this, idea and if theres any real analog to,this practice but for the sake of the, play this exists Booth who is unemployed,is looking to get in on a hustling game, but hasnt mastered the necessary skill, set, where Top Dog Underdog works is in the, tension and release of the relationship,of the brothers they at times seem to,genuinely love each other but at other, times there is also a brutal, competitiveness between the two and,Booth who has always felt to be second, fiddle to Lincoln is desperate to win,his older brothers approval tucking up,a relationship he has with a woman named,Grace and how hes working on his, hustling skills for for instance, the problem is he doesnt really know, how to be Lincolns equal without, pulling Lincoln down Grant said Lincoln, isnt the best Big Brother either he has,a serious drinking problem and with the,way Hawkins plays the role he probably, has at least one or two other habits,Lincoln probably isnt even aware hes, doing it but no matter what Booth tries,to do to either boost himself up or,bring Lincoln Down Lincoln never gives,Booth the satisfaction of having the, upper hand though the play is a Pulitzer,Prize winner I think its over long and, predictable Parks has a tendency to,rights redundance dialogue throughouts, whether it be about the two talking, about how to properly play three card,Monty or how one of them has worse off, than the other because of how screwed up,their relationship with their parents, was,at about two hours 20 minutes the, dialogue could have been tightened up,and brought into a one act under two, hours, the character names are a bit too on the, nose for me too the two could just as,easily have been named Kane and Abel or,Jacob and Esau and chekhovs gun is so,prominently presented early on that the, plays finale becomes, quite predictable but what works far, outweighs what doesnt the sibling, rivalry is genuine and director Leon, makes the two come alive being the, eldest sibling of three I relate very, much to Lincoln watching Booth do,everything he can to impress him and not,to feel inferior parkss dialogue is,sharp and piercing when its coming in,hot and fresh and not spinning its,Wheels a lot of the credit also goes to,Abdul Mateen II and Hawkins who are both, fantastic Hawkins has been one of my,favorite young actors for seven years, and he never disappoints and Abdul,Mateen Ive only recently become, familiar with but I love his urgency on,stage here coupled with hawkinss, reticence to return to the game it is a,little funny since Hawkins is two years, younger than Abdul Mateen, that hes playing the elder brother but,the two play the age is Right Hawkins, who is 34 looks so beaten by life he,looks like hes pushing 50 at times, while Abdul Mateen whos 36 runs around,a stage sometimes like hes still in his,mid-20s the two are excellent actors and,I love watching them on stage with each, other their performances are so riveting, that even with the predictable ending I,got a devilish Glee and hearing audience, member scream during its brutal, conclusion Top Dog Underdog is a really, good play it does have its drawbacks but,the electric Duo of Abdul Mateen and,Hawkins make Top Dog Underdog a must-see,but Im only one mans opinion so be,sure to leave yours in the comments, below if you want to see Top Dog,Underdog Ill leave a link in the, description you can support my channel,by liking sharing and subscribing and, click the notification Bell to be,notified about future reviews my next, review will be
