Rainey finishes the,presentation the remainder of the,program will belong to you for our,question and answer session because of,the number of people attending this this,webinar we are only accepting text,questions so if you would like to ask a,question please type it into the,questions panel located on the right,side of your screen you may submit,questions through the questions panel at,any time during the webinar and we will,answer all of them at the end we will do,a best to cover all of your questions,that you submit but we want to apologize,if we are unable to cover everything,finally a link to todays recording will,be emailed to you after todays event,and will be made available on the,webinar home page please allow five,business days for video upload and so,with that lets get started,Mateo Rainey received a PhD in,electrical engineering from the,University of Pavia in Italy and a PhD,in physics from the Humboldt University,of Berlin in Germany he later worked as,a laser physicist at the Lawrence,Berkeley National Laboratory after 10,years in academic research he shifted to,science communication and policy,activities first joining the Directorate,for climate action of the European,Commission and then the American,Physical Society where he is now the,deputy editor of the online magazine,physics dr. Rainey has taught many,workshops on scientific writing and,institutions around the world and we are,very very excited to have him here today,all right so with that Matteo take it,away hello everybody good morning and,thank you all for being here so today we,will focus the discussion on something,that I feel its him maybe too often,neglected inside in scientific careers,which is writing as as you mentioned I,was a former scientist used to do,experiments with lasers but then at some,point I was sort of preoccupied about,the way science is communicated to the,society and to policymakers and I,decided to work on this issues and,thats what Ive been doing for about 10,years now I am the deputy editor of an,online magazine of the American Physical,Society which is called physics and you,can find it at this website and I will,tell you a little a little more during,my talk not to advertise it but because,its relevant to the suggestions that,Im giving about about writing so for,the sake of this talk we will focus on,writing papers but you cant take this,principles and use them in any kind of,writing that youre doing you know,writing cover letters very important,type of writing is of course writing,research but those are grant proposals,and so on and so forth before we start,Id like to mention that the APS is,organizing other webinars and this one,is occurring on July 14th so next week,and it will talk about quantum memories,for photos so you can find the,information here so you can register for,that webinar too if youre interested so,I will start my talks with a main,message with a take-home message and if,you were to go home you know after 5,minutes I think this is the most,important thing that I want to tell you,which is this fact that the,really condense about that if you are a,scientist you have to consider yourself,a professional writer as a scientist you,communicate your science you communicate,the importance the beauty the impact of,your science mostly through writing,writing papers writing grant proposals,so this is a an interesting part of your,profession you have to consider yourself,a professional in this field and you,have to act accordingly,and very often I see that scientists are,very you know willing to go to great,lengths to improve their skills learning,new programming languages learn how to,operate new machinery learn new,mathematical tricks and theyre ready to,spend a long time and a lot of effort to,learn the skills but more rarely I see,scientists thinking about their writing,skills Im not advocating for doing,classes or workshops necessarily,although they can be very useful I guess,what Im advocating for is a little bit,of shift in in the way you think about,these things and if you realize that you,have this Duty that you are a,professional right that you are in some,sense Nabokov then you will act,accordingly every time you write you,will think about how youre doing and,you will try to to improve it and if you,do this consistently you will improve,constantly and very quickly and in this,talk I hope I will share some thoughts,that will help you doing this so there,are many reasons I mean the obvious,reason for writing well is that you know,you you want to communicate what youre,doing and when I give seminars and,workshops especially to students the,number one reason that people have in,mind is to get published if you write,well your chances of getting a paper,accepted or higher which is probably,true but I think there are many many,reasons to to try to write well and Id,like to mention a couple that I think,that are sometimes neglected the first,one is getting sighted,an important metric of your scientific,impact is citations things like the age,factor Frances the number of papers,decide yours and I can definitely say,that having analyzed a lot the,literature the most cited papers are,papers that are well-written theyre,papers that you know when they get,picked up for instance by a PhD students,arent trying to enter a new field they,read them they get the message they,learn something new there would be more,inclined to cite your paper so this this,there is a very very strong Association,and then second reason theyre like to,mention is something that really is very,important inside science and that is to,communicate with scientists from other,fields I see that many of the,breakthroughs that are happening and,probably many of the breakthroughs that,will happen in the future depend on the,interdisciplinary exchange of ideas,between different fields of physics and,of science in general Ive seen theories,for condensed matter being used to,describe the early universe that same,string theory being applied to design,optics,that are used to manipulate signal,signals in communication schemes and so,on so forth all these exchanges are only,possible if your people are written in a,way that they can be accessed by,scientists in other fields so you really,have to think about who you want to,communicate to with your papers and then,it might be are the reasons proposals or,something that are initially examined by,program managers they need to be written,for a very broad audience you can arrive,them in a very technical way and finally,you might be a very young PhD student,you are not even sure whether you want,to stay in physics for the rest of your,career but if you work on your,communication skills written and oral,this will be useful no matter where you,go you go to marketing you go to any any,kind of field writing well and,communicating well and,well be useful to your career,so before I start giving you my,suggestion so let me tell you a little,bit about what Im doing because there,are two aspects of what Im doing the,sort of justify the comments Im going,to give you and and sort of put my,experience into context so I work for,this online magazine its called physics,so you can find it physics though it yes,the org with many types of articles age of empires 4 is coming out soon,unfortunately this game series with a 24,year legacy going all the way back to,the big box day wont have a physical,release this time around not even the,collectors edition,since we wont have a physical edition,of four to look at lets look back at,the collectors edition of age of,empires 3.,welcome to the physical review where we,celebrate the physical version of games,and movies in a world of digital,exclusivity,please pardon the condition of the box i,found this at a secondhand store and it,surprised me when i saw it because i,didnt know they made a collectors,edition of age of empires 3.,this box is huge since theres a lot,inside the box has a card sleeve listing,all the contents on the back the front,is identical to the actual box both has,raised text,the back of the actual box doesnt have,any info on it just the old timey map,pattern the numerous items are held in,this felt line container,the first thing we see is the art book,this is no tiny dvd case size art book,this is a full size art book,the book alone is worth the price for,the entire collectors edition on the,secondary market,the books start off with artwork going,back all the way to age of empires wand,they arent the focus but its nice that,they paid a little homage to the games,that came before,of course they have concept art and,design sketches but they also have,untextured 3d models and different,layers of texture that they use for them,this book is dense everything from the,single player campaigns to multiplayer,design,i wouldnt say theres a lot of spoiler,in this art book but if you never played,a campaign before i would suggest you,play the game first since there are some,little surprises that might be spoiled,the artwork on the very last page of the,book do make you wonder what age of,empires 4 would be like if ensemble,studio never shut down,next up is the players guide this is a,very info dense book it gives the,historical context of the time period,and includes how history impacted the,story of the fictional single player,campaigns and game design it also,teaches player how to utilize various,strategies for each civilization and,multiplayer map,while artwork is sparse in this book,everything is printed in colors,if you think the art book is huge you,havent seen the poster yet this is a 43,inch by 27 inch poster the art selected,for this print is the same one that they,use on the book cover the details is,amazing if it werent for the folder,increases it can easily be mistaken as a,painting from afar,next up is the game itself they didnt,put the regular edition of the games,here unlike many other collector,editions out there,the blurb on the back of the box seems a,little redundant since the game is,already inside this big box anyway you,cant see it when youre purchasing it,this also comes with a making of slash,behind the scenes documentary about the,game this kind of things is always a,welcome part of any collectors edition,and i need to point out the clever work,in progress design of this label the,title is unfinished with sketch lines,and guides and the image below is,partially colored yet it doesnt look,out of place compared to other items,the soundtrack to age of empires 3 is,the best of the trilogies the,composition is stronger with lots of,varieties it is nice to have them on a,cd,this also includes a little demo disc,for you to share with a friend the,design on the card sleeve for the disc,is like a mini version of the regular,retail box,next up is the manual this is a hefty,manual with a lot of information given,that this is a real-time strategy game,with multiple factions and play styles,in addition to the many changes made,since age of empires 2 this has to be,dense,unfortunately this isnt printed in,color but given the quality of all the,other printed items this can be forgiven,lastly is the quick reference printed on,cardstock it has what i consider to be,the most important part of any physical,release of a strategy game a tech tree,it also have a list of hotkeys and,civilization bonuses normally i critique,the artwork and design on the disc box,and book covers as i review them this,time around theyre all consistently,good the artworks and designs they used,fits the games time period nicely i,especially love the parchment paper,aesthetic,however the images that they choose to,use on the disc while unique on its own,just kind of blends together when viewed,alongside the other discs,one thing special about the age of,empires 3 collectors edition is that,everything is specifically made for this,edition they could have easily put the,regular edition of the game the manual,or other items into this box instead,they made every item special,this is a very good collectors edition,its a shame that they never release a,similar collectors edition to the war,chief and asian dynasty expansion,if youre a age of empires series fan,and you have to shelf space for this big,box then this is a must-have theres a,lot of content and the designs is,thematically consistent,and after all this is the only,collectors edition in this series so,far including four,collectors edition contains the only,art book for the first three games they,did announce an art book for four but we,dont know if it contains any artwork,from 133 yet,cost isnt a problem on the secondary,market this is very affordable the art,book alone is worth the price of around,20 dollars,if youre looking to get one i hope that,you find one in better condition than,the uh good morning good afternoon good,evening everyone uh welcome to all of,you to our online author and referee,tutorial for physical review fluids,my name is Eric Logan Im one of the,colleague editors of the journal so I,will be joined today in this session by,four,um uh people Im going to introduce them,one by one first is Beverly McKeon shes,also colleague editor uh of the journal,um so shes based at Caltech and is,about to move to Stanford Im at the,University of Cambridge and Im joined,with,um by Brad Rubin from the aps editorial,office hes the general manager of the,Toronto and by two of the associate,editors of the journal we have luminita,Daniela from University of Hawaii France,and we have Roberto Zenit from Brown,University,so Im going to first go briefly through,the program we have a full program for,about an hour so after a few minutes of,uh welcome from me well have a,presentation of the Journal of and its,history by abroad then Beverly will uh,briefly introduce and highlight two new,initiatives for the journal uh which is,a recent and then the bulk of the,todays session will be a q a Im only,rated by Brad where the editors can uh,and Brad as well can answer questions,about the procedure of the journal uh,and any questions you may have as an,author or as a referee and then well,close uh the event will last an hour or,less,okay so thats the thats the plan so,before I leave the floor to Brad I wanna,I wanted to take a minute to highlight,the faces behind the journal so the,journal is led by a team of two quality,editors thats Beverly and I and with us,we have 17 editors in addition to the,two of us who are handling the papers,that are submitted to us we have two uh,editors at the bottom left here for uh,focused solely on letters and bride in a,minute will tell you about the letters,the short format,um and then in addition to the two,letters editors and the two lead editors,there are 15 associate editors,um and were very privileged in the,journal to have editors a team of,editors who are very experienced very,distinguished members of the community,and who together cover the whole,spectrum of the mechanics so when you,send a paper to us it will be seen by,two editors first it will be sin,violated editor and then it will be sent,to an asset editor and that associate,editor will be an expert in the your,research area or not far from your,research area and so were very,fortunate in the journal to be able to,cover the whole Spectrum so now I will,let Brad tell you a little bit more,about the history of the journal and the,procedures of the journal if you are a,referee or if you are an author and then,well go back to a discussion Brad,yeah so yes the physical review fluids,began publishing in 2016 when the,editors of physics of fluids uh left,that journal they all left to found the,new Journal they were unhappy with,things that were happening at AIP,American Institute of physics which,published physics and fluids the,um this journal is uh well its the only,APS Journal devoted exclusively to the,field of fluid mechanics its grown,rapidly with uh almost getting close to,600 papers in recent years,um the lettersection which Eric,mentioned publishes shorter letter style,papers uh containing especially timely,and important new results,uh each month uh the editors select two,to five papers of particular interest or,importance or clarity as editors,suggestions those can be either letters,or regular articles uh the editors,suggestions theyre selected by uh the,editors okay,so some of the uh topics that we publish,well turbulence is the largest single,topic but but its not you know there,are many other topics uh that uh in both,low and high Reynolds number uh fluids,we as as Eric said we cover the full,spectrum of fluid mechanics but this,gives you an idea of the uh relative uh,volume from different fields,okay,the uh we are closely coupled with the,division of fluid dynamics uh as you,know the DFD meeting is is going to be,in in about a week,um the uh and a couple of ways we do,that the the the division runs the,gallery of fluid motion but the winners,the award winners of that uh contest uh,theres about a hundred uh submissions,every year about 10 of them are are,selected as Award winners and those,Award winners uh publish are invited to,submit a short paper to physical review,fluids uh its an Open Access paper but,theres no charge for it uh describing,their poster or video Then when those,papers are published they appear,together as a collection and the recent,collection was uh of last years winners,was just published so you can find it on,the physical review of fluids uh site,the another way is that the uh frankiel,award is given for the paper judge be,the best in the previous year by young,authors that thats the idea the best,pay were published by exclusively where,all of the authors Are Young and the,criteria is that the highest academic,degree was awarded no more than 12 years,ago,um uh and this the the committee which,Awards this is external is is uh not the,editors its an external Committee of,the DFD okay so other uh ways are that,the editors okay the editors uh choose,invited speakers from the DFD meeting,with a highly significant contribution,to publish uh papers uh to publish a,paper in the again an invited paper to,appear in the journal these papers can,then appear together as a collection,when theyre published the auth there,are also you and now were having a,couple of fluid next symposia every year,and importantly noteworthy papers from,from those Symposium may also will be,invited and appear as a collection so,um the uh at this coming meeting there,will be too many symposia one on the,fluid mechanics of microplastic,Transport uh organized by Michelle de,benedetto and Nicholas Ouellette and,then uh another one on body soft body,slamming fluids organized by someone,Zhong,okay,the criteria for publication in physical,review is that it it must be a new paper,not uh previous it must be new research,not uh something not previously,published it must be obviously,scientifically sound correct and not,misleading as judged by the referees and,the editors uh significantly Advanced,the physics of flows and important in,its field in other words we dont just,publish something because its correct,it has to be something that will is,important to research and will likely,stimulate other further research and of,course the paper has to be well written,so that its accessible and to readers,and and can be understood by them,uh the peer review process as you you,may know is that when the manuscript is,submitted it is first given an,evaluation by an editor not a detailed,evaluation but uh the editor who has a,lot of experience and knowledge in the,field can look at the paper and say you,know this really doesnt look like,something appropriate for the journal,then they can reject it right away and,that saves your the authors time and,the editors and the referees time and,allow the authors to do something else,with the paper if the editor said yeah,this looks like it could fit in it could,be appropriate then he will pitch who he,or she will choose referees uh to send,it to the referees will uh write a more,detailed report looking at the paper in,more detail uh they will send that uh,that usually we we send it to two,referees they then it comes back to the,editor who can either reject the paper,again at that point they could accept,the paper or they could send it back to,the authors for further revision and,then the process gets repeated,until the paper is either reject finally,rejected or accepted for publication,uh a paper,um its the structure of a scientific,paper so if youre writing a paper its,important to have an introduction we you,want to explain why uh you know why is,this interesting why is it important not,just how you did what you did and how,you did it but the introduction should,try and make a case for why this paper,matters,um,uh the need for your wor

NEW Renault Megane E-Tech review: confusing but brilliant
what is a Renault Megan,it seems like a simple question but,there are quite a few possible answers,over the years weve had a Megan Coupe a,convertible a saloon an estate and of,course a hatchback but guess what,Renault isnt done this is the new Megan,E-Tec and its an electric crossovery,hatchback thing Renault doesnt,officially call it an SUV but it rides a,bit higher than your average hatchback,and its slightly shorter in limp so it,kind of looks like one hmm,which is weird actually isnt it I know,but this is actually probably,the best Megan thats ever been and look,there is a reason why there are so many,very lovely hatchbacks that are now,becoming electric SUVs which Ill,explain in a bit but overall,I mean what do you think,I think its quite nice,I like the color I like the design of,the lights I do have an annoyance,because actually on the Renault Zoe the,charge point is here but its not here,on this,its here on the side,there you go,which when youre pulling up to a charge,point to fast charge the car just gets a,bit annoying when its on the side,because youve got to angle the car,right you know what I mean but thats my,only bug there,the Megan e-text underpinnings are,promising too it rides on the same cmf,EV platform as the Nissan area which,incidentally is our 2022 Car of the Year,dont you know now Lorena uses a,different electric motor though and you,get a 217 brake horsepower unit that,powers the front wheels alone naught 62,comes up around seven and a half seconds,and you get 280 miles of range thats,not too shabby is it,thats a nice sounding indicator isnt,it,I like that,its nice not quite as good as a,Citron,c5x thats got the best indicator sound,but thats not bad at all,thats up there up there might even make,my top five,I mean this car is pretty Plum and,decent behind the wheel it is very,refined very refined and you dont get a,lot of wind noise theres not a lot of,road noise its very nice,relaxing car to poodle around town in,its what its good for,I mean suspension sort of soaks up the,lumps and bumps in the road pretty well,I mean it does get a little bit fidgety,when its at low speeds but no feels,very well,engineered,I mean steering steering is very quick,handling is very nice dont get me wrong,this isnt a hot hatch this is like 1.6,tons this isnt the kind of car that you,are just going to Chuck around corners,and have a bit of fun getting the back,end out you know youre not going to do,that in this car,this car doesnt want you to do that,though to be fair it wants you to drive,it in a relaxing manner I mean Im not,saying this is a slow car its got,plenty of punch behind it especially for,a family car you can change the drive,modes as well so you can change it onto,go to sport there you go oh see and it,gives just a little bit more throttle,response,but,I mean as much as thats fun I dont,feel like this car,is designed for that so Im going to,keep it in Eco because thats where I,feel like thats,thats its happy place in eco mode,thats where its happy,there we go lovely thats nice and easy,to do wasnt it,um I need to mention the brakes the,brakes are weird,so theres regen break-in,which a lot of electric cars have which,is where if you turn it all the way up,then you get one pedal driving not,completely on this though because if you,turn it all the way up and then lift,your foot off it brings you down to a,creep not a complete stop,but what I do want to mention,is when youre changing the strength of,the regen break in using the Flappy,paddles here when you put it all the way,up to the top,it actually depresses the brake itself,which is intentional like they did plan,on doing that,it just feels a bit weird,I think Id rather just have a normal,brake pedal,or maybe you just get used to it after a,while just it just makes,it it feels weird then when you put your,foot on the brake yourself,a single Lane,I might be able to get out that way oh,watch me go sideways this is not an,off-roader but well give it a bloody,good go,it didnt even thank me,thats really annoyed me,always thank someone,politeness isnt difficult Ive just,physically reversed and moved out of,your way so you can go past me and you,didnt even thank me,[Music],right interior this is where we are,really impressed with the Renault Megane,etec I mean it feels fresh,it feels modern it feels miles ahead of,the ID3 oh my how the tables have turned,shall we start with the physical climate,controls yes please lovely I mean its,just so much easier to use than having,to use a blooming touchscreen all the,time so thank you Renault for putting,that in like that,and then build quality I mean its,lovely got nice little materials,dotted around all over the place its,very nice a steering wheel has a touch,of the,BMW IX about it which isnt a bad thing,the infotainment itself right,we have to talk about this because its,really really impressive so it is based,on the Android automotive system which,makes total sense because if you think,about it there wont be any other car,manufacturer that will be able to make,better software than Google so thats,whats going on in here,and its brilliant I mean its really,sharp its really responsive and then,when youve got cars like the ID3 that,are just really struggling with their,software thats where this matters its,very good and also its got,um voice activation where you can say OK,Google and ask her to do whatever you,but Im not talking to you now though,babe its fine Im not talking to you,now so okay okay so the cabin is quite,lovely but you might be wondering what,is the deal with this body style why,does the McGann E-Tech look less like a,traditional hatchback and more like a,crossover,right now,obviously this car is electric and a lot,of electric cars have their battery pack,in the floor because it makes sense from,a packaging perspective and it makes you,have a nice low center of gravity good,for Dynamics and all the things,but when that happens,raises up the,so then when your passengers are sat in,the back it feels like especially if,youre tall it feels like your knees are,at your boobs so then you have to raise,the seat up a little bit higher but then,your heads touching the ceilings and,then the roof gets raised up and then,you just end up with an SUV and that is,why so many electric cars are now SUVs,theyre just easier to design and a lot,of people seem to like them the upside,is that the Megan is a fairly roomy,machine cabin space is about the same as,a Volkswagen RD3 so theres enough room,for four adults really tall passengers,might find things a little bit tight in,the bag but the 440 liter boot is quite,generous even if it is quite deep so it,makes it a little bit of a struggle,getting things in and out but really the,mcganns biggest problem is this the mg4,its cheaper than the 36 Grand Renault,and even though it doesnt quite have,the same premium feel it drives well and,has decent range oh the market is,certainly hotting up isnt it
