Retrospec Beaumont City Bike 7-Speed Review
hey everyone my name is hexa berry and, today Ill be doing something a little, bit different I know all three of you,who watch my videos are used to me,posting gaming content well today I,figured I would make a review over a,bicycle I recently purchased and had a,few days of riding to give my thoughts,on this is my first bike review so dont, expect professional details down to an,atomic level so this is the retrospec 58,centimeter 7 speed Beaumont City bike, and a sweet matte black paint job with, some tan accents I only really bought, this bike because I loved how it looked,Ill have old and vintage style of,things so this just works perfect for me,I also havent ridden a bike since I was, about 12 years old so I felt the urge to,get back into it,I bought this bike from the retrospect, website for 400 although I could have, saved a little over a hundred dollars if,I bought the version that was on sale, which would be the Legacy variant I,asked the support chat what the, difference was between the Legacy, version and the non-legacy version they, say that the non-legacy version is the, latest 2023 model with a stronger,three-piece crank set so knowing that, stronger is better I spent the four, hundred dollars for the non-legacy,version,once the bike was delivered within the, week of ordering I ran into an issue I,had to put the thing together myself, luckily the chain rear brakes rear wheel, rear fender and rack and most of the, frame were all attached and ready to go,the front wheel front brakes handles, seat pedals and front fender needed to,be installed, for the most part it was fairly simple, but I can guarantee the front brakes, were meant to be put together by a,certified NASA employees the way I,installed them I get stopping power but,I have to pull back a lot more than I do,for the rear brakes, the tires need aired up a bit but that, was expected and the seat took some, getting used to the whole riding, experience needed some getting used to,since its been 10 to 11 years since I,last rode,I wasnt used to the thin wheels and, also sitting up high was pretty odd but,I got used to that pretty quickly, shifting was so smooth and I could get,it to some good speeds on the higher, gears with no rattling or concerns the, tires for one look cool but also provide,a good amount of grip when going around, turns arent in rear fenders provide, protection from dirt mud water and, whatever else you decide to ride through, that might get kicked up the rear rack, has a cool little mouse trap type, mechanism which I used to hold small and, thin items the rack also has, capabilities to hold larger crates or,bags which I might put to use sooner or,later, there is a bell which is nice and loud,to warn people up ahead and even a spot,to install a water bottle holder for, those who need it,riding around in the Beaumont City bike,is one of the most relaxing things Ive,done and I can see the benefit of owning,a bike in a city it just depends on,where you ride though I live in Wichita,Kansas and trying to get the Sedgwick,County Park on a bike is a nightmare, especially around rush hour I think, cities should improve routes for those, who commute on bikes and cities should, spend less time focusing on car, dependent infrastructure, thats just my opinion but let me know, what you think in the comments that will, conclude my review so if you enjoy this, content I might invest in the GoPro or,something to record rides around the, city, until then dont forget to like And,subscribe and Ill see you all in the, next video thanks for watching,[Music],[Applause],[Music]

How to Avoid Wasting Money on a Bad Beginner Fixed Gear Bike and Buy a Good One
so if youre looking to buy a fixed gear, you need to know that theres a lot more, bad beginner fixed gears than there are, good beginner fixed gears i would say,the bad bikes outnumber the good bikes, probably three or four to one and, theres two types of complete fixed gear, bikes on the market the first type is,for normies and when i say normies i,just mean people that arent into, cycling bikes out of for normies lure, people into buying them because they, look cool they usually have a lot of,loud flashy colors yes they look cool to,the beginners eye but at the end of the,day they have a sub-par components, especially for the price that some of,these bikes are charging will be heavy, and sluggish to ride require a lot of,maintenance and trips to the bike shop,to make sure that you can even ride it,and will be a lot more expensive in the, long run the second type of complete fix, gear are enthusiast bikes enthusiast, bikes they may not have the flashiest, components they may not have the most, color options for you and your unique, personality but theyll be reliable they, give you a lot of bike for your money, theyll be reasonably lightweight and,fun and zippy to ride so heres how to,spot the beginner fixtures for normies, the people that arent into cycling and, that dont do their research that are, usually rip off versus the bikes that, are for enthusiasts the ones that are, worth your money will be fun to ride and, that you should probably buy for looking,to buy fixed gear shout out to wobby, cycles for sponsoring this video in the, event that you do actually get a bike, through this video be sure to do,yourself a favor hit the subscribe, button so you could watch me and wobbys, video series three minute thursday where,we teach you how to get the most fun out,of your bike in 180 seconds or less and,you could see that series by clicking, the card above or sticking around to the,end of the video and you can check out, wobby cycles linked in the description,of course ill have all the bikes that i,mentioned in this video linked in the, description the ones that are worth your, money anyway its important to know that, wabi does sponsor the channel i do ride,a lobby myself and i encourage you to do,all your own research into all the bikes, that we talk about here today but i hope, that the information that im giving you,is still useful to you even if this is,sponsored,so heres how to spot the normie bikes,in other words the bad beginner fix here, bikes i should 100 avoid bad beginner, fix gears really emphasize how the bike, looks over how the bike rides what, people that arent into cycling are, looking for is just a bike that looks, cool enough to buy so a lot of bad, beginner fix gears will have the same, traits like theyll emphasize a lot of,color options over how the bike actually, rides and what the parts are on the bike, theyll usually come with these colorful, and heavy deep dish wheels that again, look great to the beginner eye but are, really sluggish and not fun to ride and, when youre looking for information on,these bikes product pages youre, probably not going to find very much, other than how many color options you, have to give the illusion that you have,a choice when youre buying one of these, bikes and bad beginners fixed gears tend,to not have a lot of information because, number one theyre not really trying to,sell these bikes to people that care, about this information and more, information would just confuse their, target, market and number two theyre trying to,hide the fact that these bikes kind of,suck for the price some immediate red, flags i should look for when shopping, for a beginner fixed gear is that the, bike has no,published weight for the complete bike, while weight isnt the end all be all, determining factor it is a good rule of,thumb to use when youre looking at,bikes and usually lighter bikes tend to,be higher quality a good beginner, complete fake skirt will weigh around 20,to say 22 pounds depending on what size, you get but bad beginner fix gears tend,to weigh around 25 pounds and that is,way that you can feel with each pedal, stroke and it just makes it less fun to,ride thats why these bikes dont show, the weight on their product page this, right here,is my cousins pure fix original series, she obviously bought it before, consulting me,and this is their 47 centimeter model, the lightest the smallest and the, lightest one in their size,i would think that even for an,entry-level bike,a bike of 47 centimeters should weigh, about maybe 18 pounds so lets see how, much this thing actually weighs, keep in mind this thing costs,600,dollars,10.53 kilos which is,23 pounds and three ounces so this bike, weighs, about five pounds more than i would, expect it to,so,dont buy it especially for six hundred, dollars this thing should cost two, hundred dollars that would be a fair, price not trying to be mean just, calling in as i see it another huge red, flag is that theres no geometry heart, the geometry chart shows you the, dimensions of the tubing on the bike and,the angles of the head tube in the sea, tube although it sounds really nerdy is,actually a super important piece of the, puzzle when youre buying a bike because, fit is the number one most important, thing that determines whether youll, enjoy riding your bike or not even just,a few centimeters a few millimeters in,some cases can be the difference between, you actually wanting to go out and ride, your bike because youre comfortable on,it versus being in pain on your bike and,the geometry chart is key in finding the, right sized bike for you if theres no,geometry chart just dont buy it just, dont save yourself the time and the, money and the pain another red flag is,when a company refers to the bikes as,fixies instead of fixed gears now i made,an entire video about what the heck of,fixie is and why experienced writers, dont use the term fixie and say fixed, gear instead basically all you need to,know about the word fixie is that its a,term that beginners mostly use and, companies will use that term to speak to,beginners that dont know much about, bikes to try to extract as much money, from them as possible while giving them,a crappy bike bad beginner fixer bikes, also pretty much tend to look exactly, the same when it comes to how theyre, put together theyll be constructed out,of high tensile steel which is the, cheapest material that you can make a,bike out of its really heavy and its, really sluggish to ride its not fun, they also have sloppy welds because the, companies making the frames only have so,much time to spend putting together the, tubing for each frame so that they can, keep the cost as low as possible and, those deep dish wheels that look great,to the beginner eye theyll be around 40,or more millimeters deep again super, heavy and sluggish to ride but, look flashy and cool to trick a beginner, into buying them and theyll have loose, ball bearing hubs bottom brackets and, headsets meaning that theyll just be,more maintenance in the long run and, wont run as smoothly the more you ride,it and these bikes will almost, definitely be made in china this is just,a rule of thumb theres great bikes made,in china and theres really terrible, bikes made in china but the number of,terrible bikes far outweighs the number,of good bikes that are made in china, theres a lot of bad beginner fixtures, out there from the state core line at,400 the pure cycles,at 600 jeez and the mango at over 1 000,that is straight up robbery right there, all of these bikes should cost 200 i,wouldnt spend a penny more than that,so youre better off just avoiding them, good beginner fix your bikes on the, other hand are kind of the exact, opposite of bad beginner fixier bikes, enthusiast bikes tend to look more, understated because bike companies know, thats what enthusiasts like they know, that if somebody wants to make their, bike colorful and flashy theyll do so,themselves down the line with their own, parts theres also a huge emphasis on,the bikes ride quality and the quality,of components over how they look, although,th

Retrospec Harper Single Speed Bike Unboxing & First Impressions
welcome diyers to another episode of diy,dot life and in this episode were gonna,be unboxing,a retrospect harper coaster fixy city, bike, were gonna take it for a spin and im,gonna give you my first impressions,[Music],real quick i want to send a shout out to,wolf mtb,its a friend of mines passion project, and if youre into mountain biking, you got to hit their instagram account, and if you go to his website and use, promo code enjoy 15,you can score a shirt like this for 15,off back in july i had a couple of bikes, stolen from my garage i know it sucks i,have to say, since then ive been scouring the, internet looking for replacements, and i got to tell you since the pandemic, and with all the tariffs, and theres just a bike shortage out, there i cant find, anything in stock and what i can find in,stock, seems overpriced and i guess, manufacturers are raising prices because,of the high demand of bicycles right now, and,so i was getting a little discouraged, and then i got an email from retrospect,a couple days before black friday i,guess it was like a pre-black friday, email, and i saw that they were offering a bike, for 176 dollars, and i looked at it and it looked pretty, cool and it was 176 dollars, and that means i could get two bikes for,the price of a gravel bike that i was, looking at,and without a lot of research i went, ahead and added two of them to my cart, and checked out um,yeah then i went on youtube, and watched a couple of unboxing videos, for the harper, and saw that for the most part people, were pretty happy with them, but to be honest i didnt want to spend,a lot of money on a bike because im,scared its going to get stolen again, and im also super curious what a 176,dollar bike,is actually like is it rideable is it,awesome,is it upgradable is it complete trash,if i end up liking this bike im,probably going to do some gravel bike, upgrades to it like, swap out the tires swap out the pedals, the handlebars, and im even considering installing a,shimano nexus,3 speed hub so i can get up and down, some hills,if i do those upgrades check out the, video right here, another diy mod i want to do to the bike, specifically to the matte paint,is to apply some gloss enamel and using, these stencils, put a design element on the frame in the, print world this is called the spot, gloss, and you can do polka dots or,checkerboards or even like gucci logos,so when that video is ready to go check,it out right here, all right enough talking about it lets, get this box open and see whats inside, all right i ordered the bike,on november 22nd and it got here on,december,2nd which means it took about 10 days to,get to me which is actually, pretty good considering its this big,and everything and how much,of a demand bikes are right now,so it arrived in pretty good shape im,pretty impressed with the, exception of this side, where we had a couple blowouts you can,see my axles popping out here but, luckily they put a protective plastic, cap on it to protect that one, this one didnt have the protective cap,but i looked at it i think its okay,so for the most part from the exterior,it seems like it was, packed fairly well so lets go ahead and, open the thing up,from here i can see that the bike is,actually the right color i was a little, worried that it might have showed up,wrong color but so far so good so lets, pull the whole thing out, thats pretty much everything right, there,so it looks pretty well packaged and, organized and zip tied and, protected lets get all this stuff off,and well see whats underneath, all right, now that ive got all of the major, components kind of separated out here, and laid out its actually a pretty, straightforward, process there isnt a whole lot to this, because you know its got the coaster, brake, which doesnt require me to mess with, any brakes um,really all it is is uh attaching your, your handlebars your saddle post, and the pedals and the front wheel and, youre ready to ride,i mean pump up those tires and youre, good to go so,lets take a look at what comes,in the box,so we have,a retrospect user manual,we have installation instructions which,i pre-red so,i probably dont need those, set of pedals plastic by the way,and looks like we got some tools here, they give you this kind of universal, wrench, and a couple of,allen wrenches, and it looks like they give you some, extra reflector, brackets or something but i think all i,need are these two oh,um one other thing youll need which the, instructions call for,is a little bit of grease, some of these components need to be,slightly greased before you, install them so ive got some over here, heres my grease its just like an,all-purpose,kind of stuff here uh,so what do we want to do first well, lets go ahead and um,lets see i kind of like how its, standing up on its own,so maybe well do the tire last and, well do everything else,so lets go ahead and do the seat post, that says to put some grease on the seat, post which is a little silly, but ill do it,okay that was easy, next lets do,the handlebars, actually this is actually quite, important, the forks are going the wrong direction,so we need to,rotate the forks 180,like that now we can tighten it down, okay lets open up these petals, and theyre labeled right left,we got stickers on them telling you, which way and the instructions say that, the right one goes, clockwise and the left one goes counter, clockwise,oh almost forgot i want you to grease, these things too, just a little bit of grease,[Music],ah almost forgot this one goes left, counterclockwise, very important, okay thats good, now well do the front tire, and its hard to tell which, direction the tire goes so im looking,at the tread on the back tire, and im just making it go the same, direction as the back tire,so thats this way and the only thing, here,is the tire has these safety hooks, these like safety washers that hook into, this little notch this little hole in,the frame,in the fork here so that, you know if youre hauling down the road, and, your bolts come loose, your wheel wont go flying off on you,at least thats the idea i think, and well align the, safety pin and well just do a little, hand tighten,[Music],make sure its, between the forks, tighten that one down, tighten that one down um,and that about does it i mean that its, really all thats to it,its pretty much ready to ride you just, put a little bit of air in the tires and,its good to go,[Music],and it doesnt seem to be too terribly, heavy so thats good,it comes with this, clear plastic chain guard and,but it doesnt come with any mounting, hardware or,actually thats probably what those, those black clips are,but uh it doesnt mention those in the, installation,or the um assembly guide so plus i dont, want to install it i dont care about, those things i dont care for those, things anyways,so lets get some air in these tires, and lets take it for a spin see how it,rides,uh were going to just going to take a,look for a little spin around the, parking lot here, all right lets get this out of the way,[Music],im still getting used to the coaster, break sometimes,i press on it and i dont realize that, its on,[Music],but in general the bike itself,is quite nice to ride im pleasantly, surprised i thought i had about a 50 50,chance,of getting a rideable bike for 176,dollars,but um its surprisingly nice,i did notice it seems a little short, lengthwise, but luckily when i got to work i checked, the saddle and i had another couple, centimeters,to slide the saddle back so that fixed, that problem,[Music],i dont really care for the handlebars, too much im probably going to replace, those,i just dont like the position of the my,hands, the grips i thought the grips looked, really cheap when i first took them out,of the box,but theyre kind of growing on me,[Music],the bike itself sounds really smooth and, feels really smooth when it rides,uh,you think what else oh the gear ratio,so i did notice the um the gear ratio on,the bike,is a little bit higher than my last, fixie,[Music],which means startups are a little, tougher but once you get moving, your feet arent moving quite so mu
Review – Retrospec Harper Fixie / Single Speed Bicycle – In Depth Amateur Review – July 2020
hey guys i know my channel is usually, about car stuff and dog stuff but, theres a global pandemic going on right, now everyone in los angeles where i live, now, wants to get a bicycle i went on,craigslist i was reaching out to people, and then i saw someone selling a,retrospect bike, for 300 so i went to retrospects, website and, lucky enough they had my size i was, pretty discouraged before this so thats, why i resorted to craigslist, even though im not a big craigslist fan, when i get killed, what i was looking for in a bicycle i,dont want anything thats like, over engineered i didnt want a mountain, bike because i didnt want anything, heavy i wanted something lightweight, and i wanted something that i could kind,of modify i didnt want to be a hipster, but unfortunately i bought a single, speed bicycle what are the advantages of,a single speed bicycle, maintenance cost, and i guess thats what i,have on paper well see this is called a,retrospect harper about a size, large what tools im going to use i have,a little, tool set that i purchased on amazon i,will post the link,to that tool set in the description,so right now it is fully assembled and i,just wanted to go over,a couple of things that you may, experience when you do,install this bike one of the first, complaints that i see people, say is that the tire is too close,to the metals thats because this fork, right here, youre installing it the wrong way so if,you rotate this, this angle would become actually a,little bit straighter, and then when its straight the tire, would knock in to the pedals,so as you can clearly see there is a,sticker on this, that retrospec has included that says, front,so this is my first time dealing with, this type of valve here, and it was pretty interesting so its,not a,shredder valve im not saying i think, its called a presta valve,so the bottom washer was a little bit, loose,so i tightened that up and then i undid, the, valve cap and, right now if i push down on this nothing, happens, right so in order to release air, this met this brass part here i have to,pull on that, then once i do that you see i can, take air out so i guess its a safety, valve,so for the life of me i was unable to,figure that out so i had it fully, tight pumped some air in there nothing, would work, the other thing to remember is if you, dont tighten this up all the way,and you try to put the valve cover on,its going to,the top of the valve cover is going to,push down on the brass, and air will be released this is the, front wheel,um the one thing that i noticed is,okay so theres an initial nut on there, right and then there is a lock ring, washer,so this nut and this washer theyre, separate pieces this is a 15 millimeter, not, rather 15 millimeter so um,the tools that they give you do work on,it but obviously,a socket or a wrench is probably going,to be,better for you so the way that it works,is,this wheel is comes off you take this, nut off you take this washer off,and then youre going to be able to,place, this wheel,on this fork here right,so it just it just shimmies in there, and then there is a pressed area on,the actual fork so then this washer, with the lock ring can sit on that and, then you can, bolt this on now it would be,wonderful if they machined it for it to,perfectly fit but considering this is a,200,bicycle that doesnt happen so what you,get is if you, place this wheel in all the way at the, bottom,is youre gonna have either, the wheel not sitting straight,or youre gonna have a hard time, adjusting your brakes, now what i did was initially put the,the wheel hub all the way into the fork,i gotta be a little bit more specific,so it sat all the way at the bottom i,was like okay if its all the way at the, bottom,im assuming that it is i guess designed, equally,so this way i wont need to worry about,it and ill make my adjustments on the, brakes,so what i was noticing that my front, brake, pad was clamping up here on the rim, instead of on the dish so obviously um,the brake pad is supposed to clamp up,here because its the most, flattest surface area and this way,if it clamps on there right, youll have more stopping power whereas,if you try to break up there,um youre not gonna have any braking, power so if you look at this there is a,four millimeter hex bolt right there, and theres an opening at the top so if,i undo, this bolt right here i can slide this, brake pad,up and down for an exact placement of,where i want it to be,so i saw the design of this brake pad,and i see this little fin up here, and i thought the fin should be towards, the tire,so like because the fin moves away so i,thought that, you know oh it gives it gives you, clearance so this way you can, adjust the brake pad all the way to,the edge and this way the tire wont be,affected by the brake pad because you, dont obviously want to,rub against the tire here because thats, whats going to cause premature wear,or a flat tire or something along those, lines well unfortunately i was wrong, and this fin needs to be at the bottom, and how do i know that,at the bottom of this brake pad its it,tells you which direction, forward is supposed to be so it was that, way guys, okay the other thing that i had to do,was this brake line, this is held on by a 5.5 millimeter, hex if im not mistaken so you undo this, bolt, and you can actually pull on this brake, line okay,so what i noticed is even though i had, adjusted the brake pad, appropriately i still wasnt getting a,tight enough, feel so when i was when i was applying, the front brakes,i noticed that it wasnt stopping, quickly enough and i understand with, front brakes you kind of have to,um be gentle otherwise youre gonna you, know high side so to speak you know flip, over,so what i did was i undid this bolt and, this clamp here, holds this brake line thats all that, holds it so i,pulled on this brake line as much as i,could so there would be,not as much slack on the brake line and,it tightened up the brake,uh travel so thats what i wanted to do,to be honest,i dont really like the front brakes i,never really use them i guess you,you go all all front and rear brakes, when you apply, them um but i was planning on taking it,off if i dont like the way it feels, but so that was the front brake, adjustment so,just remember you can adjust the brake, pad the height of it,based on this and also adjust the brake, line a little bit of damage, due to shipping im okay with that this,is on the front, fork theres also i guess a location for, some attachments,um so thats pretty cool you can put a,front, basket or something like that so lets, okay and the other thing is this brake, line is,very long i think im gonna cut it its,it like down here, okay lets move on to these pedals and,the reviews on,amazon for this as well as the reviews,on their website,i noticed that a lot of people had zero, idea how to,install these okay you can see that, little r right there, this is the right pedal the right pedal, goes on the side of the bike that has,the crank and the chain, installing them is really, straightforward on the right one you go,clockwise, this is a threaded bolt that goes into, this arm right here you tighten that up,um once again they give you this tool, but im not really a hundred percent,i dont like that tool unfortunately, when i moved here from the east coast i,got rid of all my tools so i dont, really have my wrenches, but you know i will get some from harbor, freight later on today, and the ones on the left and those are, tightened, counterclockwise one thing i failed to,mention with the tires is that i did, pump them the maximum inflate, two is 70 psi so i inflated these to 65,psi im 190 pounds,so i thought my big butt is probably, going to push down these tires so,i said let me just do 65 this was built,in china, and it was made on june 5th 2020,a bit of adhesive residue need to get, some glue gun for, that really cool design element,a couple of red spokes on the rear wheel, initially i was a little bit concerned, about having to take off the rear wheel, because i know that theres two types of,cogs here so i guess, this one is the f
