Review Revisit: Harbor Freight Icon Ratchets Version 2.0
whats going on guys today a review that,ive wanted to make for almost 18 months,to the day what is it,the harbor freight icon ratchets,version 2.0,[Music],[Laughter],so if you guys remember back to october,4th of 2019,i shot a video on these icon ratchets um,they had just come out i was probably,one of the first people out on youtube,to make like an unsolicited review about,these icon tools,because at that time harbor freight was,absolutely spamming,um tool youtubers,with free product in an effort to try,and get the the word out about these,icon tools im saying you know some of,these guys got you know tool boxes,full sets of tools all kinds of stuff,um,so i went out and i actually bought one,myself back in 2019 like i was saying,and the results that i came up with were,drastically different than the free,reviews on youtube,shockingly,what was actually going on was these,long handle flex head ratchets,were locking up under hard use and i was,probably one of the first people to,actually document what was actually,going on,not that that actually means anything,because im sure people would have found,out about it eventually but i actually,returned my icon ratchets before the,recall came out because they were,complete,trash i hated them,about a week after my video came out,harbor freight issued a recall,on the ratchets that i reviewed in the,video,so,this is going to be my review of the,version 2.0 icon ratchet,so uh lets go over to the bench and,dive into this thing and,see if its any different than the last,one i got,so taking a look at the two receipts i,got on the screen the one on the left is,the original purchase from 2019 the one,on the right is the one i just made a,couple days ago in 2021,um the original price of this ratchet in,2019 as you guys can see is 49.99 i also,had a 10 off coupon which you know r.i.p,no longer exists at harbor freight and,knocked it down to 44.99,and uh,2021 this ratchet is now 53.99 with no,coupons available,so if you guys ever want to know the,price difference between an icon,paperweight and an icon ratchet turns,out its only about nine bucks which,when you put it that way really isnt,that bad of a deal,so taking a look at the packaging,its pretty much the exact same deal as,what it was 18 months ago you still get,the the free towel and the tool tray you,know and obviously as well as the tool,so visually taking a look at this tool,guys its very similar to the uh the,ones that i reviewed 18 months ago,honestly i dont have the old ones that,i reviewed previous because i returned,to the store like i said but uh you know,just taking a look at this thing,as far as i can tell it looks visually,identical to uh to what i reviewed in,the past so,first thing were going to do is im,going to tear this thing open and were,going to compare it to the old version,that i had in 2019 to see what sort of,changes they made inside the head,so taking a look at this picture i have,on the screen,this is the 2019 uh recalled harbor,freight icon ratchet so taking a look,here you know just get an idea of what,the paul looks like what the switch,looks like,and well switch pictures and well go,to the 2021 version so taking a look,here you guys can see theres a pretty,distinct difference between the two,designs they completely redesigned the,switch as well as the pawl,and,hopefully you know thats going to,alleviate the locking problem that we,had earlier so harbor freights main,target with this icon ratchet has always,been the snap-on ratchets,this one is the same one i had in the,previous video ive had this thing over,10 years at this point and ive done,literally nothing to it um,it just works i it is my main go-to,ratchet i pretty much use this thing for,everything,[Music],so as far as comparing the two obviously,you guys can see theyre extremely,similar,even you know the shape of the switch is,similar both the icon and the snap-on,both have the part number down here on,the bottom of the handle so its its,pretty obvious who uh,harbor freight is targeting with this,ratchet but uh lets go over the car,and uh you know start really torquing on,this thing and see,does it lock up like the previous,version i really hope it doesnt,so going back to the video about 18,months ago the way that i sort of you,know stress test the icon ratchet was i,put it on one of the lug nuts on my,truck and basically just tried to,tighten the lug nut i understand this,isnt the application for a 3 8 ratchet,but when youre stress testing a tool,thats how youre going to do it,nobody really cares how it loosens a,quarter 20 because,you know thats not really that hard on,the ratchet,so the other common comment that i was,getting was oh you should do that same,test with your snap-on i bet you your,snap-on would lock up in the same,situation,guys im here to tell you ive owned,this tool for 10 years,and you guys are probably right you know,i keep this thing in a velvet case,i really dont abuse this thing at all,and uh,you know i only really bring it out for,special occasions and you know glory,shots and youtube videos i dont abuse,this thing whatsoever,huh,and it still works imagine that,so were going to do the same test with,the icon,that we did 18 months ago,there is a considerable,considerable amount of flex in the,handle but uh,hey look at that still works i guess uh,18 months worth of research and,development actually uh,gives you a working ratchet thanks,harbor freight so one thing ive ran,into with uh using this icon like if i,if i put this thing on a bolt,and i really torque this thing down,and say put like 100 foot pounds on it,and really put some ass behind it,if i pull it off the bolt,[Music],ratchets locked up it will not move,i dont know if this is a defect with a,tool,or what the problem is but this is,something that ive never had happen,ever with my snap-on,now to break this thing loose the only,way that ive had success breaking this,loose,is basically put it back on a fastener,and try to ratchet it again and itll,break free,so as you guys saw i mean this this new,icon ratchet,you know definitely holds up um,you know obviously i dont have 10 years,worth of use like i do with the snap-on,to be able to say you know its a,a great tool,but,at this point you know my initial,impressions its as good of a tool as a,snap-on for about a third of the money,if i was in the market for a ratchet at,this point in 2021 i dont know that i,would buy either one of these,um actually what i would buy,probably actually be a set of gear,wrenches specifically the the 120 xps,i use this one in particular as an,industrial mechanic for eight years,and,it works great,[Music],the other nice thing about these gear,wrenches is you can buy the full set,meaning a quarter inch 3 8 like i have,here,a half inch and a 3 8 stubby for less,than 100 bucks,if you uh you know find the right place,to buy them,so theyre far cheaper than these two,and you can get a full set for uh,you know basically double the price of,the icon its actually,about 50 bucks cheaper than this one,snap-on,ratchet,so,if i was in the market for a ratchet at,this point in 2021,theres nothing wrong with the icon,theres nothing wrong with the snap-on,they just wouldnt be my first choice,honestly i would go to the gearwrench,you know back 10 years ago when i bought,this snap-on,the internet and amazon and internet,purchasing wasnt nearly as prevalent as,what it is today so if you wanted,quality tools you pretty much had to go,to the tool truck to get them um,now in 2021 you know obviously things,have changed a little bit,so guys thats my initial impressions on,the icon,version 2.0 flex head ratchet,ill have a link in the description Frosthaven Review – Improving on an Icon
hey everyone this is Jack from the,cardboard Herald and today we are taking,a look at that big bad nasty back there,yes Frost Haven the brand new sequel to,2017s Mega hit gloomhaven a game that,has long dominated the BGG charts as,well as been a massive crossover hit,with tons of coverage in video game and,other media Outlets bringing tons of new,Gamers into this hobby which is,considered one of if not the greatest,Dungeon Crawl game of all time let alone,one of the greatest board games of all,time so you could say expectations are a,little bit high for frost Haven and Ive,played the first couple of scenarios and,the related Outpost phases which is,important to some of this video as well,get to in a little bit and I can confirm,it,its pretty good its its a its a,really good game so because Im not,trying to get into all sorts of spoilery,territory other than the basic premise,of the game as well as some of the,necessary elements for you to have,contacts for what Im talking about,were going to keep it pretty casual,today and were going to start with just,what is Frost Haven or gloomhaven,because theyre theyre effectively two,implementations of the same system with,one expanding upon the original in,considerable ways but not in an,expansion Frost Haven is a standalone,release and intended to be played as,such so what is Frost Haven this is a,campaign-based Dungeon Crawl game where,you and other adventurers are banding,together to investigate the frosty,Mysteries of the Frozen North initially,from this town of frost Haven that you,stumble upon rest skew and then become,affiliated with as you go out and,discover more stuff and conduct more,scenarios tactical dungeon crawling,combaty scenarios which sometimes are,going to be affiliated with the story at,hand and sometimes are just optional,side quest stuff there are various,branching paths as you go about the gobs,of different scenarios that this game,comes with and there are Legacy,components to this as well sometimes,completing a scenario will gate out,other scenarios and there are all kinds,of different packets and envelopes and,boxes inside of the memothian box full,of content that only unlocks as you have,triggered whatever is necessary to,unlock it sometimes thats part of the,story progression sometimes thats part,of fulfilling a personal character Quest,that was randomly drawn at the creation,of that character which usually will,Mark the retirement of that character,allowing you to then access a new,character either starting one of the,original six or a new character that you,didnt initially have access to it is a,game that is in a lot of ways a hobby,unto itself because its got so much,content to ring out of it and in so far,of everything that Ive talked to up,until this point that same thing is true,for both gloomhaven and frost Haven,except,Frost Haven feels like its being,approached by a much more experienced,publisher and designer Everything feels,like theres much more intention on its,part and the place that shines through,the most is with your characters so the,game comes with six starting characters,that you can choose from it with,complexity is low mid or high and,already even the low complexity,characters feel so much better realized,and defined than the characters from the,original gloomhaven my team took the,death Walker Banner Spear and blink,blade and these characters even though,you still have a lot of freedom in them,in how you approach the game theres so,much more natural push to Intuit and how,to play these characters in the best,possible ways yes there are tons of,tactical scenarios yes you have a lot of,freedom and flexibility with the,starting cards that you have as well as,different abilities that you can swap,out with with more advanced cards and,then eventually level up into new,abilities with them already none of them,feel like Jacks of all trades I mean,take for example the banner spear my,character seems like your basic tank but,when you get to it this character has so,much tactical Nuance because a lot of,her abilities if you especially lean,into them are about positioning yourself,in relation to other characters you can,do pincer attacks you can hold the wall,right next to characters uh and you can,do this with both other player,characters or Allies that you can summon,which can be a basic Ally that you can,repeatedly summon throughout a scenario,if they die which they will die because,they are a little weeny but they give,you the posturing that you need to,complete a lot of these really,stupendous abilities but also you have,these banners that you can slap down and,then they give Boons to the other,characters on your team all of your,allies benefit from them and your,character the manner spear has the,ability to move allies around or Grant,movement to those allies that are,controlled by player characters so,theres a ton of Buffs tanking,sustaining a ton of damage and doing,these devastating attacks by posturing,yourself around to the environment and,the enemies in a way that is really,intuitive but also complex and great and,then theres the blink blade whos over,there doing some sort of resource,management terraforming Mars type game,by themselves because youre investing,and withdrawing these resources that you,are going to capitalize on for really,Advanced really fancy pants versions of,your abilities that gives you so much,flexibility and control I mean the blink,blade is all about flipping the cards,and then seeing what all the enemy cards,are flip so you can see what all of the,Clockwork thats going to happen on the,turn is and then choosing how youre,going to resolve your abilities to react,to that which is very complex very,complicated but also really stupendous,to see in action and is a great balance,between theme and mechanics its this,point of the Thematic intersection that,that just really brings that character a,ton of Life which the opposite of life,is the death walker deathwalker death,Walker is the death Walker who is not to,be confused with death stalker as I,always want to call them who puts out,these shadowy Inky blots across the,board that you manipulate and you can,use them to teleport across the board or,you can use them to attack from you can,summon shadowy demons from it is really,cool and gives a kind of stealthy,roguish approach to this character but,also at the same time feels very magical,and a Caster in nature in a way that is,not just your traditional archetype,which I love but again all of these are,really well defined characteristics and,capabilities from the get-go all of,these characters feel better defined,better realized and more nuanced than,compared to their original gloomhaven,starting counterparts which is so,welcome and so nice yes,pure tactical freedom is great but this,game throws a ton of complex heavy duty,complicated AI driven enemies at you and,you want the tools to feel heroic in the,face of all these challenges you want to,feel powerful and because the game does,feel like its ratcheted up some of the,threat it also gives you the tools to,mitigate that in really interesting ways,and thats kind of the through line for,my experience with this game and this,review is that it is more complicated,there is more to consider these,characters on their own are not basic,Bros you are having to make really,complex decisions with them but its,also Polished in a way that makes some,of those complicated decisions that,youre going to make more intuitive and,that continues on with the base building,element of frost Haven which is the,biggest surprise to me and the thing,that I did not anticipate liking nearly,as much as I have fallen utterly in love,with it so in gloomhaven the OG you,would play a scenario and then youd go,back to town then you might take care of,some leveling up stuff you might get a,couple items from the store blah blah,blah it felt like this is just the down,time before you go and actually play the,game again and that w

so we got three months on the icon tools,uh i told you guys i was gonna give you,an honest review,this i use every single day you guys,have seen it in all my videos the last,few months,ive been literally beating the living,hell out of this thing using it for,everything and this icon ratchet,i guess is the newer updated style,i find it actually better and closer,tooth wise than most ratchets its very,very nice love this thing,its giving me no problems at all,here i got the half inch stuff,use it all the time,absolutely love it,half inch drive,non-locking flex head,absolutely love it uh heres a quarter,inch im using on like literally,everything,super tight ratchet,i absolutely love these things,guys i work in the industry im not just,some guy doing diy stuff at home not,cutting them down at all but im saying,i abused the out of these every,single day impacts and all,its the 3 8 universal,just,no issues not a single issue at all,use it all the time using it last night,in last nights video when you guys see,me doing the oil change on that uh,that three liter,uh explorer,half inch drive universal not a single,issue no binding no nothing at all,didnt even grease these things i,havent even really wiped them off,obviously missing my 13 i have a problem,keeping 13s tens eights and sevens,um,i love these they they work well,im using them all the time no real wear,and stuff this i use every single day on,every single impact,absolutely phenomenal product,that just beat the hell out of them and,they last,always getting in these here,no signs of no real wear or anything,like that,its great great great,tools i cant say enough about how nice,these tools are,so,uh you know i have to give a huge shout,out to to harbor freight nikon thanks,for putting out a great product and,making an affordable reliable product,for guys that dont want to buy,expensive tool you know i have 170,ratchets like this from matco that i,love and i use i got ratchets from acted,you know i love and i use,very very good ratchet,but i do have i got older stuff i got,huskies and stuff like that that are 10,15 years old you know ive got stuff,even older than that here craftsman,stuff you know im not opposed to,anything,but what i am trying to tell you is,there are cheaper products,that seem to be im not saying they are,as good as,but like,lets compare real quick,this is like 170 ratchet 150 170 dollar,ratchet,i bought,this ratchet this ratchet and this,ratchet for probably right at 100,you know i think this ratchet here was,like 50 bucks this was like,or no this was like 40 bucks this was,like 40 bucks and this was like 25 bucks,or something,not even 25 bucks,anyway you get the point you know youve,seen it i bought all these tools and,then some for like 300 bucks total for,the sockets and everything,and,its just been a phenomenal experience,with them so far so i cant personally,say anything bad about icon i like the,product line,i think more technicians should uh try,them out and give honest reviews on them,and i use them every single day,purposely just so i can see how well,they last to give an honest review one,of my subscribers,hippie brought it up said look youre on,your three months would that be nice,time to do a review great review,outstanding product love it guys keep up,the great work
