PERT Reading Review – Synonyms

when taking your test you may come, across questions that ask you to find, synonyms synonyms are words that have, similar meaning they dont always have, the exact same meaning because there are, nuances or little differences between, words that may have overlap in their, meanings and so as youre looking at the, word and youre looking at the options, below one of the test-taking strategies, that you may find helpful is to go,through the choices that you have and, immediately eliminate those that you, know cannot be the possible answer and, that narrows the scope down until you,get closer to the actual meaning now, obviously if you know the answer you, always go with what you know but if,youre uncertain as to what the correct, answer is then this little strategy can,be helpful youre not looking for a,perfect synonym youre looking for, something that is a close synonym, something that has a similar meaning and, overlap in meaning even if theres some, slight nuances or little differences, between the words and so Ive got an,example on the board were going to go,over this just to try to illustrate this, briefly and hopefully this will help you, understand the test taking strategy of,looking for the close or nearly perfect, synonym if theres not one thats an,exact match so we have the word coward, and were looking for a word with, similar meaning to coward and here our, choices then below first one gutless, second one boor third one judge and the, fourth one brave now as youre looking,at the word coward and youre looking at,the choices we can automatically, eliminate one because its not a synonym, its an antonín its something with the, exact opposite meaning so brave can be,ruled out automatically we know someone, who is a coward is not brave so youve, got three choices left now I think the, word coward pretty sure its not the, word judge so we were absolutely certain,on this one were pretty sure on see now, were left with two answers weve, already narrowed the field weve got a,50% chance if we just had to outright, guess but as were thinking about the, word coward we think well you,the word gutless comes pretty close to,coward its not a perfect match but its, closer than more and maybe we already, know what bore a bore is you know, someone oh youre such a bore and were, not sure what that word is but we know, that gutless has some overlap and its, close and so if were having to guess, once again were not certain the answer,Im assuming for the case of our example, here that we dont automatically know, that a is the answer weve been able to,narrow it down by eliminating the, choices that we know are not correct and, when were left with two weve been able,to narrow it further by saying I know, theres enough overlap between coward, and gutless that were going to go with,a once again this is just an example to,illustrate a test taking strategy when, youre taking your test and you come to,the portion that has synonyms,if you automatically know the right, answer to go with the right answer but,if youre uncertain then basically just, start looking at the answers and, eliminate the ones that you know it,cannot possibly be until youve narrowed,it down to the ones that are, possibilities and then start looking for, overlap in meaning because often on,these tests theyre not testing your, ability to find a perfect synonym they, want you to be able to realize the, relationship between words and the, nuances between words the little, differences so that you can say this is,close to that meaning this is the one, that has at least some overlap even, though its not a perfect match so were, looking for merely perfect synonyms not,the perfect synonym when we take these, tests thats part of what the testers, are trying to gauge do you understand, the subtle differences between words not, just the one that say perfect matches in,a definition anyway I hope this has been, helpful for you as you take your test to,think through synonyms and looking for,the one thats closest or has some, overlap and meaning not the perfect, match but a close match and the strategy,of eliminating answers that you know, cannot possibly be the right one if,youd like to learn more about this and, other related matters beneath this video, youll find a link if youll click on,and itll take you to a website with, that information and while youre at,that website youll also find a link to,an e-book thats ready for immediate, download, you

3rd Grade Word Study Lesson and Synonym and Antonym Review

hi and welcome to our word study lesson,in synonym and antonym review video in,this video Im going to go ahead and, teach you how to break down words into, their smallest units of meaning so that,we can build that vocabulary and we can, better understand the text I will also, review synonyms and antonyms with you, lets get started these are the abyss of,the week we will read milkmaid, independently using Google classroom, were going to identify the suffixes the, word parts at the end of a word above, les full in a fiction text using Google, slides were going to type words with, the given suffix of all less full using, our benchmark ebook in Google Sites, were gonna classify these synonyms and, antonyms for the two words kitten, alright lets review so first Im going,to teach you a fancy word and the word,is of fixes can you say it of fixes, sorry group of letters and attached, before and after a word so we here Im,gonna go ahead and just lets focus on,the word is in black and then this word,is except the word except means to,receive correct but now lets go ahead, and add the prefix unn and the suffix a,bolt-on acceptable the word no longer, means to receive and no longer means to,accept now an acceptable means that that,is prohibited or not allowed or not, satisfactory so do you see how this, prefix and and the suffix of both, completely change the meaning of my word, well this is why were gonna go ahead, and word study were gonna study these, words so that we can better understand, our reading lets do some other term a,prefix is the word part that comes, before the root word before the base, words so this in this instance the, prefix of fun and it comes before a base, word,Suffolks is the work part that comes, after the base word okay in this, instance it would be colored green and,it is the word of all the base word is,also known as the root word and this is,the word thats usually on its own, without a suffix or a prefix, okay so the suffix is for the weak are a,bowl full unless youre probably, wondering why does miss a keep setting a,bowl for the word bowl well because this, word is not evil because its at the end,of a word and were gonna go ahead and,say a bowl, can you say it thank you so the bucket a,bowl is um something that is suitable, for okay or something that you can agree, upon so here Im gonna go ahead and give, you an example if something is edible is,suitable for eating and will not make, you sick so here were saying that, something is suitable something is okay, for us to e and this is because ascetics,a bowl means that its okay suitable for, right or something that you can agree, upon now we have the subjects home, the suffix full means notable for or,full up here are some words hand full, play ball, beautiful and topple and were going to,review these words in a second now we,have the suffix less less means with, that meaning less hope less homeless, mindless here we have some larger, examples and Im gonna go and review, these lets call it the first word and,the word is avoidable when you avoid, something youre not trying to lets, lets pretend that Im avoiding to go to,a party right at this time we are all, avoiding to go to party so Im avoiding,to go to this party so I will do any, right to avoid this party right so what,I am trying to say is that I its not,its not suitable I cannot go to this, party its not the right time right, theres a virus out um outside you know, some people are sick so Im trying to do,the best that I can, right enjoyable in this instance it,means that it is suitable for right, something that um that I that Im happy, for so oh my goodness this birthday was, enjoyable right I really enjoyed my,birthday okay and that is two different, examples so thats why I said a bull has,two different meanings okay suitable, form okay and we can also say something, that is capable something that you are, able to do okay full now we have the, suffix full okay when we say careful and, cheerful Im saying that its notable, for or full so when I say careful be,careful I am saying you must right you, must be careful or that person is full,of care she is so careful with her pets, rightful of the care or she is very, careful with her cooking right we,noticed that that person is very careful, with her clicking all right and and, another example that I actually wanted,it over here is the word hand lets, pretend theres a child at a park and, when someone says that child is a,handful we are saying that we are, noticing the bad child is mischievous a,lot of work okay, notable unless means this is probably, the easiest one to remember,I think as it just means without care or,less it means without care fearless, without fear, okay harmless without hard its a little, bit I think easier to remember and I,think full to I think a bowl is a little, bit we kind of have to see it read the, sentence so that we can better, understand the meaning and I think, thats that is what were learning this, week so I think oh I didnt teach you, some strategies during during your, reading okay Im gonna go ahead and, model identifying the word parts in a,word so its a success,Im gonna read particular word parts on,reading sentences and then text and Im,also going to be reading my sentences to,understand the meaning of the text okay,Im gonna go ahead and get started this, week were gonna redo the milkmaid in,the milkmaid youre gonna encounter, these suffixes that suffix a ball less, and fold okay I think go ahead and read, and read paragraph three and remember, that Im going the model what youre, supposed to do during your reading her, daydream grew more fanciful huh, fanciful Im not sure I know what that, word means but Miss a taught me the, suffix full so full of dancing well the, word of fancies is she talking about, riches here her daydream grew more, fanciful ah this person is using her, imagination in such a way that its full,of grandiose ideas big ideas right full,of just wonderful imagination imaginary, ideas Ill sell fresh eggs to countless,Bakers – she thought I count less, theyre both that suffix less which, means without without count many Bakers, okay my business will become quite, profitable profitable huh a bowl that, means that this persons, make tons of money my business will, become quite profitable right Im so,notable remember a bowl means notable, okay and youre noticing that this, somehow read my paper crap all together,so that I can make the most sense to me,hurt a dream grew more fanciful Ill,sell fresh eggs countless other Bakers,- she thought my business will become, quite profitable and my beautiful, clothes and valuable jewelry I might, even buy a sizeable house, everyone will be envious of me I wont, care Ill just toss my head and smile, did you see some suffixes in the rest of,this paragraph if you did I want you to,do it with witness a did I want you to,break down those words into their, smallest meanings that you can better, understand these words in the tax okay, friends now that we have I have modeled, this I have reread these words Im,booking them down into their smallest, meaning and Ive reread the text Im,gonna go ahead and review the next, activity on Google class youre gonna, read it well mate like I said previously, and youre gonna go ahead and do a,benchmark eBook um worksheet and youre, gonna go ahead and identify the words, that have a suffix les a bull and full, and youre gonna also use them in,sentences the sentences that make the, most sense to you this is all in Google, class now Im going to go ahead and, review synonyms and antonyms okay so,remember that synonyms are words that, have same meaning and antonyms are words, that have the opposite meaning so here,we have the word boring which means dull, and that is the same meaning or if we,say sad and gloomy same meaning and that,is a synonym okay that is the word that, are the words are the same, antonyms have the opposite meanings, boring exciting happy gloomy lets, review, hey synonym pretty beautiful or is it in,Antonin what is pretty and beautiful, think about it did you write it down, what about up and d

How to Improve Your SSAT Verbal Score: Synonym Strategies

synonym questions make up half of the, questions on the ssat verbal section for, these questions youll get a word, without any context and youll need to,match it to its closest synonym there, are two main strategies we can use when, improving these questions the first one,is to memorize vocab words and word, roots this is obviously going to help, you by increasing the number of words, you know and the ways you can break, words down into parts for any words you, dont know our second strategy is when, you are taking the test and you come to,a new question dont look at the answer, choices first instead after you read the, word in the question come up with your, own synonym to that word then use that, synonym to help choose the best answer, choice, lets take a look at an example question,to try out these strategies for our, first word we have the word desiccate, which my synonym for that would be to,dry out um often a context i think of,this is roadkill getting dry and crunchy,on the side of the road so now im going,to match this to the answer choices a,inventive definitely doesnt match b,dehydrate could match dry out c,invigorates basically the opposite d,deteriorate,if i hadnt come up with my synonym of,dry out i might have been tempted to,choose deteriorate especially as i,mentioned given that road till roadkill, context however its actually not the, closest word to desiccate so im going,to eliminate that and then e unworthy, also not related so that leaves us with, the word be dehydrated,so lets try out another example with, the word anachronistic so if youre not, sure what this means this is a great one,to try using word roots to break it down,if i look at the root kron i maybe think,of chronology, and know that this one means time, and then if i look at the word or the, root anna, this means back or against you can even, think about the word analogy and where, youre comparing two words against each, other um and that might give you a clue,to that one so lets go ahead and see, which words here have to do with backer, against time so temperate does not that, would be more with temperature b,entertaining does not see vivid does not, appropriate, could if we didnt have the anna root, right if it was something that was, appropriate or fitting for a time but, because we have that against we know, thats probably not going to be our best, fit, and were left with e incongruous for, congrue that kind of root think like, congruent in math where two things match,or line up and then this in root think, inaccurate means not if so something is,not congruent its not matching, that would actually seem like it matches,up well with our anachronistic word, which it does if something is,anachronistic it means that it is not, fitting for the time period its going, against what would actually be true or,appropriate think if you had a movie set,in a medieval time and suddenly a,starbucks cup appeared that would be,anachronistic, words are another really great thing to,use on our next example word of,fortuitous so if i look at this word i,can kind of break it down into my word, roots and think of for this one say, fortunate right it would be the same, order that 42 fortune root um and my,synonym for fortuitous would be either, something that is lucky or it could also,be accidental it doesnt necessarily, always have that really positive, connotation so if i go through my answer, choices using that lucky or accidental, synonym a pleasant well that could kind,of match up with lucky but it doesnt, have that chance sort of um meaning be,enraging definitely not c chance this, could be the noun chance right like you, took a chance on something or it could,be,the adjective form like a chance, encounter meaning, accidental maybe a little bit lucky so,that seems like a good sign d,unfortunate well that doesnt really, have anything to do with that luck piece, and then e ghostly probably not so that, leaves our best synonym as c chance,if youre ready to continue improving on,these synonym questions here are a,couple things you can do next first, continue using the strategies we,discussed in the video today especially, coming up with your own synonym for each, word before you look at the answer, choices its really going to help, improve your accuracy you can also make, sure that youre studying word roots, this is going to help you whenever you, dont know where its you can break down,a word into its parts and maybe come up,with a more accurate answer there are, many different resources online to give, you lists of word roots to study well, include some of our favorites in the, description of the video you can also, memorize new words this is obviously, going to help the more words you know, the more synonym questions youll be,able to answer correctly again there are, tons of resources online two of our, favorites are essential vocabulary and,504 words for the ssat well link those,in the description as well, now finally if youre just realizing, youre finding so many synonyms where, you dont know what the word means weve, got some help for that as well weve, recorded another video with synonyms, when you dont know the words and, strategies to help you out so watch that, next if youre ready to improve on those, questions
