The Sony X85J is a new upper mid-range TV from Sonys 2021 lineup that has a few good,features. But how does it stack up against the competition? Well be looking through,our test results to see if this 4k TV is worth its price and to find out if its a good mid-range,option.,Hi, I’m Kelsey a tester at RTINGS.com where we help you find the best product for your needs.,We bought the 55 inch model to test, but it is also available from 43 to 85 inches. We,expect these other sizes to perform the same. Check our Deal Page to see all available sizes.,Before getting into its performance, lets look at the design. The X85J has a simple,design that looks nice overall.,The X85J features the same stand as many other Sony TVs. It has deep feet that are wide apart,so youll need a big table to place it on. The stand supports the TV fairly well but,theres still some wobble.,The back has a chequered like pattern and is made of plastic. There are only clips on,the legs for cable management, and slots for VESA mounting.,The X85J has good build quality. Its made entirely out of plastic and theres no noticeable,issues with it, which is what you expect from an upper-mid range model.,Now, lets talk about the smart features. Sony TVs in 2021 use the new Google TV, which,is an upgraded version of Android TV but, its more of an aesthestic upgrade. Still,,the navigation feels very smooth and the Google Play Store has a ton of apps available to,download.,The X85J comes with the same remote as most other 2021 Sony TVs. Its large and features,a full numpad and navigation buttons. There are quick access buttons to popular streaming,apps and one for voice control. You can ask it to change inputs, search for content, or,change settings.,Before we dive deep into our test results, lets talk about how this TV performs overall.,For watching content in a Dark Room, The TV has a high native contrast ratio, so it produces,deep blacks. Its black uniformity is also amazing, with minimal blooming around bright,objects. Sadly, it doesnt have a local dimming feature to improve the dark room performance.,Also, it has accurate colors and wide color gamut which are great for watching HDR content.,If youre going to watch TV in bright rooms, you need it to get bright. Thats exactly,what it does as it has high brightness. It has decent reflection handling that should,be good enough for a room with a few lights, but strong reflections can get distracting.,For watching Broadcast or cable content, the X85J doesnt have any issues upscaling lower-resolution,content. Motion looks smooth thanks to its quick response time. The downside is that,it has narrow viewing angles, so its not the best choice for watching shows or sports,with a few people.,Theres good and bad news when it comes to gaming or PC use. The bad news is that it,doesnt have any gaming features like VRR support. The good news is that it should come,in a future update. Even without VRR, it still has low input lag and HDMI 2.1 inputs. If,you want to use it for PC gaming, it displays chroma 4:4:4, which helps with text clarity.,With our quick overview out of the way, lets dive into the details. Were going to look,at the good and not so good of the TV according to different usages.,The contrast ratio is one of the most important aspects of picture quality. This is the difference,between black and whites. Having a good contrast is important if you want the TV to display,deep and inky blacks when watching it in dark rooms. The X85J has a fantastic native contrast,ratio of over 6300:1. This means that it displays deep blacks, but sadly theres no local dimming,feature to improve it any further. Black uniformity on our unit is excellent with minimal blooming,around bright objects too.,Our unit has fantastic color accuracy, so the image looks like how the creator intended.,Sony TVs are known for their good accuracy so you soudnt experience any issues.,If youre watching HDR content, its important for the TV to display a wide color gamut,,which is the range of colors it can display. As for this TV, it covers a wide color gamut.,Another key thing to having good picture quality is HDR brightness. HDR stands for High Dynamic,Range and is a video format that enhances the details in highlights and shadows. The,X85J has decent brightness in HDR. It maintains its brightness consistent across different,content, which is great, but it still may not be enough to truly make highlights stand,out.,Now, if you want good bright room performance, Its important to get a TV that gets bright,enough to combat glare. This TV has impressive SDR brightness, so it should fight glare easily.,”You also want good reflection handling if youre going to use it in a well-lit room.,The X85J has a good semi-gloss screen finish and it has decent reflection handling. It,performs well with a few light sources around but reflections can get distracting if you,have strong light sources on it.,Now, for Broadcast content like TV shows and sports:,If you want to watch your favorite show or the big game with a few people around, its,important to have wide viewing angles. This helps make the image remain accurate when,viewing from the side. Sadly, like most VA panel TVs it has narrow viewing angles, so,the image looks washed out and inaccurate when viewing from the side.,If youre watching sports, especially ones with fast-moving players, the TVs response,time is a key factor. This is the time it takes for pixels to switch from one color,to the next and it affects motion. The X85J has a great response time so motion looks,good overall and even for gaming, it looks smooth . There are still some artifacts in,darker transitions though. The X85J has a flicker-free backlight, which,is great because additional flicker can cause some image duplication in sports, causing,you to lose track of the ball or puck. Theres an option to introduce flicker to try to reduce,persistence blur, which is called Black Frame Insertion, or BFI. However, that feature on,this TV only flickers at 120Hz, which could get distracting, and it also makes the screen,more dim, so its not for everyone.,For a responsive gaming experience, its important to have low input lag. This is the time it,takes to send a signal from your console to when the action appears on screen. The lower,input lag the better.,Luckily, this TV has very low input lag whether youre gaming at 60 or 120Hz. Its input lag,is a bit higher than some other TVs on the market, but the difference is minimal.,If you want a nearly tear-free gaming experience, its important to get a TV that has variable,refresh rate support. This technology matches the refresh rate of the TV to the frame rate,of the game, even if the frame rate of the game drops. Sadly, the X85J doesnt have it,yet. However its advertised to receive it in a future firmware update, but we dont,know when that will be. If thats important to you, there are other TVs with VRR support,like from Samsung, LG, and Hisense.,Thanks to the TVs HDMI 2.1 inputs, it supports 4k @ 120Hz gaming from the new Xbox series,x and ps5. However, this TV doesnt support 4k @ 120Hz in Dolby Vision from the Xbox.,This means you have to drop the refresh rate down to 60Hz if you want to use Dolby Vision.,Also, The TV doesnt have an Auto Low Latency Mode to automatically switch the TV into game,mode for low input lag. However, if you connect the TV to a PS4 or PS5, it recognizes the,consoles and automatically switches the TV into game mode. With other consoles, you have,to switch to Game Mode manually.,If you want to game in HDR, you still get low input lag. However, the HDR brightness,in game mode is exactly like outside game mode, which is to say: decent. It will make,some highlights stand out, but not all.,What sets TVs apart from monitors is their subpixel layout. you guys,are like me so youll probably be,interested in what ive got to say in,this video right here so today ill be,talking about this tv right here this is,the sony x85 j,75 inch tv its a 4k ultra high,definition tv ive been preparing for,the game which is coming up very soon so,if you guys are like me and or you know,preparing for that getting excited for,that then you need to get yourself a,large tv you got to get one of those big,tvs thatll get you that immersive,experience so ive teamed up with best,buy to bring you guys a review so this,tv has hdmi 2.1 as well if youre,interested in stuff like that for gaming,so ive had it for a couple of weeks now,and in that time ive been loving this,tv ive been loving it because i had,something very similar to this but it,was 65-inch tv a little smaller than,this and honestly you can tell the,difference before i dive into my review,of this ill let you guys know right now,that best buy has got a sick discount on,this tv right now like i said the game,is coming up so that means its time to,get yourself a large tv if youve been,waiting to pick up a large tv now is the,time for it first of all well talk,about how thin the bezels are on this tv,so that gives you that immersive,experience because theres nothing,thats in the way no obstruction when,youre watching tv or gaming on it,whatever it is youre doing theres less,you know,of the bezel to get in the way of that,immersive experience and thats key you,know at least for me its important you,know when im considering buying a tv it,has to have a thin bezel another thing i,love about this tv is the color so this,tv has hdr enabled already so if you,have a device that supports it and you,pair it with this say for example the,playstation 5 the ps5 has hdr or as an,hdr compatible device so if you use that,alongside this sony tv youre going to,get crispy hdr goodness so that means,higher quality images better color,reproduction you know color accuracy is,on point so the tvs maximum resolution,is 4k and the maximum refresh rate is,120 hertz if you want to utilize the 120,hertz refresh rate what you have to do,is make sure youre connected to hdmi 3.,so for example if you connect your,playstation 5 directly to this tv you,know using any of the hdmi ports except,uh hdmi port 3 its going to tell you,that in order to get the best experience,you have to be connected to hdmi 3. so,thats very important and thats super,cool right there and as soon as you,connect to it it sets you up,automatically it you know it changes the,tv mode from whatever its at to you,know game mode because theres multiple,tv modes that you can go through theres,vivid game mode theres a cinema mode so,depending on what youre watching itll,adjust the the color of the you know the,the screen to what youre doing another,cool thing about this tv is that its,got sound and image enhancement or,optimization so basically it will,optimize based on the room that youre,in so it can optimize the color and the,brightness of the tv based on the room,that youre in say youre in a dark room,itll reduce the brightness or if youre,in a bright room itll increase the,brightness so based on the lighting,conditions in whatever room you know,youve got it and for the sound,optimization say youve got objects in,front of you know the tv or youve got,blinds these things absorb uh sound or,to deflect sound but the tv will,optimize based on that location as well,so these are really cool,uh features that sony has you know put,into the tv and honestly will enhance,that overall uh view and experience you,know it makes it more immersive as for,connectivity options for this tv theres,four hdmi ports like i said before the,first two will only give you access to,regular 4k uh hdr content so 4k at 60,hertz uh if you want to access 120 hertz,for gameplay on your consoles your next,gen consoles or you know now current gen,consoles then youre going to need to,connect the hdmi 3. theres also two usb,ports as well as an optical output that,will allow you to direct the sound to a,sound system you know sound bar whatever,it is that you use the tv also has,bluetooth 4.2 as well as wi-fi,capabilities as you would expect on you,know any modern day smart tv now another,cool feature that i like about this tv,is that its got sonys technology,called motion xr so this technology,paired with you know a 120 hertz refresh,rate from this tv gives you crispy,smooth and buttery images so fast moving,scenes that you would see in video games,you know or sports and stuff like that,or even movies tend to look really,smooth this tv also works with all of,your voice assistants so your favorite,ones think google home think alexa think,homekit even you know from apple so you,can voice control it directly from the,remote control as well theres a button,on there that allows you to access,google home immediately so automatically,you hold on to it and you just talk to,it and you know it does it does its,thing and its also got google tv so,google tv is the software that this tv,runs on so you have access to all your,different streaming platforms think,disney plus think netflix think plex,doesnt matter what it is you have,access to all of that using the google,android um tv on the tv so thats,software theres also chromecast enabled,within the tv so you can cast directly,from any of your devices onto the tv you,know if youre trying to catch up on the,game or just highlights of the game then,you can definitely do that using your,phone so you just like cast it directly,from there i do it all the time seamless,process smooth and you get,very good quality you know the same,quality that you get off of the phone is,what you would get on the tv its also,got inbuilt speakers so two 10 watt,speakers uh you would find in this tv if,youre not going to be using it with um,sound bar or with the sound system,surround sound and whatnot,so its got dobby atmos and dobby vision,which are you know for sound and for,visuals so basically enhanced sound and,enhanced visuals so this tv just like,most of sonys recent uh 4k uhd tvs,along the same line has their,proprietary technology so x reality pro,and that x reality pro is amazing,because it upscales high definition,content so hd content to 4k content so,it makes it look like its 4k enhances,that 1080p you know quality and makes it,look like its uh 4k because some,content,arent shot in 4k so when theyre shot,in hd this tv will take that hd and,upscale it using x reality pro i think,thats pretty sick right there so youre,going to need that because whatever,youre going to be watching on this you,want the best quality right i know you,do so just like other sony tvs the,remote is very intuitive you know very,easy to use i love it,fits very nice in the palm of the hand,and im really glad theyve kept the,predefined buttons like netflix disney,plus amazon prime video and youtube so,that gives quick access to these apps,and thats extremely important,especially for someone like me that,tends to just want to you know get right,into whatever im doing honestly i would,definitely Sony X85J TV review with PS5 gaming and comparison with X80J and X90J

[Music],hey guys welcome to digit.in and what we,have for you today is our review of the,sony x85,j8 tv this tv is at a very interesting,position now the one that we have with,us for review is the 85 inch variant of,this tv but this tv is also available in,55 and 65 inch screen sizes so,why is it so interesting because if,youve seen our review we reviewed the,sony x80j some time ago and weve also,reviewed sonys x90j,uh as well and this model as the number,suggests is the,x85j and it falls right in between these,two with its features as well as its,performance which not only gives you,more options to choose from but actually,might make your buying decision a lot,easier based on what you are looking for,so if you are confused whether you,should go for the x80j x90j or the x85j,well this review should help answer a,lot of your questions and if you like,our reviews you may want to hit the,subscribe button and also hit the bell,icon so you are notified when we upload,a new video,so lets quickly get started with the,most important thing which is the,display panel and its picture,performance now this tv like i said is,available in three screen sizes but the,one we have to review is the behemoth 85,inch variant and it has an mop of 5 lakh,rupees but lets keep the price aside,for right now and just delve into the,performance it has a va panel uh it has,direct backlighting and it does not have,any dimming zones it has frame dimming,so just like the x80j it kind of tries,to dim the frame or to dim certain parts,of the screen for you know dark screen,performance and were going to get to,that in a second unlike the x90j which,has full array backlighting with local,dimming zones so first of all the peak,brightness of this tv is a lot higher,than what we saw on the x80j coming in,closer to 500 to 515 its of peak,brightness the x80j was in the ballpark,of a little over 400 around 400 and the,x90j could touch up to 700 in that,ballpark is where the x90j was for its,peak brightness so this should give you,a clear indication of where the x85j,lies closer to the 550 mark we could see,sustained brightness closer to the 400,uh nits mark as well,so it is brighter than the x80j but not,as bright as the x90j uh to put things,into perspective coming to uh the color,gamut of course as you can see from our,calman tests we did run a bunch of,different profiles on it we stuck to the,cinema profile which was closest to the,most accurate that we thought and we got,a,average delta error of about 10 which,might be slightly high but then again,this is without any calibration this is,just the preset out of the box and like,well tell you with our real world,performance this shouldnt be something,that should bother you simply because in,real world use this tv is,better than the x80j when it comes to,real world performance but,in the same way in a lot of ways now let,me explain that starting with dolby,vision content which is available on,netflix we saw shows like our planet,altered carbon and a few more now,altered carbon we cant show you the,footage for copyright reasons but the,warehouse fight sequence that we usually,use to check out its performance there,was good details in the dark areas and,the bright highlights in those fight,sequences were nice as well coming to,our planet from the bird coming into the,sun to take nectar from the uh tree all,the way up to the fishes in the water,there are a lot of good highlights even,the day night cycle it just has a very,rich bright color palette and that comes,across very well when we were consuming,content on this tv same goes for hdr 10,content when we are consuming content on,amazon prime video coming back to uh the,dolby vision content,like ive always said just leave it on,dolby vision bright and you should,really enjoy the content on this display,coming to hdr10 content on amazon prime,video we have shows like jack ryan which,uh the sequence that we use is in a,slightly dimmer area its uh darkly lit,so you can really see the low light,performance of the tv and weve seen a,lot of budget tvs struggle out here but,this tv gets the job done well when it,comes to the details in these sequences,coming to the grand tour again you have,these cars running around the desert and,this sequence is also really enjoyable,and even though its an hdr 10 we,preferred keeping it in the standard,preset the same is said for sdr content,we saw shows like young sheldon,spiderman homecoming mission impossible,and the standard preset really seemed to,give a good color reproduction overall,for what we were consuming yes switching,over to the cinema preset did add the,warm tone to it and i would recommend,you go into the settings and switch the,auto backlight off and put you know just,let it be as bright as it can be because,it gives you a better punch even for sdr,content maybe in a dark room it might,get too bright but for a well lit room,you just might want to put off the auto,backlight for uh the tv so you know you,get a nice bright picture,the cinema preset has the warm tones to,it but it is the standard preset that i,kept reverting back to because it just,had more punchy colors to it for some,reason despite having a slightly cooler,color temperature so thats something to,keep in mind so if you really want the,actual cinematic experience you might,want to switch to cinema and of course,this goes back to the poll we put out,some time ago asking you guys what,preset you use on your tvs and majority,of you said standard and it just makes,sense that sony would put in the effort,to make the standard preset the one that,actually looks best across a variety of,categories and for the enthusiast in you,you can always go back and change it now,moving over to gaming now this is,another place where we enjoyed this tv,and it has some advantages over the x80j,because it has two hdmi 2.1 ports with,4k at 120 hertz so this tv has a 120,hertz panel and just like the x90j it,comes with two ports for hdmi 2.1,connectivity uh which is not there on,the x80j that has only earc and it has a,panel refresh rate of 60hz so the,advantage that you get to the x85j is,using the hdmi 2.1 ports when we,connected our ps5 you can see that we,got rgb hdr instead of the yuv422 that,we got on the x80j uh for example and,the colors when you play games on this,tv was just an absolute treat i mean,goes to sushima directors cut which is,a beautiful game in hdr of course the,sequence that we captured right now the,weather changed to a little bit of rain,and gloom but when we were playing this,game for some time on this tv we did,have those bright areas where you can,ride the horse into the sun and have a,few battles and it was just a treat,another game with really good hdr which,were showing you right now is,spider-man miles morales where if youre,swinging towards the sun you get this,beautiful soft hdr implementation of the,picture and its just a treat to see,the details in this,game especially when youre fighting,with the dark in spider-man suit to the,vibrant colors that happen when you take,on some of the enemies in this game this,tv is just a lot of fun to play games on,dirt 5 another great example of an hdr,game we put the games hdr settings to,its default settings and you can feel,the punchy sun come into the racetrack,while we were you know enjoying the race,and same of course for ratchet and,client another game which has a lot of,vibrant colors and the television,recognized the ps5 it put the tv in game,mode on its own and this may not happen,if you have an xbox we have noticed this,sometimes on some sony tvs but you,recognize the playstation 5 and switch,to the game mode automatically the only,thing we would recommend is you go into,the settings and switch on the enhanced,mode for the hdmi port like three and,four which support 4k at 120 hertz so,you can get rgb hdr when youre,consuming content from an external,source so
