Hitchens delivers one of his best hammer blows to cocky audience member
if anyone thinks that theres a question, having was heard me,who thinks is a question I answered, poorly or inadequately or badly or,failed to answer at all I would like to,challenge me Id happily give them five, minutes but Ive I have to say shot my,belt otherwise it is there anyone who, would like to charge me yes please if,there is no God why do you spend your, whole life try to convince people that, there isnt why dont you just stay off,was the repeat that was the question the, question is if there if there is no god,why spend your life and career trying to,refute that why not just leave it alone, and stay home fair enough well its its,not my it isnt my whole career for one, thing its become a major preoccupation,of my life though in the last eight or,nine years especially since September,11th 2001 to try and help generate an,opposition to theocracy and its, depredations internationally that that, that is now probably my main political, preoccupation to help people in,Afghanistan in Somalia in Iraq in,Lebanon in Israel to resist those who, sincerely want to encompass the, destruction of civilization and, sincerely believe they have God on their, side in wanting to do so,the thing maybe I will take a few, minutes just to say something that I,find repulsive about especially, monotheistic messianic religion in it,with a large part of itself it quite, clearly wants us all to die it wants, this world to come to an end you can, tell the yearning for things to be over, whenever you read any of its real texts,or listen to any of its real authentic, spokesmen not the sort of the pathetic, apologist who sometimes masquerade for,it those who talk there was a famous, spokesman for this in Virginia until, recently about the rapture say that, those of,who have chosen rightly will be gathered,to the arms of Jesus leaving all the, rest of you behind if were in a car,its your lookout that car wont have a,driver anymore if were if were a pilot, thats your lookout that plane will, crash we will be with Jesus and the rest,of you can go straight to hell the the, eschatological element that is,inseparable from Christianity if you, dont believe that there is to be an,apocalypse there is going to be an end a,separation of the sheep and the goats a,condemnation final one then youre not, really I believe it and the contempt for,the things of this world shows through, all of them its well put in an old, rhyme from a an English exclusive, brethren sect, says that we are the pure and chosen few,and all the rest are damned, theres ruin up in hell for you we dont, want heaven crammed you can tell it when, you see the extreme Muslims talk they, cannot wait they cannot wait for death, and destruction to overtake and, overwhelm the world they cant wait for,for a what I would call without, ambiguity a final solution when you look,at the Israeli settlers paid for often,by American tax dollars designed if they, can steal enough land from other people, and get all the Jews into the Promised,Land and all the non-jews out of it then, finally the Jewish people will be worthy,of the return of the Messiah and there, are Christians in this country who, consider it their job to help this, happen so that Armageddon can occur so,the painful business of living as humans, and studying civilization and trying to,acquire learning and knowledge and, health and medicine and to push that can,all be scrapped and and the cult of,death can take over that to me is a,hideous thing in eschatological terms in,end times terms on its own hateful idea,a hateful practice and a hateful theory, but very much to be opposed in our daily, lives where there are people who, sincerely mean it who want who want to,ruin the good relations that could exist, between, from peoples nations racist countries, tribes ethnicities who say who openly, say they love death more than we love, life and who are betting that with God,on their side theyre right about that,so when I say is the subtitle of my book, that I think religion poisons everything,Im not just doing what publishers like, and coming up with a provocative, subtitle I mean to say it infects us in,the you know our most basic integrity it,says we cant be moral without Big,Brother without a totalitarian, permission means we cant be good to one, another means we cant think without, this we must be afraid we must also be,forced to love someone who we fear the, essence of sadomasochism at the essence,of abjection the essence of the,master/slave relationship and that knows, that death is coming and cant wait to,bring it on I say this is evil and, though I do some nights stay home I,enjoy more the nights when I go out and, fight against this ultimate wickedness, and ultimate stupidity thank you
The Story of J.R. Charbonneau
for much of its history the monster mile,at dover international speedway has seen, some unusual drivers and teams fill out,the field after all this was the site of,jd mcduffies only poll jody ridleys, only win and freddie crawfords only, last place finish each of these drivers, tell an interesting story most often, last place battles of years past i,recently picked up some old slides from, the dale and janice rossi collection, many of which depict some of these, unusual teams today im talking about, one perfect example a driver named james, rawlin jr charbonneau,on september 19 1982 charbonneau made, his only career cup start in the crc, chemicals 500. he was from spokane, washington which was still rare in the, sport at the time the only surviving son,of a latin teacher and a math teacher, charbonneau raced cars and hydroplanes, and also flew helicopters, friends said he built fixed and drove, most any mobile craft man is devised, except trains,he also had a day job as president of,spokane amc jeep in june of that year he,was featured proudly in this newspaper,ad,charbonneaus opportunity in nascar came, through none other than buck baker the,two-time cup series champion who had run,his last cup race in 1976.,four years later baker opened the buck, baker racing school which in the years,to come would hold courses at seven, tracks including dover by 82 baker had, also returned to team ownership, something he hadnt done since 1971.,fielding the same number 87 that he,campaigned for much of his driving, career the buck baker racing team made, its return at pocono on july 25th 1982,behind the wheel of their pontiac was,tom hessert jr father of tom hessert iii, todays six-time winner in the arc of,menard series, tom jr finished next to last that day at,pocono out with steering problems after, eight laps edging him by a single lap,was jody ridley the first last place, finish of his own career, like charbonneau this turned out to be,tom jrs only career cup start, two months later charbonneaus run at,dover was the next start for the baker, team its likely though not entirely, clear that charbonneau had graduated, from bakers racing school if so the, lessons certainly helped the rookie, qualified 25th in the 35 car field, clocking in at,130.477 miles per hour this put him, ahead of multiple owner drivers, including jd mcduffie jimmy means james, hilton and jocko majacomo racing, currently lists charbonneaus car as a,buick but as you can see from this slide,it is again a pontiac,a couple interesting details youll, notice in this picture first the car is,listed with buck baker racing school as,primary sponsor but theres only a small, decal on the sea post second of course,is the noticeable damage and the, concrete dust on the white rims to find, out what happened you only need to watch, the opening seconds of diamond p sports, first installment of their famous video, series and they walked away j.r,charbonneau got himself off track on the, back straight and learned firsthand how,it got the nickname i talked to it well, they call this the monster mile what do,you think after running it down, well ill tell you it is a whole lot of,fun the second slide shows charbonneau, pulling out of pit road indicating he,attempted to continue despite the damage, suffered in that accident hed, ultimately complete 118 laps before he,fell out leaving him 32nd three spots, out of last place he took home just 650,dollars in winnings,in 1983 spokane amc jeep changed, locations and charbonneau also started, selling renaults, the company would sponsor asa races at,the northwest speedway where he was, listed as among the big names with the, likes of don dowdy ron hall and chad, little racing reference lists his five, nascar northwest tour starts in 1985,with the best finish of eighth in yakima, driving a pontiac sponsored by his own, dealership in 1987 he was also entered,in the stock car portion of the copper, world classic in phoenix, meanwhile buck baker would continue to,feel cup cars on a part-time basis, through the 1992 season most often for,his son randy baker brother of 1980,daytona 500 winner buddy baker, randys best finish would come in 1987,when he finished 17th in the coca-cola,600. he fared even better in arca, finishing eighth one time each on the, super speedways in daytona and talladega, today randy continues to operate his, fathers racing school which is now, known as buck bakers seat time racing, school, last year on june 26 2020 j.r,charbonneau died at age 78 two years, after his wife kaye to whom he was, married for more than 50 years his, obituary reads jim is remembered by his, friends and loyal neighbors as being a,man who would do anything for his family, and his pets it was living life with the, excitement of a child who would plow, your driveway when you needed it would, buy you almonds just because he saw it,was your snack of choice who would pay,you extra to give his beloved dog tori a,treat and who would take the time to,find out how your day was going this is,the story of the real jr and shall live,on superseding any other published, material, every driver who has even once fired the, engine on the grid of a nascar stock car, race is a story of their own one that, extends well beyond where they actually, finished and i look forward to,presenting more of these stories in,future videos,in america there exists a sport that is,driven by the fans, they are why everyone works so hard on,the teams and at the tracks in front of,the grandstands and behind the scenes to,give the fans the greatest race possible, nascar fans deserve the best starting, from the high banks of daytona all the,way to the shores of california and at,every race in between, nascar fans youre the reason for our, success, thanks

Ep 7- Lisa Ahenakew: Domestic Violence death
hi everyone its jasmine on todays, episode of the slain project i will be,talking about the murder of lisa hennike, she was set ablaze by her boyfriend back,in july of 1992.,also if you would like to watch more, videos of missing and murdered, indigenous people please consider, subscribing to my channel lets get, right into it,lisa ahanakew was born on july 16th,1966 to melvin and della ahenicue, they were chippewa cree and lived in,great falls montana, lisas mother della was born and raised,in hill 57 in the year 1942.,this was a community for the stricken, cree, matey and ojibwe also known as chippewa,on the outskirts of great falls, some were from the rocky boy reservation, others were from canada and some were, from the little shell tribe, the accommodations were meager here, people lived in shack type homes tents, and some even lived in their cars, missionaries used to visit the, settlement to deliver donated food and, help some residents learn to read, they also documented that some, households had lead poisoning, when the nation defense authorization, act was passed in december 2019,the little shell tribe was able to gain, federal recognition status, they purchased hill 57 and surrounding, area and now use the area to raise, cattle and grow wheat, this food sovereignty program now allows, them to provide food for their tribal, members people no longer stay at hill,57.,the henna cues were a large family lisa, had seven sisters and three brothers, melvin della and their children would, eventually move to spokane washington in,october 1979.,lisa would be 13 years old at the time,of this move, spokane is the largest city between, minneapolis and seattle,a lot of different tribal members from, various tribes have relocated to this, area looking for better opportunity, lisas family have described her as a,friendly shy smart and loner type of,person, she always went off by herself and did,her own thing,in her mid-20s she would eventually meet,a man by the name of jose cerino who was,39 years old,he was not a good man and would often be,lisa, her described personality would make her, more at risk being around a man like, jose,he was able to gain control over her and, influence her life, lisa was homeless and unemployed her, mother lived a few blocks from jose in,an area known as browns edition, she would stay there sometimes or with, other family and friends,a lot of people cared about her and she,had no trouble finding a place to sleep,or eat,in the early morning of july 8 1992 lisa, was at joses apartment and they were, huffing gas from a milk, jug neighbors have stated that they seen, her leave his apartment the previous day, with a large cut above her eye,she would eventually go back to his, place where they would argue again, reports on the exact time vary but at,some time between 6 and 6 30 a.m,a neighbor by the name of frank harrell, heard lisa yell no a couple times, outside of the apartment complex, when he looked out his window he seen, lisa engulfed in flames and jose running, away, frank immediately grabbed the blanket, and went out to get the flames off lisa,he fumbled with the doorknob a bit, because he was in such a frantic, situation,he covered lisa and she began to roll on,the ground frank ran back into the house, and called,911 he came back and peered inside the, blanket, flames shot outward towards him,at about this time jose came back with a,bucket of water and they were able to,finally extinguish the fire, while medics worked on lisa she sobbed, and pointed at jose, while at the hospital doctors determined, lisa was burned on 40 percent of her, body and the torso and arms were the, areas most burnt, breathing in the hot air and fumes, severely damaged her lungs, she was flown from spokane to seattles, harborview medical center, here she would be able to get the best, care possible at their burn center, investigators began questioning jose, immediately,he said that lisa doused herself with, gasoline and a spark from his cigarette, lit her on fire,he also stated he was drunk at the time,of this tragic event, burnt matches found at the scene matched,up with a matchbook found in joses, apartment, jose was arrested the next day on july 9,1992. he was charged with first degree, assault, lisa was at harborview and was in a coma, she woke up,one time in a month just for a few, moments, she fought hard and, hung on for as long as she could, lisa died on august 7 1992 at the age of,26.,her family was deeply saddened but were, grateful that she was no longer, suffering, she was brought home to great falls and, buried at the mount olivei cemetery, joses charges were bumped up to,second-degree murder as the legal, process progressed joses charges were, pleaded down to first-degree,manslaughter for the violent and, horrific death of lisa ahenikew,he was sentenced to seven years and six, months as a part of his deal he was to,be eligible for parole after five years,he was eventually released and approved,to move to new jersey after only serving, four years and two days, the legal process angers me so much, sometimes justice never prevails in some, cases,to me it sounds like maybe lisa was, going to leave jose for good and he made, sure that she would never leave him, sort of like,if i cant have you nobody can,i personally believe she was leaving, after an altercation with him and he,chased after her with the gas cannon, matches,i know back in the day law enforcement, didnt take domestic violence as serious,as they do now, with the conviction for first degree, manslaughter it seems as if they, believed his story about this being an,accident and lisa dousing herself with, the gas, even though the neighbor reported she,was yelling no as in stop dont do it,inhalants are an often overlooked area, when it comes to speaking about the drug, problems that plague the native, population,on many reservations in the us and, canada, inhalants are often abused, some use gas, other used spray paint,i have also heard stories of young, children, trapping exhaust fumes in paper bags,it is an easy and cheap way to get high, many who abuse inhalants are still very, young, they are damaging their brains while it,is still developing, but unfortunately, they use this as a way for them to feel, escaped from their life troubles,i am deeply saddened that lisa saw her,own death coming i am sure lisa knew she, needed to change her life when she was, lying in the driveway crying but she, never recovered lisa never got a chance,to turn her life around it was too late, for her,the sentence jose received was, disgusting it was sending a message that,it is okay to hurt indigenous women, without any real consequences,i can only hope that he never went on to,hurt or kill, any other women,im going to leave a link in the, description box for the national, domestic violence hotline for the u.s,their website has great education on,domestic violence, they have options to call, text or live chat with a trusted, domestic violence advocate, the website is www.thehotline.org,there is also a section for native, americans under the get help tab, survivors family and friends can contact, them if they have concerns about a loved, one, the site works just like the national, domestic violence site, the website is,strongheartshelpline.org,for canada i believe the website is,endingviolencecanada.org,all of these will be linked in the, description box down below,if you are seeking help for yourself or,a loved one please do not hesitate to,reach out to one of these great, resources, the websites will help you identify if,you or a loved one is experiencing, domestic violence, they will direct you, where to go for help,if you are in need of immediate, assistance please call 911.,even if you have a cell phone that does, not have service 911 can still be dialed, out on the phone, and even if you cannot talk you can, still call, and they can more than likely trace your, location, please keep lisa and all the others who, have experienced and are currently, experiencing domestic violence in your, thoughts and prayers, thats all i have for todays video i do,these videos

Whats the News? Exploring News Resources
hi,everybody welcome to another one of our, awesome tech videos i am paige libert,im one of the consumer technology, specialists here at midcontinent public, library, and today were going to talk about, whats the news were going to explore, some of the news resources,or specifically current news or,newspaper resources, that we have available here at,mid-continent public library so todays, topic, where to find some of these resources, and then kind of a quick overview of,a few of the resources were going to,try to go through quite a few of them, but some of them are going to start to,look kind of similar so,well kind of get into that so what, youre going to need to kind of access, these resources youre going to need a,computer or a mobile device, most of them do not have an app there is,one that im not going to go into in,depth today that does,um that is press reader but most of them, dont have a mobile app but you cant, access them, through your browser on your mobile, device if you have an,iphone that can be your safari browser,on most androids thats going to be,chrome,so any of those youre welcome to use,you will need an internet connection, that can be your mobile connection it,can be wi-fi it can be hard-wired,you are welcome to come in and use the, librarys computers at our branches,if you do that you will need your mcpl, access pass which is your library card, number, and your pen which should be your eight, digit birthday, you may also be asked to log in to any,of these resources,if youre trying to access them from, home as i go through them youre going,to see that i dont get asked to log,in that is largely because i am working, from a library, network so if you are working from your, home connection that is,possible that youre going to be asked,to log in as youre working,so with that im going to just hop right,in so here i am this is the, mcpl homepage hopefully you guys are, familiar with this, now there are a few different ways to,get to these resources im going to,focus on one specifically, but once you get to know the resources, that you like uh there are some ways to,get there so im gonna go to the, research and learning tab,um so as i was saying so the a to z list,is,kind of your friend if you know where, youre going so you can go in there, click on that if you know the specific, resource, youre after you can just click on the, letter thats associated and go straight,to your resource i,on the other hand im going to go to,browse subjects,im going to scroll a bit im going to,try and move this somewhat slowly so i,dont make you guys dizzy as i go,im going to scroll all the way down to,newspapers which is actually pretty much, right at the bottom, and im just going to click on v,resources and that takes you into our,big list of all the different newspaper, resources that we have not all of these, are current, they try to give you a pretty good, description of what is going on,um what each one does so like new super, archive here is kind of new, newspapers coming from over 400,different cities, some of these are older so theyre like, theyre theyre geology related,or genealogy not geology genealogy, related,um resources so theyre going to be,focused more on historical newspapers, and older articles or just sections like, that obituaries and death notices one, they may be situated in specific areas, but were just gonna im gonna scroll, through here so you can kind of see, whats here, and get an idea before i jump into one,of these resources, directly so decent number of resources, here,um any of these that you are interested,in going into all you have to do is just, click on them,uh on their title and that will take you, straight to the resource if you click on,more info thats just going to bring up,well here thats going to bring up more, information about the resource,so you can kind of get a bigger blurb, get a better understanding of what, youre going to find when you go,in there so im actually going to back,up and im going to click directly on,the title of access world news this is,the first one i kind of want to get into, today, and so access world news is brought to,us by newsbank,um it is current and historical so these, are not all going to necessarily be,yesterdays news or todays news you, cant find stuff, thats a little bit older, but it is a nationwide so its not just, going to be local you can find stuff, from all across, the nation is also worldwide so if you, need some world news, you can do that so if you really want to,read the london times,i do believe that might be a resource, that you have access to,today im going to just click on a few, different things to show you so right, here you can do,a keyword search so you can do names, events topics, whatever you want there are more search, options if you want to narrow it down a,little bit more, you can do that and let this load up for,a second so you can see what that looks, like, generally this is called the advanced, search but you can get in there, and do a more specific search if you, want,so you can search by field which is kind,of your keyword search but then you can, also search by,if you know an author if you know a,caption,if you know the article type the title,of the actual article you want to read, you can do those sorts of things as well,i am just going to go and do,a basic keyword search i well do,oh well just do coven this is,a distressingly popular topic right now, give that a search and so with that, basic search its going to bring up,everything, this article is set as november 2020 so,this ones coming from the future so,thats cool,so some of these are going to be look, like theyre coming from the future the, atlantic,is a magazine or a periodical, this is already out but this is for the, november issue, which is why it is coming up as november, looking like its from the future,it is not actually from the future but, when you do these searches it does bring,up,things other than newspapers so you can,see that theres audio theres blogs, theres journals magazines newspapers, are right here there are still two, million, and change of them so not exactly a,small number, but just a heads up there that some of,these resources may not be,a newspaper so im going to go back,to just the main home page i do want to,show you a couple of things while im,here,so they have the suggested topics so,thats how you can kind of see, that this is modern or current, news because theyve got the 2020 u.s,presidential election race right there, which is booming right now im actually, going to click on international issues, and then you can kind of come in here, and start to see all the different, options so you can kind of pick a,country or pick an area of the world,im going to do health and coronavirus,or copen19 just because again, popular topic right now and if i do that, and see its going to be global or,international it kind of populates that, advanced search for us,and you can see that this is coming from, all over the world so this is a resource,so africa top sports,um this ones coming from france, some of these are not going to be in,english so that is something else to,kind of,pay attention to as youre going through, here um you may find, articles and newspapers that are not in,english,so you can kind of come over here on the, left hand side im scrolling past and i,kind of pointed out earlier the source, type,so ima click newspaper just to narrow,it down, this left hand side is basically your, filters,so you can set up filters however you, want, you can see that articles right now are,2003.,that is not necessarily the case looks, like theres an article from 2003 but, most of them are going to be,more recent as you can see theres just, like a,handful of them here and there they may, have been talking about a coronavirus, but not necessarily the one that we are, currently dealing with,um you can do the dates so i have set it,down so its just newspaper so thats, all thats here, you can also do by ear the source, location, the lexile which is the readability so,how easy it is to read, and then language down here at t
