Whats The Story? Book Review: State of Terror by Hillary Rodman Clinton & Louise Penny
its time to go on to our next book, after a tumultuous period in american, politics a new administration has just, been sworn in secretary of state ellen, adams is determined to do her duty for,her country but she is about to face a,horrifying international threat a young, foreign service officer has received a,baffling text from an anonymous source, too late she realizes it is a hastily, coded warning then a series of bus bombs, devastates europe heralding the rise of,a new rogue terrorist organization who, will stop at nothing in their efforts to,develop their own nuclear arsenal as an,unravels the damaging effects of the, former presidency on international, politics she must also contemplate the, unthinkable that the last president of,the united states was more than just an,ineffectual leader was he also a traitor,to his country its state of terror by,hillary clinton and louise penny im,already gripped trina mccarthy what a,book, can i just say,i was in the state of terror which is,the name of the book when i was told, this was the book i was going to read i,was like a political, mystery thriller oh my goodness um even, though ive been a journalist for nearly,20 years yeah i write about the really, important stuff like whats the blackest, mascara the lipstick that is best worn, under your mask and things like that i,would not be known for things like, political thrillers im not even great, with irish politics never mind american, politics and obviously im aware of,hillary who hillary clinton is and like, thumb through like her memoirs and i was, aware of louise penny whos this, canadian um award-winning uh,new york times number one best-selling,author,and i get the book and im like, you know,i was kind of being stubborn going i,really dont want to read this its not,its out of my comfort zone um and then,i slowly kind of started to get into it,and to like it because ellen adams whos, the secretary of state,um you have to remember obviously, hillary clinton was the 67th look at me,now my insider knowledge of american, politics was the 67th uh secretary of,state so,she bases obviously the character on her,and her kind of you get kind of these, like behind the scenes that only an,insider would know about these things so,it kind of sucked me in there and, actually speaking of sucking in she, actually the character wears spanx as,well and drinks chardonnay so i was like, okay, politicians can actually be quite normal,as well and i can relate to them as well,so i started to yeah because in the, beginning it was all very confusing but,i kept going its quite a big book as,well it goes all over the place from, afghanistan to iran you know theres the,the douglas williams whos the president, and hes um,hes hired ellen adams the kind of the, strong independent woman that she is um,but shes actually his arch enemy so,thats really intriguing whats going on,there and as i said i really get, immersed in a book so like today im,wearing my power suit as well because,im a strong independent woman that, knows knows so much about american, politics now but um there was also some, really interesting little things that i,found out as well, because like that you were saying with, your book that you would you know the, urge to look on wiki yeah ellen adams um,her confidence and her best friend in,the book is a lady called betsy and i,remembered reading an interview, with hillary clintons real best friend, who was called betsy as well so actually, even though the book is all about you, know an examination of um terror and of,hate its actually about courage and, love as well because betsy is the is is,hillary clintons real best friend in,real life and she based the character, betsy whos our advisor in the book on,her because they met when they were in,junior school together and they had a,real love of books together and sadly, betsy died of breast cancer in 2019 i,think it was and so she asked her, daughter and her husband could she, basically you know, base this character on her real life, best friend so that then absolutely drew,me in and it gave her just such a lovely, understanding to the character she, became way more real as well and so even, though its a political thriller dont, let that put you off its a really you, know as i said its about love its, about courage its about you know, overcoming obstacles its about strong, independent women its about it its, really like a,you know a guide for dummies you know, that dont know about politics and like,i feel now that you know when im,sitting around id be like yes so you, know the last secretary you know i have, way more to talk about now before id be,like yeah yeah yeah can we move on to,talking about whered you get your top,or you know like i i feel like its, really kind of enhanced my my,conversation even and some of my,vocabulary as well and thats whats, great about reading isnt it thats, whats incredible about it i think i,love what you said there because you, know i think a lot of people would see a,cover of a book and maybe just read the, synopsis and think okay this is going to,be really heavily political not my scene, but after listening to you know im like,oh wait a second yeah theres so much, more to this there and then you will be,gripped because it just it goes all over, the place and youre sometimes thinking,is that really whats going on or not,you know so it its keeping you on the, edge of your seat as well and youre, kind of diving into their personal, stories and sometimes youre going you, know am i getting this and then and then, theres a big twist you know and then, theres something else coming down the, line its honestly edge of the seat, stuff and i finished it and im so proud,of myself and you know i just you know, next time i meet hillary now i have to,commend her on her her book whenever im,hanging out with some american politics, you know politicians even yeah and i,think were going to be seeing you, reporting outside dollar next,[Laughter],[Music]

Hillary Clinton’s New Book Features a Character Inspired by a Certain Politician
-Our next guests are the co-authors,of the political thriller “State of Terror,”,which is out now.,One is an award-winning best-selling author,,and the other is a former senator, secretary of state,,and the winner of the 2016 popular vote.,Please welcome to the show Louise Penny, and Hillary Rodham Clinton.,[ Cheers and applause ],♪♪,♪♪,♪♪,Welcome to the show!,-Real people!,-Real human beings. -Real human beings.,-Not bad, right? Not bad.,Well, were very — were very lucky to have you both,on a night that the audience is here.,Congratulations on the book. -Thank you.,-Youve written nonfiction.,Louise, you have written mysteries.,This is a thriller.,Its a little different for both of you.,How was your collaboration process?,-It was fabulous, I have to say.,You know, Louise and I were friends, before the idea was presented to us,,and I really came to know her, through her amazing series, the Gamache series,,that I just loved.,And when the idea was presented,,I think both of us were, you know, a little –,you know, wondering, how would this work?,Cause we were friends.,We didnt want to undermine our friendship.,And so we dove into it and we started working on outlines.,-Well, we tried to figure it out, didnt we?,Like, what are we going to write about?,And, you know, we thought, first of all,,if youve got a secretary of state,,maybe you dont want to write about,a secretary of transportation.,-Right.,-So that was clear, but the rest of it wasnt.,-Did you ever say, “You know, we could also write, about a Canadian mystery author”?,-Yes, I did! And Hillary kept nixing it.,-Yeah. -Classic Hillary.,-That was classic Hillary. Exactly. Yeah, exactly.,So then there were times when we were –,because this was in the pandemic, right?,So we couldnt even get together.,So we were doing FaceTimes, and, “What about this and what about that?”,And then there were times we got ourselves so confused,,we thought each others screen had frozen, cause we were just staring at each other.,Like, “Where do we go from here?”,-We had these dreams before the pandemic, that, you know, wed meet at a spa somewhere.,-Sure. -You know, wed spa all morning.,-Wed spa all morning.,-Maybe write for an hour.,Wed go back and spa some more.,-Yes, have a facial, exactly.,-None of that –,-You probably got it done faster this way.,-I think we probably did. [ Laughs ],-So, this is about a new secretary of state who –,and theres also a character, whos a former president whos reckless.,-You could say that, yeah.,-I think there are other words.,-Hes from Palm Beach.,-Well, a lot of people live in Palm Beach.,-Yeah, a lot of people live in — Right, yeah.,But was he inspired by anyone? Was there anybody in real life?,-He is fictional, Seth.,-Yeah, yeah, yeah. -He is fictional.,However, having lived through, the prior four years… -Yeah.,-…it wasnt too hard to imagine.,-Yeah. -And the president is someone, who gets the country into a lot of trouble.,-Yeah. -Yeah.,And some of it of his own making, and some of it because he doesnt understand, how other bad actors are actually using him.,You know, so it wasnt too difficult for, you know,,Louise and I to think about this fictional former president.,-No. No, no, no.,But I remember the moment when I asked you,,like, what — what was your nightmare?,When you were secretary of state,,what kept you awake at night? -Yeah, yeah.,-And — -I had a list.,-She had a list. [ Laughter ],It was terrifying, so then she went through it,,and I said, “Well, choose one,”,and you chose the nuclear option.,-I mean, in the book, the plot really revolves, around the great fear that we always had, and still do,,that terrorists would somehow get ahold of nuclear weapons,,either a dirty bomb or something more sophisticated,,and its a plot that we hope, never, ever comes true in real life.,But it is something of a cautionary tale, about what could happen.,-When you were secretary of state,,I imagine briefings all the time,,and you would have a great burden, I would imagine, on you,to make sure you were up to speed on everything.,But it would also, I would imagine, be important,to find time to, like, shut your brain down a little bit.,-Right. -Did you in those times –,Were you reading fiction about worst-case scenarios,,or were you reading even lighter stuff?,-Lighter stuff, lighter stuff, but also classic mysteries,,like the ones that Louise writes.,You know, and “People” and “Us Weekly.”,I mean, I was trying to keep up,with what was actually going on in the world,,not just what was in my briefings.,-Whereas I was reading intelligence reports.,[ Laughter ],-I have a lot more questions for both of you.,We will be right back with more from Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Louise Penny.

Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny talk about new book, ‘State of Terror’ l GMA
our next guests are the 67th secretary,of state and a number one new york times,best-selling author but now they are, also the co-authors behind the new novel, state of terror an international, thriller ripped straight from the, headlines that will leave you on the, edge of your seat hillary clinton and, louise penny are here with us here in,studio thank you both for being with us,this morning oh thanks amy and secretary, clinton i dont think its too much of a,stretch for people to see the parallels, between this fiction novel and american, politics in the past several years are,we,in a state of terror how close are we if,not, thats a great question you know part of,what motivated louise and i to write, this book is,you know not only to um,give readers a thrill and and give them,a great opportunity to meet fascinating, characters that you know really came out,of louises brain that were inspired by,other people this was this was a,collaboration yeah but it but but it was,but you know it was also because i do,worry that we face a lot of really, serious uh problems that,um dont get the attention they deserve,so as you know from this book, its a lot of fun theres a lot of,entertainment but its also a really, serious problem of terrorists, potentially getting access to nuclear, weapons it kept me up,at night when i was secretary of state, its a cautionary tale it is a,cautionary tale and and louise um,its pretty remarkable i was reading up,on your partnership you were your, collaboration was really born from loss, correct it was i had lost my husband in,2016 just before the election hillary, wrote the most wonderful letter of,condolence,uh very detailed about my husband, michael and she had never met me she, hadnt met michael youd read the book, ive loved your books though louise i,felt like i knew you and you took time, out from the most brutal election, campaign to write to a canadian who, cant even vote it was an act of,kindness that ive rarely seen and, selflessness,um and then, the election didnt go the way we all, thought it should, well not all the loss of another side, the loss of the election,um and then we met finally in in,february of the next year and just, became friends because i had nothing to,offer you you had nothing to offer me,and so we were two women of a similar, age who bonded over grief yeah and also, brought together by,my best friend from sixth grade who, inspires one of the characters who, louise had gotten to know, and became a great great friend of hers,as well, and to,you know spend time together as we did, from 2017 until betsys death in 2019,you know its just such a gift uh to,both of us and that friendship, you know went much further than even the, closeness that i had with betsy that, louise then shared, and,we wanted this book to be a political, thriller we do want you to be on the, edge of your seat but we also wanted it,to be about relationships about love we,wanted it to have a lot of heart we,wanted it to feel, like you were getting to know people who, were in the cauldron of these,fast-moving dangerous threats but never, lost their humanity which sometimes is,you know kind of hard to keep and thats, the thing dont you find in thrillers, that that you dont see a lot of these, the women strong older women characters, you see it in real life the female, bonding but you dont see it necessarily,in thrillers and we wanted to write a,book, that we really wanted to read yes and we,wanted to write about characters that, that people would care about that we,cared about right so youre right it was,its more than just explosions although, god knows there are some,i love how you all are finishing each, others stuff you can see how well the, collaboration must have gone in writing, this and you you alluded to this but, many of the characters are from people,in your real life im curious secretary, clinton how much is ellen adams the, secretary of state in your novel hillary, clinton you know,i used my experience to inform the, character but as i write in the, acknowledgments i was really inspired by,another wonderful friend of mine ellen, tauscher a former member of congress who, became the undersecretary for arms, control dealt with the russians on,nuclear weapons was really in the middle,of trying to keep our world safer and,she sadly passed away in may of 2019,just two months before betsy lost her, battle with breast cancer so i thought a,lot about ellen who i was very close to,and admired and and just had the highest,uh respect for so its a combination of,characteristics,of people who i both know and they came, out of the imagination of,of louise so that we really had a,collaboration that brought my experience,uh with her expertise and great, experience and tried to come up with, characters as she said who youd want to,know who would want to spend time with, because part of what hooked me,on louises series of set in quebec, featuring an incredible character named, gamash is how much you wanted to know, these characters you wanted to find out, what was going to happen to them next, thats what we want people to feel like, reading this book too and i also want to,mention hillary that, because people come to the end of a book, and they often disclose it and say you, know thats it we want this book, obviously to live on to be memorable, because of of that but i really, encourage people to read the, acknowledgements because hillarys, acknowledgments are,the most beautiful acknowledgements ive, read some of the most beautiful writing, ive ever read and the way,you chose to end the book is,perfect you believe i believe you said, its up to us to make sure the plot, stays fictional after writing this any, interest at all in getting back into the, game of politics i will never be out of,the game of politics im not going to be,running for anything but i really feel, amy and i know, george was interviewing adam schiff, before,i really feel like our democracy is at,stake and theres many reasons for that, some of them we saw on,the screen with the insurrection some of,them because of the revelations about, facebook that creates a world of,disinformation instead of you know one, that we can agree on what the facts are,i really am worried about whats, happening at home and around the world,so im never going to get out of uh you, know being, involved worried and hopefully trying to,help in some way secretary clinton, louise penny thank you both for being, with us we really appreciate it want to,let everyone know state of terror it,hits bookshelves everywhere tomorrow so,pick up your copy, well hey State of Terror – Hillary Clinton & Louise Penny | Review (SPOILER-FREE!)
hey everyone its lexi so in todays, video ill be doing my spoiler-free,review of state of terror by hillary, clinton and louise penny so this was the, tales and teacups book club picks for,the months of july and august but you, still have basically until the end of,august if you want to participate you,can either do your review down below in,the comments here or in the announcement, video or if you just happen to have read,it and stumbled upon this video past, when were doing this you can still kind,of contribute to the discussion if youd, like, but i am very surprised i did not pick, this up sooner im a big louise penny, fan and also im very much admire, hillary clinton so im surprised i,havent picked this up sooner hence why,i made it the book club pick is that it,would force me to pick it up um and i,was not disappointed this is a little, bit different than what i tend to read, ive never really read a political, thriller so this is very much me,stepping outside my comfort zone but im,really happy, that i did so this follows ellen who has, just been um,just become i dont know the word, admitted, just become has just become secretary of,state and she previously was in charge,of this newspaper company that are this, journalistic company that was very, critical about the now president so she, thinks the president chose her to be,secretary of state in order to,essentially silence his one of his big, biggest critics so when there is this, kind of major terrorist attack that goes,on in europe, they slowly discover that there are also, bombs planted in america as well and it,kind of goes off from there, but that is kind of just a rough general, synopsis of this but overall i gave this,a 4 out of 5 stars i really enjoyed it,you could tell that, you got a lot of the kind of personal,first-hand experience from, hillary clintons perspective,of being secretary of state and in the, kind of afterward they mentioned that, there are like three scenarios that, always like kept her up at night and, they chose obviously to create a book, around one of the scenarios that, obviously,um,was like she was worried about um but i,really like this i feel like the one of,the main themes in here and they also, mentioned this in the afterward as well,is really focusing,on female friendships and kind of women, supporting women in these higher, political roles when its very much a,mens club which i really enjoyed in,particular we follow,um betsy who is ellens chief of staff,or something along the lines of that and, theyre theyve been best friends for a,long time and a lot of the fictional, characters in here have been modeled, around actual people, who are based off of people in hillary, clintons life whos passed away which i,thought was really really sweet um but, yeah this book was super suspenseful, there were times where i could feel like,my heart rate just kind of get really,go up its because it was like getting,so intense and its just like the, writing style in here you can tell like,it had kind of the uh louise pennies, like little twist she also has like, these ones where it kind of jumps, perspectives in the same kind of point,in time and it just made everything a,lot more fun it was just like it kept, you on the edge of your seat and its, like you can tell like certain, characters in here are loosely based off,of,real life people which i really enjoyed,um it was interesting in here how they, talked about how, like the kind of alt-right group, sees like you know women having rights, and you know people being able to marry, whoever they want to be as a threat and,its very interesting kind of looking, from this that was written last year and, kind of the events that have transpired, over the last month in terms of how, women are kind of losing their rights in,this country and its very hard to see, because i feel like although this is a,work of fiction you can tell that,a lot of,kind of what has been going on now with,alt-right movements january 6 all those, things is very much kind of inspired in,here and its like, this stuff actually is happening in the, united states even though this is a very, much kind of fictionalized story,uh which,is a little scary to think,um but yeah overall like i said i really, enjoyed it i thought the writing was, really like really well done you could, tell it was a very well thought out, political thriller as well which i,enjoyed like you could tell that they, had a clear sense there was a lot of red, herrings like it was a lot of i dont, know who i can trust, out like within this character group, which i enjoyed and you do get to jump, around from different perspectives and,it really kind of shows you what its, like to be secretary of state obviously, this is a very, intense like fictionalized example of it,but it is its a very important job and, obviously i think having hillary, clintons kind of perspective into this, made it,like you actually kind of get like an,insider scoop of what actually kind of,goes on and what the job actually, entails, and yeah like i said overall i really, enjoyed this i thought it was really, well written and there was kind of like,a little sneak peek not a sneak peek but,a little character crossover that i was,not expecting but i was like im 100,here for this which i was like i dont, know why i just consider these in two, separate, worlds but i was very much pleasantly, surprised by a certain character, crossover which i enjoyed and they like, mentioned this and then i was like oh my,gosh like this is happening so that made,me really excited um because i think the, newest inspector mosh book comes out in,november which im super excited for but,i really liked kind of the, character cameos that we got in here, which i enjoyed um but yeah i think this,is like usually like this is outside of,my kind of reading comfort zone but i,think if you want to try something new,if youre a fan of louise pennys work,or if youre just really admire hillary, clinton i think youll really enjoy this, like i said i had high expectations for,it and it met all of them like i really, enjoyed it it was just super fast paced, you hit the ground running and you kind,of get the paranoia not paranoia per se,but more so along the lines of,i dont know who to trust within like, this inner circle, and i think that like if you like if you,are thinking about this actively i think, thats when you know it was really well, done so like i said very much pleasantly, surprised by this not surprised but like, pleasantly pleased that it,met all my expectations thats it guys i,hope you enjoyed this video let me know,in the comments below what you felt, about this book and all that fun stuff,so,yeah thank you guys so much for watching, dont forget to give this video a thumbs,up and i will see you guys next time, bye guys

Reading Hillary Clintons State of Terror with my Aunt!!!
hey yall its me kevi im here with an,extra special guest today its my aunt, jan hi im cubbies and i was very happy, that kevi and i did this buddy read it,was a lot of fun we tend to read a lot,of the same kind of books although i,read everything i read any everything, from science fiction to,historical fiction to mysteries and, thrillers, the only thing i really dont read is,nonfiction yall heard me talk about her,a bunch of times on the channel shes, the one that introduced me to louise, penny and the universe between oh so,good so last month we decided to do a,buddy read together we read the state of,terror a new release co-authored by,louise penny an author we both like and, hillary rodham clinton an author she, likes,[Laughter],state of terror is a political thriller, about a series of terrorist attacks and,the secretary of state has to get to the, bottom of it since we both really enjoy, louise penny and politics this seems, like a perfect book for us to read, together all right so lets get right, into it so the main character in this, book was ellen yeah she was very much, hillary clinton yes there was no,question who ellen was, from the physical description to being, the secretary of state yes she was okay,[Laughter],she was like super secretary at stake, super secretary yes i found her to be a,little irritating she just always seemed,to be right in the middle of everything, and always seemed to be sneaking off to,take care of something and to find the, solution and it was like she was super, secretary of state she was doing too, much like too much it wasnt realistic, and then we had her best friend betsy, the fierce brilliant and loyal best, friend and she played candy crush and,i found out that only old people played, candy crush,i play candy crush every day so what, does that mean, does it mean im an old person,if you play candy crush sound off in the, comments below, but i also i really liked the story, behind this character of betsy yes yes,one of one of the things that kevin and,i did was as we were reading the book we,had some questions about how the book, developed right and we looked at some, interviews between louise penny and, hillary clinton and it turns out they, had a mutual friend whose name was betsy, and betsy was a childhood friend of,hillary clintons and so betsy in the, book kind of evolved from the friendship, that they shared the two of them met, through betsy when hillary was on the, campaign trail louise pennys husband, died and out of nowhere louise received,a note from hillary her condolences and,she was like wow like shes so busy, right now running for president and [ __ ],like she didnt have to do that and, louise penny said and im canadian i,cant even vote for her, right, yeah so then they became really good, friends and then betsy got sick and she, passed away so the two of them really, bonded over that and wanted to honor her,by making her a character in the book i,really liked the character of betsy, but i was worried with all the times, they said she is so loyal to ellen i was, like are they setting her up to not be,loyal oh and then there was former, president dunn eric dunn also known as,eric the dumb,oh my gosh he was, awful he was trump theres no question, about it at all he has a house in,mar-a-lago he had all of his family his, children were part of his cabinet or,whatever and he was an idiot he was very, stupid he did a [ __ ] ton of stupid,[ __ ] [ __ ] constantly made sure that,we were aware that this former president, who was very much trump was very, incompetent and bad at his job in case, you didnt know a bad guy, then there was beecham the director of,national intelligence that was a very, sketchy character he was and you were, really right on top of thinking that he,was a bad guy from the beginning, and i was kind of like okay well see, what happens, and we did yeah i did not trust that guy,he was a leftover from the trump, administration like while most of his, cronies had cleared out by this point, there were a couple who still had held,on and it was kind of questionable why,he was still there even right you know, why did the president keep him i think, another person who was left over was, general whitehead who was actually named, after louise pennys husband yes he was, except i thought he was a pimple,so,[Laughter],general pimple, and then we found out that when we,watched the interview that it was uh um,an honorary name,[Laughter],yeah but no he was another character who,was very involved with trying to figure, out all this terrorist crap going down, yeah and then there was anahita who was, what was her position she she was a,field field agent no field, something with a field she worked in the, fields um but she would have an office, yeah she would yeah, she worked at the state department and,she was not a high level person at the, state department yeah she got emails and, stuff that she had to feel she had to,sort through the emails yes and shes, kind of the inciting incident of,everything because she receives this, anonymous message that at first she, thinks is just spam or something but, turns out to be a warning its a warning, but she well well youll find out,[Laughter],and then there was ellens son gill he,was a prisoner of war and anahitas,ex-lover and a reporter and seemed to,somehow always be in the right and or,wrong place at the right and or wrong, time you know it was like he was oh,theres gill again, yep and then of course the big big big,big bad of the book was shaw the worst, terrorist to ever do a terror and he was, very good friends with eric the dome, yeah oh my gosh but there there were, just like who else do we talk about, there were just so many characters there, were there were a lot of like theres, chains guys yeah, who was he and a bunch of people who, died yeah tons of people died and like, all the different heads of political, people in other countries and the police, officers and the other countries and the,bad guys in all the different countries,we didnt know which of them could be,trusted and which were bad guys and oh,there were lots of people to keep track,of,but those were all the main people all, right lets get into like the plot stuff,so there was a whole lot of talk about, the previous administration the previous, administration was responsible for the, release of shah who had previously been,on house arrest for many many years, throughout the book its about the, previous administration was just, really bad and and we were kind of like, okay we get it,we get it the previous administration, was really bad and we agree yes but did,you know that the previous, administration was awful it was like, every chapter yes just constantly shove, down your throat that awful previous, administration oh my gosh like we get it,please just shut up about it when we,found out that trump released the number, one terrorist in the world like i,straight up just had to put the book, down and just walk away i was like come,on,like yeah hes stupid and incompetent, but like really like really,we get it you dont need to make him, that awful and stupid for us to get that, hes awful and stupid yes even though in,real life hes awful and stupid yes,the book also like started to get a,little confusing like in the middle yeah, yeah there was,one scene in the cave where i,read it and then i read it and then i,kept reading on because we had our quota, that we had to read every day and then i,was like okay wait i dont get what that, was so i went back and re-read it and, then when we talked about it,you didnt get it,yeah,oh that cave stuff got really, hard to follow yes although i did love, during the cave scene there was this, visual of one of the characters, describing getting shot and her blood, splatter covering the wall and joining, with the cave paintings yes that was a,really cool thing to picture and then we,had to get a shoehorned romance, shoved into the thing that was just so,pointless it was kind of like okay is,this like in the formula for in every, book you have to have this but it really, didnt fit yeah it was
