One year ago on February 8th,,I received permission to operate from the Los,Angeles Department of Water and Power and turned,on my homes fancy new Tesla solar glass roof.,A few weeks before that, I released a video,detailing our experience getting the roof,installed in that video.,I made the mistake of promising to publish a,follow up video to talk about power output and to,answer the most popular viewer questions.,Well, a lot happened in 2020,,but that video didnt.,Sorry about that.,However, now that the roof has been operational,for a full calendar year, Ive gathered a lot of,data and a lot of experience.,So Im even better equipped to answer those,questions and provide detailed data on power,output.,To begin with, lets start with that term I used,earlier permission to operate,,a lot of people were very concerned about that,phrase and wanted to know why I hadnt just,turned on the roof as soon as it was installed.,The answer is pretty boring.,My roof is contributing power to LAs grid,,and my utility company needed to verify that the,system was up to their specifications before it,could be turned on. That process didnt take all,that long and I ended up receiving PTO about,three weeks after installation was complete.,Is the roof going to catch on fire?,Well, the fire department signed off on it, so,I doubt it. Also, the solar tiles get plenty,of ventilation. A Tesla solar glass roof is,raised one and a half inches off the surface of,the waterproof underlayment below, allowing for,airflow under the solar tiles up to the ridge,vent at the apex of the roof, which also vents,our attic and cools our home.,Does the roof make noise?,No. Is it waterproof?,Yes, its real roof, the,tiles overlap to prevent leaks and the flashings,are seamless. On February 8th, our Tesla solar,glass roof produced a total of seven thousand,nine hundred ninety eight kilowatt hours of,energy in 2020.,Sixty seven point eight percent of that energy,went to LADWPs grid and thirty two,point two percent went directly to our home.,Seven thousand nine hundred ninety eight kilowatt,hours is 93 percent of the annual,8609 kilowatt hours of production,,which Tesla promised in our original purchase,agreement. But I mentioned earlier that,Californias severe fire season left my roof,covered in a thick layer of ash.,But I did not tell you was that I did not,actually end up getting the roof cleaned until,January 2nd of 2021.,And this chart, you can see that performance,definitely appeared to take a hit after the fires,began in August, considering the roof,was caked in ash for at least five months.,I consider seven percent underperformance,entirely acceptable.,And the good news doesnt stop there.,In the 12 month period from January 22nd,,2019 to January 19th, 2020.,My wife and I paid the Los Angeles Department of,Water and Power 2245 dollars,for electricity in the 12 month period from,January 22nd, 2020 to January,27th, 2021.,Our total electrical bill, including fees,,was one hundred and fifty six dollars and 62,cents.,That makes for a total annual savings of 2088,dollars.,There we go. add teslas latest solar roof tiles a,17 kilowatt system,eric began the process in august 2020,and working with tesla the solar tiles,were installed over a two-week period in,july 2021. so the solar company and the,roofers had to do it in coordination,tesla actually sent one main guy from,california to be the project manager,because he had installed them in,california and they flew him out here,and he was here for the two weeks and,they all kind of fit together like legos,which i thought was fascinating they put,down these rails at the beginning and,then each one of them is about a two,foot by four foot lego piece and they,just they just click right in and they,plug them up and then they put the next,one in they just and they literally just,push it in it sounds like legos they,click in,and they all go in series all the way,like this all the way around and then,the big question for this is how much,did,this cost,so we got it before the huge price hike,and it was like within weeks of the,price hike right after that they almost,doubled in cost because once i saw how,cool they look,i was like we should just put them,everywhere here like look at all this,roof space we have we just put more,solar tiles on there and then they,doubled and cost were like never mind,well wait its fine,the total project was,including four power walls was a hundred,thousand the 17 kilowatt solar tiles,cost around sixty thousand dollars while,the four power walls added another 40,grand after install the same project,today would cost eric over 150 thousand,dollars all this setup,was from the pavilion so here are the,wires coming in from the pavilion and,they come in and heres the two,pavilion inverters in its first year of,operation the tiles are generating about,2 600 Tesla Solar: 3 Years Later

gaps but there is another,huge part of the company that does not,get the attention that i think it,deserves uh and thats solar and,fundamentally,tesla is mostly an energy company and,for them to reach their very well-stated,goal of advancing sustainable energy,solar is a big player in sort of their,overall portfolio at the face of it,solar does not seem that interesting i,get it its not flashy it doesnt drive,you around on autopilot but if there was,one tesla product that i would buy again,in an instant,its tesla solar,[Music],[Music],alright so this video really got sparked,from well all of you watching uh ive,had tesla solar installed in my house,since 2017,uh and after posting this tweet which i,didnt think much about about my utility,bill uh the response was lets just say,strong um and the questions were,surprising uh so im here to answer all,of those questions and i think,ultimately the big one,is is it worth it im just gonna go and,spoil it right now yes for me it was a,hundred percent worth it all right so,first let me lay out exactly how tesla,solar works and what options you have uh,and ill say upfront,this is almost all dependent,on where you live so for me i live in,southern california my electric company,is southern california edison so my,experience is based on those,circumstances you might live where it,snows where electricity has different,prices but for me in southern california,it made a lot of sense so right now,tesla offers generally two solar options,for residential stuff you can get solar,panels on your roof which is vastly,easier and more popular they also offer,a solar roof i actually did an entire,video,on a solar roof which i dont have but i,went to actually the very first house,where solar roof got installed ill link,to that video down below if you want to,watch it but obviously you can probably,guess what it does it involves replacing,your entire roof with these solar cells,its very cool technology but for most,people it is not the best option uh and,for me when i was looking to install,solar had recently just moved into a new,house solar roof wasnt available yet um,and beyond that i didnt have that much,money left,after moving in i certainly didnt need,a brand new roof so i opted for,a little over 11.3 kilowatt array on my,roof and i added two tesla powerwall,battery packs each has about 13.5,kilowatt so heres why i,went with solar at first back in 2017,they were insane tax incentives to,install solar essentially it was the,more you spent the bigger the tax credit,that you got and also again you may vary,where you live but here in southern,california,i have three kids it gets very hot we,tend to run our air conditioning at,night to keep everybody nice and cool i,also drive evs so those were being,charged in the summer months and you can,see this bill from september 2017 the,electric bill was going as high as 540,and that was the highest it ever got um,but usually in the summer it settled,around 400 and then in regular months it,kind of came around between 250 and 300,so it was very expensive and i wasnt,limiting my electric use i probably,could have done a lot to change my,lifestyle and limit that um but solar,seemed like a really good option to,solve a lot of those problems so a lot,of things i can do with this system with,it installed i can now,power my entire house uh in fact theres,a option now inside a tesla app where i,can take my whole house off the grid if,i want to which is awesome uh i can,charge up my eevee i can store energy in,the battery packs excess stuff and i,could also use the solar energy that im,generating to sell it back to the grid,thats actually what led to that,negative power build end of the month,and i should say that negative 199 was,not typical at all i was on vacation for,a week there so i wasnt using anything,to house and it was all going back to,the grid this is more representative of,my electric bill is now sometimes,between like 12 and like 25 to 30 bucks,is generally all my bill ends up being,so that sounds great but the biggest,question the most overwhelming question,uh that ive seen is how much did all of,this cost and was it worth it for that,price so when i installed my system it,came out to just under 50 000 for,everything,now i just moved into new house i did,not have fifty thousand dollars laying,around so i opted to finance the system,at a low interest rate with no,prepayment penalty that equals a payment,of around 250 dollars a month for the,system so that meant that what i was,paying for the solar array even on the,least expensive month was generally less,than what i was paying for my,electricity then beyond all that i got a,really big tax credit i believe it was,around 15 to twenty thousand dollars,back so i wasnt spending any more money,but i was saving money on the hot months,at the very least i was breaking even on,the winter months,and im not renting this system at all,like some solar companies do i own the,panels and eventually when i pay off the,rest of that loan,i will own them outright and be able to,produce energy for no really no monthly,payment at all and again in 2017 these,were installed,the tax incentives were were nuts and,there still are tax incentives as well,but its gonna depend on state and where,you live uh but it made it really,worthwhile so if you take that 15 to 20,thousand dollars,i saved that money the whole system cost,me you know around 30 or so if you if,you back that out,but until i pay that off um im still,saving money so i want to tell you guys,about one of the latest from lenovo its,lenovo ideapad duet 3i and sort of,hybrid computer laptop tablet things,arent new but lenovos taking that idea,and just kind of streamlined the whole,thing so on its surface you are getting,a three in one you are getting a really,good tablet you are getting a really,good laptop and youre getting a device,with full lte connection that can also,enable you to make phone calls so its,kind of a phone but also data on the go,so a lot of things to really like about,the computer first,build quality is absolutely outstanding,but a computer like this or tablet like,this however you want to phrase it in my,mind its only as good as the hinge if,it has a weak hinge or a hinge that,cant be adjusted its not usable its,not usable on your lap its barely,usable on a table,the hinge here is awesome and obviously,being a windows computer its a,multitasking beast still snap mode on,windows is probably my favorite thing,going so obviously you can run however,many apps youre going to want side by,side you can run a ton of edge tabs,under chrome tabs and youll be fully,set to go also theres an eye on privacy,here as well so while the webcam on the,front is awesome to have you do have a,little shutter you can close to give you,a bit more privacy and peace of mind if,thats something that you want so if you,want to learn more or youre interested,in the lenovo ideapad duet 3i weve thousand,dollars to the value of my home so when,i sold my home i would have made all,that money back anyway okay so that,leads to the other big question that i,got was like how do i use these Is The Tesla V3 Solar Roof Worth The Money?

last year when I looked at the Tesla,solar roof I determined that it was,still not worth it in terms of a,financial investment compared to just,adding solar panels to my existing roof,or getting a new roof and then adding,panels to it but since then,Tesla released version 3 and has dropped,the price by thousands of dollars so I,thought we could just have another look,and see whether or not it makes,financial sense to buy and install a,brand new Tesla solar roof lets free,the data if youve been following the,channel for a while youll know that,this is my third has a solar roof video,with the first one uploaded all the way,back in 2016 back then Elon made some,big claims saying it would look better,than a normal roof and generate,electricity last longer and more but,then we waited and nothing seemed to,happen,that was until March of 2019 when Elon,told us 20:19 would be the year of the,solar roof but alas the model 3,production ended up taking almost all of,Teslas focus and everything just seemed,to stop so we waited some more and now,here we are in 2020 and Im wondering,whether or not it makes sense now,especially given how low interest rates,in the current pandemic when I looked,back at this in 2019 the calculator on,the tousle website estimated that a,solar roof would cost about $75,000 for,a 2,000 square foot house using the,calculator at the time what I found was,that it was actually a 33% premium for,the solar glass versus just a new roof,and solar panel so really it didnt make,a lot of sense and certainly for me that,was way too much even if I didnt have,solar already and in the end I,determined that for most people,especially people who didnt need a new,roof it really didnt make sense,compared to just installing solar panels,on your current roof unless you wanted,the cool factor and happen to have the,money to spend but then in October of,2019 Elon said that the v3 solar glass,roof price point is less than the,average of a new roof plus solar panels,he went on to say that he thinks that,this will be the case about 80% of the,time now thats big especially when we,compare it to the previous cost that we,already reported on so checking the,tesla website,now it looks like that same v3 solar,glass roof would be $43,000 cheaper than,it was in 2019 now at that price youre,looking at two dollars and eleven cents,per watt for the solar roof and then two,dollars and six cents for the regular,solar panels and overall this comes out,to be about a ten thousand five hundred,dollar difference so we also have to,think about how theyll hold up are they,strong well theyre made with tempered,glass and as my friend Zach from Jerry,rig everything channel likes to say,glasses glass and glass breaks but these,tiles are actually three times stronger,than standard roofing tiles and are,engineered for this all-weather,durability according to Tesla the specs,specifically note that the tiles are,rated for one hundred and thirty mile,per hour winds which covers a category,three hurricane they also come with a,class three hail rating which is about a,1.75 inch diameter hail size which is,kind of close to a golf ball a pretty,extreme condition but it does happen,from time to time so if theyre strong,even though theyre glass and we know,glass breaks will they last,[Music],the solar room comes with the 25 year,warranty which is pretty good it,includes the tiles in the kind of roof,aspect as well as the power generation,so the solar PV system that you,typically have and comparing that to a,regular roof which can last anywhere,between 15 to 50 years its kind of,smack-dab in the middle the big,variability there is the materials and,workmanship as well as any other kind of,weather events that may occur or things,like a tree falling down on top of the,house it is interesting to see kind of,some of the demos and the examples out,there but overall it looks like this is,going to be a durable product at least,on paper and another big improvement,here probably that helps with that cost,reduction is the install time there are,some stories out there previous,installation taking weeks if not over a,full month just to get your solar roof,installed but now it seems to be more,streamlined and this is likely due to,eliminating the various types of design,options and only offering a single,design according to Tesla the install,time is dependent on the size and,complexity of your roof but most,installations take approximately one,week to complete and earlier this year,we actually started to see some of these,in the wild you may remember that I,helped my friend John Rhett injure who,reviewed one of the very first installs,by comparing a regular roof and the,solar industry averages per watt to what,the guy that actually got it installed,paid for his Tesla solar roof in that,video we looked at a 9.2 kilowatt solar,glass roof which cost $65,000 but did,include a power wall so minus that and,youre right at fifty six thousand,dollars for the solar roof alone this,left us with a cost of six dollars and,twelve cents per watt versus the average,cost of three dollars and forty four,cents per watt and another install the,Tesla recently did in Florida on a 3,400,square foot roof with an 18 kilowatt,solar power system came in at a $7 per,square foot and $2 65 cents per watt,this is before incentives according to,electric so the economics on it can vary,greatly and again youre looking at the,higher end roofing materials here and,obviously if you were just to get a,regular solar install and not do,anything else to your roof yes that,would clearly be cheaper but what were,getting here is much more so that,comparison,is kind of unfair really and when I did,look at those numbers what I found was,that a new asphalt roof plus solar,panels of the same size at 9.2 kilowatt,system that were comparing to in,Southern California comes to just under,forty three thousand dollars based on,the average industry costs this is,fourteen thousand dollars cheaper than,otezla Solar roof,however again youre getting an asphalt,roof not one of these higher-end roofing,materials so when you compare it to,something like metal tile or slate the,Tesla solar roof wins out by around,thirteen thousand dollars all the way up,to seventy seven thousand dollars for,the higher-end slate roof with the,panels this means that the Tesla solar,roof is cheaper than all other high-end,roofing options from a range of thirteen,thousand to seventy seven thousand,dollars so if youre in that market this,is definitely something to consider and,another thing to keep in mind is it,actually isnt a bad time right now,given the federal tax credit is still in,place and interest rates are so,incredibly low and if youre unfamiliar,with that or maybe you have forgotten,the current federal investment tax,credit the ITC as its called is twenty,six percent meaning whatever you pay for,your solar panel system solar glass roof,whatever option you go youll get a,twenty six percent credit on your taxes,for the following year,now that already has begun its phase-out,and its gonna kind of gradually phase,out over the next several years but,hopefully by then well renew that and,itll kind of come back to life because,solar energy does employ a ton of people,around the world and it helps the grid,theres just so much positive economic,reasons to renew this incentive so well,see but as of right now its still in,place and its still helping you kind of,make this more economical and something,we didnt talk a Tesla Solar Roof | 1-Year Review

the tesla solar roof,maybe youve heard of it,maybe youve heard it described as,unobtainium,or vaporware,but,alas,im up here today,on this very slippery roof,to give,my one-year review,to give my one-year review,so at the beginning of the pandemic our,insurance company told us that we needed,to replace our leaky old asphalt roof,and they were willing to give us,about twelve thousand dollars towards,that end,so,we went on teslas website typed in the,address,put in how much we spent per month on,electricity,and their computer system took satellite,images and shot us out a quote an,estimate,at first they had 11 kilowatts of solar,on our east-west facing roof,with three powerwall twos in our garage,totaling 40 kilowatt hours worth of,battery storage,now,the price at the time seemed absurdly,low with the 26 federal tax credit and,the local incentives plus what we were,getting from insurance,it came out to under 30 000.,but over the course of the next year,that we waited before we had permission,to install,that price would change in fact we were,caught up in,that group of powerwall customers and,solar customers that had their quotes,raised,and we did decide to go along with that,but um,all of that worked out in the end and,well get into it here in a minute,i will say that the reason it seemed,like there was such complications and,troubles and why we had to wait so long,was less on tesla and more on our,utility company and our building,department,which had all but shut down during the,pandemic and stopped really issuing new,building permits,while at the same time our utility,didnt want to give us permission to,attach so much solar to the grid that we,had requested and we actually had to,spend a whole year running up our,electric usage,so that we could install enough solar,which really should have more to do with,square footage when theres a product,like this,but some of those rules will just have,to change over time and unfortunately i,think thats a big reason why youre,seeing people online maybe saying they,cant get tesla solar or that they had,their order canceled,it just comes down to the jurisdictions,youre in and whether or not those,cities or regions,are a viable place for tesla to do,business,we were fortunate enough that they were,although it took a lot of me calling,them on the phone,and um pestering people to get it to,move along,but ultimately it worked out ill be it,at a different price,so after waiting for an entire year we,finally had our install scheduled,and i have to say,the biggest con of the entire tesla,solar roof system and process,is,the amount of attention you will get,from,passerbys,as soon as they filled our entire,driveway up with materials big crates,with tesla logos,we started having people,turn their necks and heads and look a,little bit harder at what was going on,we started getting people stopping and,waiting for us to go go out and check,the mail or bring in our groceries we,would get people pulling over and taking,pictures of the house etc and that,hasnt stopped for the last year thats,something to be aware of i dont,particularly love it i just have to no,i tell myself theyre just taking,pictures of the roof because they might,want one or something and i,try not to put too much into the,paranoia but,its it should be said now,tesla came in full force with a crew of,15 guys,they were very diligent hard working,they really prioritized safety,and would take breaks for things like,bee stings or,if there was a drop of rain they would,all get off of the roof because,apparently its slippery when wet,and,as soon as they pulled off the old roof,they found some damage some water damage,on the decking the quote went up a,little bit they fixed it pretty promptly,a very painless procedure though,generally you were just hanging out,inside the house,well it sounded like you had an army of,squirrels up top just working away um,but,it was cool to see and they were all,very nice guys willing to talk to you,about it so as to the process they put,down this underlayment that was a,adhesive on the bottom and a neoprene,kind of shark skin on the top,thats waterproof that acts as a roof in,and of itself right,but then they took,some clips,about this long these plastic clips,and screwed them through that,underlayment into the joists,and then they would clip in,varying lengths of these ceramic tiles,some of which have solar maybe even most,of which but a lot of them do not and,because of that they left me with some,sample pieces,of different lengths and you can see,that they have a metal bracket on the,bottom and they just clip them into here,and they stagger them in a way that the,water runs off,and,onto the one below and in between the,seams there are these clips which also,have a channel for water it is a pretty,cool design that has added benefits for,example,it hovers,about that much off of the roof plane,itself,so you get this air gap that maybe acts,as a kind of insulation,but i think that it does have benefits,not actually getting the roof itself,rained on very much,although having had some storms and,stuff we wouldnt be concerned about it,the other thing to note is that the,power wall crew was a different set of,guys that did have some overlap,but they werent there working on the,power walls the whole time i had cleared,out the garage for example so that they,could but it turns out they didnt come,until the second week or so,and,they were the ones who showed you how to,use the app,and at the end of everything they were,the ones who left you waiting for pto or,permission to operate,okay,now before we get into pto we need to,jump into some charts and give some,context by looking back,before we can look a little bit less,back,and i have to say,i got obsessed with the tesla app that,is a thing that brings many charts into,your life,we got permission to operate in the late,summer,and immediately i started,experimenting with every appliance in,the house turning things off and on to,see how much energy they used versus how,much we generated,and as much as i was splitting hairs,looking at cost savings mode versus,self-powered mode,and changing our time of use settings in,the app etc,theres only so much,you can control,and it turns out that is all about,consumption rather than generation,you dont control how much the sun,shines on your house,now lets hop into the charts shall we,so,here we have three years of energy,consumption,we have one year of gas heated house,which used about 30 000 kilowatt hours,of energy,we have a red line representing that gas,usage,a green line doing the electricity,and a fuchsia line representing our net,energy or the combination thereof,then we switched to electric heat pumps,and that saved a lot of net energy,by reducing our gas,and increasing our electric,then,after using about 24 000 kilowatts that,year,we got permission to operate on the,solar,and we immediately went net negative,energy even including gas,but,what i learned,and what made me stop checking the app,is frequently through the winter,was that,the sun,is what heats the earth winter theres,less sun theres less solar but you need,more energy to heat the home,so,we went from producing about a thousand,kilowatt hours,down to producing around 400 kilowatt,hours in the winter,still drastically reducing our total,consumption,but,less motivation to check the app,now,the sun came out days got longer and as,you can see we went,up to about 1400,kilowatt hours being produced in the,plateau of,summer and we went negative for,still are,you know those several months in fact i,think we could go off grid from about,halfway through march to,just about october,and thats saying something,um the other,thing is that this is about 5 200,kilowatt hours of energy net for this,year,but,more than half of that about 60 percent,of it is the gas from just our tankless,hot water heater,if you were to exclude the gas,we have used about 14,thousand,kilowatt hours,while producing about 12 000
