Introduction

Good morning! I hope everyone's day is starting off well. Today, I wanted to give you a glimpse into my daily routine on the homestead. The weather has been quite unpredictable lately, but it hasn't stopped me from working and checking on the various animals and projects around here.

Checking on the Piglets

One of the first things I do in the morning is check on our adorable piglets. They have been growing rapidly since we brought them home. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, they have been doing well and are almost double in size since we first got them. They spend most of their time napping and eating lots of food. It won't be long before they are big enough to be let out to forage and help with land management.

The Unpredictable Weather

The weather has been an ongoing challenge for us. It seems like every day brings a new surprise. We've had rain, wind, and even some sunny moments in between. It can be frustrating at times, especially when we're trying to work on outdoor projects like the siding on our house. But we've learned to adapt and play it by ear, taking advantage of any weather windows we get.

Installing Trim Board and Clapboard

One of the ongoing projects on our homestead is the installation of trim board and clapboard on our house. We recently reached the point where we are working above the roof line, which is an exciting milestone. The progress is slow but steady, and the house is starting to take shape. I can't wait to see the final result, with no more green showing on the front of the house.

The Growth of the Piglets

Back to the piglets – they continue to grow at an impressive rate. It's amazing to see how much they've grown in just a week. They are eating well and napping often, as growing piglets do. Soon, when they reach around 100 pounds, we'll be able to release them into the forest area for them to forage and help us with the land. It will be a significant milestone on our homestead journey.

Plans for Pasturing the Pigs

Once the piglets are big enough, we have plans to move them to a pasture area. This will provide them with a larger space to roam and access to a variety of vegetation. We believe in sustainable and ethical farming practices, and pasturing our pigs is an important part of that. It will also allow them to contribute to the land management on our property.

Observing Wildlife on the Property

Living on a homestead brings us closer to nature, and we often have the privilege of observing wildlife firsthand. Recently, we spotted a bear cub running across the road near our property. It was an exciting and rare sighting for us. We know that bears are now out of hibernation, and we'll need to remain vigilant as we continue our daily routines on the homestead.

Working on the Siding

Back to the siding – this project has taken longer than anticipated due to its complexity and the various weather challenges we've faced. However, we've made significant progress and are now working on the final sections above the roofline. The combination of black and redwood red siding, along with the stone accents, creates an eye-catching and beautiful visual. Despite the challenges, I am proud of the work we're doing and the outcome we're achieving.

Dealing with Rainy Weather

As I mentioned earlier, the weather can be quite unpredictable. On some days, we experience heavy rain, which can hinder our progress on outdoor projects. We've had to take breaks and wait for the rain to subside before continuing our work. It can be frustrating at times, but we've learned to adapt and make the most of the dry moments.

Issues with the Generator

Lastly, I wanted to share a recent issue we encountered with our Cummins 20-watt generator. It suddenly stopped running and showed a generator fault code related to the governor overload. We had to call in a service technician who discovered a bent push rod, which he replaced. It was puzzling to us how this could happen to a practically new generator with only 155 hours of use. We would appreciate any insights or ideas on what could have caused this issue and how to prevent it in the future.
