Introduction

Welcome back to the shop! In this article, I will be sharing with you an exciting project that I have in my workshop. As many of you know, I have a deep fascination with old welders, and this time I have a welder generator made by the Lincoln Company. Although it has some issues and hasn't been used in years, I believe it has great potential for restoration.

Description of the Welder Generator

Let's start by taking a closer look at this welder generator. As I mentioned earlier, it is a Lincoln welder generator that has seen better days. The exterior is filthy with various dents and dings, and the gas tank is filled with varnish and residue. However, despite its worn appearance, it seems to be complete with all the necessary components.

Issues with the Welder Generator

Before beginning the restoration project, it's essential to address the issues with the welder generator. The primary problem lies within the gas tank, which has accumulated a significant amount of varnish and grime over time. This will require thorough cleaning to ensure proper functioning.

Preparing for the Restoration Project

Now it's time to decide how to approach the restoration project. There are two options - either to restore it to its original glory with a fresh coat of paint or to maintain its rustic patina. This decision will be made in due time, but for now, our focus is on cleaning the welder generator and bringing it back to working condition.

Cleaning the Welder Generator

To start the cleaning process, I will take you back to the welder generator and give you a closer look at its current condition. Despite the grime and filth, it is remarkable how well-preserved certain parts are. I have already removed the drain and will now proceed to power wash the exterior to make the cleaning process faster and more efficient.

Removing the Running Gear

Before we can proceed with further repairs and cleaning, it is necessary to separate the welder generator from its running gear. Upon closer inspection, I have identified two bolts holding the two parts together. Additionally, I have noticed some rubber mounts that may have become damaged over time, causing instability. I will address these issues while keeping in mind the importance of a straight axle to rectify the wheel splay issue.

Repairing the Wheel Splay Issue

The wheel splay issue is a significant concern that needs to be addressed. The current wheels splay out under the weight of the welder generator, affecting its stability and functionality. To resolve this problem, I am considering welding a straight axle across the wheels, providing a more secure and balanced structure.

Removing Body Panels and Tank Cleaning

To continue with the restoration, it is necessary to remove the body panels and access the gas tank. I anticipate that the tank cleaning process will be challenging, as it contains a thick layer of varnish. However, with the right tools and cleaning agents, I am confident in achieving optimal results.

Cleaning the Carburetor

As part of the restoration process, the carburetor requires thorough cleaning. This vital component is responsible for the optimal functioning of the welder generator. By removing any dirt, debris, and buildup, we can ensure smooth operation and performance.

Inspecting the Coil Magneto

Now, let's take a closer look at the coil magneto. Upon inspection, there seems to be a significant amount of crud and grime accumulated over time. This can affect its efficiency and overall performance. Therefore, it is crucial to clean and inspect the coil magneto before proceeding with the restoration project.

Concerns with the Magneto Coil

During the inspection process, I have come across some concerns with the magneto coil. Specifically, the wires on the new coil are positioned differently than the original one. This inconsistency raises concerns about potential wire contact with the rotating flywheel. I will explore solutions to this issue to ensure the safety and longevity of the welder generator.

Soldering the Wires

To address the wiring issue with the magneto coil, soldering the wires may be the most appropriate solution. By lengthening one wire and rerouting it to the correct position, I can ensure a secure connection and minimize the risk of wire contact with the rotating flywheel. This step will contribute to the overall reliability and performance of the welder generator.

As you can see, this restoration project involves various stages, from cleaning and repairs to addressing specific issues. With careful attention to detail and a systematic approach, I am confident in restoring this welder generator to its former glory.
