The Voices in the Adjoining Room

In a small, dimly lit room, the muffled sounds of female voices can be heard. Peering through the doorway, I catch a glimpse of the scene unfolding inside. To my right stands Maryam, an older woman dressed in a modest brown job. She seems to be visiting her mother, engaged in a conversation marked by low voices and foreign accents.

Among the women is a peculiar character - a professor who has joined the clan of gypsies. Rumor has it that he lost his wife to Ben, one of his students. Some reviewers have dubbed this affair as a tale of redemption, a good will amidst the turbulence of life.

Curiosity creeps in. What do all these words mean, and why was I suddenly thrust into this midst of a bad fight? Perhaps it is an opportunity to write about Afghanistan once again, I contemplate, as those words echo in my mind. To tell the rest of the world what fathers are doing to our country. But I quickly dismiss the thought, as I am not that kind of writer.

But the gypsy professor persists. "You should go back to Afghanistan, my dear brother," he proclaims contemptuously, questioning the writer within me. His condescending tone implies that he knows what is best. But who is he to judge?

The conversation shifts. Another woman enters the room, delicately balancing a pair of cups and a teapot. Silence descends as she sets the steaming cup of tea before me. Without making eye contact, she quietly pours tea for everyone. Her movements are graceful, yet there is a weariness in her eyes. She disappears as silently as she entered, her bare feet betraying not even a whisper.

I take a seat and bring the cup to my lips, savoring the strong black tea. The gypsy professor finally breaks the uneasy silence that fell upon us. "So, what brings you back to Afghanistan, my brother?" he inquires, his voice filled with a mix of curiosity and contempt.

I respond, my voice tinged with a hint of melancholy, "I'm not here to sell property or collect money. I'm here to find a boy, a boy named Hassan." As I speak his name, I reach into the pocket of my shirt and retrieve a worn photograph. Hassan's face stares back at me, reminding me of the journey that lies ahead.

The gypsy professor blinks, seemingly taken aback. He was expecting a different answer, perhaps something that would align with his own desires and ambitions. But instead, he simply nods and acknowledges my words. "Follow me, my brother, to Watson. He's the man you seek. Though he's no longer among the living, his secrets still linger."

We leave the room, setting foot in the bustling streets of Afghanistan. The gypsy professor with his herringbone coat and black turban leads the way, his eyes reflecting a hidden knowledge that I cannot yet decipher. As we walk, he turns to me and says, "A thousand times over, my brother. A thousand times over."
