The Journey to 100,000 Subscribers

I started posting weekly on YouTube in January 2017, with the goal of improving my online video skills. Initially, I struggled with talking to the camera and being comfortable in front of the microphone. Despite my experience in classroom-style training, I found the transition to online video challenging. However, I was determined to practice and get better. One of the main methods I used was conditional formatting, which I found to be a valuable feature. It allowed me to enhance the value of my videos quickly. The early stages were not easy, but I persisted because I wanted to deliver excellent courses.

Over time, my focus shifted from self-improvement to building a community. I realized that my subscribers' comments and feedback were a significant source of inspiration. Initially, I managed to respond to every single comment, but as my channel grew, it became more challenging. Nonetheless, I continue to read and appreciate all the comments I receive.

The Importance of Practice and Community

To achieve mastery in any skill, including video creation, practice is crucial. I believe in the concept of deliberate practice, where repetition and continuous improvement are key. Making online courses alone wasn't enough practice for me; I wanted to sharpen my skills elsewhere. That's when the concept of starting a YouTube channel came to my mind. It served as a platform for me to practice creating content, engaging with an audience, and further honing my video skills.

However, YouTube has become more than just a platform for practice. It has become a community where learners gather to exchange knowledge, learn from each other, and inspire further growth. The comments and feedback I receive from my subscribers are a constant source of motivation and inspiration. It brings me joy to see how my content has helped others in their learning journey. Building this community has been an invaluable part of my YouTube experience.

Getting to Know Each Other

I wanted to take this opportunity to know my subscribers a little better. I encouraged them to share a bit about themselves in the comments section. Many subscribers have shared their current professions, goals, and plans, fostering a sense of connection and engagement. In the same spirit, I shared some details about myself, taking my subscribers on a quick tour of my life. Living in Vienna, I explained how the city's rich history, artsy vibe, and excellent infrastructure contribute to its appeal. I also touched upon my time in Canada, where I studied economics and began my journey with Excel.

My Life in Vienna

Vienna, the capital city of Austria, has been my home for the past 18 years. With its beautiful location by the Danube River and a vibrant arts scene, Vienna offers a high quality of living. The city's infrastructure, including its reliable and punctual public transport system, adds to its appeal. Vienna is known for its green spaces and even has vineyards within the city limits. The city is always buzzing with activities, such as Christmas markets, festivals, and concerts, creating a lively atmosphere.

From Canada to Teaching Excel

Prior to settling in Vienna, I spent five years in Canada, where I pursued my education in economics. I studied at Carleton University in Ottawa and later pursued a master's degree at the University of Toronto. After completing my studies, I worked as an economist at the Center for the Study of Living Standards in Ottawa. However, I soon realized that the research-focused work and extreme weather conditions were not for me. It was during this time that I discovered Excel and VBA, and I fell in love with their capabilities. They became my main tools throughout my corporate career.

Pursuing my Passion

In 2015, I decided to follow my passion for teaching and started conducting offline courses. This led me to create my YouTube channel and online courses, which have been more fulfilling than any previous job I've had. Teaching has become a seamless part of my life; it doesn't feel like work at all. I lose track of time while creating content and engaging with learners. It's incredibly gratifying to know that my courses and videos have made a positive impact on others' learning journey.

What I Do When I'm Not Working

When I'm not working, I prioritize spending time with family and friends. I also make sure to incorporate some physical activity into my routine. One guilty pleasure I indulge in is enjoying a delicious bowl of chips with yogurt, seasoned with a pinch of salt and pepper. It's a treat I inherited from my father. Additionally, I enjoy watching series during my downtime, and I challenge my subscribers to guess which series is among my favorites.

Future Plans and Courses

As for my plans for the future, I am currently working on content for new courses. I am particularly excited about the upcoming dynamic arrays course, which will cover the new functions introduced in Office 365. Additionally, I am developing an Excel basics course to cater to beginners' needs. Furthermore, I am looking forward to creating a course on visualization and storytelling with data, a topic that many of my subscribers have requested. I will continue producing video tutorials for my YouTube channel based on the suggestions of my viewers. While Excel will always be a cornerstone of my content, I also aim to expand my offerings beyond spreadsheets and delve into business-related topics.

Collaboration on Business-related Topics

In collaboration with another expert in finance and accounting, I am working on a course that will focus on various business-related topics such as accounting, investments, and financial analysis. Drawing on my technical knowledge and their expertise in finance and accounting, we aim to create a valuable and comprehensive course that combines both aspects. Although it is still a work in progress, I am extremely excited about the potential it holds. I believe this collaboration will provide learners with a holistic understanding of these subjects.

Conclusion

The journey to 100,000 subscribers on YouTube has been remarkable and fulfilling. From humble beginnings as a way to practice and improve my video skills, it has grown into a thriving community of learners. The support, comments, and feedback from my subscribers have been invaluable in shaping my content and motivating me to continue creating. As I look towards the future, I am excited about the new courses and collaborations that lie ahead. I also extend my gratitude to my subscribers for their unwavering support and encouragement.
