Installing a Koller Home Generator: A Step-by-Step Guide

When the unexpected happens, Koller home generators provide power and peace of mind. This article will guide you through the key steps involved in installing an air-cooled Koller home generator. The generator can operate on the same fuel source, LP or natural gas, that currently runs your appliances.

1. Key Components of a Koller Home Generator

The Generator Itself

The first step in installing a Koller home generator is understanding its key components. The generator itself is the heart of the system, providing the primary power source during an outage.

Choosing the Location

Selecting the appropriate location for your generator is crucial. It should be placed outdoors, ensuring minimum clearances as specified in the installation manual. Take care to position the generator where hot exhaust gases do not blow on plants or other combustible materials.

2. Power Connections and Fuel Source

Making Power Connections

Once you have chosen the location, it's time to make power connections. Koller generators come with a field connection terminal block, streamlining the wiring process. Route the AC leads through flexible conduit and connect the emergency source to the terminal block.

Connecting to the Fuel Source

Your Koller generator can operate on either natural gas or LP vapor fuel. While it is shipped set for natural gas, you can easily convert it to LP vapor. Install the orifice and disconnect the spark advance leads, as described in the installation manual. Ensure the output pressure from the gas utility or LP tank is adequate and check the utility gas meter flow rate.

3. Pre-Start Checks

Before starting up the generator, perform some pre-start checks. Inspect the air cleaner, air inlets, battery connections, and exhaust system for leaks or blockages. Maintain the oil level at or near the full mark on the dipstick. Once everything is in order, start the system by pressing the Run button on the control panel.

4. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)

The automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a crucial component of your generator system. It transfers electrical load from the normal source, such as the utility, to the emergency source, which is your Koller generator. The ATS can be wired to supply all of your home's electrical load or just essential systems. Choose the appropriate ATS based on your requirements.
